Q&A: “I tried donation-only yoga, but no one donated…”

What It’s About

Today’s caller needs to change their pose to make some real money.

Notes from Chris

Episode 2002

Today we hear from a yoga teacher who decides to offer a class at a nearby community center. It went well, except for one problem: she offered the class by donation, and guess what happened?

That’s right, it didn’t go well.

To avoid featuring her on Failure Friday, what can we do to turn this ship around? In situations where your primary or only means of payment is by donation, are there things you can do to increase those donations?

The good news and the answer is: absolutely!

Let’s get on the mat and work it out…

“I’m a yoga teacher and have been hosting a weekly yoga night at my local community center. I’ve done it for three weeks now, and last week more than fifteen people came. The class is donation-only, but this brings me to the problem: almost no one donates. In fact, in the first two classes, I had two people pay a small amount, but in the last class, no one did. I know that they could afford at least something, but I don’t want to be pushy. Is there a way to gently encourage more donations so that I’m not always teaching for free?”

What It’s About

We’ve all been there… making sure you get paid!

Notes from Chris

Episode 2001

I believe we can learn as much from failure as we can from success, if not more. It’s with this principle in mind that I offer you a weekly segment called Failure Friday: a collection of short stories all about mistakes, missteps, disasters, and of course, failure.

Just like our Throwback Thursday segment, you’ll hear directly from side hustlers who have struggled to get something off the ground. They’ll tell you a short story of something that went very wrong.

The stories will vary, but often it starts with an idea, what they thought would happen and what really happened—and of course, what they learned.

Today’s short story features Jessica Bonner, the owner of For Other Prizes, a tutoring business based in Birmingham, Alabama. All was going well until she received a frustrating chargeback after what she thought was a successful tutoring session with services rendered in full.

Let’s hear from Jessica about how that went down… I’ll be back at the end to wrap us up.

Side Hustle School Celebrates 2,000 Consecutive Episodes!

What It’s About

After 6 years and 2,000 consecutive episodes, we’re still hustling! Thanks for your support. 🙏

Notes from Chris

Episode 2000

2,000 Episodes!!

Well… somehow we made it! It’s true, we’ve been making Side Hustle School every single day since January 1, 2017. Thanks for tuning in! The best is yet to come.

In this short episode, I’m going to do some brief reflecting. I’ll keep it short because I want to keep the focus on you.

We have a lot of new listeners. And maybe you’re wondering, hey, what’s this all about?

Why I started SHS?

It all started with something I noticed in the summer of 2016. I’d been touring for a book that wasn’t really about entreprenuership at all. It just had one brief section about “starting a side hustle.” During my 20-minute talk that I would give before Q&A, I probably spent 40 seconds mentioning that before moving on to the rest of the book—but then, during Q&A, people always returned to it.

It was clear that a lot of people didn’t identify with startup culture, but still liked the idea of having extra money, building something on their own that didn’t necessarily have to scale.

I dug into that and ended up writing another book at the same time I developed this podcast behind the scenes.

In January 2017, we launched the show and it went to #2 on all of iTunes for several days. At the end of the year, I thought, well, let’s do it another year!

Q&A: “Can I offer a permanent price discount?”

What It’s About

Today’s listener wants to optimize the art of the sale. What should they know?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1999

You’ve probably seen furniture stores or other businesses that are always having sales. They have so many sales that it seems like there’s never a time when there’s not a sale.

And of course, this is a strategy! They know it works. They know it brings people in.

Our listener is wondering: why can’t they do this in their business?

Is there any reason to not have a permanent sale or price discount? What are the upsides and downsides?

“I’ve noticed that whenever I put my products on sale, I sell more. Not surprising, right? But a recent holiday sale got me thinking. Is there anything wrong with having my whole online store on sale all the time? I realize that recurring customers might catch on quickly, but I have a lot of new visitors coming every day. If it just so happened that what they wanted was on sale when they visited, I bet conversion rates would be higher. So that’s my question: is there any ethical or practical concern with having a semi-permanent or permanent sale?”

Hollywood Video Editor Shoots for the Stars

What It’s About

A hardworking Hollywood professional builds an empire from inexpensive Craigslist ads.

Words of Wisdom

Graham is a huge advocate for Craigslist advertising, “Make use of those $5/month Craigslist ads! I don’t know of a more cost-effective form of advertising.”

Fun Fact

Graham once did a project for the band Maroon 5. They had several hundred videotapes of behind the scenes footage they had shot over the years, and needed it all captured to a computer.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1998
Graham “Gray” Jones works as a TV editor/writer. Because that industry has so many ebbs and flows, he’s always filled in the gaps with side jobs, including building a stock footage library and getting sponsorships for his video podcasts. But in 2017 when he was invited to shoot a music festival, he started thinking bigger.

Although he had a lot of gear already, he didn’t have everything he needed, so he rented it from a peer-to-peer equipment camera sharing platform called ShareGrid.

That experience made him realize he could be renting out his own gear when he wasn’t using it, so he immediately listed everything he had and started making $1,500/month. He reinvested earnings to build a bigger rental catalog, and got it as high as $3,500/month before COVID hit.

In addition to bringing in revenue, the rentals also allowed Gray to be more aggressive in pursuing jobs that needed a lot of specialized equipment, because he knew whatever he bought could be rented out to offset the purchase price.

Buying and selling camera equipment has also been lucrative. In fact, Gray made about $30,000 last year just on the buying and selling through a mix of eBay, Craigslist and ShareGrid, the website that started these hustles.

So far, Gray’s biggest catch was a $140,000 job with an educational foundation for billionaire Michael Milken. The foundation had 14,000 videotapes (appropriately fifteen tons of tapes) that needed to be imported.

By capturing from nineteen machines at once, Gray and a small team were able to deliver it in ten weeks. Even the most established transfer companies would take a year or more for that amount of video, so he feels that speed is what’s helped him succeed in that niche. He celebrated the six-figure project with a week-long vacation in Disneyland and a weekend in wine country.

When Gray saw how much success he had renting out camera equipment on ShareGrid, he and his wife started renting their minivan through the peer-to-peer car rental site Turo. In the first two weeks of signing up, they booked $3,000 of rentals. They plan to reinvest their earnings to buy more vehicles and gradually build a fleet.

Finally, because two multi-six figure side hustles isn’t enough, he’s also in talks to buy a competing well-established audio/video transfer company.

First $1,000: “No one in Boston could find a good pierogi…”

What It’s About

How two sisters made bread sharing their families heritage and recipes.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1997

Today’s episode is part of a new feature we’re doing in 2022 called ‘Your First $1,000.’ As you might surmise from the title, this is all about how someone made their first $1,000.

How did they get to that point? Not their first $100,000—that’s cool, but it would probably be a long story.

One thing I’ve learned is that once you begin to earn real money, the steps required to go to the next level—whether it’s $1,000 to $2,000, or even to $5,000 or $10,000 are often easier than that first real paycheck.

With that in mind, today’s feature comes from Casey White in Massachusetts. This is a tag-team project, together with her sister. Their background is Polish, and they’d noticed that there was no where in the Boston area to get decent pierogi.

We first featured them back on Episode #1137: Polish-American Sisters Cook Up Pierogi Profits. But what about their first $1,000—how did they make that happen, what did it feel like, and what did they learn?

Listen to today’s episode to learn more…

MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:

  • Thanks to Casey for telling us about her first $1,000. I hope you found it encouraging. Check out their website, JajuPierogi.com. Jaju is grandfather in Polish. If you’re in the New England area—500 grocery stores!

Q&A: “I’m being headhunted… for my side hustle!”

What It’s About

Today’s caller is being sought after for their hustle. What should they do?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1996

Very interesting question today—definitely not one we’ve had before. Our listener made a coding test for programmers, and it got a lot of attention… as well as a job offer!

As you’ll hear, this wasn’t really the objective, so what should they do? They’re also looking for general advice on the project they’ve made, so I’ll do my best.

“While I was working in IT, I developed a simple coding test to measure the abilities of junior programmers. I didn’t do this for my job; it was just a hobby I started working on for myself. Along the way I realized I could sell it, so I created the MVP and posted on Hacker News.

The response wasn’t gangbusters, but it was favorable. Weirdly, however, a company reached out that wants to interview me—I didn’t even apply!

I’m going to talk to them because I figure no harm can come from that, even though I probably don’t want a new job. I just thought I’d share this story and ask if you’ve heard about it happening with anyone else? Also, what’s your #1 tip to grow the side project based on what you’ve heard so far?”

Let’s talk today about the power of thinking small!

Today’s caller draws on a lot of experience in production, branding, and more. She now wants to strike out on her own, but feels overwhelmed by all the options. Can we help her find the right focus?

“Hi, Chris, this is Sheri from Vancouver, Canada. I’m a longtime fan of yours, and I’m grateful for all the amazing and informative content you put out there for entrepreneurs like me. Failure Friday: “We tried to be everything to everyone…”

What It’s About

A longtime business owner cleans up his priorities.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1994

The stories will vary, but often it starts with an idea, what they thought would happen and what really happened—and of course, what they learned.

Today’s short story features Brian Winch, founder of Cleanlots. He’s been operating this litter removal business for a long time—more than forty years, to be precise. As he explains in his update, it started as a hustle but quickly took over and turned into a livelihood.

Shortly afterwards, he made (by his own admission) a big mistake that hindered the business for several years. Fortunately, he eventually found his way out and learned a valuable lesson along the way.

Episode 1993

Welcome to Throwback Thursday / “Where are they now?” where we take an in-depth look at someone who’s story has evolved considerably since we first featured them.

Today, in our latest feature, we’ll hear from Sandeep Rajmandari in San Francisco. We first featured him on episode 935: Meal Prep Company Cooks up Profits with Customized Orders. He and a couple of partners turned $2,000 into $2 million in less than five years. As you’ll hear in this update, Sandeep runs the show on his own now.

Let’s hear about that as well as a few other updates from him. I’ll be back at the end to wrap us up.
