Lawyer Moonlights as Needle-Felt Children’s Book Author

What It’s About

Twin brothers think outside of the box, discover needle-felting, and create something wool-thy of standing out.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Holman and Jack’s story is a perfect example of why you don’t need to get a platform in order to score a book deal. A great idea is still valuable, and content matters most of all!

Fun Fact

Sometimes the books will take several seasons to create. Holman will wait to frame his shot for a book for the perfect season. For Star Wars, he staged some of the scenes and photographed them in British Columbia winter, and then again in spring. And for the desert scenes, he actually flew to California to set the stage in the sand dunes.

Notes from Chris

Episode 866

Twin brothers Holman and Jack Wang spent part of their childhood writing and illustrating books … just for fun. As the years progressed and their studies turned into full-time careers in Law and Teaching, they brushed aside their artistic interests. But then, much later in life the two brothers found themselves reminiscing about their lost art. They wanted to find a way to revisit it.

It was Jack who came up with the idea for creating Cozy Classics: a series of books that used primers to tell abridged versions of literary classics like Pride and Prejudice and Moby Dick. Holman loved the idea but there was one problem—neither one of them had done any type of drawing or painting in nearly 20 years. So while the idea was there, he didn’t see how they could compete with professionally trained digital artists. They had to think outside of the box and create something worthy of standing out.

Holman then floated the concept of needle-felting figures and photographing them in various scenes for the illustrations. He had heard of this medium before but had never tried it. So he decided to consult the number one tool for learning new skills: YouTube. He watched several videos on the technique of needle-felting and essentially taught himself how to do it.

Needle felting involves taking loose wool and repeatedly stabbing it with a specialized barbed or notched needle. The movement of stabbing the wool entangles the loose fibers allowing the wool to get denser and eventually turns it into felt. As the wool is felted, it begins to take some structure so you can sculpt shapes. Sounds easy, right? (It actually sounds hard to me.)

It took several months to stitch together the first book. Each wool figure took anywhere from 20 to 40 hours to create, and the process for styling and photographing each scene required 4 to 6 months.

They had met with one publisher through a friend of a friend who loved the concept, but didn’t think they would go over well by doing literary classics. The publisher wanted them to alter their vision and change it from “Pride and Prejudice” to “The Adventures of Lizzie and Darcy”. Holman and Jack were not willing to compromise their vision and turned down their first offer. They eventually found another publisher who bought into their original vision. That’s when their first two books were picked up and published.

So just how wool-thy has this 9-year side hustle become? Since launching Cozy Classics in 2010, they’ve earned more than six figures from book sales and royalties and speaking engagements. While the amount varies from year to year, they are currently averaging about $25 to 30,000 dollars annually.

Aside from the book sales, Holman has been invited to speak at many events that include presentations showing kids how to create needle-felt figurines. With needle and felt in hand, Holman and Jack are sure to stab their way to continued success.

Jealous Designer Starts Popular Art Blog

What It’s About

A designer spins jealousy into opportunity sharing the work of others!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Each time Danielle shared someone’s work, they’d share her write up with their own audience. And then some of those people would subscribe and become regular readers of The Jealous Curator. For many, it was a great way to get exposure to interesting up and comers in the art scene.

In this way, she started to grow quite a following, and it’s a great method for growing a community!

Fun Fact

There are lots of successful blogs out there that have built a huge following by curating lists of things they’ve found online, and it doesn’t have to be art. Sites like ThisIsWhyImBroke have amassed hundreds of thousands of followers posting about cool gadgets for example.

Notes from Chris

Episode 818

No doubt you’ve heard the story of “the starving artist”. When someone loves the work so much, they’ll do it despite financial hardship. Well, Danielle Krysa of British Columbia wasn’t starving in the traditional sense, but she was eager to do something more with art. She’d always had a creative streak and hoped that one day she’d be able to craft a career around her talents.

But it can be tough to make money as a creative. On top of that, art is often quite subjective. The outside world determines if what you’ve built is valuable or not, and some of the most famous artists in history were only appreciated after their time.

So, like many before her, Danielle hung up her smock and took the “professional route” of the freelance graphic designer. Instead of creating art for art’s sake, she began helping others realize their dreams.

But she didn’t always enjoy it. Although it paid the bills for many years, her heart had an artistic void that no amount of invoicing clients could fill.

The worst thing was that Danielle began to get bitter. She’d look at an artist’s success and be overcome with jealousy. She’d pour so much time into comparing herself to other artists that she had no energy left for her own work.

Not wanting to paint herself into a corner, she decided to turn her jealousy into something positive. In the throws of her artistic pining, Danielle had started following some rather successful blogs on art. While some were posting artwork that was unique to them, many were actually passing the easel off to others, highlighting their work instead.

This concept appealed to Danielle! After some initial reluctance, she rolled up her sleeves and got to work. In the beginning, the blog was merely a blank canvas—there was no creative plan or grand vision for it. Her goal was to showcase the work of other artists—the ones who braved the unpredictability of the art world. The ones she was jealous of.

Just like that, the name of the blog wrote itself: “The Jealous Curator”. And since envy was the topic of the day, she even added a fun little tagline to go with it: “I Wish I’d Thought Of That.”

In no time at all, the blank canvas began to fill with color. If she stumbled across an artist’s work she admired, she’d write a few words about it and publish it on the blog. Afterward, she’d reach out to the artist to let them know that they’d been featured.

Although she didn’t realize it at the time, this small piece of outreach enabled her to build a community. Each time she shared someone’s work, they’d share her writeup with their own audience. And then some of those people would subscribe and become regular readers of The Jealous Curator. In this way, she started to grow quite a following.

This community building technique worked well, and her readership grew by leaps and bounds, eventually reaching more than 250,000 Facebook fans and 180,000 on Instagram.

At that stage, only one thing was missing: monetization. Danielle was now an artist in her own unique way, but she was still a struggling artist since she wasn’t getting paid for it. She didn’t want to run ads on the website even after building enough traffic to make it worthwhile. She felt that it would take away from the aesthetic that she had created.

Although Danielle was still working as a freelance graphic designer, several opportunities came her way because of the blog and the huge community of envious art lovers she had grown. She was offered a book deal to write about the dreaded “creative block” that often keeps artists from creating. True to form, she interviewed 50 other artists to weigh in on their tips and tricks for conquering it as well.

That book led to two others through the same publisher, and she began receiving speaking opportunities to share her unique insights with others. She was featured on podcasts like Being Boss and even landed a spot on Oprah’s show and magazine.

Through the books and speaking opportunities, she was beginning to get paid. The money was still such a by-product of enjoying herself that she didn’t even keep track of it. In fact, it wasn’t until Danielle and her husband were doing their taxes in 2016 that she realized that she’d made $40,000 from things related to The Jealous Curator that year.

That number was all the proof she needed to go full-time.

Since making that decision three years ago, Danielle has written another book and significantly increased the number of speaking engagements she makes. There have been so many opportunities that she’s managed to triple her income and has no plans to slow down.

For Danielle, 2019 is all about two things. She’s pitching a kids book and focusing on her own collage-based artwork with a solo show coming up in Toronto. And of course, through all of that, she’ll still be posting daily to The Jealous Curator.

The 50 Shades of Editing Romance Novels

What It’s About

A steamy side hustle editing romance novels.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Jessica reflects that the desire to learn, professionalism, strong networking skills, and authentic marketing are all vital to building and maintaining a client base. Perfectionism, timeliness, communication skills, and project management are also necessary skills for all editors.

Fun Fact

Romance novel sales total more than a billion dollars a year. They sell as much as sci-fi, mystery, and fantasy combined. More than 70 million people in the USA alone read at least one romance novel per year, and most of them read many more.

Notes from Chris

Episode 808
We sometimes assume that being in the right place at the right time is all luck. Today’s side hustler, Jessica Snyder, encountered some serendipitous opportunities, but she also played an active role, putting herself in a position to take advantage of those opportunities.

Jessica has been a corporate recruiter for over a decade, but her true passion is passion—in the form of romance novels. A voracious reader, she never considered that “books” could be a career for anyone other than authors. She knew that writing wasn’t the right fit for her, but she was always happy to help a friend work through plot issues or proofread a classmate’s research paper.

In 2012, Jessica’s long-standing love of romance novels led her to attend a romance writers conference. She discovered a whole industry of professionals she never knew existed—editors, agents, and publicists, among others.

In a true moment of luck, Jessica won a prize at the conference that included breakfast with an editing team from a well-known publishing house. She took advantage of the opportunity to ask how they had started their jobs and what the requirements were to be an editor or proofreader or anything that would help get her foot in the door. One of their suggestions was to start following agents and editors on Twitter, so that’s what she did.

A few months later, Jessica noticed a tweet calling for interns at a publishing house for romance fiction. She expressed her interest with a direct message to the senior editor, and they chatted online briefly. A couple of weeks later, she was officially an unpaid intern. At the time, it felt like the best. job. EVER!

While continuing to work full time, Jessica soaked up expertise from her part-time, unpaid internship. She learned to analyze manuscripts for what the market supported rather than her personal preferences, and what in a “not perfect” manuscript could be salvaged or improved—like structure and conflict—and what was harder to “fix”—like voice or lack of storytelling ability.

After six months, the publishing company promoted Jessica to Editorial Assistant, where she received a modest side income and continued to hone her skills.

Eventually, Jessica decided to start freelance editing on her own. She got her first client by referral.

For a while, Jessica juggled both freelancing and her part-time projects with the publisher, alongside her day job. In her first year, two clients brought her multiple projects, bringing in $1,400 in revenue.

Projects due to her publisher always took precedence over her hustle to find new clients, so after a year, she opted to resign from the publishing house. This allowed her to add more freelance clients, with revenue increasing to $7,700 in the second year and $15,000 in the third year (2018).

Editing projects are highly time intensive, and Jessica has to live by her color-coded calendar with constant reminders of what she has to do next. She says she doesn’t love scheduling every hour of her day, but she’s willing to do it for the right projects.

The temporary sacrifice is worthwhile because, as it turns out, Jessica has fallen passionately in love with her side hustle and hopes to pursue it for the rest of her life. She plans to transition from recruiting to full-time editing and author coaching. When that day comes, she’ll pack up her computer and her dog, and head off into the sunset to travel the world.

What It’s About

A Google Suite alternative that lets you work anywhere without worrying about your data.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Justin says that no one is going to come to you and tell you that it’s ok to build the thing you want to build. If you don’t know how to do it, use your motivation to build it as the thing that drives you to learn. But no matter what, the first step is starting.

Fun Fact

Blockstack runs an App Mining program that aims to distribute 100K monthly to the best apps that use Blockstack integration, with the stated aim of helping to fund the pioneers of the decentralized internet. Makes you wonder—are there any programs in your niche that rewards you for being good at what you do?

Notes from Chris

Episode 775

Justin Hunter didn’t plan on becoming a coder. An account manager by day and writer by night, he was also enrolled in a Master of Fine Arts program pursuing creative writing. As the program was winding down, Justin noticed that he had built up quite a body of work. This made him nervous as he had stored his creative work on Google Docs, and he was worried that he could be locked out one day.

Justin considered going back to Microsoft Office and storing files locally on his computer but decided that wasn’t a great option either.

Like many of us, he’d grown accustomed to the convenience that cloud-based storage offered. He looked around for alternatives to G Suite that would allow him to own his own data but realized that no such software existed. That was when he decided that he would build an app for his own personal use.

Most creative writers don’t set out to do such things, but Justin had been honing his programming skills for a while. Twenty years earlier, he had taken a computer class in middle school. Although he was amazed by the wonders of programming, he never seriously pursued it. Much later, when he decided to build an in-browser game for his son, coding began to make more sense. Justin was motivated by this sudden breakthrough, and he began to experiment by building small apps. He had put himself in a perfect position to start his side hustle.

In the summer of 2017, he created the first version of a product he called Graphite. Justin had chanced upon Blockstack, an app protocol which allows developers the ability to build apps where users own their data. Up till this point, Justin had never entertained the thought of Graphite being used by anyone other than himself. There was no bigger purpose or a grand plan at all.

But as he built Graphite and shared each iteration with the Blockstack community, people in that community noticed. They encouraged him to continue building and to release it publicly. This was the first hint that anyone else would actually be interested in it.

In March 2018, Justin launched Graphite publicly. At this point, the app was free for all to use. A key issue was figuring out how to get customers to pay. Eventually, he designed a form of team-based collaboration into the decentralized app, allowing users to securely and conveniently collaborate across an entire organization. Unlike G Suite, Graphite allowed people to easily encrypt and share files with an entire team.

As his product gained popularity, Graphite gained more paying customers. The revenue generated from these customers were still fairly small, but because of how well the product had been designed, Graphite consistently garnered top ratings and reviews from users. This made the product eligible for the Blockstack App Mining program. Funded by Blockstack, a company which aims to build an open-source and decentralized internet, the App Mining program rewards the best app developers… and for Justin, he’s now earning an average of $12,500 in monthly payouts.

Moving forward, Justin hopes this will eventually become a project he can work full-time on. To those who wish to do something similar, Justin’s advice is to remember that no one is going to tell you that it’s okay to build something, or that you should build something. You just need to decide for yourself—and then, you need to do something about it.

“Middle Class Dad” Earns Passive Income from Parenting Advice

What It’s About

Rest your arms, we won’t leave you hangin’—today’s story is all about a dad who specializes in parenting.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Suggestion: pay close attention to what is working and what isn’t. If something is working and it’s not annoying, great! Do more of that. If it’s not working and it’s annoying, remove it. If it’s working and it’s annoying, then you have a decision to make, and I think it’s okay to push it a little.

Fun Fact

Interestingly, Middle Class Dad readers tend to be about 65% women between ages 25-45, which isn’t always indicative of his popular posts. One of them? Window repairs. Lately, Jeff says that relationship posts, like the ones about rekindling marriage and overcoming infidelity, have started to take over his top ten. But generally? Middle Class Dad’s most popular categories tend to be relationships and do-it-yourself.

Notes from Chris

Episode 718
Jeff Campbell, an Academy Director for a martial arts studio in Austin, spends a lot of time with kids. His days are spent organizing 500 of them, and his nights are dedicated to his three almost-teenage daughters. He also is a self-described handyman around the house and an advocate for healthy eating. Before getting the job at the studio, he spent 25 years working as a manager for Whole Foods. Jeff describes himself as “just your average, Middle Class Dad.”

And now he blogs about it.

He started his blog in August 2016 as an outlet for all things “dad-related,” which includes parenting (obviously), relationships, personal finance, travel, and household things like product reviews and home repairs. Jeff had decades of experience to share, and he knew his wife would only listen to so many of his opinions. But he also set out with the intention of looking for more freedom and flexibility for his family.

As he says, “I was tired of trading my time for money, given that some people can accomplish much more in the same amount of time than others.” Jeff knew that wherever the blog went, his end goal was to monetize it.

How would he do that? Mostly through affiliate commissions.

Since his overarching goal was to monetize his blog so he could have extra money for his family, Jeff began to add affiliate links once his page views began increasing. As he tells us, “I still recall the first few email subscribers I got, as well as the first affiliate commission. Both were quite small, but I knew if I could do that once, I could do it again and again.”

Jeff also knew that, with careful observation, he could pay attention to other people’s blogs and learn from them. And, while it took about two years to see consistent income and growth, it did eventually happen.

Now, two years later, Jeff earns an additional $2,000 a month, which he adds to the family budget to cover the costs of raising a family. The money on Middle Class Dad comes from Adsense ads and Amazon affiliate links. Last year he started to sell an e-book about budgeting for parents, and offers custom budgets and website building. Jeff says that these sales aren’t usually as consistent, but they still bring in a small amount of revenue.

From one faithful reader to 25,000 unique page views in two years, Jeff has built the Middle Class Dad blog into one serious side hustle. With plans to continue growing his blog so that the income can replace his full-time salary, it looks like Jeff won’t be stopping anytime soon.

MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:

  • Middle Class Dad: Do you want to hear a joke about paper? Never mind, it’s tearable. But, since you’re here, and you’ve made it past the dad joke, you probably want to know more about this parenting blog. Head on over to Jeff’s website to learn more!

Snack-Sized Business News for Millennials

What It’s About

Bite-sized business news for those always on the go!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

What is the key to making something like this work? In Nick and Jack’s case, a distinctive voice, a clear target market, and of course, consistency. It’s a winning combination!

Fun Fact

While pumping out content on a daily basis is not especially common, Nick and Jack haven’t missed a day of news for MarketSnacks since they first launched in 2012.

Notes from Chris

Episode 716

A lot of business news just isn’t appealing to younger readers. Bloomberg has been having a hard time getting millennials to read its website. Fidelity Investments couldn’t get them to understand all the financial lingo. The Wall Street Journal can seem like an old-fashioned club that only the elite belong to.

Even as professionals in the world of finance, Nicolas Martell and his roommate, Jack Kramer, didn’t enjoy reading up on the latest news—but they didn’t have a choice. Keeping up with developments was important in their banking jobs.

One day the two met up at Old Town Bar in New York before walking back to the apartment. They talked stocks, economics, spreadsheets—the usual—but they also dreamed of a project. What if they created a business news media company that could be understood by millennials?

Nobody had easily-digestible market news. They knew they could make such a thing, and they called it MarketSnacks.

Their plan was to publish a blog with daily news stories that were relevant and understandable. All they needed was a simple website and an email provider, so the monetary startup costs were almost non-existent. And in just a couple weeks, MarketSnacks came to life.

But the hustle did cost a lot to start … in time. Nick and Jack blocked off multiple hours before and after their day jobs to plan, write, edit, and publish content. It was an intensive project—and it required their focus every day.

The work paid off. In just a few weeks, MarketSnacks had a couple hundred daily readers. The idea was being validated with each new visitor to the site who turned into a regular reader.

MarketSnacks has evolved a lot over the years. In 2017 the duo launched a podcast, in early 2018 they raised outside funding, and later in the year they became full-time content creators.

With the sponsors they have, they’re making a lot of money. But according to Nick, the money’s not the best part—otherwise he wouldn’t have done it for nearly three years without pay.

The greatest rewards are the 5-star podcast reviews and email testimonials that indicate MarketSnacks is successful helping a generation understand business and finance news in a way that’s never been done before. Hustling in the dream job full-time—well, that’s a nice perk, too.

Movie Editor Turns 19th Century Art Into Full-Time Job

What It’s About

Witty and socially relevant “old-timey” comics!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

To choose his merchandise, David relies a lot on gut instincts. If people like his comics, he figures, they shared common ground with him and may find similar products and ideas interesting. But he is still always sure to test new items before printing them in large quantities.

Fun Fact

David was really careful to slowly phase out his day-job, opting for a freelance position for nine months one year, six months the next, and three months the year after!

Notes from Chris

Episode 710

For movie trailer editor David Malki !—who’s name is legally spelled with an unpronounced exclamation point at the end—creating comics was a fun way to keep himself entertained between projects. David loved pulling 19th-century illustrations from books in the public library, or his own rare collection, and re-contextualizing them with modern-day references. He’d scan the images into his computer, upload them to Adobe Photoshop, and add funny passages.

David mostly saw this as a labor of love. He’d upload the comic to his website, Wondermark, and share them with whoever cared to read. He did this mostly by taking part in discussions in webcomic forums and on message boards. This was back in 2003, so it was way before Facebook groups and Twitter threads.

Over time, David and his comics began to build a following. People would comment on his work and share it with their friends. The more he created, the better he got, and the more people reacted to what he was making. As David’s audience grew, so did his desire to turn Wondermark into a business. He’d seen a few other creators making a comfortable living from their comic creations, and felt he’d like to be able to do the same.

To see if Wondermark had the chops to survive on its own, David devised a test. He created a handful of print books to sell to his colleagues at his advertising agency. He printed 60 copies for $8 each, and then sold them for $15 each.

If he could pitch them on it, well, he just might have a legit business on his hands. And, much to his delight, 48 of the 49 other employees did! The only outlier being one grumpy producer who didn’t “get it.”

This small initial success gave David the confidence to look at selling products on a wider scale. But, as is David’s ethos, he continued with more tests.

Over the next few years, he carried on in a similar fashion. He created comics during his evenings and weekends and attended events and conventions whenever he was able to. They were few and far between, so luckily, it didn’t interfere with his day job. Every new convention meant he’d try a new product; creating small runs of stickers and t-shirts, seeing if they’d sell, and ordering more of the products which worked well. Working part-time, in just a few years David was earning enough to quit his job and focus on Wondermark full-time.

The landscape of the webcomics industry has changed over the last few years, and David is now able to make money online between events, thanks to e-commerce and Patreon, where he currently receives $869 a month from 212 supporters or patrons. He also runs three e-commerce stores which are connected to Wondermark. The backbone of these stores is print-on-demand, where t-shirts and mugs and other products are printed and fulfilled by third-party companies like T-Shirt Diplomacy, with David’s designs on them.

Looking to the future, David isn’t quite sure what he’s going to do. He’s always testing and trying new ideas to see what will work out for him, but he’s also open to the possibility of using the skills he’s learned to go back to the working world and help other companies out. Either way, he wants to keep being creative and connecting with people.

Art School Model Starts Sexually Stimulating Side Hustle

What It’s About

Let’s talk about… one blogger takes her passion to the next level.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Cy says it’s important to come up with an elevator pitch for why you’re blogging, what your blog will be, and how it will help people. Anybody can get started blogging, but in a broad niche, it helps to be crystal-clear about what will make you stand out.

Fun Fact

Cy’s blog has won some accolades over the years, and was recently named one of Kinkly’s top 10 LGBTQ blogs.

Notes from Chris

Episode 693

Sexual positivity is a crucial part of who Cy is.

She started her first ever sex blog while still in high school; a Tumblr page called Smash Cache where she could reblog all of the erotic content she was reading.

The more she read, the more she felt compelled to tell her story and leave the curated content behind. So, in 2016, alongside studying for her biology degree, Cy evolved her blog into Super Smash Cache and created a free WordPress-hosted website.

This would be a fresh canvas where she could review sex toys, share a body positive message, and discuss taboo subjects which would probably get her banned from Facebook.

Cy posted a lot of content on the blog, but the content she was the most passionate about was sex toy reviews. She loved getting her hands on a new product, testing it, and publishing her findings. It was the perfect synergy of the scientific and person parts of her life.

Problem was, Cy didn’t have a lot of business connections and was reviewing only items she’d bought herself. So in late 2016, Cy decided to put the blog on pause. She’d found work as a life model for art classes—which she still does to this day—bringing in a more immediate income and freeing up time to focus on her studies.

Cy’s first foray into the business side of blogging was to network with other sex bloggers. She’d contact them, make friends, and find out who was offering them sample toys to review. Cy would then reach out to those companies, review their toys, and add an affiliate link in the post to generate income.

Cy found two profitable income streams for Super Smash Cache.

The first was to rent advertising space on the blog to sex toy manufacturers. This allowed her to control the cost of the space, and offer on-brand products, which wasn’t available with advertising programs like Google Adsense.

The second was to offer sponsored posts. These are blog posts which have been paid for by a third-party company to advertise products or brand ideas. For example, a couple’s sex toy shop paid for Cy to write a post about a sexy couple’s night, which included their brand message and a link back to their store in the post. These type of posts take a lot of work, but also the most profitable.

This mixture of income streams has lead to around $600 a month in earning from the newly revised Super Smash Cache.

Cy would like to transition out of modeling and explore more of her creative and artistic passions. She’d like to grow the blog while she explores other options.

Tech Employee Gets Paid to Visit Napa Wineries

What It’s About

A wine lover connects the gap between beginners and experts.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

We have looked at the role of personality in a side hustle a few different times. Especially when it comes to mediums like blogging or platforms like Instagram, people want to know about you. It’s true that the world of wine can be overwhelming or intimidating, but there are lots of ways they can learn about it. Kristen’s readers are interested in her perspective and her experiences, not just the knowledge itself.

Fun Fact

Although grapes grown in Napa Valley only represent 4% of the total grapes grown in California, the Napa Valley wine industry yields $50 billion dollars to the US economy. 95% of the wineries located in Napa Valley are family run, and 67% of these wineries produce fewer than 5,000 cases a year.

Notes from Chris

Episode 662
When Kristen Dussel first set her eyes upon Napa Valley’s lush vineyards, it was love at first sight. She couldn’t believe how beautiful it was—not to mention how delicious the wine could be—and dreamed of one day moving there after graduating from university.

And that’s what she did. She earned a degree in marketing and moved from Minnesota to San Francisco to work for a tech company. She loved the job. And she loved being so close to wine country.

She began visiting wineries on the weekends and soaking up all the knowledge she could. She was a fascinated learner, but sometimes it was just downright intimidating. The people she was interacting with at these wineries were seasoned sommeliers. The disconnect between the casual and enthusiast wine lover was clear—sometimes painfully clear.

Kristen wanted to close the gap, not only for herself but for other millennials who weren’t sure how—and just last fall, she realized the way to do it: a wine lifestyle blog.

In December 2017, Kristen launched her site, Wine Country Chick, and published her first blog: a review of Mumm Winery in Napa.

She published several more posts that month, making sure to stay active on social media. It quickly became clear that Instagram would have the most engagement for her brand since the market was so visual, so she focused on that.

She followed big names in the fashion and food world so that she could learn from their style. They posted frequently, favored certain kinds of photography, and published lots of Instagram Stories. So, naturally, she started doing it too. By early 2018, Kristen had amassed a small following of 3,000 people—and it was growing faster and faster.

In March, a local wine brand messaged Kristen and asked about the possibility of a sponsored post on Instagram. She couldn’t believe it. Someone already wanted to pay her for exposure! She quickly and excitedly agreed, celebrated with a glass of wine, and a couple weeks later, she had made $175 for something she would have done for free.

This opened up a whole new world for Kristen. The blog was just a creative project at first. But from now on, she wouldn’t just get to write about great wineries, she might actually get paid to do so.

Brands kept reaching out, and for the most part, partnerships went off without a hitch. Winecountrychick.com had its first $500 in June, and then in July the brand broke $1,000 and acquired her 10,000th follower.

These days, Wine Country Chick generates anywhere from $500 to $2,000 per month, depending on her full-time job commitments. Kristen’s 16,000 Instagram followers are highly engaged, and she reciprocates with constant engagement back. She’s thrilled that she’s built a profitable hustle in less than a year starting from scratch, and she loves that she’s helping others explore their passion along the way. Kristen is living the Napa dream.

Former Teacher Becomes Children’s Magazine Publisher

What It’s About

Food magazines that gets kids in the kitchen!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

It may seem counterintuitive, but if you’re a small publisher, you don’t want your magazines on newsstands. It is a bloodbath! You have to sell your issues at a deep discount (up to 60%) and if they aren’t sold by a certain date they’re destroyed. Magazines are like milk, they have expiration dates. So, when people ask about getting a new title on newsstands, don’t let your ego tempt you into thinking it is a good thing. It’s an outdated game designed for indies to lose. Instead, find your tribe. offer value and niche down, way down.

Fun Fact

If you can believe it, Jill is a notoriously picky eater. She came to find out as an adult that she’s what is called a “supertaster” (see if you’re a supertaster too over on Scientific American!) and is way more sensitive to mouth-feel and smell than most people. But, being in touch with that fear of new things is what Jill thinks makes her highly qualified to be a source of information about food for kids—especially kids who are growing up like she did eating from boxes, cans, bottles, and jars.

Notes from Chris

Episode 590

Jill Colella grew up in a working class, meat-and-potatoes family. The food on offer at the dinner table was fairly standard stuff and more often than not included processed or junk foods. Knowing that you might be surprised to know that Jill ended up with a successful side hustle in the food publishing industry. In fact, it’s quite possible that she’s the most non-foodie food publisher out there.

Jill’s side hustle is a magazine designed to teach kids about nutritious food. Food isn’t her number one priority, the well-being of children is. Education on nutritious and healthy food is a path toward improving that. But, before I tell you more about the side hustle let’s take a quick look at Jill’s background and how she got to where she is today.

Jill’s first job in her early teens was working at a local grocery store. She hadn’t been exposed to many different foods before that. In fact, she didn’t even know olive oil and artichokes existed! Being around such variety sparked her initial interest in food.

And this interest in food continued through adulthood! Always one to try new things, Jill decided to take a course on how to become a personal chef. She couldn’t imagine herself cooking for the high-end DC types where she lived, so instead, she decided to use her new knowledge another way. She began offering cooking at birthday parties for young children. It was a lucrative gig, sometimes resulting in earning over $700 in a single weekend! She launched a website to complement the business and built a bit of following through word of mouth.

Most importantly, she loved teaching kids the benefits of nutritious food and how to make it!

Around 2011, the rise in childhood obesity was becoming a big topic of conversation, and a handful of journalists came across her website, Teach Kids to Cook, while researching for their pieces. They contacted her and she was featured in a few stories! At this point, it occurred to Jill that perhaps she’d be able to help a larger number of children if she started producing more written content.

She modified her existing children’s party website and began to produce more magazine-style content. Once it looked like the online destination of a true publisher, she created a magazine mockup of her first issue of Ingredient Magazine. It was time to try and sell this thing!

Her first publication was a huge success! Jill ended up created a second magazine and now generates an average of $5,000 per month in sales while still working her full-time job doing PR. She plans to keep working on new issues, and maybe launch a third magazine. But the beauty of most of her content is that it’s evergreen. As a big fan of repurposing, she would like to make a series of books and dedicate them to children and food.

Her goal is to be the Mr. Rogers of food, an ambitious goal, but don’t bet against her. It’s a beautiful day in this former teacher and now magazine publisher’s neighborhood!
