Music Lover Strikes Chord with Guitar Flipping Hustle

What It’s About

A flipping side hustle that’s music to our ears!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Reselling is a great side hustle option, but you want to do this with items that cost a decent amount so that you can walk away with profit.

Fun Fact

To celebrate the first guitar sale she had, Mark got a new tattoo. It was of her favorite cat, Victor.

Notes from Chris

Episode 713

29-year-old Daniella Flores is already a seasoned side hustler. She’s been doing it for years. It all started as a way to help her pay off her debt, but has since evolved to serve a greater purpose. That purpose is to live a more sustainable life, and eventually gain financial freedom.

So, it came to no surprise when Daniella’s wife, Mark, began experimenting with a side hustle of her own.

Mark has been in the music scene for years, and she especially loves guitars. In fact, she says it’s kind of an obsession. And, as a self-proclaimed “collector of things,” she ended up accumulating a lot of guitars through the years.

We all know that life can have ups and downs financially. During one of the dry spells, Mark decided to sell some old guitars that she had bought, but had no use for anymore. This gave her the extra boost of cash she needed.

As this went on, Mark realized that she could make even more money if she restored pieces of the guitars. With just a few fixes, like simply replacing a rusty screw and doing a quick paint job, the price could go up by 40%.

This got her gears turning. What if she bought and flipped guitars as a side hustle? She already had plenty of inventory on hand, and it would give her an excuse to buy more guitars!

This was perfect for her: Mark could buy a guitar she was interested in and enjoy it for a while. Then when she was ready to sell it, she could flip it and end up making money from the process. It was music to her ears.

She started by selling some of the guitars that she already had. Then she began scouring websites like eBay and Craigslist.

With her extensive knowledge of guitars and the music community, she had a pretty good idea of which ones would be high ticket items. For example, brands like Gibson and Fender are huge hits in the United States, since they’ve been in the country for over 100 years.

Mark began flipping guitars a year and a half ago. As she’s learned how to fine tune her hustle, she now makes at least $1,500 from flipping guitars … and that’s on a bad month. She makes $3,000 or more on a good one, which are usually around the holidays or in the summer, when people are wanting to pick up a new hobby.

Mark also says that there is no “trick” for what she’s doing. She says that it takes research and asking yourself how you can be competitive in a market. Like all side hustles, it’s necessary to find out what people are willing to pay for the product and how much your time is worth.

As her hustle grows, she and Daniella are excited to see what progress will occur this holiday season. Both of them now have side hustles that are bringing in $2,000 or more a month. It looks like this couple struck the right chord.

Veteran Turns Sweet Compulsion Into Obsessive Candy Hustle

What It’s About

A veteran embraces her unique challenges and creates a sweet side hustle.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

When I started my company I made sure that I had a cushion. I never took out a loan and never spent more money than I could afford. That is one of the most important things! Of course when I first started my business it was a true side hustle and I had to occasionally use my income from my regular job to cover expenses.

Fun Fact

65% of the American candy brands have been around for more than five decades. With that sort of longevity many brands are incredibly well known and have a big market share. However, with the market for candy in the USA approaching $20 billion there is plenty of room for side hustlers and smaller players to make their mark.

Notes from Chris

Episode 702

Ellen Laguatan worked in the military for 30 years. Throughout her service she held many positions, including maintaining F-16 fighter jets, as well as working in computer and radio maintenance. She loved her work.

At work, Ellen kept a candy jar on her desk… and she had to have that candy arranged in a certain way. Otherwise, she couldn’t eat it. What appeared as a peculiar quirk to most people, was actually a severe condition to her.

You see, Ellen has OCD, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, a mental illness that affects 2.2 million Americans. It’s characterized by having unwanted and repetitive thoughts, urges, or images that don’t go away. The famous example is of someone washing their hands over and over again, despite them already being clean.

Early on, Ellen’s coworkers would mix up her candy jar not realizing how negative the consequences could be. But, gradually they learned this was a real problem for her and made efforts not to disrupt her. One day, Ellen was away from her desk a new colleague took some candy and unwittingly rearranged the whole jar. When she returned to her desk the OCD took over.

(She says he just didn’t know and he’s now a good friend.)

She spent the whole afternoon rearranging the candy jar using her specific counts and OCD traits. She wasn’t able to leave for the day until it was done.

While rearranging the candy Ellen thought… “I shouldn’t have to do this. I’m not the only person who eats their candy this way, I know I’m not. There should be an OCD Candy Company for people like me!”

The idea stuck in Ellen’s head like taffy. Fast forward a bit and Ellen’s retirement is now coming up. But she wasn’t sour patch about it. In fact, she was looking forward to trying something new.

When the opportunity arrived for Ellen to open a small storefront, she went for it. In this, she would stock lollipops, sweets, books and accessories as well as her specially OCD packed candy. The total cost of setting everything up was $6,450. This cost included her initial candy products, deposit, and rent as well as packaging for the original batches.

Over the next two years Ellen noticed that the candy in her store seemed to be the best sellers so she decided to double down and transition into a full-on candy shop called, The OCD Candy Company.

Ellen actually received some negative feedback about the name and considered calling it The Organized Candy Company instead, but decided against it. Some people may be offended, but many others will visit the store because of the name and Ellen is happy with that trade-off. It means she can help more people by providing them candy they can eat.

If she was going to run a traditional candy store, she would need to increase her range. While her specialty was the OCD candy products she had created, lots of potential customers would just want typical candy. So she began carrying a broad range including vegan, sugar-free, gluten free, nut free and even soy free candy of all different flavors.

The nature of retail means that her profits fluctuate a lot. There are some really great days where Ellen might sell hundreds of dollars worth of candy, and some really bad days where she may sell nothing.

On average she makes about $1,750 a month in profit. She keeps a close eye on her monthly expenses and knows how much she needs to make each week to turn a profit.

While it’s great that she makes some side income doing this, for Ellen, the real reward has been being able to help other OCD sufferers.

One of the things she noticed a few months after launching was parents, teachers and carers of autistic children coming to buy her candy. Through their visits, she discovered her candy helps autistic kids suffering with OCD tendencies enjoy candy like everyone else. With that knowledge, she decided to take a portion of each sale and donate it to charities for children with autism.

The people in her target market return again and again. When they come into the store with these requests they aren’t laughed at, judged or looked down on. Ellen understands them and, through her candy company, helps them.

Dog Stocking Hustle Earns Husky Payoff

What It’s About

A holiday-themed side hustle worth howling about.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

If you’re thinking of doing something similar, Jeff suggests that you try to find a niche that isn’t overly competitive and go after it. And don’t forget to do your research!

Fun Fact

Jeff spent 15 hours uploading all of his products to eBay. He figured it’d be another great channel for growing sales, but that season he made a stunning one sale on the platform. Whomp whomp…

Notes from Chris

Episode 692

Jeff Moriarty has been in marketing for 17 years, but he’s not stuck in the old ways of doing things. He’s adapted over the years to become a master of SEO and has a knack for pay-per-click advertising—and these two skills led him to the seasonal business that would become his new side hustle.

One of Jeff’s clients at his agency sold dog supplies. Leashes, food bowls, that kind of thing. But you probably would never have guessed the top seller…

Dog Christmas stockings. Yup! Stockings outsold everything else—and by a significant margin.

Jeff was the only person in the company working with this client, and his SEO strategy was really paying off. The company was getting more and more traffic, but the owner wasn’t into it. It was getting harder and harder to compete with Amazon, and margins were already slim, so he decided to exit the business and closed his e-commerce store in 2014.

Jeff felt like he had a secret. None of his coworkers knew how well the store had been doing from the stockings. Should he go for his own dog Christmas stocking business?

Jeff didn’t really see himself as a side hustler. He liked the marketing agency life, and it seemed like adding another responsibility on top would just be too much.

But then he couldn’t stop thinking about it. Weeks and months went by. Every now and then he’d look around the search rankings to see if any other stores were dominating the Google rankings using his strategy—and every time he did, the entrepreneurial flame burned a little brighter.

Sure, there were other stores selling dog Christmas stockings, but none of them seemed to really have a dedicated, mindful strategy—either that or they just didn’t know how to execute… but Jeff did.

The trick that worked for his former client wasn’t trying to rank for broad phrases like “dog Christmas stockings”. The trick was targeting very specific phrases, like “basset hound Christmas stockings”. And while no more than a few hundred people were searching these breed-specific phrases each Christmas season, he knew that once he had a couple dozen breed options up, he’d be able to bring in a significant amount of organic traffic. These people were also willing buyers.

Finally, a full year after his client closed up shop, Jeff gave in. The opportunity was just too good, the strategy too obvious (he’d already made it work in the past, after all). But he didn’t want to end up with tons of product in his garage, and he didn’t have a lot of money to invest, so he decided to go with a business model he’d been hearing a lot about for the past few years: drop shipping.

His store, Dog Christmas Stockings, launched in the Fall of 2015.

It was finally time to execute the SEO strategy he’d been brooding over for the last year. And he had to do it quickly—the prime stocking buying season was just a couple months away.

42 product pages and a couple weeks later, organic traffic started trickling in. It was slow at first, but as Jeff checked his search rankings daily, he became more and more excited.

That November, Dog Christmas Stockings made its first sale, and its second, and its tenth. By Christmas, Jeff had sold over $1,000 worth of product. His own cut after the drop shipping fees was just a small portion of that, but it was more than enough for the work he put into it—and he knew he could do better next year.

As we roll over into the holidays, he’s pumped to see how 2018 turns out. His pages are ranking higher than ever, crushing the competition with three years of solid history, and he’s got some extra products he’s trying out this year.

Jeff is hilariously nonchalant about the whole thing. As he likes to say, “It beats wasting the night on the couch.”

Business Analyst Creates Budding Side Hustle

What It’s About

A reselling side hustle that’s really up in smoke!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Stone says it can be a challenge to choose which products to sell, especially in a diverse and discerning market. So he tries to choose something for everybody: The luxury boutique item customer, the fiscally aware customer, the uninformed customer, and of course, the practical, everyday customer.

Fun Fact

Did you know that beer and cannabis are cousins… in the plant family? The hops that are used to make beer are in the same family of flowering plants as cannabis. Cannabis is also one of civilization’s earliest crops, along with grain, and has been harvested for at least 6,000 years. Seems like the seeds have been firmly planted.

Notes from Chris

Episode 686

Stone Everett, a business performance analyst from Orlando, Florida, has always had a side project up his sleeve. For as long as he can remember, he’s been coming up with ideas to make pocket money.

He taught himself how to build websites from watching YouTube videos and tried a few projects to test out different ideas. They were slow-burners at first, but eventually, they started to bring in some additional income for him before he lost interest, or the ideas became dated with time. He knew that cannabis was a trend that was on the up-and-up, especially as more states legalized the drug and the stigma around usage lessened.

However, he didn’t have any interest in becoming a seller of cannabis itself—it was when he noticed a burning hole in the online cannabis accessories market that Stone realized this could become a new source of income for him.

He called his latest project Relief Treats. His goal was to create an online directory of cannabis-related accessories that he would either resell himself or just earn commissions from customers he referred.

This way, he doesn’t have to have a full inventory of products, nor does he need to be responsible for sending anything out to customers.

As Stone puts it, “My dropship model makes my inventory possibilities practically limitless so there’s almost no additional cost to appeal to as many demographics as possible.” The broad array of products set him off to a blazing start.

He says that, even though there’s a lot of competition, he stands out because his content is always fresh, valuable, and engaging, and his products are attractive.

While Stone says growing his side hustle is pretty dope, he admits that it can be tough to balance his personal life, full-time job, and Relief Treats. But, at the end of the day, it’s worth it as it’s already bringing in an additional $1,200/month in profits—approximately a quarter of the income his full-time day job provides.

His next big move is to grow his side hustle into a flowering business. He wants to expand his product selection even more, especially as states continue to legalize cannabis. Relief Treats might be a budding enterprise now, but he has high expectations for the future.

Tennessean Meets Nepalese Sherpa on Lyft Ride, Sells Adventure Trips

What It’s About

A couple says “yes” to adventure and help others with their bucket lists.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

How does one decide on pricing for such a huge package deal? Mark starts with Dawa’s pricing as a subcontractor. Mark and Holly then add their margins on top of that. They want to be known as a company that offers an amazing service with extra goodies and attention at a reasonable price.

Fun Fact

“Sherpa” is a word commonly used to describe a mountain guide or porter who works in the Everest region. However, Sherpa is the actual name of an ethnic group of people who live in the mountains of Nepal.

Notes from Chris

Episode 677

Do you believe in fate? Call it kismet, chance, or the stars aligning, Mark Johnson believes that without it, he never would have started his side hustle. This fortuitous experience all happened because his truck needed repairs.

Mark and his wife Holly founded and operate Hobnail Trekking Co. They provide full-service treks to majestic locales in Nepal, including Everest Base Camp.

So how did fate play a part in the start of this side hustle? Trek back to August 2016, when Mark was one day away from leaving his job as a communications director at a nonprofit organization. It was a hot and sticky afternoon in Nashville, Tennessee, and the air-conditioner in Mark’s truck had quit working. Needing a ride to pick up that truck after repairs at his mechanic’s garage, Mark summoned a Lyft driver.

This was a Lyft ride that would change the course of history…. Or at least, the next point in our story.

Mark struck up a pleasant conversation with the young driver, whose name is Dawa Jangbu Lama Sherpa. Dawa spoke fluent English, but with an accent Mark couldn’t pinpoint. When Mark discovered Dawa was from Nepal, he asked if he knew anything about the Everest Base Camp trek. The trek was something Mark and Holly had put on their bucket list years ago. Dawa grinned and answered, “I am an Everest Region Sherpa. I’ve guided that trip dozens of times. I own a small trekking company in Nepal.”

This was a defining moment for Mark—what was the chance that he would meet this man, an Everest Region Sherpa—on a Lyft ride in Nashville, Tennessee?!

They exchanged information, and a few days later, Mark and Holly met to learn more about making the Everest Base Camp trek in the spring of 2018. At the time they had no idea how they’d pay for it, or how to even manage the logistics with their three kids, but they committed to making it happen.

As Mark researched more on the Everest Base Camp trek, he began to notice there were no regional companies that offered this trek. In fact, as far as he could tell, there were no companies with headquarters east of Colorado. Mark’s next thought was—why not create their own trekking company?

In January 2017, Mark and Holly launched Hobnail Trekking Co. After creating a company website, the couple booked a local venue to hold an informational meeting about trekking in Nepal. By Mark’s own admission, Dawa was the key to their success. A huge difference in their business is the fact that Dawa actually lives in Nashville part of the year. This means that potential trekkers get to meet and socialize with Dawa at pre-trek social events. This builds trust in the company before heading to the other side of the world.

Over the next few months, Hobnail held numerous meetings in outdoor retail stores in the Southeastern US and was featured in several newspapers. They also developed some strategic partnerships with other like-minded businesses. By October 2017, they had booked a full trek—15 people—including Mark and Holly—to depart in March 2018. After returning from that first amazing trek, they booked another group for the Fall 2018 trekking season. They are expecting substantially more business in 2019.

Gross annual income for Hobnail in their first year was $54,000—with start-up costs almost that much. This was in part due to initially underpricing treks and some steep costs associated with the custom gear they provide trekkers. However, Mark feels the custom gear is important to inspire confidence and trust in the company. The family has been able to start this company while Mark works as a freelance writer and Holly works as a nonprofit administrator.

Hobnail Trekking Co. is taking a bucket list item to new heights!

Go Vote! Freelance Designer Sells Voter Turnout Postcards

What It’s About

A designer helps get voters to the polls!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

It’s hard to make money selling on Etsy. I see a lot of people selling the same few items using the same skills that everyone else does. People who’d seen me knitting or drawing or crafting would tell me “Hey! You should open an Etsy store!” without thinking about how much work it really takes to set up a viable small business. Instead, find a niche, start small, and see what happens. Be nimble and open to new ideas, and don’t spend a lot of money until things work out.

Fun Fact

Mailing postcards to potential voters has become a big movement that works to get people off the couch and voting. The largest group of this type can be found at PostcardstoVoters.org, a community that has amassed over 20,000 volunteers that arrange parties all over the country. They get together in small groups, have a party and write personal postcards to potential voters in key elections.

Notes from Chris

Episode 675

Mary Hawkins believes everyone should have a say in the way their country is run. Last year she was looking for a way to encourage as many people as possible to go out and vote on election day. But, she’d be the first to tell you she’s no in your face political activist. As a self-described introvert, the idea of cold calling or door knocking didn’t appeal to her.

What she needed was activism for introverts… and she soon stumbled across the perfect thing. Furthermore, what started as a way to encourage voters would turn into Marys first successful side hustle. But before we reveal the results, let’s take a quick look at Mary’s background. Her campaign trail if you will.

On top of her passion for democracy, Mary is also a talented animator and designer. She’s been freelancing for over 10 years and has worked with brands like Viacom, L’Oreal, NBC and many more.

For those working a traditional office job the life of a freelancer probably sounds glamorous. You can work from home in your underwear and only work the hours that you want. Everything is perfect in the freelancer life. Right?

Well, freelancing has its benefits but it also has challenges. One of the biggest disadvantages is that you inevitably have periods without much work. That can be worrisome financially, especially when you aren’t sure when the next job is coming through.

For Mary, quiet periods occur around mid-year when many people in the media take vacations. In 2017, it was actually a welcome break because Mary was just about to stumble across the perfect type of political activism. One that appealed to her introverted nature and allowed her to use her design skills to encourage people to get out and vote.

Mary was introduced to the world of postcards to voters. This is a movement where groups of volunteers write postcards to registered voters reminding them to vote in their upcoming election. The postcards are hand written directly to each individual and, data suggests, have a huge positive effect on voter turnout.

Mary loved the idea and immediately volunteered to write postcards in her down time. Soon she was sending out more and more, into the hundreds. She enjoyed it so much that she believed she could bring some artistic flair to the postcards themselves.

The design was the easy part—after all, Mary was an expert. She made a couple of cute postcards for voters and then set about printing them up for her own use. It wasn’t long before other volunteers and friends commented on her made-for-purpose postcards and suggested she try selling them on Etsy.

She agreed and launched her side hustle, Mary Likes Postcards.

Since the beginning of the year, she has sold over $60,000 worth of postcards through her Etsy store and existing customers. The exact profit Mary is going to work out when things settle down a bit later in the year, but it will be significant. Since she does the work herself, her only real expenses are printing and shipping.

How does she generate that kind of money all while still working a full-time job? Mary understands this is a seasonal business. She can maximize profits from Mary Likes Postcards during the voting season and increase her freelance hours when time permits.

She hopes to grow it more next year, especially as the election cycle ramps up again next year, and then again in 2020 when it really ramps up with another presidential election. She’s already added additional products to her store, including stickers and stamps that people can use to decorate the postcards.

Cast your ballot for freedom! My vote is definitely in favor of this project.

Zombie Apocalypse Prevention Podcast Earns $200,000/Year

What It’s About

A podcast to help you weather the apocalypse!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

What is the real genius behind Jack’s success? It’s not that he has the prettiest website, the best interview guests, or the coolest giveaways—it’s that he’s engaging, honest (sometimes brutally honest), and genuine on the show—and his listeners find this to be a breath of fresh air.

Fun Fact

To celebrate breaking 200,000 daily podcast listeners, Jack hosted a small, local 3-hour party in his home that podcast listeners ended up flying in from all over the country to be a part of.

Notes from Chris

Episode 674

By most standards, Jack Spirko was thriving. He was a co-owner of a holding company that managed three individual businesses. These businesses were making a lot of money. All was well … except for Jack himself.

He had been living the high life of corporate success for years, but he felt pulled back to his roots: the mountains of Pennsylvania. Gardening, hunting, fishing, bartering with neighbors, growing most of their own food. He missed the nature, the family dinners, and the self-sufficiency that drove it all.

After the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001 (9/11), it became much more than a faraway goal. What he wanted more than anything was just to spend time with his family—because as the world had just seen, you never know when disaster will strike.

That’s when the journey into the world of preparedness (or prepping) began. Jack started teaching himself about topics including permaculture, self-defense, and food storage. He paid off all his debts, learned everything there is to know about backup generators, and became an expert on Libertarian philosophy. Slowly, Jack became a master survivalist—but he didn’t leave his job.

One of his clients said they wanted to start up a new thing called ‘podcasts’. Nobody on the team knew how, so Jack picked up the responsibility (this was, remember, about 10 years ago). He figured there was no better way to learn the in’s and out’s of podcasts than to try making one himself. So he bought an $18 headset, a $30 Sony digital recorder, a $10/month web hosting plan, and started recording himself in the car.

He talked into the recorder about what he knew: self-reliance, getting out of debt, and prepping for the next disaster. There was no real script or agenda or performance. It was just Jack, being himself—grit, passion, and all. He uploaded the episodes to his new website, The Survival Podcast, and started sharing them with friends.

It turned out that he really liked doing this. It was fun freely giving away his secrets to self-sufficiency, so he started recording a new show every day on his way to work—and his few listeners (mostly friends and family) were eating it up.

Jack quickly realized that The Survival Podcast could be more than a test hobby. People were craving the skills and insights he had been learning over the last seven years. He just had to figure out how to monetize.

In February of 2009, Jack launched the Survival Podcast Membership. For $50 a year, listeners could have access to exclusive discounts, a couple dozen member-only videos, and a handful of ebooks on survival topics, like how to How to Build Top Bar Beehives and Traditional Clay Ovens. Jack figured the discounts on products alone made it a no-brainer.

Many of his listeners agreed.

That month, The Survival Podcast earned $20,000. It was unbelievable—far more than he had made any other month from sponsorships or the occasional Adsense Ad. The next month, he made another $15,000.

The podcast has been running for ten years now, and it’s bigger than ever. Jack just celebrated his first ever day with 200,000 downloads, and he’s been consistently earning multiple six figures for nine of his ten years.

Most of that comes from the site membership, which has grown to include discounts from 70 brands, and a daily featured Amazon.com product now makes up about 20% of that income. A few other streams, like YouTube ads and an annual workshop, also contribute some.

For Jack, the wild financial success isn’t the best part—in his corporate years, he’d already learned that money isn’t the key to happiness. The true success is knowing he’s helping thousands of people reach for their lifestyle and financial goals, and he’s getting to achieve his along the way.

Weekly Recap: Weekly Recap: Finding a “Hook” as a Dietitian

Notes from Chris

Episode 673

THEMES & TAKEAWAYS:

This week, we had a listener email from Hazel in the UK.

Hazel has always been interested in starting her own side hustle, but can’t land on an idea that she thinks that people will pay for. She’d love to start something that extends from her background in nutrition, but she’s noticed that some of the nutrition businesses that we’ve talked about on the show are focused on specific diets or trends.

Her predicament is that she don’t want to create a product—instead, she’d like to create a service, but she feels that the market may already be saturated with glamorous “Instagram ready” individuals who promote very strict diets.

To hear my feedback on this topic and more, check out today’s Weekly Recap.

Hobbyist Photographer Finds $800/Month Hiding in Local Newspaper

What It’s About

A photography side hustle that helps sell houses.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

When he started, Adam would reschedule his entire day around whenever was best for the real estate agent, even changing his schedule on the fly. More than once he did a job and the agents had conveniently “forgotten” to bring their checkbooks, so he would do a job and not get paid for weeks afterwards. He realized he would need to set some boundaries. He still tries to be flexible, but he now has a policy of getting paid before handing over the final photos.

It’s an important lesson—make sure that you’re taking care of yourself too!

Fun Fact

Adam once went to photograph a multi-family home, and stumbled upon an illegal basement apartment with a mentally challenged 60-year-old man who had been living there for the past 30 years! He’d been given just 30 days to get out and followed Adam around confessing his sadness and despair to him.

Notes from Chris

Episode 672

A summer revenue manager for Suffolk University, Adam Hoeg has always had a passion for photography. Adam found he had a knack for finding the best perspective for whatever he was shooting. He also had another passion for real estate for as long as he can remember. But it wasn’t until a few months ago that he paired them together in a picturesque side hustle.

He was simply flipping through the real estate ads in his local newspaper when the opportunity came into focus. Many of the homes for sale had grainy cell phone pictures, but it wasn’t until he saw a beautiful home from his childhood represented in such a way that his resolve set in. He immediately sent an email to the listing agent, offering to take better images, and the agent responded quickly, saying that they were interested.

He realized that he could draw from prior experience—his own family’s home had gone up for sale and he’d witnessed the photoshoot by a local photographer a year earlier. He was quick to look her up on Facebook and ask for advice. In anticipation of his first paid shoot, he contacted his friend next door who had a near identical home, and they let him complete a practice shoot.

Unfortunately, the home responsible for the impulsive hustle went under contact before he could take photos of it, but Adam made good use of the setback. He set up Instagram and Facebook profiles, posting sample work of family and friend’s homes. He then offered a fifty dollar visa gift card to a lucky winner who liked and shared his page—later on offering the same reward for a referral bonus to real estate agents.

After conducting some research, Adam figured out an ideal range for what he could charge realtors. To undercut his competition, he decided to go with the lower end of the spectrum. He even gives fifty percent off for the first job he is hired for.

He ended up getting his first job within two weeks!

So far he’s only been doing this for four months, but he’s making $800-1200 dollars each month on the side. This has already made it possible for Adam and his dog to move into a nicer apartment. That’s right, the dog has benefitted from Adam’s hustle.

Ho hopes to grow the business so he can raise his rates, and maybe one day even sink his lens into the more competitive Boston market. You never know, the picture perfect side hustle might be hiding in your local newspaper.

Chemical Analyst Strikes a Side Hustle Match(Stick)

What It’s About

A side hustle that’s truly on fire!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

So here’s a challenge for you: take note of some of the random items you encounter through your day. See if you can figure out where they come from.

Imagine that you had to find a way to either buy them or commission them or make them yourself—how would you do it?

Fun Fact

Everyone has that one friend who collects matchbooks from restaurants. “Phillumeny” describes the people who collect them, and other match-associated things.

Notes from Chris

Episode 665

They say that where there’s smoke, there’s fire. And, in Melissa Moore’s case, where there’s fire, there’s a side hustle. Based in Atlanta, Georgia, the chemical manufacturing senior analyst is also a lifelong candle and incense lover.

Her side hustle is matchsticks and the paper you strike them on. You know the striker strip on the side of matchboxes? Well, she imports them by the sheet (about the size of a piece of paper, US letter size) and sells them online on Etsy, Amazon, eBay, and my own website.

In addition to generic ones, she also cuts them down into various sizes to create more artistic strikers—circles, squares, rectangles, etc., as well as hearts, moons, letters, and even outlines of US states. The sheets and the die-cut shapes have an adhesive backing, so they function like stickers.

How did this come to be?

For years, Melissa tolerated tacky lighters and ugly matchboxes to help fulfill her candlelit dreams. But when she took a casual wander through stacks of homemade pottery at an arts festival, an idea sparked in her mind.

While perusing oil warmers, she noticed that there was a small compartment on some of them that could be the perfect size to hold matches. The clay also gave it an easy striking surface. It was while staring at the oil warmer that Melissa realized that all she really wanted was a cute container to hold her matches in and complete her candle collection.

So, she turned to Google to start searching for match holders. But all she could ever find were dingy antiques or flimsy plastic ones, which just wouldn’t do for her modern decorative needs. After many days, and even more refined search terms later, Melissa found the perfect jar size for her grocery store-sourced matches.

But just because she had the matches, and a nice container to put them in, did not mean her work was done just yet. She still needed a way to light those matches. Sheer willpower wouldn’t do the job, so Melissa went back to the drawing board to figure out how to source striking paper that she could stick onto her jars.

A few weeks after that she got her first paper delivery in the mail. A Sunday afternoon crafting session later, Melissa had glued the paper to her containers, filled them with matchsticks, and realized that she couldn’t possibly be the only person who needed an answer to the inevitable matchstick/container problem in their lives.

The side hustle fire was lit—she called it Strike a Match.

That was seven years ago. It’s been a slow burn since then, Melissa now brings in about $3,500 in monthly revenue. Her profit margins are almost 50%, which means she’s making just under $2,000 in profit each month. Since people use striking paper and matches for a plethora of reasons, like gifts, emergency supplies, or to pair with antique match holders, Melissa has pretty steady sales through the year.

Melissa realized how fragmented the matchstick industry was because there wasn’t one ‘go-to’ destination, so she set herself the goal of making the purchasing experience easy and fun. It’s an additional bonus that it’s given her the freedom to spend more time with her family.

Sounds like she’s on a hot streak.
