Q&A: “Can I get sponsors for a podcast that doesn’t exist?”

What It’s About

Today’s listener wants to know if they can presell their podcast idea.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1932

We’ve talked about how to get sponsors for a podcast—but what if the podcast is new and hasn’t released any episodes yet? Do you have to wait until you’ve built up an audience and then go to potential sponsors, or is there a way to effectively launch with sponsorship and therefore revenue?

This might be especially important for anyone creating a narrative-driven or storytelling series, as opposed to a traditional interview format.

But it really could be for any podcast—so is it possible? If so, how?

“I have an idea for a podcast and I’d like to pre-sell it to sponsors. My understanding is that podcasts attract advertisers as they get more popular—but mine hasn’t launched yet. Am I being greedy in thinking I can get financial commitments before the show is launched? Or am I being smart? It seems that some shows are able to do this, so I’d like to know what their secret is.”

Failure Friday: “I walked away at the last minute…”

What It’s About

This deal for a composting pick-up service wasn’t meant to be.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1931

I believe we can learn as much from failure as we can from success, if not more. It’s with this principle in mind that I offer you a weekly segment called Failure Friday: a collection of short stories all about mistakes, missteps, disasters, and of course, failure.

Just like our Throwback Thursday segment, you’ll hear directly from side hustlers who have struggled to get something off the ground. They’ll tell you a short story of something that went very wrong.

The stories will vary, but often it starts with an idea, what they thought would happen and what really happened—and of course, what they learned.

Today’s short story features Jen Panero from the Pennsylvania and Delaware area. She’s the owner of Wastewell, a curbside composting company that also provides educational resources. As you’ll hear, Jen had the opportunity to undertake a major contract with a municipal government. In fact, she committed to it!

But as the start date drew closer, she began having some real regrets. She’ll give us the story…

Q&A: “How do I choose a revenue model for my coaching business?”

What It’s About

Today’s caller wants to monetize their coaching practice.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1929

Most successful coaches have more than one source of income—but if you’re starting out and need to pick only one, which should you pursue?

That’s the topic of today’s listener question. It comes to us from a new coach who’s eager to jump in and is looking for direction.

“Most successful coaches have more than one source of income: they sell private coaching, of course, but also group coaching. Then, they usually have programs or other one-off educational resources for sale. Some of them also earn affiliate income and maybe some other things too. When you’re getting started, though, is it best to focus strictly on a single business model? Or is it wiser to diversify and build multiple programs at once? I don’t just mean “different business ideas,” I mean within the framework of coaching.”

Woodworking Dad Nets $2,000/Month

What It’s About

An HOA manager by day opens a moneymaking door at night.

Words of Wisdom

Gus shares his advice; “Try to specialize in fewer products versus saying yes to everything. In the world of woodworking, custom work takes lots of time. Consider offering a few things, with ‘custom’ modifications, so the client still feels like they have an opportunity to choose what they want but within the parameters that you offer.”

Fun Fact

The project that initially caught their friends’ eye was bunk beds Gus made for his sons. The bunk beds even have working lights and windows that open and close.

(To see the bunk beds, go to about minute 6 in this video: https://www.fox10phoenix.com/video/941955)

Notes from Chris

Episode 1928
Woodworking has always been a hobby for Gus Brown, who by day works in the business of homeowner association management (HOAs). He loves tinkering in the garage and building things. At age 11, he built wooden crossbows, but eventually stopped because his bows were so good they could be deadly. When he got married, he started building furniture for his wife and then their two sons.

After his wife posted a picture of one of his projects on Facebook, a friend of theirs asked if he’d be interested in paid woodworking projects. The friend’s husband had just become a firefighter and didn’t have time to do small projects for their business, which was called Twisted Vintage and had quite a following. Gus started contracting for them and they introduced him to the concept of installing glass in hollow core doors. He created his own system for these doors that worked well and allowed him to predict how long each project would take.

Gus’s work got a lot of attention for his friends’ business, but he wanted to go into business on his own. The friends had no objection, so he continued contracting for them while getting his own business off the ground in 2018. Woodtaneous—a portmanteau of the words spontaneous and wood—specializes in transforming boring hollow core interior doors by framing them up with a glass window, nice paint job and fun window decal. The decals are completely customizable with whatever font and words the customer wants.

Gus charges clients based on the height of the door. Once he knows the height and what type of paint job they’re interested in, he’ll quote them accordingly. The cheapest option, which includes having the customer do their own paint job, is around $400. Fancier options where he does the work go for $699.

If Gus is delivering or installing the door, he’ll take photos for social media (he’s active on Instagram and Facebook). But if the customer is picking up and self-installing, he asks them to take photos and share on social media. Facebook Marketplace and local TV spots have helped him get much of his business. Of course, excellent customer service and a quality product go a long way.

Three years since launch, Gus nets roughly $2,000 a month after taxes and supplies—and that’s working for an hour or two in the evenings after his kids go to bed. The side hustle provides a nice additional revenue stream for the family, especially because his wife homeschools and they rely solely on his income.

In the future, he hopes to branch out into other products and take his hustle full-time. He admits that door transformations are a niche market, so he says he needs to come up with a few more products to add to the mix so he’ll have enough business to pay the bills.

*Knock on wood* Here’s hoping the right doors will open up for this woodworking side hustler.

First $1,000: “I didn’t think of myself as an expert…”

What It’s About

A seller of bamboo baby products goes deep with Amazon.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1927

Today’s episode is part of a new feature we’re doing in 2022 called ‘Your First $1,000.’ As you might surmise from the title, this is all about how someone made their first $1,000.

How did they get to that point? Not their first $100,000—that’s cool, but it would probably be a long story.

One thing I’ve learned is that once you begin to earn real money, the steps required to go to the next level—whether it’s $1,000 to $2,000, or even to $5,000 or $10,000 are often easier than that first real paycheck.

With that in mind, today’s feature comes from Vicki Weinberg in the U.K. We first featured her bamboo baby products back on Episode #1520. As she worked more in that business, she began getting a lot of questions—not about bamboo baby products but more about how she sold on Amazon.

Vicki did a bit of a transition and now focuses more on guiding people through the process of Amazon selling, which as she explains can be quite complex.

Let’s hear more about that transition! Among other things, she has a really interesting perspective on being an expert.

Q&A: Best platform for handmade crochet items

What It’s About

Today’s listener wants advice on the best platform to sell her goods.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1926

A listener is ready to sell her handmade crochet items, including baby blankets and seasonal decorations. What’s the best platform for her—and does she need to make a website as well?

In this situation, what you’re often trying to do is not just get the information you need but also move beyond whatever resistance you’re experiencing as a result of so many options.

I hope I can help Donna, our caller, but maybe someone else out there as well. Just in case you don’t make handmade crochet items or just in case you aren’t wondering about a certain platform, how can you make these kinds of decisions for your side hustle or business idea?

“Hi, Chris, my name is Donna, and I’m from New York City. I’ve been listening to this show for a few months now. I’m thinking about starting a side hustle to sell my handmade crochet items such as hats, headbands, baby blankets and seasonal decorations. My question is how do I decide which platform is best to use to market and sell my products when there are so many options available? I started doing research and I’m getting slowed down with all of the information and weighing the pros and cons to sell items. There’s Etsy, Shopify and Instagram shops. Then I also need to create a website which comes with another set of options like Wix, WordPress, Squarespace. Most of these platforms have fees, and I don’t want to spend a lot of money trying them all out to see which one works best. With all of the options out there, I feel like I’m suffering from decision paralysis, and it’s holding me back from getting my side hustle started. I’d love to hear if other side hustlers have had this problem and what they did to get through it. Thanks. And I look forward to taking this next step so that I can finally launch my side hustle and start making some money. “

Q&A: “Can you really earn 150% interest through DeFi?”

What It’s About

Today’s caller is looking to cash in with decentralized finance, also known as DeFi.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1925

Over the past six months I’ve been on an adventure in decentralized finance, also known as DeFi. It’s been really interesting. I’ve learned all about staking, which is effectively depositing money in different digital currencies in exchange for rewards.

Usually with cryptocurrency or any other investment, your main hope is that the price of the token or security goes up over time. With staking, you still hope to see that price increase, but you’re also earning rewards every day in the form of interest. The interest is often very high, like 100% or more. This is not a joke!

Our listener wants to know how to get into this—so I’ll tell him!

It definitely involves some risk.

Also, there’s no product affiliation here–I’m just sharing my experience. You should always do your own research.

“I’ve been learning more about DeFi investing and have heard you mention it a few times as well, especially the part about “staking” your deposits to earn returns of 100% or more, sometimes even 150-200% or more. What’s the best way to get started? I don’t want to get scammed! But I also don’t want to miss out…”

Failure Friday: “I’ve never talked openly about what I’m working on…”

What It’s About

A recipe site founder reflects on a missing ingredient.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1924

I believe we can learn as much from failure as we can from success, if not more. It’s with this principle in mind that I offer you a weekly segment called Failure Friday: a collection of short stories all about mistakes, missteps, disasters, and of course, failure.

Just like our Throwback Thursday segment, you’ll hear directly from side hustlers who have struggled to get something off the ground. They’ll tell you a short story of something that went very wrong.

The stories will vary, but often it starts with an idea, what they thought would happen and what really happened—and of course, what they learned.

Today’s short story features Annie Singer. She’s the founder of Reciple.com, which offers ad-free recipes from small creators. If you try to use online recipes, you know it’s frustrating because those sites are typically cluttered with ads.

Annie also describes it as an equitable model—the first in this industry, in fact. The pitch to consumers is: “Reciple pays creators from your membership fee so that you can enjoy distraction-free cooking.”

It’s a very cool project, but as you’ll hear, Annie was reluctant to tell people about it. A previous project had flopped, which left her feeling intimidated and even shamed.

I relate to that, and I think it’s best for her to tell you the whole story.
