Q&A: Is it ethical to sell the same thing at different prices?

What It’s About

A listener is wondering about a common dilemma when it comes to pricing.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1308

Is there anything wrong with selling to a range of customers at different prices—and if not, how can you do it without someone finding out and getting mad?

Sometimes people are surprised to hear that it’s possible to sell the same thing to different customers at different prices. Your initial reaction might be to think that this is unfair! But is it really?

That’s what this caller is wondering about. I’m going to give you a few different examples of how this happens all the time and what the implications are when you’re learning to set a price for what you’re selling.

“Hi this is Becky from Manchester over in the UK and I’ve been listening to the show for the past couple of years. The puns still get me. I’d like to know if its ethical to sell the same thing to different people at different prices?

I heard you say something about this in an interview the other day, and was wondering if you could say more. First, *is* it ethical to sell the same thing at different prices? And second, how do you do it? Wouldn’t people see what other people paid and then get upset?”

TBT: English Language Game Throws Down Amazon Gauntlet

What It’s About

An update from an English teacher who turned his passion for verbs into online income.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1307

Welcome to Throwback Thursday / “Where are they now?” where we take an in-depth look at someone who’s story has evolved considerably since we first featured them.

Last week we heard from a blogger in India who earns affiliate commissions on financial products. This is a mature market in the U.S. but still fairly new in India, so he’s been able to profit from it quite well.

Today, in our latest feature, we’ll hear from Alex Bricker, an English teacher who turned his passion for verbs into online income. We first featured him many days ago – about two years ago, in fact – in Episode 499.

What’s happened since? A lot of things have gone well, but not everything

Listen to today’s episode to hear Alex’s updates…

Q&A: How to charge for a travel service post-quarantine?

What It’s About

A listener sees the opportunity for a post-quarantine travel service that connects long-distance couples.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1306

If you have not yet had a question answered on the podcast, just let me know—come to SideHustleSchool.com/questions and we’ll get you in the queue.

But this was a good question from Jon and it’s been 200 days since his last one. He’s wondering about how to charge for a travel service, especially in the post-COVID world.

“Hey, Chris. My name is Jon and I have a question at the cross-section of travel and Side hustle and I thought, who better to ask than you, my friend? I’ve been exploring places for me and someone very close to me to visit. She’s on the west coast of the U.S. and I’m on the East Coast. And with all the quarantining, we’re really excited to be able to get out and meet up and see each other here soon. I’ve really enjoyed the process of scouring flights and times and dates to cities within our budgets that we could meet up somewhere in the middle of the country. And I’d like to do this as a side hustle for others in the same boat.

I really have enjoyed it and I love connecting people and it just checks a lot of boxes for me. So my question is, it’s a two-parter. How would you recommend I charge for such a service? And also, what are the ways that I could find clients and people in the same boat? Thanks. Keep fighting the good fight. Chris, we need it now more than ever. A lot of uncertainty. And I always love your message and always love the great work you and your team are doing by.”

Wichita Native Gets Paid to Show Off His City

What It’s About

A college graduate gets paid to post on Instagram about his beloved city — Wichita, Kansas!

Words of Wisdom

Although Landon loves the extra money from his side hustle, one downfall is that running a social media platform means that his screen time increased exponentially. However, one hack Landon has found to avoid spending too much time on social media is a Social Media Scheduler. “I can spend a little more time once a week and plan a week’s worth of posts and not have to think about it.”

Fun Fact

One of Wichita’s strangest laws is that people are not allowed to sell cherry pie a la mode on Sundays. Another odd rule is that anyone can be jailed for up to a year if they make lewd remarks over the phone.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1305
Landon Husling and his wife Candace were high school sweethearts who grew up in Andover, a suburb of Wichita, Kansas. When it came time to go to college, the two decided to stay in town and attend Wichita State University.

After graduation, the couple moved away for nine months—and when they returned, they found that most of their college friends were gone. The friends were in search of a new place to start their lives, because according to them, Wichita just wasn’t cool enough.

As a native, Landon knew that the city had much more to offer than people knew. So, he started an Instagram account called Wichita Life ICT to highlight all the fun attractions and cool places he enjoyed in the city.

At first, Landon didn’t tell anyone—not even Candace—about his new project. He wanted to wait until the account got bigger to share what he was doing. But she knew that he hardly ever used his personal account, so when she saw him on his phone working on a post, she asked him about it. His secret was out!

This was May of 2017 and Landon had somewhere around 3,000 followers. By November of the same year, that number grew to be just under 5,000. At that point, local businesses wanted to pay Landon to advertise on the account.

Then all of a sudden, Landon was holding a check for $75 in exchange for a few posts from a local salon.

Over the next year, Landon continued to post on Wichita Life ICT. He also began to repost other people’s photos of Wichita, which was welcomed by many Instagram users now that he had a large following.

By June of 2018, Landon had close to 7,000 followers. He also had another idea for how to expand his platform. He loved listening to podcasts, and wanted to create his own. So, he downloaded the free editing app Audacity and got to work.

After doing this for two and a half years, Landon began to run other people’s Instagram accounts at the end of 2019. What was once a fun passion project to highlight the wonderful parts of his hometown, is now a side hustle with three different income streams.

Currently, about 50% of his earnings come from running other social media accounts, 35% is from advertising on the podcast, and the last 15% is from Instagram posts.

Landon can’t wait to grow the Wichita Life brand even more. He just started an online talk show and is building a weekly newsletter, all while continuing to grow his Instagram account and his podcast subscribers. Eventually, he’d love to start hosting some events.

He says that even if he wasn’t making money from Wichita Life, he would still be investing his time and energy into the platform.

CLASSROOM: Create Content By Answering Questions

What It’s About

Find your ideal customer by finding what they’re searching for.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1304

For the second half of the year, this Classroom series will appear twice a month instead of every week. On alternating Mondays, we’ll have another Q&A episode.

I was going to call this episode “Simple and Effective SEO Tips.” If you start to learn anything about SEO, you’ll find articles all about keyword research. This can be very helpful in understanding your ideal customer—what are they searching for? What specific words do they use? How do they phrase the searches?

Your goal is to find something a lot of people are searching for that doesn’t have much competition.

For example, if you sold a guide to solving the difficult NYT Sunday crossword, and you found a bunch of people searching “How do I solve crossword puzzles?” but not a lot of results, that would be great. You might want to create a page on your website title “How to Solve Crossword Puzzles.”

But let’s go beyond merely knowing how to create a page or two based on what you learn. One of the things you’ll notice is that people ask questions when they use search engines.

Well, guess what? If you’re struggling in coming up with topics to write about (or otherwise use for content creation), this is your answer.

You can create content based entirely around answering questions that people are asking. It helps you brainstorm, it gives you a task, and it ensures that what you’re working on isn’t going to be completely irrelevant.

Listen to today’s episode to learn more…

THIS WEEK’S ASSIGNMENT:

Power Plant Specialist Tugs On Archery Business String

What It’s About

An archery tool kit that hits the bullseye with 6-figure income.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Butch has some great advice about pricing: “Don’t be afraid to price your products high enough to make money. We are lucky to not have any market competition (and we keep wondering when that’s gonna happen), but people still have sticker shock when they see our prices. Rather than apologize for how expensive our products are, we make sure that the value is obvious, both in quality and features.”

Fun Fact

There are millions of archers active in the USA. Even that is a big enough market to go hyper-niche in. By tackling one problem for this market segment it’s possible to build a lucrative side hustle.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1303
Butch Baker has been an archer for most of his life. In parts of Idaho where he lives, it’s a way of life. There’s a huge community built up around the sport. And, when it comes to archery, those in the know, know that if you’re serious about bows and hunting you’d always be working on and optimizing your equipment.

So while Butch spent his days working as a power plant generation specialist, he’d dabble in his passion for archery and bows during his downtime, mostly at night and on weekends.

Something that Butch spent a large amount of time on was making new bowstrings. You see, when it comes to archery the string doesn’t get much credit. However, that same string does most of the propulsion to hurl the arrow forward. The right handmade string can aid in shooting faster and more reliably.

But… twisting bowstrings in the appropriate way is harder than you might think. There are problems that only special equipment can help with. Enter Butch! As a top-notch member of the archery community he knew these problems better than anyone.

He decided to take aim at creating a product that would solve the bowstring building conundrum. Using the tools and machinery he already had, Butch assembled a toolkit of trays, struts, jigs, and pulleys that when combined made the ultimate string building system.

In his excitement, he posted a picture of the kit on a popular archery forum. Instantly, someone offered to buy it. Since Butch already had some ideas on how the design could be improved, he sold version one and took aim at version two. It too, promptly sold when he posted a photo of it.

Butch felt like he was shooting with his eyes closed, yet somehow hitting the bullseye.

He’d tried side hustles before and failed but this time it looked like he found success almost by accident. Because of the interest he’d already received, he decided this was something worth pursuing.

To get the cash he’d need to setup a workshop, Butch sold an old nineteen fifties trailer his family had received for free a year earlier. The money went toward buying equipment to transform their garage. Butch set himself a rule: after this expense, there could be no more money spent on the business. Any future costs would need to be covered by selling the bow string making jigs.

With that, the deal was done and soon, Baker Archery Products—BAP for short—was quivered and ready for the range.

Word spreads in small communities, particularly if you do a good job. Which Butch does. Second only to his design and fabrication skills are his customer service skills. It’s essential each and every customer has a great experience—because if positive word of mouth travels fast in niche communities, the only thing faster is negative word of mouth.

That customer-centric attitude goes into crafting the products themselves. Butch, and now his family, still make every piece by hand in their home workshop in Idaho. Customers like that attention to detail but it’s also one of the roadblocks to BAP’s growth.

Still, fast growth is a good problem to have, especially for a profitable side business. This one generated over two hundred thousand dollars last year, forty thousand of which was profit.

While that’s enough to make a difference in his family’s life, it’s not quite enough to drop the tools at the power plant. For now, he’s continuing to put in the hours for both jobs.

Q&A: How can I fast track my idea?

What It’s About

Is there a way to learn in advance which side hustle idea isn’t going to work out?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1302

Not every side hustle idea is going to work out … but is there a way to learn in advance which ones are more likely to succeed?

That’s what today’s caller wants to know!

Of course there are no guarantees – I sometimes get questions like “How can I make money without doing any work? I do not know how to make money fall from the sky just yet. The last book was The Money Tree, so maybe the next will be It’s Raining Money—but until then, let’s talk about whether there are some things you can do to eliminate bad ideas early and set yourself up for the best possible odds of success.

“Hi Chris, this is Rebecca from Seattle. I’ve been a big fan of your work since the $100 Startup and just finished The Money Tree and really enjoyed it. The story got me thinking about this question, can I fast-track the process of trying out ideas?

In The Money Tree, Jake’s first service attempt fails because it’s too generic, and because he’s not really qualified to offer it. I get that—but I’m wondering if there was any way for him to figure that out in advance. How can I save the work required and put that time to better use in the first place? Can’t wait to hear from you.”

Q&A: How to narrow down a personal finance target market?

What It’s About

A listener wants to help two different audiences. How can she narrow her focus?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1301

Let’s talk about narrowing down today. A listener in Dallas wants to help teens and young adults learn personal finance—but the groups she has in mind are very different.

How should she choose a focus?

“My side hustle is personal finance classes for students to prepare them for all the big money decisions that await them in the real world. From the time students graduate high school to the time they graduate college, they’re making some of the biggest financial decisions of their whole lives. Their education loans, career choices, as well as the daily spending and saving decisions that they make and the patterns that they set. I think there’s a huge need for great personal finance education, and I think I’m the person to do it.

My question revolves around choosing a target market. I’m interested in serving high school students and college students and recent college grads. All of these groups have a need for personal finance education. But I’d have to market differently for high schoolers. I’d have to market to their parents or schools. Whereas college grads may see more of the need themselves. I’d love your thoughts on how to narrow down a target market. Well, I don’t want to close the door on possible customers. I think we’ll have better success in narrowing the target audience at first.”

TBT: Blogger Explores Affiliate Marketing in India

What It’s About

An update from blogger in India who built his hustle on affiliate commissions.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1300

Welcome to Throwback Thursday / “Where are they now?” where we take an in-depth look at someone who’s story has evolved considerably since we first featured them.

Last week’s episode was all about a woman in Seattle who cleans up in a home organizing business, donating the items to people in need. She’s doing very well and is closing in on 2,000 billable hours.

Today, in our latest feature, we’ll hear from Pardeep in India, who originally quit his job for a startup that failed, and then regrouped with a blog called Cash Overflow that succeeded.

He earns commissions on referring readers to credit cards and insurance products in India. This market is quite established in the U.S. and other western countries, but it’s not nearly as mature over in his part of the world—which presents challenges, but also opportunities.

Listen to today’s episode to hear Pardeep’s updates…

Q&A: Where to find free music for paid events?

What It’s About

A listener wants to play background music at her virtual events. How does she do it legally?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1299

Copyrighted music actually belongs to artists … you can’t just borrow it and use it for your own commercial purposes.

This is perfectly logical if you think about it, but I understand why people are confused because of all the streaming services like YouTube, Spotify, and Pandora.

Maybe you’ve found the perfect track from U2 or John Legend or Lizzo, but you can’t use it your business without having a license for it. That’s why most podcasts, including this one, use music that is specifically produced for commercial licensing.

Anyway, today’s caller has been hosting a series of virtual events to connect with other moms interested in entrepreneurship, and she’d like to play music in the background. How can she do this legally … but without paying?

“Hey there Chris it’s Jen from LA and I’m a long time listener, first time question asker. I really like the new format by the way. My question is, where can I find free music to use? I’ve been hosting a series of virtual events to connect with other moms interested in entrepreneurship, and I’d like to play music in the background during one of our collaborative work sessions.

Since this is a paid service that I’m broadcasting, I realize I probably shouldn’t just throw on a stream from Beyonce … even though I did it once (don’t tell!). Where can I find music I can use for free without getting into licensing issues? Thanks Chris!”
