Q&A: What kind of business can I start with $300?

What It’s About

If you only have a small amount of money, what’s the best hustle for you? (Hint: it’s a trick question!)

Notes from Chris

Episode 1098

I’m so glad to get this question today … it’s a problematic question that I often hear variations of. If you have ever thought, “oh, I have a certain amount of money, what can I do with it”—this question is for you.

If you go on a vacation, thinking about the available budget is perfectly reasonable. You have $1,000 or whatever the amount is, so you ask, “Where can I go for $1,000?”

But this thinking doesn’t apply to your moneymaking side project … or at least, it shouldn’t. I’ll tell you why, but first I have to thank Oliver for bringing up this question.

I don’t have a lot of disposable income right now, so I always like hearing stories with low startup costs. I could probably spend about $500 but no more … what’s the best business or side hustle for me to pursue?

Q&A: How do I build trust with my audience?

What It’s About

Our first listener question for the new year!

Notes from Chris

Episode 1097

Let’s talk about building trust with your audience and converting them to paying subscribers! I love this question for lots of reasons. It’s relevant to many of our listeners, and I’m also a fan of this person’s project.

Since we are just starting with the new format, I wanted to explain that there will be two kinds of questions you’ll hear through this new series. One kind is general—like “What are the pros and cons of different shopping carts?” for example, or “What do you think about this particular online network?”—and the other is more specific because it relates directly to someone’s side hustle.

My goal with these specific questions is twofold:

1. Most of us learn through example, and most of the questions you’ll hear are relevant to more than just the person asking them (that’s probably true in general, but it’s certainly true in this series)

2. This is the year of interaction! I want you to have a chance to hear directly from many of the people in our community who are doing the things you heard about every day in the stories for our first 1,095 episodes.

Today’s question comes from Joshira:

My side hustle is Dreams Over Debt (DreamsOverDebt.com). How can I make an authentic and meaningful connection with my audience to convert them to paying subscribers without coming off as a selfish salesperson.

New Year, New Format – Don’t Miss This Episode!

What It’s About

Welcome to a new year—and a new format for Side Hustle School!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

A new year means new opportunities. What will do you to make the most of it? How will you turn inspiration into action?

Fun Fact

Remix: a variant of an original recording (such as a song) made by rearranging or adding to the original.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1096

Breaking news: everything is new! For the first time in three years—and I do mean exactly three years—we are reinventing the format of Side Hustle School. I’ve been working on this for several months and I’m excited to kick things off today.

Longtime listeners, here’s what’s not changing —

1. The daily format. It’s still every day (7x/week) and still short, less than 10 minutes per episode on average. I know you’re busy…

2. The message. We’re still all about helping people with jobs embrace the world of moneymaking side projects. Maybe you’ve never identified as an entrepreneur, but you understand the importance of having more than one source of income.

Ok, so what is changing? What’s changing is that 2020 is The Year of Interaction. This year, in real-time, we’re going to do a year of Questions and Answers and instruction where I guide many of our listeners—perhaps even you—as they go from idea to income. It’s essentially live coaching—for free—and you can listen in and learn as we go.

We’ll still have two case studies (stories) a week. The other days will consist of Q&A and a special Classroom series where I’ll be teaching in a start-to-finish format starting on Sunday and then going every Sunday through the year.

And you can participate!

Bodybuilder Bakes Heavyweight Protein Cakes

What It’s About

This bodybuilder proves you can have your cake and eat it too.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Problem-solving is a great way to stumble upon a side hustle idea. We love that Christine saw an important gap that was relevant to her own life and discovered this side hustle.

Fun Fact

By inserting a packet of sprinkles with each cake mix, Lil Buff customers are able to get creative and personalize their cakes—which leads to tons of social sharing.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1095
Christine Moore had just given birth to her third child in just over three years. She was tired and, in her words, felt “frumpy and lumpy.” She wanted to take back control of her body and get ready for a bikini shoot, so she took up an aggressive routine: bodybuilding with a strict, low-sugar diet.

It wasn’t a small move, but Christine was disciplined and determined. Month after month, her body gained strength and endurance—but her mind started to wear down. Depriving her sweet tooth was good for her toning figure, but not for her mental health.

She’d inevitably crave sweets to the point where she’d chow down on a couple of donuts, feel bad about it, and then work out extra-hard to make up the difference. It wasn’t a sustainable pattern. If she was going to be able to keep up her new lifestyle, she had to find a way to satisfy her desires without overindulging.

Christine ordered some whey protein powder and a few other healthy ingredients—flax seeds, cashew milk, apple sauce, and stevia—and started thinking up ways to make something sweet and nutritious. Out of one-part curiosity and one-part desperation, she blended up the ingredients, threw them in the microwave for a couple of minutes, and then took out the bowl.

Lo and behold, to her surprise, she had made a cake—with 26g of protein, 2g of sugar, and 16g of carbs. A healthy, delicious cake. In fact, since she was only using whole, healthy ingredients, her cake had nearly the same nutritional facts as her daily chicken, rice, and asparagus meal.

She couldn’t believe it. She could, literally, have her cake and eat it too—every single day.

Christine experimented with more recipes and posted pictures of her creations on social media, to much enthusiasm from friends and followers. She hadn’t really thought of her cakes as a business opportunity—she enjoyed her day job as an anesthetist—but the thought of making money on the side was captivating. (Making and baking…)

And so Christine began baking cakes for friends and hand-delivering them for $5 each. One day she had a ton of orders, stayed up till midnight, and realized that selling complete cakes wasn’t something she could scale. She needed a different approach: sell the mix, and not the full cake.

And, within a few weeks, Lil Buff Bakery came to life and did its first push-ups.

In October of 2016, Lil Buff soared past $10,000 in sales. It was also the month she launched her first product variation: a pumpkin-spice flavored mix. Naturally, the organic social shares just kept piling on.

The following January, Lil Buff generated over $30,000, and sales continued to rise from the oven. In fact, the numbers have doubled year after year for the past three.

For the most part, her marketing has mainly been about stoking the fire of her most loyal fans with recipe content, fifteen new and seasonal flavors, and supplementary products, like microwavable containers.

But for Christine, it’s not enough—because there were still thousands and thousands of healthy eaters out there who can’t enjoy Lil Buff cakes. That’s why she just released a set of vegan mixes—and there are more specialized diet options coming soon.

It hasn’t been a cake walk, but like a good gluten-free protein-dense treat, she has risen to the occasion.

Husband and Wife Team Pampers Their Way To Profit

What It’s About

A couple brews up a side hustle selling all-natural self-care products.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Even if you’re selling physical goods, you don’t need a store or a location—you can ship your product directly from the manufacturer to the fulfillment center. So with a $1,000 – $2,000 investment and some time, you can get started.

Fun Fact

Loreal and Estee Lauder are far from the only skincare brands out there. In fact, there are literally hundreds of smaller companies cashing in on what is 62 billion dollar per year market.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1094

Tony and Fei Ouyang lived and worked in one of the most expensive cities in the world, San Francisco. Tony was a marketing manager for a large finance startup, while Fei was a product manager at Cisco.

They met in university ten years earlier. While many of their friends went on to start companies, they took regular jobs instead. Not that it was a decision they regretted. It afforded them a great lifestyle in a beautiful city where they had two kids and earned plenty of money to support them.

But working at startups can wear down even the most optimistic person after a while…

That was certainly the case for Tony, who, in 2017 was eager to find stimulation outside his nine to five. To do that, he explored the idea of starting a side hustle.

There was no grand plan for it. He was just looking for a hobby and figured he may as well pick one that could make money. It didn’t have to be a lot. In fact, he had a very specific goal in mind. Earn enough to pay for his fifteen-dollar work lunches.

He quickly landed on the idea of selling a physical product on Amazon. He had a family member who’d had success doing that, so it seemed feasible.

He had two criteria for the product: One, it shouldn’t be something breakable like glass or electronics. That would avoid quality issues and returns. Two, he had to make at least a fifty percent profit margin.

In the end, he landed on selling cold brew filter bags for coffee. It was a product he’d use himself, being an avid cold brew drinker. Furthermore, he’d seen the rise of cold brew in places like Starbucks and knew it was rising in popularity.

With the product idea set, it was time to find a manufacturer…

Tony hunted on Alibaba where he found one in China. He put in an order of one hundred bags for six hundred and forty dollars. After that, he found freelancers on Fiverr.com to create the graphics and labels for just over one hundred dollars. In total, he spent around eight hundred dollars.

Soon after, he used the Fulfillment by Amazon program to list the product for sale and. Although it was December, the Christmas rush didn’t help. In fact, he didn’t make his first sale until mid-January the following year.

Still, within a couple of months the cold brew bags were generating enough money to cover his lunches, and they tasted oh so sweet. In fact, he was so happy with his profits that he regularly indulged himself with extra guacamole.

Just a few months later Tony’s wife, having seen the success of the cold brew bag, wanted in on the action.

So they became a husband and wife team and agreed to take the side hustle more seriously—which meant it needed a name. They came up with Doppeltree, a play on the word Doppelganger. Because two is better than one!

Fei chose to sell a new product under the same brand name. To find one, she repeated Tony’s process from a few months before. That is, she wanted to devise a simple product that she herself would buy, one that wouldn’t break, and had a good profit margin.

It was easier than she expected.

With two kids at home and a demanding day job, Fei was always looking for a tiny moment to pamper herself, a little relaxation in her day. To do that, she often used all-natural beauty and skincare products.

After exfoliating for ideas she settled into under-eye masks. These are small patches that are placed under the eye to minimize the look of wrinkled and ‘tired eyes’. Just what Fei and every other hard-working woman, or man, needs. She and Tony again sourced a supplier from Alibaba, who partnered with the pair for their pampering product.

Just like the cold brew bag, they listed them for sale in Amazon’s ecosystem. Next, like receiving a discount at a day spa, people rushed to order.

With that, the Doppeltree husband and wife team knew it wasn’t a fluke. They were quietly confident that if they launched more products, they could replicate their success. But before they did that, they thought it best to learn how to actually run a business. While Doppeltree was a side hustle now, they knew it had potential for more.

Customers have spoken by opening their wallets to the tune of forty thousand dollars gross per month. A large sum by anyone’s standards, and enough money that Tony can go full-time on Doppeltree for 2020 to have a real go at growth. If it goes well, Fei will quit her day job next.

But for this married couple, the money is a side benefit of being able to own their time and see a path to building their future for the long term.

Everything will be new in just three days… this was Week 52 of the show, so we have two “straggler days” in Week 52 1/2 coming tomorrow and the next day for New Year’s eve, and then we’ll be jumping into something very new and different.

I’d love to give you some honest lessons learned on my part. Overall I’m thrilled and very happy at what we’ve made here. But a critique is always about looking at what could be improved. (Then from there it’s asking what should be improved, because time is limited.)

Twelve Months of Experiments Leads Coach to Clarity

What It’s About

A former librarian checks out a new hustle as a career coach.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Sami tried to follow the advice of online marketers and brands, focusing on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to build her side hustle clientele. Eventually, she trusted her own instincts and found success for her resume and tech personal branding services on LinkedIn.

Fun Fact

There are an estimated 53,300 life coaches across the globe, and nearly 17,500 of those can be found in North America. Ref: Mental Floss

Notes from Chris

Episode 1092

A self-proclaimed mild-mannered librarian, Sami Gardner had a bit of a quarter-life crisis that shook everything up. She went from working in the library to working in a homeless center—after she shaved her head and got really into tarot.

She knew she wanted to keep working with organizations that helped people, so after the library and the homeless center, she shifted to working for an AIDS Foundation.

But she was still feeling restless, and had to do some soul-searching to figure out what was missing. One day, it hit her. As someone who had always dreamed of getting out of her hometown, she had only made it thirty minutes up the highway.

That same day she started looking for an online job that would make a difference in people’s lives, but give her more flexibility to start traveling. Sami ended up working for an online school that offers user experience and web development courses for adults. Her new full-time gig was a Senior Career Specialist, which meant that she got to help students with resumes, portfolios, and networking.

This also allowed her the freedom to hit the road, as long as she was able to email and Skype with her students. Within the first few months of her starting with the company, they asked her to create a course on cover letters and resume writing. It became one of the most popular courses that the school offered, making over a million dollars in revenue over the first six months.

But like so many online gigs, Sami quickly found that she would need to do something else to supplement her monthly income.

And since she already knew she could create an entire course that people would want to buy with her expertise, she wondered “Why am I earning all this money for someone else, and not for myself?”

She started with what she calls the “low-hanging fruit,” reaching out to her network to see if anyone would be interested in hiring her on a freelance basis to help them move their own careers forward.

Most of her initial consulting work was rewriting resumes and helping her clients to navigate professional networks like LinkedIn. Even with this focus, she made a cardinal mistake the first time she tried to scale her freelance career coaching business: she followed what other people told her about building a brand, instead of asking if it really worked for her.

Feeling frustrated while struggling to find leads, she decided to get serious and try some ideas of her own. She invested in an online course and set up a new brand called Career Kickstart Academy. After she had built the website, she created a short guide as an email incentive to grow her list, so that she could start marketing outside her network.

Still unsure what the best method would be for attracting new traffic to the site, she set up a twelve-month challenge for herself. Each month, she would launch something new, to see what reactions and feedback she got. Sami tested a podcast, an online summit, new courses, and any product or media that her competitors had as well. Some things flopped, like her first online course, and other things found traction, like her podcast.

After all that work finding her ideal clients and developing her brand while staying true to herself, Sami made an extra $25,000 during her twelve months of experiments. She still works in her online job with the career school, and has implemented more revenue streams into her business. This way, she always has income coming in the pipeline, and doesn’t panic when there are slow seasons with any of them. She also recently started publishing fiction on Kindle.

Now traveling frequently while helping people kickstart the career of their dreams, she’s definitely brought herself more than thirty minutes up the highway from the life she used to know.

Seattle Developer Takes Flight With Popular Travel Site

What It’s About

A developer creates a travel site with over six million subscribers.

Words of Wisdom

Not ready to go all-in with a new business? Here’s some great perspective from Dave, “I’m a bootstrapper and I think doing the side hustle thing is a great way to test ideas before going ‘all in’ and quitting your day job.”

Fun Fact

Dave’s first employee was his youngest sister, Karen. Three of his siblings have been involved in his businesses, two of them as employees.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1091

Dave Boehl had long thought it would be fun to start a website focused on travel. So when he looked for a project outside of his full-time job, creating GoLastMinute was a natural fit.

Dave was working for the Seattle-based company RealNetworks as a project manager, which meant a lot of responsibility, but not a lot of time spent with hands-on coding. His side project would allow him to stay up-to-date with his tech skills.

Way back in the early 2000s, he’d been a web developer for another site, where he learned how to improve the search forms so that more users would follow through with the booking process. It was a practical experience that he would draw upon now.

He bought the domain for $1,000 through GoDaddy Auctions. That was a lot of money compared to the $10 that an unclaimed domain would cost, but as soon as he saw it, he knew it was the one that he wanted. Fortunately, that was his only real expense in the beginning, aside from $5 a month for hosting.

Initially, the site was little more than a gateway to earn commissions through Expedia.com, the popular agency site. Back then, the Expedia affiliate program was basic—you could link to it, but a technical limitation prevented anyone from including content and pricing on their own site.

That wasn’t a problem for Dave. He coded his own program to get pricing from Expedia and use it on GoLastMinute. It was time consuming and buggy, but the creative solution did what he needed it to do.

He didn’t do much to promote the new venture. He told a few friends and ran some Google ads to drive traffic to the site. About a week later, he referred his first customer, which brought him a commission of about $20.

More referrals came in every now and then, and for the next few years, GoLastMinute was making enough for Dave to cover a few luxuries here and there, or in his words, “beer money.” At some point, he decided it was time to get serious and see if he could grow it into a sustainable business.

That decision came from his belief that he’d found a new way to grow the site’s customer base. To him, it didn’t make sense to do much else until he’d solved that issue.

With his new idea in mind, he redesigned the website as a “daily deals” travel site. At the time, sites like Groupon were growing rapidly, so he applied the same thought to GoLastMinute. The success of the website was tied to the number of subscribers to the site’s daily email: the more people who subscribed, the more people who saw (and bought!) the deals through the site … and the more money Dave made.

When he shifted his model to provide more information and daily deals to people who provided him an email address, his subscriptions exploded. Within two years, he had a million subscribers. He now has about six million.

In a recent year, GoLastMinute brought in more than $2 million dollars. Dave has continued to stay current, and just relaunched the site on a new platform that he plans to make available to the public in early 2020. He hopes to empower other budding travel site owners by giving them the right tools.

Frequent Flyer Formulates Travel-Friendly Dry Shampoo

What It’s About

Travel-friendly dry shampoo for busy people.

Words of Wisdom

Even if you have a great idea, you may need to put that project on hold until you secure what you need to launch. In this story, Laura used one side hustle (walking dogs) to generate enough money to invest in her other side hustle (Dirty Blonde).

Fun Fact

Laura started a side hustle to pay for her side hustle! She used Rover.com to walk dogs, bringing in $500 a month to keep her out of debt as she invested in Dirty Blonde.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1090

As a Senior Account Manager for a marketing agency, Laura Armstrong is most often found on a plane or in a hotel. The time, effort, and supplies needed to bring her hair to life on the road was a constant struggle. She turned to dry shampoo, but the traditional aerosols constantly made a mess. The alternative shake powders were just as frustrating, and they all came in one shade: white.

Unable to find any options that met her needs, she set to the task of creating her own dirty blonde natural dry shampoo, super packable in a small tin with a no-mess applicator brush. Wash, rinse, and dry turned into dip, dab, and go. Little did she know the long-haul journey it would take her on.

Her side hustle, aptly named Dirty Blonde Dry Shampoo, started with a Rover account, where she walked dogs as a means to save up the money she needed, avoiding any debt. From there, she set up her website on WordPress, paid for social media ads, and invested in enough inventory to make 500 units of dry shampoo. Buying in bulk was key to her profit margin.

After researching the market of regular aerosol dry shampoos, and taking into account the elevated experience she hoped to provide, she set the price at $22 per unit.

Laura’s first sale was to her sister! But it was far from her last. Soon she was dedicating her weekends to making more product, rising early each morning to ship out packages, and sometimes even doing a second run to the post office late in the afternoon.

Her second product was another natural outgrowth of her own needs. Frustrated with how expensive and damaging most hair oil is, Laura again created her own version, and added it to her product line. This addition led to the formation of her Hair Kit, coming with dry shampoo, the application brush, and hair oil to take care of any mane from root to tip.

One year in, monthly profits range from $600 to $2,000, depending on the season and on what marketing experiment she’s trying that month.

For now, Laura continues to build and expand, investing much of the profits into growth. This side hustle is a mane attraction.

Boy Scout Merit Badge Leads to Leatherworking Lifestyle

What It’s About

A successful leatherworking hustle inspired by a former Boy Scout’s experience and love for his state.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Looking to do a similar hustle? Chris recommends finding “someone who can mentor you, both in the business aspects and the creative. Do an apprenticeship with someone who is doing what you want to do, and make sure it’s something you’re comfortable doing all day, everyday because it won’t be your hobby anymore.”

Fun Fact

Chris had to buy another wood lathe after his first one died in an electrical storm. Look out for hazards!

Notes from Chris

Episode 1089

Chris Cavallari has been making luxury pens and leather accessories since 2016. These pens are classy and handmade, carved from hardwood, with beautiful wavy designs in multiple colors. The leather accessories include cuff bracelets, wallets, and notebook covers. They’re tough and beautiful, looking like something a woodsman from Maine would carry.

As a longtime pen collector, at some point Chris got hooked on making his own. He didn’t plan to turn this into a business, or even a side hustle—at first he was just looking for a hobby.

For some reason, he thought he’d have more time to learn a new trade and revisit his love of leathermaking, in which he’d first earned a Boy Scout merit badge, just as his son was born. Maybe that was his first mistake… but fortunately it turned out well in the end.

He started with just $600. It covered the basic leatherworking tools, pen blanks, pen hardware kits, and a side of leather.

He sold his first pens to family members in January 2017, just a few months after he started producing stock. Chris’s mom used several of them as gifts for friends, who ended up ordering some of their own. Then, his wife brought some of his pens to work, and he got a few more orders.

The leatherworking happened in a similar fashion. Chris started by making products for himself, things he’d wanted to use. It began with a notebook cover. Then, when he needed a new wallet, he made one. People noticed, asked him where he got them, and he had himself more orders.

Although he hadn’t started with the intent to sell, there was a demand for what he was making. So he set up a store on Etsy, calling it The Acadian, and slowly began making sales to strangers.

From there, Chris set incremental goals for himself. The first was to earn $1,000 in a month. Then he upped that to $3,000. That’s how he approached everything: slow, gradual improvements rather than trying to find a secret growth hack.

In 2017, its first year, The Acadian made $4,000. Not bad for something that had just started as a hobby.

But the biggest change for The Acadian happened in January of 2019, when Chris was laid off from his day job. Suddenly, this thing that had been a hobby and a way to make extra money had become his only source of income.

It was time to get serious. Chris wasn’t a fan of the control that Etsy exerted over his platform, so he made his own store on Shopify.

He went from a narrow focus on pens and items he used himself to a broader offering. That scope includes belts, bracelets, money clips, combs, and more. All with the same careful attention to detail and rugged aesthetic as when the company started.

Remember how he made $4,000 in its first year? Now, in 2019, in its third year, he’s now set to make over $20,000.

But it’s about more than the money. At its core, The Acadian is a love letter to Maine and its rugged, adventurous culture.

Chris has big plans for 2020. Now that it’s his full-time gig, he’s going to give it the attention it deserves. He plans to work from a dedicated space, whether that’s renting a workshop or building one on his property. Next will be hiring an employee to help with processing large orders.

And it all started with a merit badge.
