Q&A: How to approach someone about a partnership opportunity?

What It’s About

Today’s listener seeks advice on how to swipe left with a potential business partner.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1738

Today’s listener has an interesting challenge: he wants to reach out to a company he bought a product from and offer to partner with them. But he’s worried about the right process for doing so. If you spot an opportunity, how can you reach out in the right way?

Good news here: it’s not that hard. Or at least it’s not hard to avoid making some simple mistakes by putting a small amount of effort into it.

Also, I love that his “day job” is selling on eBay and his side hustle is in fulfillment—he’ll tell you more.

“Hi, this is Andrew Hyam from Denton, Texas, and I’ve been listening to the show since early in the first year, my day job is selling on eBay and Amazon and my Side hustle is offering 3FL fulfillment services for smaller ecommerce and local businesses as value cube industries. So I have a few fulfillment customers currently and I’m always looking for more. I recently discovered a company selling a product that aligns with some of my passions about ecology, saving the earth and all that. I went to purchase it and try it out. The product works great and I plan to order more when I run out. But here’s the thing. It ships from Canada and I’m in the US. I paid ten US dollars for the product and I learned from a Canadian reseller, Friends, that the company probably paid 10 Canadian dollars just to ship it to me. This means they basically made no money on the transaction. So of course I want to help this company sell more and get their shipments out quicker and cheaper. The problem is I’m not a natural sales person. I contacted the company through their Facebook page and they have a customer service rep who says she passed my information on I’ve done research on the company and its key employees and found their pages on LinkedIn. Two of them only allow followers, but one employee is wide open. So here’s my question. What’s my line here? I don’t want to piss off a potential client, but I really want their business and we would be perfect for them for so many reasons. How can I approach this company in a way that I can actually get the business without coming off rude, unprofessional or like some sort of stalker?”

Crafter Fashions Upcycled Chairs Into Six-Figure Shop

What It’s About

Sit down for the story about reupholstered chairs that bring in over 6-figures.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Wendy shares some excellent pricing advice. “Come up with a good pricing system. When we price our things really low people question what’s wrong with it and decide it must not be that valuable. But when you go ahead and you price it high … you believe that this is worth that amount because of the time and energy that you have to put into it.”

Fun Fact

Fifteen years ago, Wendy taught a Detective 101 online course for elementary school kids. She sent them a box of clues to use for each weeks’ assignments.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1737
In 2012, Wendy Conklin was working as an educational consultant when she took a couple of upholstery classes. She’d already tried doing it using instructions from a book but wanted hands-on guidance from a pro.

In the first class, she learned how to fix up vintage and antique chairs and reupholster them with new fabric. Toward the end of the second class, she decided to open an Etsy shop to see if the chairs she’d worked on would sell.

Starting up didn’t cost a lot of money. Wendy sourced her chairs from Craigslist and was conscious of choosing affordable yet beautiful fabric. Within two weeks of opening ChairWhimsy, she got her first order.

During year one, she made about $500 a month in her Etsy shop. Not a bad start, but how about now? Well, I hope you’re sitting down… on a chair. Her average monthly profits now are between $10,000-15,000 depending on the season.

Interestingly, some Etsy sellers with high sales volume choose to shut down their Etsy shop and focus on selling through their own website to avoid Etsy fees and own their sales channel. Not Wendy. She has her own website for ChairWhimsy, but sees the value in keeping both going. A lot of customers find her on Etsy and end up buying from her website or vice-versa.

The best part of the process has been the journey of proving to herself that she can figure things out, whether it’s shipping, pricing, or something else. And as a side note, she was fifty years old when she started her side hustle, so she says you’re never too old to learn something new.

ChairWhimsy’s creations have been featured in Better Homes & Gardens, Woman’s World, and BuzzFeed. In addition to selling chairs, Wendy has begun offering online courses. These include upholstery for beginners, how to find swoonworthy fabrics, and what she calls the Business of Chairs.

Q&A: “I’d like to create a cohort-based course like B-School”

What It’s About

Today’s caller seeks advice on how to create a cohort-based online course.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1736

Online courses have come a long way. One of the more popular practices is a cohort-based course, in which the course only opens a couple of times a year, and everyone who takes the course goes through it at the same time—thus the term cohort-based.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of structuring a course this way, both for the students and the course creator? That’s what today’s caller wants to know.

“Hi Chris this is Riley and I’ve been following your projects for a couple of years. What are the advantages (and disadvantages, if any) of offering an online course only during a certain time of year? I notice that some online sellers have their educational courses and other products available for purchase at anytime, whereas some others like Marie Forleo only release theirs once or twice a year? Wouldn’t someone like Marie make more money if students could register whenever was convenient for them? Looking forward to hearing what you have to say. Thanks.”

Failure Friday: Pancake Art in Bangkok Fails to Flip

What It’s About

Flipping pancakes abroad is harder than it looks.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1735

Welcome to a new month! In today’s segment, we’re going to hear from the co-founder of Dancakes, the world’s first pancake art company. We profiled Dancakes for Episode 500 (!) and they’re back today with a strong disaster story.

I believe we can learn as much from failure as we can from success, if not more. It’s with this principle in mind that we’re starting Failure Friday, a collection of short stories all about mistakes, missteps, disasters, and of course, failure.

The stories will vary, but often it starts with an idea, what they thought would happen and what really happened—and of course, what they learned.

I applaud their courage! Let’s hear from Hank about a big disaster in Bangkok, Thailand… I’ll be back at the end to wrap us up.

Listen to today’s episode to learn more…

MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:

  • Thanks to Hank for sharing this transparent and truthful story. Check out Dancakes at DanCakes.com/ (the first name in pancake art) or see some incredible videos of their work on Instagram at @drdancake.

Q&A: Should I become a “miles and points broker”?

What It’s About

Today’s caller wants to resell airline miles. Does this idea have wings?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1733

Is there such a thing as a bad idea? Absolutely! And it’s not always your fault … the way you find good ideas is by having a lot of ideas.

Is this all a setup for a listener question that I might suggest is a bad idea? You are so smart.

This listener’s dad has an extra half a million Frequent Flyer miles sitting around. The surplus has got them both thinking: is there a way they can get paid matching discounted miles with budget flyers?

This is not actually a good idea! I’ll tell you why, and what might be better in my answer.

“My dad has more than half a million Frequent Flier miles that are just sitting in his account. In the past he’s used miles to book trips for family, but he still has plenty. I noticed that there are brokers that will buy his miles and then use them to book trips for strangers. How does this marketplace work? Can anyone sell their miles or points to a broker and make a profit, and how does someone learn to become one of these brokers? I looked through the archives but couldn’t find an example of a story like this.”

“Going Gray” Blog Brings in $6,000/Month

What It’s About

By embracing her natural gray, this aerospace manager is making a lot of extra green.

Words of Wisdom

Katie has important advice for those seeking to start their own blog, “Learn SEO ASAP—it’s more valuable than social media traffic.”

Fun Fact

When your hair begins to turn gray is caused by genetics, and predetermined even before you were born! This means that qualities like premature graying tend to run in families, but most of the time, people start to notice gray hair in their late 30s and 40s.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1732
In 2015, Katie Emery’s world turned upside down. Her husband lost his job, and her son nearly lost his life.

She says that those traumatic events led her to a period of “brain fog.” She didn’t feel like herself, and was constantly stressed.

But she had always loved being creative, and so, facing the uncertainty of her husband’s career, she decided to find her way out by starting a new project. One day around that time, she was listening to the audiobook of “You Are a Badass at Making Money” by Jen Sincero when the book covered the art of getting paid through blogging.

Katie was interested, so she began to learn more about WordPress. Instead of learning on her own, however, she found a WordPress tutor (yes, those exist!) and spent $300 to gain as much competence as she could.

Inspired, she decided to start a new blog, Katie Goes Platinum, to document her journey of going gray and perhaps encourage others along the way. She spent about $100 on the hair necessities—$50 on a blog theme, $15 on a domain name, and $35 for web hosting.

In July of 2018, the blog officially launched with a few posts. In an ideal world, she wanted to wait to launch until she had several in depth, well-written articles, but in the end she decided not to overthink it. Good choice!

Three years in, about 50% of her traffic is organic, and she is hoping to continue to grow that number. Katie makes more than $6,000 a month from her side hustle, and she is still working her day job as an aerospace marketing coordinator.

Katie says that above all else, she’s grateful that her side hustle has eased her family’s financial strain. Living in Los Angeles, the extra income has been critical.

She’s also glad that this is the blog that took off, rather than one of her first two attempts. She hopes it will inspire others in their 50s to think outside the box. Coming up next: a line of e-books, and maybe even a podcast.

Q&A: How do you ‘build your platform’ if you’re selling on Amazon?

What It’s About

Today’s caller wants to grow their business on Amazon. What should their prime directive be?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1731

The Fulfillment by Amazon program is massive. At last count, it had more than two million vendors, the majority of which are small businesses and side hustlers who use Amazon’s platform to reach consumers. There are a lot of benefits to it, and we’ve featured a lot of stories in the archives of listeners just like you who’ve used it to great success.

But what’s the downside? Well, surprisingly, Jeff Bezos does not wake up every day and think, “How can I give away every advantage I have?”

Today’s caller has an important question: if you use FBA, how do you go about building your platform? After all, Amazon controls the entire customer service process and doesn’t even let you know who’s buying.

“Hey Chris this is Carly and I hear a lot about how it’s important to “build your platform” instead of relying on third-party networks, since they can always change the rules or even disappear. But I’m planning to sell on Amazon, which of course has the widest possible distribution and makes a lot of things easy. I like them for that reason, and the whole business model I’m looking at depends on selling with Amazon—but it also seems hard to collect email addresses of customers and market to them on an ongoing basis when Amazon is doing the selling. Is there a way around this? How can I build my platform while selling on the world’s largest marketplace? Thanks for your help.”

7th Grade Teacher Earns 2nd Income Writing Resumes

What It’s About

A teacher finds a profitable extra-curricular activity using his writing skills.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Greg offers some wise advice for those seeking to launch a side hustle, “Make sure your day job is secure first. That’s your bread and butter!”

Fun Fact

Greg likes to keep his business in the family and hired his brother to design his logo.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1730
Greg Marano has had a lifelong obsession with writing. He’d penned his first book before leaving Elementary School. Fast-forward a few decades, and Greg’s dreams of writing had turned out a little differently than expected.

In some ways, he’d acheived them: he was working as a columnist for The Poughkeepsie Journal—his local newspaper—but he found writing for a living left little creative energy to write for fun. He eventually quit his job to explore other things, finally ending up as an English teacher. That was the stable role he stuck with.

While teaching literature and poetry to seventh-graders, he found himself with renewed energy and a desire to write again. With a new baby at home, a little side hustle income also wouldn’t hurt. So, he toyed with the idea of freelance writing.

Greg created a profile on the marketplace UpWork and began offering his services. At first he focused on general writing needs: proofreading, ghostwriting, and blogging, feeling a broad scope would give him the best chance of success. He also set his prices relatively low, a decision he says, in hindsight, was driven more by fear of rejection than trying to undercut the market.

Greg slowly began moving his clients away from UpWork and worked with them directly. This allowed him to cut out the middleman and commission fees to keep more of the income for himself. That was important if he wanted to raise his prices.

Where do the customers come from? Well, Greg generates a consistent stream of leads for his business by using Google’s display ads. After a particularly dry month without much website traffic, he knew he needed to be more active in his approach, so he budgeted $50 to target people searching for keywords around resumes. It was a figure he was willing to lose if it didn’t work out. Thankfully, it generated enough interest to more than cover the cost, and he began to slowly increase the monthly budget until he reached a comfortable workload.

Looking to the future, Greg is happy to stay on his current path. He knows the only way to scale his business would be to hire people, and he can’t imagine himself doing that any time soon. After all, managing a class of seventh graders is enough hard work.

Q&A: What separates a $30 course from a $1,000 course?

What It’s About

Today’s caller seeks clarification on the wide variation of online course pricing.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1729

Some online courses cost $30, others cost $1,000 or more.

What’s the difference between a lower-priced course and a higher-priced one—are the more expensive ones just “better” or is there more to the story?

You could ask this question about a lot of things: what separates a $100,000 car from a $30,000 car, for example. Is the $100k car $70k better? Presumably something is better—it’s not all smoke and mirrors—but there’s also an element of perceived value. This is always true!

“You’ve been sharing a lot of examples of online courses lately, and some of them have been very profitable. You also talked about how the pricing ranges a great deal, from $20-30 all the way to thousands of dollars. What separates a very inexpensive course from a much more premium one? I assume there are a lot of factors and it might not be a simple answer, but wouldn’t it be better for course creators to always aim for the high end—or is the thinking that they’ll sell to more people with an inexpensive price?”
