This week we had a listener question from Amanda:

  • Amanda has been a face painter for the last seven years, but she’s essentially hustled herself to the bone, and it has taken a physical toll on her and her health. She’s really enjoyed episodes featuring side hustlers who are bringing in passive income, and she’s thinking about adding an additional branch to her business that would allow her to bring in a passive income on the side in addition to the physical face painting that she already does. Right now Amanda is considering starting a YouTube channel for this purpose, but she hasn’t really heard of any episodes that use this model.

  • Shannon just purchased her first domain, but she’s still pretty uncertain about the whole process. She can see from the Google domain that she purchased that she has the ability to link up through them to web hosting using Squarespace or Blogger, but while she is looking to start with a blog, she’d like to leave the possibility of adding on a storefront or something similar further down the road. She doesn’t want to make the wrong decision, so she wants to know which blogging site I would recommend that she start with.

  • Ravi has been getting a lot of inspiration from the show and has started to brainstorm for his first side hustle. Naturally, he tries to run these ideas by his friends, but they aren’t really entrepreneurially motivated and have given him a lot of negative feedback and energy. He wants to know how to stay motivated despite the negativity he’s receiving about his ideas.

EXTENDED CUT #5: How to Choose Between Multiple Ideas

Once you’ve learned the power of observation, being able to identify potential ideas is rarely a problem. The problem lies in knowing which ideas to choose at any particular time!

What do you do when you have multiple ideas? Here are a couple tips to help you get started:

  • 1. Get clear on your goals. The idea that you choose should connect directly to those goals. There are a lot of different potential side hustle goals out there, so you need to know the outcome that you want.
  • 2. Whenever possible, remove the pressure from the decision. It’s natural to feel a lot of pressure when making any kind of big career decision, but you should not experience that kind of pressure for a side hustle. It should be something that makes you feel secure.

SIDE HUSTLE SELECTOR:

If you already know the hustle you’re going to commit to during your month-long plan, great! But since a key part of hustling is learning to brainstorm and generate multiple ideas (just like you saw in the first week’s notes), it’s also important to learn how to compare ideas against one another in search of the best possible one at any given time.

She’s also not really driven enough to reach a point where it’s making a profit either, so she’s wondering whether she should stick with it and give it a year or abandon it entirely.
  • Gavin is looking to take his artwork and photography to the next level by putting it on t-shirts, mugs, and canvas, but he’s having a really difficult time getting an online presence. He often finds that he’s so consumed with perfecting every aspect of his website that it’s challenging to focus on the bigger picture and is looking for guidance.
