Q&A: “I want to be the ‘posture guy,’ but how will I make money?”

What It’s About

Today’s caller want to be “that guy.” What does he need to know?

Notes from Chris

Episode 2030

Today’s caller seeks to brand himself as The Posture Guy. Sounds catchy! How can he turn this memorable branding into a steady source of income?

And not just for him, but for others–perhaps you—how can you take a good branding idea and turn into something that actually pays you money? Ideas are everywhere; what matters is execution. But there’s no doubt that the right name gives you a strong head start, so let’s see what we can do here for our caller.

“I’ve heard of The Points Guy and The Science Guy and there are probably some others like that. I’d like to be The Posture Guy. I work as a chiropractor and the first thing I show new clients (and really anyone who will listen) is how to improve their posture. It makes a huge difference, especially for anyone who works at a desk for most of the day.”

Failure Friday: “We had no desire to help college students cheat…”

What It’s About

Do you know what kind of clients you hope to attract?

Notes from Chris

Episode 2029

I believe we can learn as much from failure as we can from success, if not more. It’s with this principle in mind that I offer you a weekly segment called Failure Friday: a collection of short stories all about mistakes, missteps, disasters, and of course, failure.

Just like our Throwback Thursday segment, you’ll hear directly from side hustlers who have struggled to get something off the ground. They’ll tell you a short story of something that went very wrong.

The stories will vary, but often it starts with an idea, what they thought would happen and what really happened—and of course, what they learned.

Today’s short story features Caitlin Rogers, co-founder and chief storyteller of Next Day Animations.

This is a really funny story about messaging and expectations …

Great brand name! Before it was “Next Day Animations,” it was “Next Day” … something else.

Q&A: “Too tired to hustle at the end of the day…”

What It’s About

Today’s caller seeks advice on on how to find extra energy to hustle.

Notes from Chris

Episode 2027

What do you do at the end of your workday? Are you excited to go home and … work some more? This is a tough, yet common problem. You’re burned out or just “spent” from all the other things you do, but you still want to make progress on your side hustle. After all, you know that your side hustle is going to help in the long-term.

Our caller today is feeling overwhelmed with this tough yet common problem.

Let’s give them (and you!) three quick tips to manage the overwhelm.

“Am I the only one who’s constantly tired? Every day I finish work and have zero desire to “work for myself” for the rest of the day. I just want to put my feet up and watch Netflix.

So what’s the problem? Well, I don’t want to be in this job forever! I know I need to invest in myself, like you always say, but how can I do that when I’m constantly tired?”

This Canadian Cleaning Service Earns $2 Million/Year

What It’s About

A lab technician cleans up by becoming the “Starbucks of cleaning services” in Canada.

Words of Wisdom

Ahmed knows that when you’re starting out in business you have to wear many hats, but there comes a time when you need to delegate and hire the right people to join your team even if this cuts into your profits. It’s really a win-win arrangement because these people will help your business scale and reach greater heights than you could achieve on your own.

Fun Fact

Ahmed is onto something. Cleaning is not just dirty work – it brings in lots of money. In the US alone Airbnb estimates that from July 2020 – July 2021 generated over $830 million dollars in income for cleaners. This is during the pandemic with travel demand exploding the following year. [Source]

Notes from Chris

Episode 2026
Ahmed Mezil always wanted to start a business, but felt discouraged because society taught him that businesses had to solve a big world problem. He also heard you needed to have millions of dollars in investment money to make a go of it.

But like so many of our listeners, Ahmed learned that it doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive.

One day in 2017, a friend sent him a Reddit article about earning money through “local services.” You know, things like yard care, tree cutting, and taking away unwanted items. This article contained a 30-day plan he could use to get his first customers.

Ahmed decided to go with cleaning. He figured it was a big market, and almost anybody could be a customer. He chose the name Hellamaid for his business because the domain was available for only $4 on GoDaddy. And it worked. That $4 domain name has helped Ahmed gross over $2 million.

He started cleaning houses on the side during his lunch breaks while balancing his full-time job as a research lab technician at the local university in Guelph, Ontario—a small city of 150,000 people about an hour south of Toronto. When he wasn’t cleaning, Ahmed would distribute fliers to get more customers.

At first, he was only cleaning three to five houses a week but as his business grew, he needed extra help. He decided to hire some other cleaners as independent contractors—not as employees, because he didn’t want the hassle of all the government paperwork. He also didn’t have enough clients yet to guarantee anybody full-time hours.

So he began sub-contracting out his jobs to other cleaners that he found by posting ads on Kijiji. It’s a platform similar to Thumbtack in the United States. Ahmed would search for cleaning services, contact them about the cleaning job he needed to fill, negotiate a price for them to do the job, and come to a deal..

Basically he was using the Uber model, focusing on building a top-down operation that could work with a lot of different contractors and many, many clients. He later added Virtual Assistants from the Philippines to help with operations and marketing, including social media and blog posting.

What sets Hellamaid apart from typical cleaning companies is the use of technology for online appointment booking. The company also uses a service called Twilio that send out SMS booking reminders and ratings requests.

Ahmed pays his cleaners well above average and treats them like employees. He strives to be the “Starbucks of cleaning services” where his main focus is on the happiness of his cleaners over everything else because he believes that will guarantee great service.

In 2022, annual revenue is expected to be between $1.7M and $2.2M, with a monthly revenue of close to $150,000.

Ahmed’s grateful for that Reddit article that got him started. He’s also glad he pushed beyond what society had led him to believe about business.

First $1,000: The Las Vegas Ghostwriting Service

What It’s About

A writer finds success writing for a series of interesting clients.

Notes from Chris

Episode 2025

Today’s episode is part of a new feature we’re doing in 2022 called ‘Your First $1,000.’ As you might surmise from the title, this is all about how someone made their first $1,000.

How did they get to that point? Not their first $100,000—that’s cool, but it would probably be a long story.

One thing I’ve learned is that once you begin to earn real money, the steps required to go to the next level—whether it’s $1,000 to $2,000, or even to $5,000 or $10,000 are often easier than that first real paycheck.

Apparently, it’s Las Vegas month on the podcast because last week we heard from a guy in Las Vegas who starts a tutoring business focused on the ASVAB, the U.S. Military entrance test. Today we’re going to hear from Brian Rouff, who has a second job as a ghostwriter. He’s done a lot of different projects, several of which he’ll mention in his update.

What It’s About

Today’s caller is seeking advice on how to start on their own. What should they know?

Notes from Chris

Episode 2024

Today’s caller is a hair stylist preparing to leave employment to run her own shop. Congratulations! What can she do to build her initial clientele?

Of course, this applies to lots of service businesses that are opening in a new location. Over time, you hope to serve lots of repeat customers—but where do they come from in the first place? What are some simple things a service provider can do to kickstart the client list?

“I’ve been a hair stylist for a national chain for the past two years. Now I’m ready to strike out on my own and open my shop. I’ve found a good space in a town about fifteen miles away—so it’s close, but it’s also new to me in some ways.

What’s the best way to build a clientele for a service like this … and as quickly and effectively as possible?”
