Episode 260

LISTENER SHOUTOUTS & QUESTIONS:

This week we have a listener check in from Braulio and a of listener question from Giovanni:

  • Braulio: I just wanted to let you know over the past few months I’ve listen to side hustle school daily (as well as binge listen to the episodes prior to my discovery of it) and have really been thinking of what to do for my own side hustle. Today I took the plunge. I decided to start my own service to review resumes for students trying to find internships and entry-level jobs from college. I started my own website on Wix and am excited to see what turns out. Currently, I’m finishing my last year of my degree and saw this as a problem with many of my friends and classmates. I’m not sure how successful this will be yet but hope that I can find make some profit to help with extra expenses as a student and as well help some students along the way reach their goals!
  • Giovanni: Gio recently graduated and has landed a job in Silicon Valley, but he’s already beginning to think of ways that he can create a side hustle. He’s always thought about starting a side hustle, but he’s never really known how to get started. Recently though, he’s gotten an idea to start his own podcast specifically for college students in their junior and senior years. When he was in school he didn’t really know what certain jobs entailed or what it took to get them, so he’s looking to feature and interview people who have landed various jobs and discuss these topics so that students looking to specialize know which direction they’d like to take. What he’s uncertain about is how to get started

If you have something you’d like to ask me or an update you’d like to share, I’d love to hear from you! Leave me a voice message on the website or call into the Side Hustle Hotline (Dial 844-9-HUSTLE // 844-948-7853), and your question may be featured on the show!

WEEKLY RECAP: Deadlines Are Your Friends

Notes from Chris

Episode 253

LISTENER SHOUTOUTS & QUESTIONS:

This week we had a couple of check ins from La Dawn and Karen, and a couple of listener questions from Dan and Chris:

  • La Dawn: I just binged listened to every episode. It took about a week but I’m excited to pursue my side hustle in Austin, TX in the coming week. I will continue to listen and thank you for the amazing show.
  • Karen: Through a combination of hearing about Sven Delivers (Ep. 145 a few episodes back) and my life experience which included a year in Boston where I realized that used IKEA furniture resells for about 50% of its original value… I decided to get into action with my idea of reselling (and sometimes delivering) mostly IKEA furniture that I find for free or that is undervalued via Craigslist and selling groups on FB.

The great thing about where I live (Orange County, CA) is that there are a lot of colleges nearby and numerous IKEA stores within driving distance, so that means a lot of used IKEA furniture floating around!

  • Chris in Amsterdam has a tendency to look for perfectionism at all stages of his side hustle and is seeking some guidance regarding how to keep from overthinking different things
  • Dan is in the pre-launch stage of his side hustle, and he has a lot of questions about the kind of content he should be including for his new audience

If you have something you’d like to ask me or an update you’d like to share, I’d love to hear from you! Leave me a voice message on the website or call in to the Side Hustle Hotline (Dial 844-9-HUSTLE // 844-948-7853), and your question may be featured on the show!

EXTENDED CUT #8: How to Recover from a Side Hustle Disaster

Notes from Chris

Episode x08

This special episode features a personal story from Chris, along with four tips for making the most of an unexpected crisis.

If you find yourself in the middle of a side hustle disaster, here are four tips that you can use in the event that your side hustle of quick highlights from this Extended Cut:

  • 1. Triage—a fancy word for prioritizing. Separate all of the other stuff from what absolutely needs to happen. It can be really overwhelming to think of the twenty different aspects to the problem, but there are probably three or so aspects that are the most critical of all. Identify those three aspects (of whatever that is) and direct your attention there first and worry about the rest later.
  • 2. Make a list. Don’t try and keep all of this in your head. Write down immediate actions as well as your biggest concern or fear. If you’re starting to think about solutions, write those down too. Write down a list of people you can talk to—people who can help!
  • 3. Make a recovery plan. And when I say “recovery,” I don’t mean for you, I mean if other people have been adversely impacted by this disaster (e.g. – your clients, customers, partners, suppliers, etc.). Ask yourself how you can rebuild those relationships, and try to identify a handful of practical action steps that you can take to begin to repair that relationship—one of which should be honest and open communication where you explain what happened and how you’re planning on fixing it. Build and maintain that trust!
  • 4. Make a “getting back on track” plan. Now, this is your plan to move forward. Use this plan to help your turn this disaster into an opportunity to be even better than before.

LISTENER Q&A:

This week we have listener questions from Sarah in Ottawa, Canada and Randy in San Mateo, CA:

  • Sarah is looking to start a side hustle as a copywriter because she loves to write and uses it in her current day job in the health field. She’s heard that LinkedIn is a great resource for copywriters, but she’s hesitant to use it for this purpose because she’s not sure if it would be appropriate for her to add that she’s starting a side hustle as a copywriter while working at her day job. Her question—what is the proper etiquette for someone managing a side hustle with a full-time job?
  • Randy is having issues finding enough people to Beta test his app, and he’s wondering what kind of resources are available to someone looking for people to test out their service.

For those of you who may not have caught it, we actually featured Randy and his side hustle back in Ep. 154. I think this is a great project that could benefit from traditional PR like Helpareporter.com.

LISTENER Q&A:

This week we have listener questions from Tom and Erin:

  • Tom is a middle school Math and Robotics teacher by day, and he does freelance voice over work by night. He says his story is very similar to Parker’s story in Ep. 5 since he’s also on Fiverr, and he’s at a point where his prices are relatively high raking in $4-600/month with just 10-12 orders. He recently received a voice-over request through his website though, and he ended up accepting that payment through PayPal. His question—what are the pros and cons of going through a service like Fiverr where they take a percentage of his revenue vs. handling his own payments through PayPal where he doesn’t have a guarantee of payment?
  • Erin started two blogs using affiliate programs after listening to Side Hustle School, but while she’s been getting some sales and a lot of click throughs, about 80% of the click-throughs aren’t generating any income for her. She’s not quite sure why some things are generating income while most of them are not, and she’s looking for resources that would better explain the Amazon Affiliate Program so that she can best utilize this channel.

LISTENER Q&A:

This week we have listener questions from Alissa in Minneapolis, MN and Justin:

  • Alissa is a writer by trade, and she currently has a corporate job which she loves. However, she figures that if she can make some money doing other things she enjoys on the side, why not? She started a tutoring business which has been going well, but she recently started blogging through the voice of her dog and both her blog and Instagram account have received a positive response.

She just signed up to be an Amazon affiliate so that she can monetize her blog, but she’s not sure if she should stick to pet-related products since it’s a blog told through the voice of her dog or if she should look for best-selling items and place those and other high priced products strategically on her blog.

  • Justin is looking to start a side hustle because he wants to have the option to work part-time whenever he’d like and invest his future in something of his own creation, but he’s struggling in the ‘idea phase’ of side hustle development. He’s looking for any helpful tips that could help him get started.

EXTENDED CUT #7: Pricing Your Product or Service

Notes from Chris

Episode x07

When you’re starting a new product or service, how do you know what to price it at? Good news: there’s a simple method you can use that will take you less than 10 minutes to apply.

If you’re struggling with pricing your product or service, here are a couple of quick highlights from this Extended Cut:

  • 1. Ask yourself: what is your time worth? Nobody can answer this question but you, and you have to be honest with yourself regarding what you’re willing to accept for the time you put into your side hustle.
  • 2. Set your initial prices on the higher end of the range that your customers are willing to pay. After all, if you can make more money for your time or product, why not see if it’s an option?

WEEKLY RECAP: What Should You Name Your Side Hustle Idea?

Notes from Chris

Episode 204

LISTENER Q&A:

This week we had a couple of listener emails and a listener question from Liz in South Carolina:

  • Liz feels that she’s finally landed on a viable side hustle idea—she’s researched it, priced it, and is even using skills that she already has. She even thinks that her start-up costs will be low and totally manageable! All of this has Liz squarely on the right path, however, she has one road block on her side hustle journey: picking out a name for her side hustle. She can’t really launch her side hustle website or build a brand without it, so she’s looking for a way to pick out a name quickly so that she can get the ball rolling.

If you’re like Liz and are struggling to find a name for your side hustle, here are two tips for picking out something that will lead you on the path to side hustle success: 1) be descriptive (For examples, see Ep. 158 & Ep. 201 and 2) don’t be afraid to pick something clever (For examples, see Ep. 27 & Ep. 198).

**Tune into the Weekly Recap to hear a couple listener updates and get a more in-depth look at these two naming tips!

If you have something you’d like to ask me or an update you’d like to share, I’d love to hear from you! Leave me a voice message on the website or call in to the Side Hustle Hotline (Dial 844-9-HUSTLE // 844-948-7853), and your question may be featured on the show!

Weekly Recap: Free Video Training + How to Start a Workshop

Notes from Chris

Episode 197

LISTENER Q&A:

This week we had a listener email from Julie and a listener question from Melinda:

  • Julie wrote in to say that she has officially launched her side hustle, Peace, Love, and Sisters—a weekend workshop for sisters. She got the idea for her side hustle after attending a couple’s workshop with her husband, and she realized that there was an opportunity to create something similar for sisters since there wasn’t really a venue for such a thing.
  • Melinda is a high school English teacher with a Masters in Communication, and she’s considering starting a side hustle as a workshop facilitator where she would teach others how to create meaningful workshops. Someone she knows recommended that she join this Association that would facilitate networking and connections, but Melinda says the fees are a little much for her current budget. Her question—should she join this Association anyways because its benefits outweigh the costs, or are there other ways she can network with those in her field?

**To hear more about Julie’s side hustle update and Melinda’s listener question plus my response, tune into the Weekly Recap.
