Welcome to Side Hustle School. My name is Chris Guillebeau. Welcome as well to Throwback Thursday. This is a special segment. We also call it Where Are They Now?
Where we take an in-depth look at someone whose story has evolved considerably since we first featured them. Now we have had more than 1,400 episodes on the podcast, including more than 1,200 stories. And it's always fun to see, okay, what has happened? How has that person evolved? What lessons have they learned?
How has their business grown or not grown, whatever the case may be. We always wanna be very transparent. So last week we heard from a guy who turns upcycled grains from breweries into delicious snacks. He's actually doing really well. It's a full-time business now, multimillion dollar business, I believe.
And today in our latest feature, we'll hear from the co-founder of a Canadian business that it's all about helping kids and families with self-worth. And our original episode featured early in year two of the program. It was titled Mindful Moms Make $70,000 on Family Affirmation Cards. When two best friends are transformed by affirmations, they bring the love to families and kids with empowering products. Since then, they have expanded far and wide, shipping all over the world now, been mentioned by Jessica Alba, and like so many others, have been navigating the COVID crisis this year.
As mentioned, this business is run by two people who do just about everything together. For this conversation, we focused on some comments from Lindy. That's one of the two co-founders, but it's very much Anna's business as well, just to be clear. So what has happened since we first talked? Let's hear directly from Lindy, and I will come back at the end to wrap us up.

We are Lindy and Anna, and we were on episode 534, and we are Love Powered Co. Based out of Canada and Toronto mostly, but all across the country, and we are available all over the globe. Love Powered Co. is all about empowering the next generation of mindful leaders through the power of I AM. We make affirmations that are as beautiful as they are meaningful.
It's really the gateway into the world of personal development, into self-love, into positive self-talk, gratitude, and so much more. You guys interviewed us when we were very early in our business. We were super excited. We had just launched with one particular product, which was Love Powered Littles. And from there, it has just been an absolute whirlwind.
So we are now sold in about 15 countries across the globe. We have fulfillment centers in Canada, in the United States, and in Australia. And we have a ton of products available to really help build your self-worth. And we feature affirmations for littles, for teens, for women, and a series of other products as well. And it still feels like we are just a startup getting started, the sky's the limit.
We put almost everything into our online strategy since the beginning of our business, since we launched. And as you probably know, it's getting more and more competitive on Facebook and Instagram. And to reach our target consumer who happens to be the same target consumer for almost every company, it's getting very expensive. So it's really opened our eyes that we can't be looking for the ideal consumer in one place. We really need to focus on other strategies.
So we have started to build our retail game, and it's working out actually incredibly well. But that is a challenge that we are realizing we need to continue to learn and expand. I think that for us, when it also comes to the world of personal development and the world of affirmations and gratitude and all of the things that we preach within our products and within our marketing, it's really just living what you preach and reminding yourself of the reason why you're doing it and giving yourself an excuse to continue that practice and to continue growing in your spiritual psychology and your personal development. 'Cause there's that side of it. It's the business side of it.
And then it's the side of our business that is all about self-love and learning the power of positive self-talk and all of that magic. - Thank you so much, Lindy. And thank you so much to Anna as well. Now listeners, I wanna encourage you to take a look at their website because it's just really nice. Nice design.
They're using Shopify for e-commerce. So everything is just nice and smooth. This would be lovepoweredco.com. I believe you can go to lovepoweredco.ca as well if you're in Canada. Actually more on that in a moment.
But a couple of things I liked here. One, they have pivoted like so many others to doing some digital products. So they have digital box sets of these affirmation cards, but they're also kind of nudging people toward the physical set purchase. So to me at least, it seems like that's much more of their focus. And like when you go to buy the digital products, like for teens, for example, there's a little message that says, like, is this your first time seeing love powered teens?
We encourage you to take a peek at our physical box set. These cards are beautiful, durable, and a magical way for you to connect with your higher self while leaving your screens at the door. Click here to learn more. So it's like we have a digital product, but you may want to take a look at this physical one as well. Now here's an interesting trick.
I mentioned .ca for Canada. If you are in Canada or in another country, aside from the United States, but you have a lot of customers in the United States, then you sometimes have to navigate this issue of what do I do with my pricing? Like do I price in US dollars, which Americans are familiar with, or do I price in my local currency, or do I try to split the difference somehow? How can I not alienate people and make it as comfortable as possible? Because of course, that's going to increase your conversion rate.
So what they're doing here, I'm not sure if it's through Shopify or another plugin, but basically when you visit the site from the US, it's going to take you through the US process. When you visit the site from Canada, however, or in my case, I used a VPN to connect to a local Canadian network, just to kind of see what it looked like. Then you get the same version of the site, but the shipping address is set to go out to Canada and the pricing is automatically adjusted to Canadian dollars. So this used to be a pretty complicated thing to do, but these days it's gotten a lot simpler because of services like Shopify and various plugins and stuff, but not everybody's doing it. So if you're on that situation where you're selling to people in different countries, you should look into it because I think it can make a difference.
In any case, I am grateful to Lindy and Anna and the Love Powered Co. team for helping us out here.
