Episode 227

When Leah Lynch was sixteen years old she was working a retail job around her high school studies to make a little extra cash on the side. Like so many teenage retail jobs, the work was boring, unfulfilling and making minimum wage didn’t seem to be taking her in the direction that she wanted to go. But what else could a teenager do?

One day while researching alternatives she stumbled across a peculiar breed of rabbits called French Lops. These are some talented rabbits, and she thought she’d try breeding these animals for herself.

Leah then got to work on building up her rabbitry and set about learning what it took to breed these rabbits safely, correctly and to a show quality standard, then selling them for a profit.

After a while, there was a joke in her family that these rabbits would pay for her college tuition. Little did they know that joke would become reality, and she graduated completely debt free from the profits while making over $5,000 per school year in spending money.

Man Consults for Crowdfunding Campaigns After Successfully Raising $4 Million

After mastering the formula for the perfect crowdfunding campaign, a man takes the skills he developed at his day job and starts a consulting business.

Not sure when to launch your crowdfunding campaign? One of Derek’s tips mentioned in the episode is his ’40-72 Rule’ which states that your campaign is ready to launch when you can fund at least 40% of your whole goal within 72 hours using only your email list. Raising money that fast positions your campaign to catch the eye of Kickstarter staff, and there’s no better way to catch the eye of Kickstarter than having a project that funds extremely fast with an actively engaged audience from day one. After all, campaign velocity begets more campaign velocity.

Derek has successfully raised over $4 million on Kickstarter through the Cyanide & Happiness Show and Joking Hazard campaigns. For his book, he interviewed creators of successful campaigns that combined raised over $30 million.

Episode 220

In 2013 Derek Miller successfully crowdfunded more than $750k for his day job—The Cyanide & Happiness, a show with over 7 million YouTube subscribers. As successful as that campaign was, he made a number of silly mistakes that cost him money. It was then that he first had the idea to put everything he did and everything he learned into a book that could help others with their crowdfunding campaign. But the idea died for a couple years, even though people would ask him for advice and he did some light consulting on a couple campaigns.

The idea came back around in 2016 when he helped raise $3.2 million in a crowdfunding campaign for a card game called Joking Hazard. Again people started asking for his help so Derek pushed himself to start putting all of his ideas down on paper into a book.

As he started writing his ideas down, he realized he needed more stories and examples than just his own. So he started cold-emailing his network to see who was interested in being interviewed for his book. During this process that he kept running into people that needed help on their campaigns, and saw the need for crowdfunding consulting, but didn’t really realize it was a thing. Before he knew it, he was well on his way to a successful consulting side hustle!

At this point, he’s brought in nearly $10,000 in 2017 and is expecting another $20,000 from various campaigns by the end of the year. He’s also working on a video course and paid workshops — so that he can scale up, beyond one-to-one consulting.

  • Liz feels that she’s finally landed on a viable side hustle idea—she’s researched it, priced it, and is even using skills that she already has. She even thinks that her start-up costs will be low and totally manageable! All of this has Liz squarely on the right path, however, she has one road block on her side hustle journey: picking out a name for her side hustle. She can’t really launch her side hustle website or build a brand without it, so she’s looking for a way to pick out a name quickly so that she can get the ball rolling.

    If you’re like Liz and are struggling to find a name for your side hustle, here are two tips for picking out something that will lead you on the path to side hustle success: 1) be descriptive (For examples, see Ep. 158 & Ep. 201 and 2) don’t be afraid to pick something clever (For examples, see Ep. 27 & Ep. 198).

There is value in decoding that process for others, and it could be true in a lot of fields from something like medical professions to any kind of union work. Basically, anything that requires certification.

If you do work in a field like this, consider how that process be made easier, quicker, or just more efficient for someone else who wants to enter it?

Episode 202

Today’s story comes from Savanna Perry in Augusta, Georgia. By day, she’s a physician assistant in the field of dermatology, helping around 30 patients a day with skin conditions. Her side hustle is The PA Platform, a website that’s a resource for those interested in becoming PAs themselves. In addition to free blog content, Savanna offers mock interviews, personalized assessments for aspiring students and a review of applications.

Savanna started the site to fit a need—when she was a student, she couldn’t always find the information she was looking for about her future job, so once she graduated, she decided to provide it to others. She’d already done a ton of researching using every possible resource when applying for school, so it was relatively easy to take the knowledge she’d gained to help others.

Savanna worked hard on getting content on her site to improve her SEO and rank high in Google. She shares her weekly blog posts on different platforms such as Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, and Reddit and does monthly webinars on YouTube. She’s also made connections with other bloggers and PAs who are on social media and has grown her site to 20,000 monthly visitors without any paid ads.

In her first year, Savanna made about $4,000, minus the cost of the website ($200). She tripled that in the following 10 months, and her costs were only $700 for her email and scheduling software.

Her question: at what point in the evolution of your side hustle should you put together a website and start promoting it? Is it too soon to start this phase if you don’t have the product ready to go?
  • After having many of his friends ask about his vegan dietary routine, Darryl decided that it may be a good idea to create a guide e-book to help others adhere to a vegan lifestyle. The only problem is that he’s never written an e-book and has no idea how to go about putting it together, publishing it, and marketing it to others.

Indian Personal Finance Blogger Rings Up $4,000/Month

Pardeep started his personal finance blog, CashOverflow, to share his money-saving hacks on credit cards, shopping, and travel. Within his first year, his blog was receiving over 30,000 hits a month, so he decided to start finding ways to monetize it. These days he’s now making more than $4000/month with 150,000 hits a month!

As he said to me, people are interested in reading his stories because they also dream of traveling and want to save money like him. If you’re interested in something, you probably aren’t alone—find your audience!

Pardeep Goyal studied computer science at a large university in India before he spent seven years working at a software company…but he always wanted to do something else. Pardeep was interested in personal finance, especially money-saving hacks related to credit cards, shopping, and travel, so he spent a lot of free time studying and conducting experiments that allowed him to have a better life despite making just an average income.

Most personal finance bloggers are American or maybe Canadian, British, Australian, etc. Not all personal finance readers are in those places…and for a time, they just read the popular blogs or websites based in the U.S. Naturally, this points to an opportunity, to serve all those people elsewhere who might be more receptive to something more relevant to their situation.

That’s what today’s story is all about: a corporate employee named Pardeep Goyal from India who starts a personal finance blog focused specifically on Indian readers. He makes up to $4,000/month which is a pretty fantastic side income for someone from that part of the world.

PE Teacher Makes $11,000 with Membership Site

A PE teacher finds a way to offer online resources to other instructors on his blog through a membership program

Ben started his teacher resource blog, The PE Specialist, because it was a way for him to reflect, answer common questions and provide some needed materials in the form of PDFs to help teachers out. After a while, he realized that in the long-term, selling one-off PDFs for a low price was not a great revenue model, so he made a shift and decided to create a membership site where teachers would pay annually for access to resources.

Almost immediately, he started to make an actual profit from his side hustle. The switch was key to his success. He wisely recognized that the first path to revenue would not lead to sustainable income, so he changed to this new model which is going well.

Fun Fact

Now that he’s fine tuned his membership service, Ben has 90+ yearly members, and this program is now the main source of income for his blog. He makes a little off some introductory PDF products that he still sells at a lower price point, but his memberships fuel the vast majority of his sales. Last year, he made about $11,000 from this project.

This new source of income allowed his wife an opportunity to leave her day job so that she could come home and raise their young daughter. Now that she’s seen how possible it is to obtain a steady side income, his wife has been inspired and is now working on a side hustle of her own.
