Behavior Analyst Creates Resources for Parents and Teachers

What It’s About

Twin sisters create resources to help children with autism and their families.

Words of Wisdom

Amelia shares important clarity regarding monetizing a blog, “if you’re looking to make money quickly – don’t start a blog. It was 15 months before we started seeing real growth. We could have probably taken a faster track by creating an online course first instead.”

Fun Fact

ABA has been around since the 1970s, and the science continues to develop.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1480
Amelia Dalphonse found her calling 17 years ago while she was teaching with Head Start, a program that provides early childhood education to low-income children and families. She’d worked with all kinds of kids over the years, but one, in particular, stood out. He was a four-year-old boy with frequent tantrums and very little verbal communication. Amelia and her fellow teacher wanted to help him, so they began researching the boy’s behavior and discovered that he might be autistic.

Wanting to learn more, Amelia then began studying Applied Behavior Analysis, a scientific approach that can be used to reduce challenging behavior and teach new skills in children with autism. Amelia liked Applied Behavior Analysis, or ABA strategies because they’re easy for non-professionals to learn and can have lasting benefits for the child if they are used consistently.

Not too long after she started her research, she ended up switching jobs to work with children with autism. She wanted to understand more, so she decided to pursue a master’s degree and become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), again specializing in working with children with autism.

And this is what brings us to the side hustle part of the story. Amelia started a blog called accessibleaba.com, hoping to share insights to help parents understand more about the field and their child. Soon afterwards, around Christmas 2018, her twin sister Dianna came for a visit. Dianna enjoys writing, so she offered to write some posts.

They started out blogging just for parents, but eventually expanded to have a separate blog for each of their target audiences: parents, teachers, and professionals. Together, their blogs get over 40,000 page views a month.

Amelia admits that as difficult as the pandemic has been, it’s also been the catalyst that has pushed them to work even harder. They’re bringing in around $1,500/month through a mix of book sales, membership fees, and supervision services. However, they have really just started to focus on monetization. For most of 2020, they focused solely on growing the blog and developing the courses.

They know that if they want to make more money, they need to come up with a better product or offer, improve their marketing, reach a new audience, or take some other action. One of those things—or perhaps all of them—is exactly what they plan to do.

Season III Begins! Make 2019 Your Best Year Yet

Notes from Chris

Episode 731

Welcome to Side Hustle School, Season III!!! 2 years ago I had an idea to make something for people who didn’t identify with a lot of the traditional messages about starting a business.

That was exactly 730 days ago. Since then we’ve had a nonstop, no break series of stories that are designed to inspire and equip you with the tools you need.

So for anyone new out there, here’s a super quick intro:

My name is Chris Guillebeau, I’m the host and guide of Side Hustle School. For my entire adult life—which is, it’s true, not short—I’ve been starting projects that make money without costing much money.

The whole purpose of Side Hustle School is to shine the spotlight on regular people who are starting income-generating projects of their own. Every day this year, I’ll tell you how they got their ideas, how they made those ideas happen, what mistakes they made or challenges they had to overcome, and what the outcome has been.

Often times you’ll notice that even though some people are making a lot of money, what they find to be the most valuable is the confidence and self-worth they gain merely by unlocking that new source of income.

Before I go any further, let me give you a few examples from Season II. These are all true stories of real people that you’ll hear every day.

Here’s to your hustle!

Weekly Recap: Nothing is Sacred, So Look Out for Yourself

Notes from Chris

Episode 631

THEMES & TAKEAWAYS:

I sometimes talk about how you shouldn’t build your business so that it’s dependent on any one platform or network.

In this episode, I mention that we at team Side Hustle School got an experience of living that out this week. Our podcast network that we’ve partnered with since first beginning made an announcement that they were no longer going to produce podcasts!

It felt a little strange since that was their main business—it was like going to the grocery store and the store saying that they no longer sell food.

First of all: we’re not going anywhere.

We have plenty of other options to distribute the show, and your listening experience shouldn’t change at all.

Second: Nothing is sacred or permanent.

Don’t put all your trust, attention, or retirement plans in any network, platform, or company. Or even any medium—I love podcasting but everything changes.

  • Ep. 629 – To get some business experience on the cheap, this teacher creates and sells his own bow ties. When he’s ready to move on, he sells the business itself

Weekly Recap: Don’t Compete with Amazon

Notes from Chris

Episode 617

THEMES & TAKEAWAYS:

A listener by the name of James reached out to ask what my advice would be for people looking to compete with Amazon and eBay—how can small independent shops thrive against big companies?

My advice is don’t compete … you could never compete with Amazon, fair or unfair. But meanwhile, thousands of people are making a living using Amazon’s models (Fulfilled by Amazon, Merch by Amazon, etc.). So you either adapt to one of those or you find a way to do something different.

Attorney Defends Women’s Right To Good Content

What It’s About

Frustrated with superficial offerings, this woman takes content for women to the next level.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

To market, Ashley took key aspects, or demographics, from her audience and targeted these groups. She knew that she had a small audience and wanted to grow it quickly, so she jumped right into using paid posts to spread the word.

This is why it’s so important to narrow down your target audience instead of promoting your side hustle to a more general audience.

Fun Fact

Part of what makes Harness Magazine so unique is the fact that it features real stories from real women. She features a large number of readers and female movers and shakers that her readers can learn from. One of Ashley’s contributors cried when she saw her work has been published in Harness Magazine. This really gave Ashley the feeling she was doing worthwhile work!

Notes from Chris

Episode 616

Ashley Rector was frustrated with the media. Over the last few years she’d noticed a discouraging pattern. Every radio show, magazine or TV segment targeted at women was focused on the same issues; the latest hairstyles, celebrity gossip and fad diets.

There was little of substance. Little that was honest. Little that showed a real glimpse of life—her life—as a modern woman. She didn’t care about Hollywood home-wreckers or hot new heels. And, as it turned out, neither did her other female friends.

The more people Ashley spoke about this issue to the women she knew, both in her professional life as an attorney and her personal life, the more she got the same answers. They were looking for authentic stories which represented their lives as women in the 21st century.

To try and find these stories, Ashley turned her attention online. She looked for little-known magazines which spoke about the issues she cared about, but couldn’t find anything reliable. The odd blog here and there, maybe an article or two, but none of them felt quite right.

Ashley was disappointed by not defeated. If the magazine she wanted didn’t exist, why not create it herself? That way she could create and control the stories she published and ensure they spoke about the topics she cared about.

So, Ashley set to work on creating the magazine. She called it Harness Magazine, which came from the mission statement she wrote, which was to “harness” the voices, ideas, and stories of real women around the world.

Ashley decided the magazine would be split into two formats.

The first would an online publication. Here she would share articles and ideas which were submitted from women around the world. These stories would help to build an audience and build an online brand around her mission.

The second would be a print magazine. Here she would share what she refers to as the “pure essence” of the online version. It would be the best and most relevant stories from the women who wrote for her, with additional and bonus content women couldn’t find online.

As the online presence of Harness began to grow, it attracted advertisers. It wasn’t long before she was earning at least $300-$500 a month from sponsored posts.

The magazine makes money from these wholesale orders and advertising placement, as well as a subscription model Ashley has created on the Harness website. Issue 1 brought in just $400, but by the time issue II was ready for print, she’d scored a $5,000 wholesale order and other orders that added up to more than $21,000.

Looking to the future, Ashley wants to continue to grow the print version of the magazine. She’s on a mission to harness the power of real women’s stories… and she wants to build it in a sustainable way.

MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:

  • Harness Magazine: If you find that you’re looking for more than celebrity breakups and high heels, head on over to Ashley’s website!
  • MailChimp: The email marketing platform that Ashley used to connect with those who were interested in Harness Magazine

No doubt people are now finding that remote work not only offers more freedom but also makes you more efficient since you save time traveling to your office. If your current job doesn’t offer the chance to work remotely, consider starting your own side hustle.

Notes from Chris

Episode 615

When Sireesha Narumanshi first started looking online for remote work opportunities ten years ago, she found herself at a total loss. The concept of remote work was still in its infancy, and such opportunities were scarce. The few opportunities she could find produced more questions than answers. Was it legitimate? Did it pay well? What was the next step? These were some of the questions that Sireesha had to wrap her head around.

Nevertheless, she kept searching. With two young daughters, Sireesha believed that this was the best way she could spend time with her family while earning a living. Her patience and persistence paid off as she eventually found a job that was suitable for her. But not everyone is as fortunate. Several people she knew quit searching for remote job opportunities, abandoning the idea forever after encountering the obstacles.

Over the next couple of years, Sireesha noticed that interest in remote work opportunities grew substantially. More people were looking for a career where they wouldn’t be bound to their desk from 9-to-5, even if they wanted to continue working for a company. By now she’d gained a lot of experience and had the potential to save others hours of frustration.

Apprehensive and excited at the same time, Sireesha launched Crowd Work News in 2016.

The first step was to conduct research to determine what was missing in the remote workspace. This gave her ideas for content that would appeal to her audience. For instance, she knew that those new to remote work wanted ideas on the type of services they could offer to companies. Remembering that she struggled with determining the legitimacy of jobs when she first started out, Sireesha also started linking out to trusted platforms where many of these jobs could be found.

Although many job seekers felt that there was a lack of resources in the remote space, it wasn’t the case that there were no sites catering to this demand. A lot of sites had sprung up to accommodate this interest, just like Crowd Work News had. But as Sireesha says, you can always make it work if you come at things from a unique angle even if the market may look saturated from the outside.

These days she’s earning over $2,000/month from affiliate marketing and another $1,000/month from display advertising. Her only cost is the $10/month she pays to host the site.

According to Sireesha, the best part of this is that it’s all passive. She could take a week off, never touch the site, and still make money. Moving forward, she hopes to make the transition to a travel photographer. She’ll no longer just be creating remote work opportunities, but going to remote places to see them for herself.

Weekly Recap: Bees, Children’s Books, & Granola Butter

Notes from Chris

Episode 603

THEMES & TAKEAWAYS:

From children’s books about real-life to a buzzworthy six-figure beekeeping biz to a Frenchman who says Bonjour to $35,000/month in foodie sales—this week has been full of adventure and lessons!

We also celebrated crossing the rubicon of Ep. 600! Julius Caesar was once told by the Roman senate to disband his army and return to Rome—and most important of all, do not cross the Rubicon river to make a 600th podcast episode.

In other news, Labor Day is right around the corner, and we’re going to reimage, reinvent that concept by calling it “Happier Labor Day” (#happierlaborday). This project is the invention of Gretchen Rubin, who I have mentioned many times on the show. She is a great friend and mentor to me, and Side Hustle School is part of her Onward Project imprint.

In an upcoming episode of her popular podcast, Happier with Gretchen Rubin, she’s going to talk a bit more about this Happier Labor Day concept. In this episode, she’ll be sharing some great tips with her listeners, so make sure to tune in!

If you’re interested in learning more about Happier Labor Day, check out today’s Weekly Recap and head on over to Gretchen’s podcast page!

Weekly Recap: When to Ignore Good Advice

Notes from Chris

Episode 596

THEMES & TAKEAWAYS:

This week, one of our featured stories (Ep. 592) said something particularly notable. I didn’t include it in the episode itself, but reading through some notes later I noticed this quote:

“Advice from customers is great, but take it with a grain of salt and not as an absolute truth. What they want and what they will buy are two very different things.”

This is true. As important as it is to listen to your customers, you shouldn’t let them dictate your next moves. You also shouldn’t listen to people when they tell you that your idea is silly, or that it just won’t work.

Listen to today’s Weekly Recap to learn more why being told “you can’t do this” is highly motivational, and why it always seems impossible until it’s done.

This is a new segment we’re trying out with the help of side hustlers that we’ve featured in the past. Today, we have an update from Julie Wilder, who was featured very early in the show on Ep. 6.

Agricultural Teacher Earns $200,000 Selling Lesson Plans

What It’s About

An agriculture teacher grows and nurtures a six-figure side income using a niche market.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

This project serves a very specific group of people. While some find marketing to a small group of people limiting, Alicia credits it for her success. One Less Thing had very little competition and came up at the top of searches when people were looking for agricultural education materials. Plus, she could rely on people learning about her products by word of mouth, since the community was so tight-knit.

Fun Fact

At one point, Alicia and Brian decided that both of them would work for the business. Only 6 months after that, however, the worst economic downfall since the recession hit. They didn’t have a steady paycheck or benefits. The two learned that if they were both going to work for the business, they should act like they already were only living off the business before the other spouse quit their job. If they couldn’t survive without dipping into the other spouse’s paycheck, they weren’t ready yet.

Notes from Chris

Episode 592
In 2006, Alicia Tomlinson had just become a parent. She and her husband Brian were thrilled at the arrival of their firstborn, but Alicia quickly realized that her long work days as an agricultural education teacher just wouldn’t work, at least not for a while. She decided that she wasn’t going to come back for the next school year and instead would focus completely on being a full-time mom. This, at the time, seemed like a much-needed break.

That “break” was over before it began. As soon as her fellow teachers found out she was leaving the school system for good, they began asking her about making course materials for them. Alicia wasn’t sure about taking on the extra work but agreed to at least show her friends the materials she had on hand. They were amazed. They couldn’t stop talking about how much time they’d save if they had these materials.

Naturally, Alicia was stunned! She knew that there were very few resources for agricultural education teachers, but had no idea that her personal materials would be so attractive to her peers.

That’s when she got to thinking—what could she do if she really devoted time and effort into creating a product and sold it? After all, she was already well versed in all kinds of agricultural subjects, from forestry to veterinary science to meat science to parliamentary procedure. Plus, she knew what teachers wanted, since, well, she was one. After some deliberation, Alicia decided she would try it out—much to the delight of her friends in the industry.

As Alicia continued to learn about what this side hustle would take to produce, she realized how few materials were necessary to start making products. She already owned a computer and had recently been gifted a printer. All she needed was a pouch laminator. It cost $500—not a small amount of money per se—but it was the only thing she had to buy. Not bad for overall start-up costs!

With her business tools assembled, Alicia began to create her first products. She started with two products almost every kind of agricultural education teacher could use. The first was a review game all about the Future Farmers of America, or FFA. She decided to price the game at $50. The second product was a series of “icebreakers” for teachers to use at the beginning of the school year to help the students get to know one another.

Alicia knew that teachers could create products like this themselves, but that wasn’t the point. The point was that they no longer would have to, which Alicia knew would be attractive.

She began making other class materials and eventually expanded into study cards for something called Career Development Events. At these events, students have to identify all kinds of things from slices of meat to species of plants and animals, to types of industry equipment. It was unrealistic for teachers to have examples of all of those things on hand, and they were often forced to create their own study cards. Alicia decided that she was going to do it for them.

That was the product that really put her business, now called One Less Thing, on the market. Teachers were telling one another all about Alicia’s products, and word traveled quickly in the tight-knit group. Plus, Alicia was speaking at agriculture education conferences and getting a ton of exposure there. After the cows were put out to pasture, Alicia made $35,000 in revenue that year!

One Less Thing has now grown to become more than just a side hustle, and she now produces lesson plans in addition to the other products. Altogether, it pulls in about $200,000 a year, giving both Alicia and her husband the opportunity to work on it full-time. They can support their now family of five with the side hustle Alicia happened to give a chance a few years ago.

Alicia still can’t believe that she gets to do what she does as a job. She loves being able to attend every event her kids have and to be able to eat lunch with her husband every day. She’ll keep putting out her ag-ed resources until the cows come home.
