Scientist Starts a Purrfect Cats-Only Pet-Sitting Service

What It’s About

A Houston woman finds a purr-fect side hustle in an underserved market.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

There are a lot of places that watch dogs, but there aren’t that many that are catered specifically to cats. It’s smart that they chose to take on cats only! I sometimes mention the Meow Haus in Portland, where the official show cat, Libby, goes to stay when her parents are gone. Peace of mind as an animal owner or companion is important, and cat sitters are a terribly underserved market in many cities.

Fun Fact

Nicole has had side hustles since she was little: lemonade stands, community newsletters, even an NSYNC fansite selling products for a profit. She’d find ways to make money and donate her profits to animal charities.

Notes from Chris

Episode 342

Today’s story comes from Nicole Kay. By day, she’s an environmental scientist at an oil and gas company. For her side hustle, she started an in-home cats-only pet sitting business in the dog-prominent town of Houston.

Nicole and her partner have five cats and had only gone on vacation once or twice in the five years they were together—they never wanted to leave town because they didn’t trust anyone to take care of their cats. One night, Nicole thought, “What if WE became the pet sitters?”

A cats-only pet sitting company didn’t exist in Houston, so she started one over a weekend by creating a free website on Wix and putting a post on Nextdoor:, a private social networking service for neighborhoods. She also spent a couple of hours putting flyers around her neighborhood, but never got a response from them.

The Nextdoor post didn’t get any comments or likes, but it did get her a customer a few days later. From there, people reached out after hearing about the business from Nextdoor or from word of mouth from clients, local shelters, and cat veterinarians. She went from having 0 to 40 clients in six months with just word of mouth from the community: purr-fect. Their website started generating leads about three months later from Google and from blog posts that appeared on page one of Google search results for “cat sitting Houston,” which was pretty meow-nificent.

The business grew from there. Nicole would see two to four clients a week, and each client had between one and three cats. She charged $25 for a half hour visit and offered 15-minute and 60-minute visits as well, which were not as popular. She’d also charge a few more dollars during the busy season.

She was averaging between $1,500 and $2,000 a month by only seeing several clients a week—which she says really helped with their mortgage payments! They ended up selling their client list to a competitor when they moved to Denver, and they’re considering launching a new cat-sitting business in Colorado. In the meantime, it’s all cats all the time with their new online pet store and blog, Just Cats, and we’ll have to see what they manage to claw up next!

"I started this side hustle because I was frustrated and unchallenged in my full-time job. Letters-from-Santa Hustles Down Chimney

What It’s About

Personalized letters from Santa jingle all the way to a D.C. woman’s bank account!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

After initially launching her letters from Santa service, Bry noticed that she wasn’t receiving much traction, so she reevaluated her service and made a couple changes. The first was personalization. She would learn key things about a child from a list of questions and personalize the letter, making sure they knew Santa was watching and that he was proud of them (most of them). The parents also got to approve the letters, which was a huge comfort for them (they didn’t want to be on the hook for something “Santa” promised).

But here’s the winning element: Bry started to advertise that these deluxe letters included reindeer food. What parent who loved Christmas didn’t want to watch their child leave out magic reindeer food on Christmas Eve? This was apparently the Santa letter jackpot!

Fun Fact

I often ask people what the greatest thing about their hustle is, and Bry had an interesting answer. She said:

“That’s easy. A side hustle gives you extra purpose. I love focusing my extra energy on something I built from the ground up. I love when my work makes others happy. I get hundreds of emails from parents each year with pictures of their children, beaming with their Letters from Santa and baggies of reindeer food. It’s fulfilling to know that the work you have complete ownership of it means something to people.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself!

Notes from Chris

Episode 338

Santa Claus might sit around and get fat 11 months of the year, but come December, this jolly old man becomes overwhelmed. Even in our hyper-connected world, where there is so much interest in Santa (seriously, his social media is blowing up) a lot of people still communicate with Santa using an old-school social network called letter-writing.

For the millennials and Gen-Z listeners out there, I should probably explain a little—people used to actually hand-write on pieces of paper and then put them in the mailbox, not the outbox where you click “send,” but an actual envelope. And then they used Stamps.com to send that envelope off to other people, who would receive it at the glacially slow pace of several days later. And in fact, when it comes to writing to Santa, some people still use this antiquated system.

That’s where our story comes in—I was recently informed that one of his assistants is a fan of the show.

Right out of college, Bry Larrea spent all of her savings on a four-month backpacking trip. Upon her return, she got a job as a waitress in Yakima, Washington while her boyfriend at the time worked on a campaign. She was only working part-time though, so she didn’t have a lot of money. But more importantly, she was so bored. She knew she wanted to start a side gig, but what?

She sat down and asked herself: “what am I good at?” She knew she was a fairly strong writer, but what could she sell that included her writing? And furthermore, what would people actually pay money for? She didn’t have time to write a book. She had already tried her hand at writing resumes… that didn’t go very well. What could she do?

She’s not completely sure how the idea showed up, but she started advertising handwritten Santa letters through her service, Letters from Santa.

The first year, she sold around 300 letters at $9.95 each or a deluxe package at $11.95. The letters cost her about $1.50 each to write and package, so she made around $4,000.

The second year (2015), she sold about 400 and raised the prices slightly (to $11.95 and $13.95). However, she outsourced the writing of the letters using Upwork.com, so her profit margin was slightly less. This time they cost about $3 to write and package.

Last year, something interesting happened. After first thinking she wouldn’t do it again—because even with the outsourcing, it was a lot of work—she finally decided to go for it, but started late and did very little marketing. However, here’s the surprise: she raised her prices to $19.95 and $26.95, so in doing less work, she actually made a lot more money. By selling 250 letters she made just under $6,000. This is all less than a month’s part-time work; she begins the process around Nov. 15 and letters are sent by Dec. 5-10.

Ho, ho, ho, and congratulations, Bry, on such an awesome capitalist Christmas project!

Cannabis Cookies Make a Sweet, Soothing Side Hustle

What It’s About

High snacks lead to high profits!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Remember—when new industries emerge there are also a lot of opportunities around the edges or margins of that industry. For instance, in Ep. 82 we take a look at a bartender who ends up capitalizing on the Colorado’s legalization of marijuana by creating a guide all about it. When something like this develops, whether cannabis or something entirely different—bubble tea, fidget spinners, whatever—there’s more than one way to make money from it.

Fun Fact

Gobbling euphoric substances isn’t just a modern movement. Sweetening a drink with bhang, a ground cannabis paste blended with ghee and other delights made for a soothing sip in ancient India. Middle Eastern cultures have long known the pleasures of eating (as well as smoking) pot and its derivatives, like hashish. But chewers of Alice B. Toklas’ “haschich fudge” of the 1960s couldn’t have imagined the range of THC-laced edibles today, which include gummy candies, lip balm, chocolate, coffee, and soda. You can check out various cannabis cookbooks today and roll your own!

Notes from Chris

Episode 336

It may seem an unlikely journey to go from working in product development to a dog-walking business to selling homemade jewelry—and then to her latest hustle selling pot-laced consumables, but Jill Trinchero has taken practical cues from her entire career journey and integrated them into this latest endeavor.

That endeavor is her She Don’t Know company, which makes premium, gluten-free cannabis edibles sold through Oregon’s legal medical-cannabis market. Jill’s initial foray into medical pot was prompted by the anxiety she suffered after the births of her daughters. She experimented with marijuana butter infusions and pot cookies to find a low dosage that was calming, yet allowed her to keep her wits about her.

Those experiments led to broader ambitions with her “get-baked” bakings: she moved from selling home-baked goods to medical dispensaries to a full state processing and sales license out of a commercial kitchen for the recreational market. We won’t get into this part here, but she also has a side-side hustle of subleasing the kitchen to five other tenants who also sell in the edibles market.

All of Jill’s products are handmade, weighed to ensure the proper dose of 5mg of THC, which the governing body, the Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC) has determined to be the standard serving size. But proper measurements don’t mean she can’t have fun with her product names, which include Tokeless B. Coconut and Bernie’s Kind Biscuit.

These biscuits do have some costs: her start-up costs were around 30K for the edibles side, which includes licensing ($250 application fee and $4,750 for the license itself) and materials, and 75K for the commercial kitchen setup. She’s now making $7–10K a month from kitchen and edibles revenue and is looking to reinvest in some automation systems to increase efficiency.

"Heading out without a business plan and direction is probably the biggest mistake one can make. People get excited because it’s cannabis and don’t think the business through before they start. Florida Woman Gets Paid to Remove Poisonous Frogs

What It’s About

Poisonous frogs. In your neighborhood. Who you gonna call? Toad Busters!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

There are a lot of opportunities out there to fill a need that others would not be overly eager to take on. If something makes others squeamish but doesn’t have a similar effect on you, hop to it!

Fun Fact

Jeannine didn’t have much time to celebrate her first sale, so she settled for a stop at McDonald’s on the way back from her first evening of work!

Notes from Chris

Episode 332

If something “ribbits” in your neighborhood, who you gonna call? Toad Busters! Or, more specifically, Jeannine Tilford, the owner of today’s side hustle. After spotting a dangerous shift in her local environment, this high school science teacher decided to take matters into her own hands, and earn an extra $3,000 a month because of it.

A high school science teacher and herpetologist by trade, Jeannine had noticed a long, slow change in the native ecosystem of her local Florida area. The diversity of the local reptiles—animals she loved to collect and study—had begun to dwindle, and the rate of dogs dying from eating poisonous toads was on the rise. All thanks to one particular species, the Bufo toad.

The system of getting rid of these toads was effective but expensive and damaging to the flora and fauna that was subjected to the pesticides. There was no way to get rid of the toads without making the rest of the area sterile. Unless, well… someone went out each night to collect the toads and remove them one by one.

This what where Jeannine found her side-hustle calling. She felt that if she could be the one to go out and collect the toads, it would be the perfect part-time evening job to boost her low teacher’s salary, and a way to scratch her herpetological itch.

The job itself comes with a lot of perils. It’s an active job and requires climbing into areas where there are plenty of mosquitoes, spiders, venomous snakes, poltergeists, and alligators. There’s also a lot of explaining to do to the police about why you’re walking around someone’s property, at night, with just a flashlight and a big stick.

Last but not least: she has to remember “don’t cross the streams!” But, despite those perils, Toad Busters is averaging around $3,000 per month.

  • Toad Busters: Hop on over to Jeannine’s website to learn more. They ain’t afraid of no toads!

Environmentalist Couple Sells Online Courses in Beekeeping

What It’s About

Niche online courses that help people live more organic lives.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

There are still plenty of niche industries that are relatively underdeveloped online, so if strong competition gives you pause, look for markets with a minimal online presence and make yourself an authority there. And if you’re not sure where to start, go to Amazon and look for niches and books that have lots of comments and a following that lack decent online courses in those topics online.

Fun Fact

Organic Life Guru allowed Chris and Samantha to spend an entire winter in Costa Rica so that they could collaborate with an instructor in the rainforest and create a really big course for their site.

Notes from Chris

Episode 328

Today’s story comes from Chris Badgett in Belfast, Maine. By day, Chris is the CEO at LifterLMS, a WordPress plugin for online courses. (This was originally a side hustle before it became his full-time job.) His new side hustle is Organic Life Guru, a website offering online courses in organic gardening and permaculture from the world’s top organic growing experts. He wanted to do something that that aligned with his values and liked the idea of starting a membership site.

Chris has a degree in sustainable development and describes himself as an environmentalist. He runs this hustle with his wife, Samantha, an organic farmer. Chris works on the website and the marketing, and Samantha is responsible for course content, instructor relationships, and customer support.

OLG offers courses in topics ranging from beekeeping, permaculture design, organic gardening, food forest design for cities and suburbs, organic soil building for backyard gardening, how to grow a medicinal food forest, and more. The nine courses range in cost from $20 to $225 and offer anywhere from two hours of content to about 20 hours of content.

The profit is roughly $1,000 to $3,000 per month, and the sales volume fluctuates based on whether or not they’re doing a promotion or new course launch. A launch brings higher income, but also more work. They’re able to structure their side hustle life around what’s happening with the rest of their life.

For them, it’s the best of both worlds, and it also aligns with those values of teaching people about the earth.

  • Organic Life Guru: Take a page out of the books from some of the world’s leading organic growth experts when you check out Chris and Samantha’s online courses
  • Screenflow, iMovie, & Final Cut Pro: Three of the programs that Chris and Samantha used to edit the videos for their courses

Itchy Honeymoon Shaves Way To $100k Pubic Oil Income

What It’s About

Three friends decide to stop beating around the bush and launch their own pubic oil skincare line.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Through feedback, David realized that the $25 price tag for the full-size bottle was too high for many people who were skeptical of the new oil category, so they launched the sampler package: three scents, 2ml each, for $10. Included in this sampler is a discount on the next purchase.

They needed a less expensive way to get product into the hands of customers, and while the team lost a couple of dollars with the sample pack, David said that it’s been an effective way to acquire customers who return a few weeks later for larger orders.

Fun Fact

Bushbalm was bootstrapped by three friends who all invested just $250 each in the beginning. They’ve grown the business solely by reinvesting profits, rather than raising any money.

Notes from Chris

Episode 326

David Gaylord was traveling with a good friend in Canada when the side hustle of this story was born. His friend, who had recently returned from his honeymoon, was excited about a personal discovery and just had to share it with David. He had been using beard oil in his pubic region, and the best part was that it was working wonders.

Now, before you cringe, remember the benefits of beard oil on your face.

  • – It reduces irritation and redness after shaving.
  • – It sooths the often sensitive or dry skin and gives it nutrients.
  • – It reduces the risk of ingrown hairs.
  • – Not to mention, it makes you smell nice.

These discomforts don’t just apply to faces—they exist in the pubic area as well. The thing is, nobody talks about these issues (except on this show apparently) because they have to do with a more private area of the body.

After dispelling the weird feelings that came with the news, David caught on to the opportunity.

But for David and his friend, this was all the more reason to turn the idea into a business. No talking meant translated to just about no competition. And to be among the first in the pubic oil space, they had no time to beat around the bush.

David and his friend returned to Ottawa and brought on a third friend. The trio began researching oils, nutrition, and essential oils. The beard oils worked alright, but they knew they could refine the recipes to be even more suited for the pubic region, and of course to be relevant for both men and women.

Each of the three partners threw in $250, which covered the bill for the Shopify store, packaging and bottles, and 100 bottles worth of oil. Finally, by the passion of three individuals with no outside support, Bushbalm officially launched.

Things started off very slow. A sale here. A sale there. They didn’t invest a single dollar into advertising, relying only on word of mouth.

What started as an exciting, yet odd side hustle has grown into a near-$100k per year business in under two years. As it turns out, there was treasure hidden in the bush all along.

Lurk around and see what is successful on subreddits relative to your product or artwork (trust me, there are TONS) and get a feel for what makes a post successful (e.g. – how they are titled, the day of the week and time they are published in, is there a cat tax, etc.). After all, knowledge is power!

Fun Fact

Soren was featured on Kotaku and a few other gaming blogs a few years ago simply due to the success of her Reddit post. A friend even messaged her after seeing the cards on a blog—Soren didn’t even know it was there!

Notes from Chris

Episode 325

Today’s story comes from Soren Kalla in San Francisco. By day, she’s a software engineer at a startup. Her side hustle is designing and selling custom playing cards online and at conventions. She’s got a Legend of Zelda-themed deck, a Star Wars themed deck, and a Sailor Moon-themed deck.

Soren got the idea after a friend of hers bought her a Legend of Zelda concept art book for her birthday. She decided she’d make her friend a Zelda-themed thank you gift. This friend always had a deck of cards on him, so she decided to draw Link from the Legend of Zelda in the format of a playing card. Once she was done, she posted the image she’d drawn on Reddit, in the /r/gaming subreddit), and was surprised by the response. People loved the design and kept asking when she’d finish the full deck and whether she’d sell it to them. So that’s what she decided to do.

She spent some time looking for the best way to print the cards, and ultimately settled on printerstudio.com. They let her upload custom images for the front and back of each card, as well as the box the cards are later packaged in.

She spent some time looking for the best way to print the cards, and ultimately settled on printerstudio.com. They let her upload custom images for the front and back of each card, as well as the box the cards are later packaged in. She uploaded her artwork, gets it printed in batches of about 500 decks, and then waits for them to come in the mail.

When she first started selling cards, she made around $20,000 a year, but now that she devotes less time to it, it’s about $8,000 to $10,000. She makes around $10 per deck and has sold 6,432 decks to date. That adds up to $64,000 in nerdy playing cards.

The $300,000 Bouncy Castle Hustle—With No Inventory!

What It’s About

A Texas man starts a dropshipping side hustle and bounces all the way to the bank. [podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Amazon FBA, stock trading, dropshipping high ticket items, and reselling items on eBay were among Rene’s top ideas when he was getting started, but ultimately, he decided on dropshipping for a couple reasons with the chief reason being the low barrier of entry. Dropshipping is a fantastic model because he didn’t have to invest in producing or purchasing inventory and didn’t have to carry inventory or ship the product.

Plus his success wasn’t dependent on external factors out of his control, as is the case with some of the options he was considering, like the stock market or real estate.

Fun Fact

Rene’s first sale came while traveling for work. He had just installed the Shopify app on his phone so he could monitor things. Suddenly, in the middle of a meeting, this loud “cha-ching” sounds from his pocket.

Having never heard that noise yet, he casually pulled out his phone to take a look. To his surprise, it was his very first sale!

Notes from Chris

Episode 324

During the day, Rene Delgado works in operations and supply chain management for a large consumer electronics company. In the evenings, he runs an eCommerce site dedicated to selling bounce houses to residential and commercial customers. Yep, that’s right—bounce houses. Rene didn’t decide to sell bounce houses because he harbors a secret passion for them. He decided to sell bounce houses after some very careful analysis and consideration of his best options.

That careful consideration began in August 2016, when he started considering his side hustle options. Amazon FBA, stock trading, dropshipping high ticket items, and reselling items on eBay were among his top ideas, but ultimately he decided on dropshipping.

To land on a winning idea, he made a list of over 100 product options and then narrowed the list based on the following criteria: the products were hard to locate in a brick and mortar store, the average price point was over $400, there were more than 5 manufacturers or suppliers, the ad spend on the PPC was below $2, and the level of competition in the space was low. These comprehensive criteria ultimately lead him to settle on bounce houses.

Once he had the legal framework in place, he bought a relevant domain—BounceHouseStore.com was luckily available—for less than $20/year and then filed his DBA with his local county. Rene officially launched the website in December 2016, once he had products from multiple manufacturers up. The first three months of the year, Rene brought in almost no revenue because it was simply too cold (winter is apparently a low-bounce season).

But by April things start to pick up for summer, with a peak in June. And then by September, as the leaves begin to fall, the bounce goes out of people’s lives…sales drop off again. But looking at sales on a yearly basis tells a much different story. So far in 2017, Rene has had just over $300k in sales!

MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:

  • The Bounce House Store: Bounce on over to Rene’s website and pick up a bouncy castle for your next Frozen themed birthday party!
  • Shopify: Rene used Shopify to set up his store for The Bounce House Store, and they’re offering a 21-day trial and exclusive discount for all Side Hustle School listeners!
  • QuickSpark Financial: The business that helped Rene increase sales and provide financing to his business customers
  • Dropship Lifestyle: An online drop ship course that taught Rene the basics of the business

From Landscaper to Podcast Producer Earning $4k/Month

What It’s About

A podcast production side hustle that earns more than a landscaper’s day job.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

In addition to cold emailing podcasts to see if they were looking for a producer, Jeremy was also applying for jobs on UpWork.com and managed to land his first client within a week of coming up with his side hustle idea. This immediate validation was just the boost he needed to really pursue it.

If you need to validate your idea, try using a starter website similar to Upwork. It’s low-risk and well worth it if it gives you the validation you need to move forward!

Fun Fact

At this point, Jeremy’s side hustle is completely location independent. In fact, he spent two weeks running his business from his bicycle while he toured the UK and another two weeks on foot while he walked the Camino de Santiago in Portugal and Spain.

Notes from Chris

Episode 319

Back in early 2016 Jeremy Enns was working at a landscaping job in Vancouver that he knew he didn’t want to do forever, which is why he wanted to start some sort of side hustle. When it came time to decide what that side hustle would be, it was actually a pretty easy decision.

You see Jeremy is obsessed with podcasts. He listens to 50+ hours a week at 2x speed so he can get through so many. In addition to his love of podcasts, he also has the necessary skills to edit and produce podcasts since he went to school for audio engineering and production. As he started thinking about doing podcast editing and production as side hustle, he realize that there was also a huge potential audience for these services.

He had hit the trifecta: passion, skill, and opportunity.

After validating his idea using UpWork, he continued landing clients and realized that not only did this idea have merit but he needed to update his website to reflect this new focus. His existing site was aimed at musicians looking to record albums. So he slowly started updating and tweaking the website himself.

With some minor changes and no additional marketing, Jeremy continued to get clients via word of mouth and UpWork. Good shift!

At the beginning of August 2016, about four months into this hustle, Jeremy started thinking about turning this into his full-time focus. At the end of August, a couple weeks after he gave his notice, he finally added up all of the revenue streams he was getting through his clients and realized that he had made more money that month on his side hustle than his day job.

That was the moment he knew he had made the right decision. Within a couple months of quitting his day job he was bringing in an average of $4k per month.

Fulbright Scholar Earns $2k/Month Selling CBD Oil

What It’s About

A student builds a hempire educating others about the benefits and uses of hemp and CBD oil.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Annie says that while not everyone is as obsessed with hemp as she is, she still thinks that her path and lessons can benefit everyone:

“Every job can be of benefit to you even if it’s not directly applicable to your passion. Giving out free beer helped me become better at small talk and feel comfortable approaching strangers.”

Fun Fact

Without a doubt, any time Annie does in-person educational outreach she gets a comment about how she could smoke her hemp shirt or get high off the CBD supplements—both of which are horribly misguided. Not one to be deterred, she looks at it as another opportunity for education!

Notes from Chris

Episode 315

While it’s only been the last couple years that Annie Rouse has launched her hemp side hustle, it’s been a long time coming. When she was growing up in Kentucky, her dad was the videographer who filmed a publicity stunt that actor Woody Harrelson orchestrated back in 1996.

Harrelson planted 4 hemp seeds in an attempt to draw attention to the fact that industrial hemp and marijuana were still controlled under the same law. He was arrested, and ultimately acquitted during a one-day jury trial.

This event left a lasting impression on Annie. She wrote about the event in college and also started researching Harry Anslinger—the 1st Commissioner of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics from 1930 to 1962—who in his war against marijuana didn’t differentiate between the psychoactive drug and the non-psychoactive industrial hemp plant.

When she learned about this bit of history, Annie immediately wanted to educate the general public about how industrial hemp has been incorrectly grouped with marijuana. She’s been educating on the individual level ever since, but in the back of her mind, she’s always had the idea that she needed to share this story with a larger audience.

During her studies, she started a simple WordPress site called Think Hempy Thoughts, where she chronicled what she was learning. It very quickly became an outlet for her philosophy of living consciously and sustainably.

Not long after, Annie was diagnosed with Lyme disease. Since CBD is great at reducing inflammation she pretty quickly saw positive results in her symptoms. When she ran out of that brand, she tried a different one and wasn’t reaping the same benefits. She ended up trying over a dozen different brands of CBD and realizing how inconsistent the results were since there were no standards in the industry.

With this personal insight, Annie made some tweaks to the verification system, narrowing her focus to just CBD and very shortly after got her first certification client. Her verification system gives brands a third-party seal of approval that communicates to consumers that the CBD is high quality and uncontaminated. With verified products to sell, Annie set up and launched her online marketplace in the beginning of 2017, using Shopify. After only a couple months she was selling over a thousand dollars in products a month. By mid-year, she was bringing in $2k – $3k per month in revenue.

With steady income coming in from her marketplace hustle on Think Hempy Thoughts, Annie can fulfill her dream of educating people about hemp via her new podcast and nonprofit and can continue to expand her hempire and influence on the industry.
