Q&A: Should I create a pre-order campaign for my book launch?

What It’s About

Today’s caller is seeking advice on how to launch their book. What should they know?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1519

I’m out of book launch mode for the moment, but usually, every eighteen months or so I gear up to publish a book that I’ve been working on for the previous year and a half.

Today’s listener from Boston is self-publishing a book on personal finance—and he’s wondering about the launch process. Should he make the book available for pre-order or just put it up for sale?

“Hi Chris, I’m Dailson from Boston, and I’ve been listening to your podcast for three months. Most people struggle with money, so I’ve started an online personal finance community. Those people make real progress with their money. Right now, I’m working on self-publishing a personal finance book that helps people change their money mindset so they can save more money, get out of debt and live a happy financial life. What are your thoughts, Chris? Should I make the book available for preorder or should I just pick a date and release the book? I recently read an article online that said most people avoid preordering books because there is no sense of urgency to purchase a book they cannot read yet. Thank you.”

Failure Friday: “We Accept Your Proposal… to Resign”

What It’s About

Our second Failure Friday segment features a blogger that began his journey after getting let go.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1518

I believe we can learn as much from failure as we can from success, if not more. It’s with this principle in mind that we’re starting Failure Friday, a collection of short stories all about mistakes, missteps, disasters, and of course, failure.

Just like our Throwback Thursday segment, you’ll hear directly from side hustlers who have struggled to get something off the ground. They’ll tell you a short story of something that went very wrong.

The stories will vary, but often it starts with an idea, what they thought would happen and what really happened—and of course, what they learned.

I applaud their courage! I’ll share some of my failure stories along the way as well.

Today’s short story features Sean Ogle from Portland, Oregon. He is no stranger to Side Hustle School listeners, as well as anyone who’s been following my work for a long time.

I wrote about Sean in The Art of Non-Conformity. But I don’t think I knew all these details including how he was effectively walked out of his office the day he left his job forever.

Q&A: How do you determine your customer’s emotional needs?

What It’s About

Today’s caller wants to learn more about how to analyze a customer’s emotional needs.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1516

Today’s listener is inspired to learn more about the “core emotional needs” of a potential customer, but isn’t sure how to do it or what to do with the info. Are these needs always the same, or do they vary?

I’ve been writing about this topic for quite a while. In The $100 Startup and Side Hustle, I went into it in some detail. It’s worth studying because if you have a good understanding of the emotional need that your product or service meets—and you go all-in with crafting your copy and other messaging around it—it can make a huge difference.

Let’s look at several examples in the answer to this listener’s question.

“Hi Chris, this is Luke from Portland. You often mention how important it is to be aware of a consumer’s “emotional needs.” This makes sense, but I’m not always sure what to do with it. How do I discover what those emotions are for a product? Or how about a service like bookkeeping? Are they always the same? Lastly, once I understand what the emotional needs are, how does that affect what I do next? Any help putting together the puzzle pieces would be appreciated.”

Photo Retoucher Strikes Gold with Etsy Shop

What It’s About

A personalized stationary store with a touch of gold.

Words of Wisdom

“Make products that you would want to use and build upon them” Patrina says. That’s exactly what she did.

Fun Fact

Patrina’s products have been featured in online publications including USA Today, HGTV, Women’s Health, FatFitFun, and House Beautiful.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1515
Several years ago, while searching for personalized stationery, Patrina Harris looked online but didn’t find anything that fit her modern style. A DIYer at heart, she decided to try experimenting with different paper types and foil to learn the process. Through a process of trial and error, she ended up something she liked.

After sending her personalized notecards and letterhead to friends and family, they first asked where she’d bought it. Then, when they learned she’d made it, they asked her to make some for them. That interest gave her the push she needed to start Patrina’s Paperie, an Etsy shop selling personalized foil-press stationery, printers, and stickers, in the spring of 2016.

One of her goals starting out was keeping her spending low as possible. When she began experimenting with stationery for her own use, she realized that the quality was inconsistent without the right materials and machinery, and those can add up quickly.

She already had a desktop computer and design software, but she needed to purchase a laser printer, foiling machine, paper cutters, and cardstock, which cost between $30 and $400. The total bill was under $1,000—and since her shop was on Etsy, she had to pay listing fees but didn’t need a web designer or website hosting.

From that ultra-frugal startup plan (still less than $1,000 a few years in), her monthly revenue is now between $10,000 and $13,000. Patrina attributes the success to a few different factors including her modern style, the quality of the products, and stellar customer service. Many customers tell her she provides a great product for a low price. That responsive customer service encourages repeat purchases.

In the near future, she’s looking to launch her own website. She’s also working on adding business cards and wedding invitation packages and hopes to sell eventually through brick and mortar stores, too.

This photo retoucher is turning what she touches into gold … gold foil, that is.

Q&A: Should I create a course on how to get out of a timeshare?

What It’s About

Today’s caller wants to help people break free of the shackles from their timeshare contract.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1514

Welcome to a new week!

Network marketing is at the top of the list of topics I know I can get a response from listeners about. Whenever I mention it (and I’m not a neutral voice—I’m saying don’t get into it, it won’t end well), I always get a lot of email.

But hey, if you have 20 free minutes, let me tell you about a wonderful opportunity….

What else is like network marketing? Timeshare properties!

Today’s listener has an idea to help people break free of the shackles that come with a timeshare contract. It is a captive market, but what can be done?

“Hey, Chris, it’s Karen calling in from Salt Lake City, Utah. I discovered your podcast a couple of months ago and have been working my way through all your episodes on my daily walks. So over nine million Americans own a timeshare, many of whom would love nothing more than to free themselves from the lifelong, ever increasing financial burden of ownership. However, the timeshare companies make this endeavor increasingly difficult. After relentlessly researching the topic, I was finally able to get rid of our family’s timeshare without using a realtor, attorney or timeshare company, and I didn’t have to ruin our credit either.

I was thinking of perhaps creating an online course to share what I learned throughout this process and to help others develop and execute a plan that works for their situation. Do you think that this is the best way to deliver this type of information, or should I be considering other avenues? How do I protect my content and how do I determine what to charge? Thank you again for your invaluable podcast. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on my idea.”

Dorm Room Side Hustle Grows Into Full Agency

What It’s About

A six-figure side hustle started live from a college dorm room.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Trevor shares some important nuggets, “Take action each and every single day. I applied to freelancing jobs like my life depended on it. This allowed me to figure out what I liked to do and didn’t.”

Fun Fact

A market research company valued the global podcasting industry at $9.28 billion in 2019 and said they expect it to grow at an annual rate of 27.5% between now and 2027.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1513
You know those cartoons where the character is running down a hill while what started as a tiny snowball rolls after him, growing bigger and bigger as it picks up steam? The snowball grows of its own accord, helped along only by gravity. Now, leaving aside the part at the end where the character ends up smooshed inside the giant snowball, arms and legs akimbo, a lot of side hustles have a similar trajectory. What starts as a small snowball can take on a life of its own, becoming less “side” hustle and more of, well, a main hustle.

Trevor Oldham’s story is just like that. Born of a desire for a job in college that allowed him to be his own boss, Trevor’s side hustle, Podcasting You, graduated to become his full-time job. He rolled that snowball down a hill and found himself at the bottom, owner of a small business that books podcast guests and brings in upwards of $15,000 a month.

One day he came across a listing on Upwork from a real estate investor in Los Angeles who was looking for help getting booked as a guest on podcasts as a way to promote her services. Trevor had booked guests for his own podcast, so he figured he could easily do the reverse.

He began to find more clients who needed help getting booked on podcasts, fielding calls in his dorm room in between classes (his clients at the time may not have realized how young Trevor actually was). Pretty quickly he realized that booking guests was more lucrative and less time consuming than the editing work he’d been doing. Podcasting You was born.

Trevor’s initial investment in his company was less expensive than a dorm room meal of instant ramen. He had no website, no inventory, no employees. Other than the time it took him to look for clients on Upwork, he spent exactly $0 getting started. Today Podcasting You brings in between $12,000 and $15,000 in revenue each month.

Q&A: How can I teach a Japanese chess game?

What It’s About

Today’s caller wants to teach others a Japanese game. Is this the right move?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1512

Have you heard of Shogi, also known as Japanese chess?

I have to confess I was not familiar with it until recently. Some of my enlightenment comes from one of our listeners, who is an avid fan and wants more people to know about it. If you’re into strategy, he says, Shogi is at least as interesting as classical chess.

Naturally, he’s also wondering about the side hustle opportunities for such a game. How can our listener advance his gaming cause while advancing himself at the same time?

“Hey Chris this is Kenny. Thanks for all the great side hustle stories. Online chess is huge, and so are a few other games like mahjong and Go. I don’t see as much for Shogi, however, the traditional strategy game that is sometimes called “Japanese chess.” It’s a fascinating game and I’d like to bring it to more people—but they tend to be intimidated by all the details and nuances.

My plan is to fix that, and offer free tutorials for beginners, with a soft upsell after the first lesson. How can I find a market of people who might be interested? I was thinking of starting with chess clubs or communities of tabletop gamers, but I’m sure there are other places I haven’t considered. What do you think?”
