Q&A: Can I get away without buying an SSL?

What It’s About

A listener seeks advice on whether or not they should pay for an SSL certificate for their website.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1435

Today we’re going to look at the exciting topic of SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) and its successor, TLS (Transport Layer Security). Doesn’t this sound thrilling?

When you go to a website, it begins with either HTTP or HTTPS. You may or may not notice that. But chances are, you’ve probably been to a site that gives you an ominous warning and asks “Are you sure you want to visit this site?”

This is what SSL is all about. You can purchase an SSL certificate that allows your site to avoid those warnings. But is it essential? That’s what our caller wants to know.

“Hello Chris this is Spencer I just started listening to the show and have been enjoying it. Here’s my question. I only recently learned that there’s a difference between a website that begins with HTTP and one that begins with HTTPS. Apparently the difference is about security, but it looks like it also costs money to add that “s” at the end. I’m worried about how this looks to potential buyers, but do I really need to pay more just so Google tells them my site is secure? It seems like a racket. What do you think? Looking forward to your response. “

Q&A: What kind of partnership agreement do I need?

What It’s About

A listener wants to partner with a local coffee company to create a branded blend. What kind of contract do they need?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1434

Today’s caller has a podcast. We’ve featured it before, it’s called Know Normal People.

He now has a creative idea to go along with this podcast: partnering with a local coffee shop to make a custom coffee blend. (Why is there no Side Hustle School coffee roast??)

He’s wondering about what kind of contract he needs for this partnership. I’m no lawyer, so I actually got some input on this question from a friend who does small business law. It’s a simple enough situation that a lot of people find themselves in, so I thought we should look at it here.

“Hi, Chris. Steven from Billings, Montana. Again, with my podcast, Know Normal People, I’m partnering with a local coffee shop to make a custom coffee roast with my podcast’s name on it. They will be selling it in their store alongside their other roasts. While I sell it on my Web site. We’re both entering into the agreement with big hopes, but I don’t want to let that excitement lull me into a mere handshake agreement. What type of agreement or contract is most appropriate for us to draw up and sign that will predict. All parties involved. What are good items to keep in mind when entering a mutual agreement like this? I want to make sure I own the recipe for the coffee blend itself in case we ever want to leave this roaster for another. I’m guessing this can simply be another line item in the contract, but I’d love some clarification. Thanks again, Chris, for all you do for the side hustle community. “

TBT: Family Affirmation Cards Go Global

What It’s About

An update from a company that lifts up kids and families through affirmation cards.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1433

Welcome to Throwback Thursday / “Where are they now?” where we take an in-depth look at someone who’s story has evolved considerably since we first featured them.

Last week we heard from a guy who turns upcycled grains from breweries into delicious snacks. Today, in our latest feature, we’ll hear from the co-founder of a Canadian business that is all about helping kids and families with self-worth.

Their original episode featured early in year two of the program was titled “Mindful Moms Make $70,000 on Family Affirmation Cards.” When two best friends are transformed by affirmations, they bring the love to families and children with empowering products.

Since then they have expanded far and wide, been mentioned by Jessica Alba and like so many others, have been navigating the COVID crisis this year.

This business is run by two people who do just about everything together. For this conversation, we focused on some comments from Lindy, but it’s very much Anna’s business as well.

Listen to today’s episode to hear Lindy and Anna’s updates…

MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:

  • Love Powered Co.: “I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and doggone it, people like me.” Okay, I definitely didn’t come up with that one… Learn more about Anna and Lindy’s self-love affirmation cards for “littles” over on their website!

Q&A: Help! I’m still overwhelmed with buying products on Alibaba

What It’s About

A listener seeks advice on how to buy products to resell from Alibaba.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1432

A recent Classroom episode covered the basics of buying products for resale on Alibaba—but this listener is still confused. Let’s clear up the confusion!

As a refresher, Alibaba is the largest marketplace in the world (yes, that includes Amazon!). You can find just about anything there, from big booty jeans to live sheep—we covered listings for both of those items and many more in the afore-mentioned Classroom episode, #1402.

In that episode I also talked briefly about Alibaba Express, and that’s part of this listener’s confusion.

“Hi Chris, this is Brian from Denver. I listened to an episode on sourcing products from Alibaba, and got really excited. But when I went to look at the site, I felt seriously overwhelmed. It seems like you can buy almost anything you can imagine, but there are thousands of sellers, and lots of confusing terms. You mentioned that Alibaba Express was more consumer-friendly with lower minimum order quantities—and the site does seem a lot easier to navigate. Is there a reason I should be looking at Alibaba.com instead of Alibaba Express? What’s the difference? Thanks “

Catholic School Teacher Resuscitates First Aid Courses

What It’s About

A teacher pumps life into First Aid and CPR certification training courses.

Words of Wisdom

Larry shares about the benefits of being passionate about your hustle “I took something I did exceptionally well as a hobby, and learned how to teach others to do it. This is vital because I seldom feel like I’m working, and people are more engaged by an enthusiastic provider.”

Fun Fact

Records indicate the first horse-drawn ambulances were used in 1487 by the Spanish, and a more common civilian ambulance rose to prominence during the 1830s.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1431
Larry Duffany has been a teacher for over thirty years, so long that educating is more a way of life than a job. It’s had its challenges but they weren’t enough to keep him from picking up a second job in his younger days. For that, he volunteered as an Emergency Medical Technician—known as an EMT—in his hometown. EMTs provide medical support, often as first responders who arrive on the scene by ambulance.

This job was perhaps even more challenging than teaching, but Larry loved it. It gave him an opportunity to help people. The only downside is that his pager would go off, sometimes late at night, and he would have to spring into action like a lifesaving defibrillator.

After several years of this, Larry was now newly married and decided to give up his EMT side work. But, as it turns out, the work never gave up on him … so after a ten-year absence, he decided to return.

To get back to his second job, he had to renew all of his First Aid and CPR certifications. He did that through a local ambulance department and was soon back volunteering for those in need. But the recertification process gave him pause.

He noted there seemed to be a real demand for high quality, First Aid and CPR training in his local community. Beyond that, the additional training he’d need to get certified as an instructor would be absolutely free. Over the next year, Larry leveled up to become an American Heart Association approved instructor, then, another year later, he achieved the qualifications to become an Emergency Medical Services instructor. In other words, Larry could now train people to do his job.

With a steady stream of customers, Larry next invested in his own equipment and soon was being seen by others as somewhat of a first aid expert. This happened both because of his association with the local ambulance service, and from others attending his courses.

The time hasn’t yet come for him to give up teaching at the school and go full time on teaching first aid. Although, he’s positive that day is coming.

CLASSROOM: Revisiting Key Lessons (Part I)

What It’s About

As we near the end of 2020 (phew!), let’s look back at some key lessons from previous Classoom episodes.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1430

Every other Monday, we look at a specific topic related to starting or growing your project. If you’d like to check out any of the archives, head over to the Classroom page:

https://sidehustleschool.com/classroom/

Today and two weeks from today, I thought we’d do a bit of a reflection on the year known as 2020. I don’t mean the year in general, but the Classroom series. My goal with this series was to complement the in-the-trenches stories with a number of more practical “go and do this” lessons for those who are just getting started.

We’re more than 1,400 episodes into the show now, and lots of people have joined in along the way. Others have come and gone, maybe focussing more or less on your side hustle depending on what else is going on your life. So when you need to do something specific, such as set up an affiliate program or review your offer before it goes out to everyone, or something else, you can get that info from this series.

So what have been a few highlights or key lessons, first from my perspective but more importantly from the perspective of our listeners?

Cardiologist Carves Out Bearable Sculptures

What It’s About

A doctor takes wood carving into his bear-hands and creates bear-y believable bear sculptures.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

James has a great thought regarding art-focused side hustles; “The goal of creating art isn’t to make money. But it’s very exciting when you realize that your passion and creative pursuits have value to other people.”

Fun Fact

One of the first chainsaw carving sculptures in Oregon was reportedly of Smokey the Bear and carved in 1960. This spawned a new artform and several years later, in 1987, the first chainsaw carving world championships were held.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1429
James Beckerman first moved to Portland, Oregon over fifteen years ago. Upon cruising the highways and visiting some nearby towns he noticed something quite unusual: there are a lot of carved wooden sculptures in the Beaver State.

These sculptures are created from large pieces of timber or logs and carved with a chainsaw. They depict various animals and characters, but the most common are … bears.

James was taken with the unique artform and, soon after setting up their new home, he surprised his wife with her very own ten-foot wooden bear. James presented it to her on their fifth wedding anniversary—known as the wood anniversary—but truth be told, he loved it a lot more than his wife, who found it a little unbearable.

James bought his own chainsaw and spent hours in the evening carving away and learning to make sculptures, especially bears. In a short period of time he developed techniques to carve more effectively. He also learned how to sand and stain his creations so that they looked more realistic and closer to the ones he’d seen around Oregon.

In fact: he had so many sculptures that they formed a bear-ier around his workspace. It was … em-bear-assing.

Like many artists before him, he turned to Etsy and launched his own store. He called it Boji Bear Carvings, the Boji part being named after his dog. His store would offer “custom chainsaw art with heart.” James envisioned clients giving him a brief of what they wanted, and he’d go away and create the exact wooden bear that their heart desired.

Although Boji wasn’t started to be a money-making exercise, James found that people were happy to pay him to create something special. He now receives commissions for all sorts of occasions, and yes, he’s able to ship these creations. The costs range from $200-1,000 depending on the size and other details. Just be patient … quality work requires for-bear-ence.

MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:

  • Try not to smile when you see James’s amazing wood sculptures at his website BojiBearCarvings.com.

Q&A: How to set up payment plans with auto-renewal?

What It’s About

A listener wants to set up a recurring revenue plan.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1428

Today’s caller is hoping to set up a service with a low service fee *and* a renewal payment every three months. Is there an easy way to do this?

Let’s also talk about why you might want to do this…

1. Recurring revenue is so important

2. This approach to generating subscribers is common for a good reason: it works! Or at least, it typically increases the conversion rate compared to not having the low introductory offer.

“Hey Chris, this is Ken from Fresno and I’ve been following your work since the $100 Startup. I’d like to offer a service that has a low signup fee, but then every three months it renews for another payment. My thought is that the low signup fee will encourage people to join without hesitating too much. Then, since they have three whole months before a renewal comes due, they won’t manually cancel the way they would for a more limited trial offer.

I’m wondering about the mechanics of how to offer this. How can I accept an initial payment and have the next charge (and all future charges) go through automatically? Thanks and I look forward to your response. “

Q&A: Should I use a service to promote my romance series?

What It’s About

A listener is in search of advice on how to promote her new book.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1427

We have a lot of authors and aspiring authors out there. One way or another, they’re all looking to get their books into the hands of more people.

I want to know the same thing! Sometimes a book takes off and sometimes it doesn’t. I’ve talked about The Money Tree a few times—that’s my newest book and with COVID it’s been tough to get out the message.

But hey, this isn’t about me! One of our callers is writing a romance series, and looking for promotional ideas. Specifically, she’s wondering if she should pay a service that markets ebooks to a large audience to promote her debut.

“Hi Chris, this is Megan and I’m writing a modern romance series, and want to promote it on Amazon. Where else should I be promoting it? I’ve heard about a service called Bookbub, that advertises ebook sales to millions of people. It’s expensive, and it looks like they don’t approve every request. But they also have a lot of success stories and positive testimonials. What do you think about this service, and what are some other ways to promote a new series? “
