Weekly Recap: Should You Open a Retail Store While Working a Job?

Notes from Chris

Episode 421

LISTENER QUESTIONS:

I recently received a great email from Rachel. She has a question that a number or people have asked in different ways, but I love the way that she phrased it. Here’s what Rachel had to say:

  • Hi Chris! Today, I was filled with excitement as I opened my Amazon box to the bright, yellow cover of your book. I can’t wait to dig in! My question for you: is it possible to create a side hustle for a brick-and-mortar business while maintaining your day job? It seems like many people’s success is with low overhead online businesses, but my dream is to open a wellness studio. Am I biting off too much to chew with a side hustle of this nature?Thank you for taking the time to read this!

It’s certainly possible to do that and indeed a lot of folks have done so. It’s just harder than something that’s strictly online, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it. If it’s right for you and you can handle it, don’t let anyone dissuade you.

If you can be dissuaded or for anyone else out there wondering about this, listen to the Weekly Recap to learn more!

If you have something you’d like to ask me or an update you’d like to share, I’d love to hear from you. Leave me a voice message on the website or call into the Side Hustle Hotline (Dial 844-9-HUSTLE // 844-948-7853), and your question may be featured on the show!

Weekly Recap: What Kind of Profit Margin Should You Have?

Notes from Chris

Episode 414

THEMES & TAKEAWAYS:

Let’s talk about profit margins! We had an episode (Ep. 412) a couple of days ago about artificial flowers for wedding ceremonies. I mentioned towards the end of the episode how this was really great because once he acquired his inventory he essentially has 100% profit margins—at least compared to a traditional florist who has to acquire these flowers over and over again on a daily basis.

If you’re curious about what your profit margins should be, check out the recap to learn more!

  • Ep. 410 – After receiving a “lame” marriage proposal, this former contractor sets up shop helping others create memorable proposal stories. Last year, she made a lot of people happy… and she also made $450,000
  • Ep. 411 – This freelance illustrator did design work for Google and Nickelodeon, but after giving a talk at his church he decides to start a podcast—which now earns up to $70,000 a year on the side
  • Ep. 412 – This project manager was astonished at how expensive a wedding could be. After shelling out a lot of money for his own, he starts a service to help engaged couples save thousands

Weekly Recap: How to Identify Side Hustle Ideas in Your Workplace

Notes from Chris

Episode 393

THEMES & TAKEAWAYS:

We had quite an eclectic mix of stories this week! I’d like to begin today’s recap by addressing something from Sumit Bansal’s story in Ep. 387. Sumit was able to create a lucrative side hustle using skills that he picked up in his day job. Sometimes your hustle idea can be found in your workplace.

In Day 6 of the Side Hustle book, I told the story of Meredith Floyd-Preston, a Waldorf teacher who created her own curriculum and then sold that to other teachers (Ep. 13). She knew that Waldorf teachers were expected to teach in a certain way, and it took a lot of time for them to design their lessons from the ground up each week. She provided templates and ideas they could use, and then, of course, they could further customize them.

Listen to the recap for more on this concept, including my response to the question, “But won’t I get in trouble with my employer??”

LISTENER QUESTIONS & UPDATES:

Today we have a listener email from Emily and a listener update from Faith:

  • Emily: “Hi Chris! Thank you so much for sharing side hustler stories on your podcas—it’s been a big inspiration for me. Currently, I’ve cast a wide net trying to find the right idea. My question is this: when do I need to open a business bank account? And can I have one bank account for multiple potential revenue streams? I haven’t made much money yet, so it doesn’t seem necessary, but I do want to avoid any future complications.”
  • Faith is a local Portland listener who has recently been checking out the show and binge listening. Inspired by the stories she’s heard, she put an ad up on Craigslist to offer a decluttering and organizing service for the new year, and she’s already secured her first client!

If you have something you’d like to ask me or an update you’d like to share, I’d love to hear from you. Leave me a voice message on the website or call into the Side Hustle Hotline (Dial 844-9-HUSTLE // 844-948-7853), and your question may be featured on the show!

EPISODES FROM THIS WEEK:

  • Ep. 387 – An IBM employee in India creates a series of Microsoft Excel tutorials, earning hundreds of dollars per sale
  • Ep. 388 – This expat’s local pub quiz night started as a hobby. It turned into an idea to sell his collection of 5,000 trivia questions online, earning passive income month after month
  • Ep. 389 – An architect creates minimalist onesies and t-shirts for his own kids—then turns it into a profitable side hustle
  • Ep. 390 – After struggling with insecurities, a woman takes charge of her life and creates a cosmetic brand designed to boost confidence

Weekly Recap: Set Your Goals for 2018!

Notes from Chris

Episode 372

THEMES & TAKEAWAYS:

As we’re kicking off this new season, I’d like to read some comments to you courtesy of Ryan Grant from Ep. 367—our second day of the new season. Ryan had an incredible story about buying and reselling items from big box stores that allowed him to make hundreds of thousands of dollars which is pretty amazing! He actually did end up quitting his day job, and here’s something he said that I really liked:

“When making the decision to quit my full-time job, the main factors were: I knew I would regret it if I didn’t take the chance, and I wasn’t fully happy at the position I was working. I felt like I was just existing as opposed to being in control of my life.

So on September 20, 2013, I quit my job as an accountant to pursue selling online full time. I walked out of the office on that day with a big smile on my face, and I’ve never looked back.”

It’s not that you have to quit your job. But you should be in control of your life. No one else should be deciding your future.

However you’ve arrived at this shared space where every day you hear about people taking control of their lives in one way or another, ask yourself “What will you regret if you don’t take the chance?” and if starting a project is part of the answer, well, let’s make it happen this year.

LISTENER CALL-INS:

Today we have listener voicemails from Cameron and Stephen:

  • Cameron is considering starting a reselling side hustle where he would purchase all of these products that are valuable by themselves and resell them together as part of a kit (which he thinks would add value), and he’s wondering what kinds of things it would be important to keep in mind for a side hustle like this.
  • Stephen was looking for a mobile pedicure service for his elderly mother in Florida who lives in a care facility, but he had a really hard time finding one. He ended up using someone that wasn’t necessarily a manicurist by trade who did a good job, but he thinks that there’s a real market for this type of service and would encourage anyone in the area to start it up.

If you have something you’d like to ask me or an update you’d like to share, I’d love to hear from you! Leave me a voice message on the website or call into the Side Hustle Hotline (Dial 844-9-HUSTLE // 844-948-7853), and your question may be featured on the show!

FUN FACT OF THE WEEK:

You know how in Times Square they drop the ball to commemorate the New Year? Well, in Brasstown, NC, they do something a bit different called the Possum Drop.

And their motto is “Keep your ball, NYC, we’ve got the possum.” The Possum Drop is fairly self-explanatory—it basically involves a live possum being lowered from height at midnight. Why are they doing this? Just because, well, I don’t actually know, but it’s been going for more than 30 years.

By the way, no possums are harmed in this process; it’s more like a possum lowering than a drop. However, to be fair, the possum doesn’t have much say in it.

For next year’s new year’s plans, if NYC is expensive, head to Brasstown, NC for a very different celebration.

EPISODES FROM THIS WEEK:

Here’s what we heard this week on Side Hustle School! Listen to this week’s recap for a more comprehensive highlight reel.

  • Ep. 367 – A young accountant learns the art of reselling, purchasing textbooks, dental floss, and Cheerios from retail stores in bulk—then earns hundreds of thousands of dollars in profit by selling it online
  • Ep. 368 – Two immigrants from Laos meet the needs of an underserved community in a $50,000 per year hustle
  • Ep. 369 – After first rejecting Instagram as being “only for selfies,” a Sri Lankan designer starts a popular account that earns steady affiliate commissions
  • Ep. 370 – After struggling with sleeplessness for years, an account executive learns to make herbal remedies—then sells them to other tired people, earning up to $3,000/month on the side
  • Ep. 371 – A no-risk model to earn passive income by uploading t-shirt designs to Amazon.com

Season II Begins! Create a New Source of Income in 2018

Notes from Chris

Episode 366

Welcome to Side Hustle School, Season II! We are getting underway with an all-new journey! If we haven’t met before, my name is Chris Guillebeau, I’m the host and guide of Side Hustle School.

Every day, 7 days a week, I bring you a different story of someone—perhaps someone like you—who takes action to create more freedom and more options for their life. For new listeners, I wanted to explain a bit more of what it’s about, and for our many longtime listeners, I’ll tell you some new things that are coming up.

The purpose of this show—our singular mission—is to help you create a new source of income without quitting your job. It’s not about having a startup, risking it all, borrowing money or looking for investors—nothing like that. It’s about using the skills you already have and going from idea to income.

Our goal is to help busy people who don’t necessarily want to be entrepreneurs but do like the idea of making money apart from their paycheck do exactly that. And they’re doing that—thousands of people all over the world—by starting a side hustle.

People use this phrase a lot. What do I mean by it? I’m talking about an income-generating project—not a part-time job or driving for Uber!

It’s about making an asset that works for you.

Being able to wake up to money in your bank account. Or to be busy with your job but still earn that extra cash. Let’s make this your year of taking action! I’ll be here every day, and I hope you’ll join me. There’s a new episode every day, so stay tuned.

Here’s to your hustle!

Weekly Recap: What if Someone Steals Your Idea??

Notes from Chris

Episode 351

THEMES & TAKEAWAYS:

I have a bunch of stuff to share with you today, but first, I’d like to talk about stealing ideas. What happens if someone comes along and steals one of your ideas or designs?

What if you have this really great idea, but you’re too afraid to say something about it or ask someone about it because you’re worried about someone taking it? Maybe it even holds you back from creating a website for it!

This question comes up over and over again—as a matter of fact, it came up the last time I was in L.A. for an event. A friend of mine named Harry Campbell (aka “The Rideshare Guy”) was also there at the event, and he shared a really insightful analogy with the audience: your idea is 1% of the total value of your side hustle. Everything else—the execution, the implementation, making it happen—that’s the 99%.

If you too are concerned about someone stealing your side hustle idea, listen to the Weekly Recap to learn more!

LISTENER QUESTIONS:

Today we have a listener email from James and a listener voicemail from Stephanie:

  • James: “Hello, Chris! Last week I found a new reason to re-commit myself to finding a side hustle. I work for a company that lays off a percentage of its staff annually. Every year, come November, I have to say farewell to two or three coworkers that I’ve been working with for years—it’s become an annual holiday tradition.

I’m safe following the last one, but I know that it’s only a matter of time before my number is up. Having a side hustle (or two or three) would go a long way to relieving the anxiety, the stress, and the survivor’s guilt that I’ve gone through every year.

But every time I explore a potential side hustle, my inner critic pops up and lists all the reasons it will never works: “You’re not an artist, you know nothing about web marketing, and other people are already doing that, and a lot better than you could.”

I’ve tried numerous side hustles in the past and have always failed, which may explain why I don’t have the confidence exhibited by the people you highlight on your show. But, I have to remind myself, there’s a chance that I only have one more year of my enjoyable, well-paying, benefits-providing job before I find myself on the street.

  • Stephanie is a professional artist and designer who has been interested in being an entrepreneur since her high school days of painting murals for friends and family. After getting her BFA at art school, she began working as a graphic designer, and during this time, she started a calligraphy side hustle that has since become her full-time job (growing to six-figures).

Despite loving what she’s doing now, she can’t shake the itch to start something new. She worries that her skill set is too specific and that any new side project would overlap with her day job which could potentially cannibalize and devalue her current job. Should she avoid starting anything similar and instead channel her overactive entrepreneurial urges into something non-art related (but that she may not be as good at)?

If you have something you’d like to ask me or an update you’d like to share, I’d love to hear from you! Leave me a voice message on the website or call into the Side Hustle Hotline (Dial 844-9-HUSTLE // 844-948-7853), and your question may be featured on the show!

EPISODES FROM THIS WEEK:

Here’s what we heard this week on Side Hustle School! Listen to this week’s recap for a more comprehensive highlight reel.

Weekly Recap: Starting and Ending a Seasonal Side Hustle

Notes from Chris

Episode 344

THEMES & TAKEAWAYS:

In our forty-ninth weekly recap, we’ll focus on a couple of different concepts that popped up this week including the pros and cons of launching a seasonal side hustle.

Around this time of year, I always go on what I call my Annual Review trip. This is something I’ve been doing myself for the last 10 years and is the single thing I can use to trace the productivity I’ve had and the goals I’ve been able to accomplish. Essentially, it’s a measure of my success. If you’re interested in learning more about the process, start here!

LISTENER QUESTIONS:

Today we have a listener email from Lisa and a listener voicemail from Mimi:

  • Lisa: “I had to tell you what I did today. I have been listening to SHS all year and pre-ordered your new book. Like a lot of your listeners I’m sure, have a bunch of ideas floating around but I haven’t pulled the trigger on anything.

I started to read your book and went through 6 days of it, and then got stalled at the napkin exercise when life got in the way for a while. So, I decided that I would devote the day before Thanksgiving to Side Hustle Camp!

I made myself an agenda, lit a fire, put on comfy clothes, and spent the day reading the whole book so I would see the big picture of how everything would all go. Then, I scheduled how I can go back through the book and all the exercises by the end of the year. I will launch in 2017!

And then, the most exciting thing is I bought a domain name that I’ve ALWAYS wanted and bought the 2-year hosting platform on InMotion after listening to Extended Cut 3. What a day! I am super excited, and I knew you’d be happy to hear this. Feel free to share the idea of Side Hustle Camp to anyone. Sometimes you need to create a fun and devoted day to get yourself unstuck.

Thank you so much for everything you do! You are really helping to change my life when I need it (I am suddenly trying to make extra money to support my 91-year-old Mama). Cheers!”

  • Mimi has decided that she’d like to start a podcast as her side hustle, but the mechanics of it give her pause. She’s hoping to get an idea of what goes into producing a show like Side Hustle School and what I would recommend for beginners.

If you’d like to start a podcast of your own, check out EXTENDED CUT #11: Lessons in Podcasting on our monthly Extended Cuts page!

If you have something you’d like to ask me or an update you’d like to share, I’d love to hear from you! Leave me a voice message on the website or call into the Side Hustle Hotline (Dial 844-9-HUSTLE // 844-948-7853), and your question may be featured on the show!

Weekly Recap: How to Find Things to Sell Online

Notes from Chris

Episode 337

THEMES & TAKEAWAYS:

In our forty-eighth weekly recap, we’ll focus on a couple of different concepts that popped up this week—identity and belonging, thinking through who you’re going to serve with your side hustle, and how to find products to sell.

Today we have a couple of listener emails from Andy and Kyle and a listener voicemail from Scott:

  • Andy: “I always understood from your writing and podcast that leveraging your passion or career is a great way to find something to sell. The impression I get is that by being embedded in an industry you are aware of how it works and (hopefully) are able to figure out a way to make a side hustle in it. That is, as long as you keep your head up and eyes open for all the opportunities around us.

But in a recent recap episode, you mentioned that you sold Legos for a time even though you were not especially interested in them. My question is, how does one find arbitrage opportunities like that in an apparently totally random field? Or more directly, how did you get into selling Legos? Thanks for your help!”

  • Kyle: “I have a question about content or information you make available to potential customers. The side hustle I’m working on contains a lot of information, and I’m not sure if I should lean out the information or pile on all the details for people. For me, I like to have all the information to absorb but a lot of people want just the basics.

How would you advise I go about this problem? Give all the info or release a little bit every week and charge for the meat and potatoes? I think the more you know the better, but people have a short attention span.”

  • Scott has been listening to the show for a while now and has his own side hustle selling rustic wood decorations. It’s totally fulfilling his creative desires, but what he’d like to learn is 1) how to use it to create passive income as well, and 2) how to overcome his time and geographic restraints so that he can take his side hustle to the next level.

  • Ep. 331 – After first learning Adobe Photoshop to forge his report card, a Hawaiian baseball enthusiast creates an apparel line that goes on to earn millions of dollars
  • Ep. 332 – In this ribetting feature, a high school science teacher earns an extra $3,000/month removing an invasive species of toads throughout Florida
  • Ep. 333 – A woman who undergoes bariatric weight loss surgery creates a subscription service to deliver monthly supplements and resources
