I believe there are a lot of myths about social media. Today’s listener is going to help us crack open at least one of them—because they are not a fan of using social, at least for business.

The most common advice you tend to hear is “get on social and post all the time.” Well, maybe that’s good for some people, if you enjoy it and see a return from it. But if either of those characteristics aren’t met—might there be a better way?

Also, should our listener just suck it up and start posting… or should he devote his limited time and energy elsewhere?

“My side hustle is video production for high school athletic programs. My question is, is it possible to build a thriving business without harnessing social media? Currently, the videos I make are uploaded to one site where they take care of all the marketing and branding and I get paid a commission on every video that’s downloaded. I have recently started my own website so that I’m not dependent on another platform—and I want to grow. But I hate social media, at least when it comes to business promotion. How can I market without using Instagram or another big tech platform? “

Someone I admire a great deal has a new book coming very soon. Her name is Emily Rudow, and among other things, she set the women’s world record for most days running consecutive half-marathons.

I thought of Emily as I worked on this episode. In fact, I had to make sure the person calling wasn’t her, because our caller Rebecca has a similar spirit.

Today’s caller wants to—wait for it—run across the United States! What an incredible, audacious goal. But of course she needs funding, and she wants to think creatively. What are her options?

“I have a life goal that simultaneously excites and terrifies me: I’d like to run across the United States. I won’t be the first to do it—every year, about 10 other people join the list of finishers—but it’s a very short list and a long, difficult mission. I want to raise money for charity, but I also need my own funding. Do you know how I’d go about asking companies for support? In an ideal world, I wouldn’t just be looking for a handout, but a real partnership where they get some publicity and everyone wins.”

Last week, we heard from Regina Leeds, an actress who starred in many popular TV shows, including a recurring role on The Young and the Restless. She eventually left that career and became a professional organizer and author.

Today, in our latest feature, we’ll hear from a North Carolina orthodontist who invents a better way to treat impacted teeth. As he explains, people in his profession have used the same tool and method for a very long time—which would be great if it was effective, but it’s been painful and slow. He created a tool that is both less painful and faster, and business is booming.

I love hearing creative ideas! We recently heard from a listener who wants to get paid driving someone else’s car across the country. A lot of people actually do that through a variety of services, as I explained in that episode.

Today’s caller has an idea that’s very original—or at least, I’d never heard of it before. They’ll describe it in more detail, but in short: it’s a cross-country community road trip with dozens of people in their own cars.

Interesting, huh? But is it feasible, profitable, and urgent?

“I have an idea to create a road trip with dozens of vehicles that all travel together. It’s a communal adventure: groups of friends, couples, or solo travelers all drive from one stop to the next every day. They can make the trip in their own time and stop along the way wherever they want. Every evening, we gather for a shared meal that’s included as part of the experience. I don’t think there’s anything else like this out there—but maybe there’s a reason for that? I know you say that competition is a sign of market demand.”

If you’re a K through 12 teacher, the idea of making multiple six figures as an educator might sound impossible, but for Joanne Kaminiski this is her life. And she’s still pinching herself. Because it’s hard to believe, but the journey to get here was one that took her twelve years.

So how did she seize the day? To find out, we need to go back to school.

In 2010, Joanne left her long-standing job as a literacy teacher because she no longer wanted to work where she felt undervalued. She wanted more flexibility, more money, and it didn’t help that her job duties back then were 20% teaching-related (what she enjoyed) and 80% “everything else”—meetings, observations, and conferences, which contributed to stress as well as taking up so much time.

After walking away from the role, Joanne then made a number of earnest attempts at starting her own business before things started to pay off.

One night, lying in bed, her best idea yet popped into her head. “Maybe I can teach kids how to read online,” she recalls. No more eBay. No more jewelry. Back to her first love, teaching.

Now, this was the pre-Zoom era, before the days of widespread remote learning. In fact, the only common platform was Skype. Would the kids even be able to see the words on the screen? Joanne was skeptical. So she tested it out in her living room with two computers. It worked just fine!

To start, Joanne’s rate was $40 an hour. One that she believed to be a good one. It wasn’t long before a combination of bandit signs and good old fashioned word-of-mouth helped Joanne to completely book out her work week. So she raised her price. And, before she knew it, she was booked up again. So she raised her prices again. And again, until eventually her rate was $100 dollars an hour.

Before long, Joanne had another bright idea. “I should teach other teachers online to tutor their kids online!” Like a Russian doll, Joanne was able to spawn a side hustle within her side hustle. She called it Online Tutor Coach.

Today, Joanne spends half of her time coaching adults and the other half teaching children. She recalls one of her first adult students who ended up earning $30,000 in their first three months, a landmark that took Joanne almost a decade to achieve.

Today, Online Tutor Coach hasn’t stopped evolving. When imagining what it will become, Joanne’s description is reminiscent of one of her past missed steps: online travel teaching. Except this time it’s 2022 and technological advancements in virtual reality mean that this concept might be possible.

Anything is possible, with the right idea and the hard work it takes to bring that idea into reality.

With this specific product and a clear target market … she’s wondering what comes next. How can she reach that target market with her product?

You could do so many things, but our challenge in this world of unlimited choice is that you can’t do everything. That’s why having a plan is not just valuable, it’s critical.

“I need help prioritizing at the micro level. I’ve got all these things I need to do—specifically, I’ve made journals and a series of inspirational stickers and pins. People are buying them, and I convert more than 5% of the people who visit my site. I know I can sell more if I get more visitors. But I also struggle with knowing how to use my limited time. Newsletter? New products? Another Instagram post that will disappear in an hour? Okay, maybe not that, but still… there are a lot of options. How can I grow my following, grow the business, and do this all in a short period of time?”

Today’s question brings up one of my long-ago lifelong goals. I’ve previously mentioned how I really, really wanted to own a Mail Boxes Etc. franchise. Another thing I wanted to do was be an airline courier and/or get paid to drive other people’s cars across the United States.

Perhaps that dream started when I was a teenage runaway, heading for Arizona in a stolen Chevy Malibu. This is a true story—unfortunately I didn’t get far. The police authorities managed to convince my friend and I that “there is no Arizona” and my dreams were dashed against the rocks of a juvenile detention center in Huntsville, Alabama. Those were the days!

But let’s stay on topic with our listener’s question. Can you—in 2022—get paid to drive someone’s car across the country when they relocate? News at 10, and my answer in 30 seconds.

“I’ve heard you can get paid to drive someone’s car for them across the country, like when they’re relocating for work and don’t want to drive. Do you know anything about that? What other opportunities might there be, for example to start a competing service or even just a platform that connects movers with drivers? It seems like a problem that a lot of people face, or at least enough people that it could make for a good side hustle. Any advice is appreciated!”
