Choir Teacher Turns Music Workbooks Into Noteworthy Hustle

What It’s About

A choir instructor strikes a perfect, passive income chord with her digital choir workbooks and membership site.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

According to Erin, teachers are a wealth of valuable information that can easily be turned into a side hustle. In her words, “Teachers are famous for not valuing their own worth. They don’t realize what they have to offer.” Whether it’s a series of creative math exercises, engaging history lessons, or wacky science experiments, she believes teachers should take their original lessons and try packaging them in some way.

Fun Fact

The Practice Room started as a WordPress site, transitioned into a custom PHP site, and is now about to migrate back to WordPress. According to Erin, WordPress plugins for learning management have simply gotten too powerful and flexible to ignore.

Notes from Chris

Episode 430

If you had music class in first or second grade, you might remember the workbooks that you sight read from. Or you might not remember them because they were boring, unoriginal, and—unknown to most students—strangely expensive.

But Erin Lowell, a school choir teacher in the state of Main, knew how expensive they were—and it was a point of discord for her. The cheap books were $4 a piece, and for a school of 150 students, that meant it would take $600 to give each student their own workbook. Or actually, they loaned them the workbooks and would then collect them for the next year. What music program has $600 per year to spend on workbooks alone?

Erin knew there had to be another way—and she couldn’t stand using those same boring books one more time. So in 2004, she made her own.

Using a musical notation program called Finale and a simple word processor, Erin created her own set of sight reading exercises on her own time. To her surprise, it really wasn’t much treble. Once she had a few dozen lessons for the upcoming year, she pitched an idea to her school.

If they would provide the materials and let her use the binding machine, she would do the work every year before school started to put them together. Her school agreed to give her the $100 needed for the materials, and the following year was a musical success.

The kids were learning faster, they were paying better attention, and other teachers around town were starting to notice. After creating more workbooks and selling them to a handful of teachers each year, one of Erin’s principals suggested that she sell them online as ebooks—and thus, The Practice Room was born!

She had already proven that the workbooks were effective, and she knew that her customers would come back year after year. It seemed like a no-brainer.

Eventually, Erin even decided to transition her ebook series into an online membership model, and the transition really paid off! Erin doesn’t remember exactly when it happened, but within a couple months she was bringing in $500 per month with the membership model. The next year, her monthly average was just over $800 per month with virtually no marketing at all.

For the past several years, Erin has brought in about $20,000 per year through her site, minus about $100 per month on website expenses. It’s been mostly passive, other than answering emails from time to time, but Erin remembers those early days when she spent most of her evenings after school creating sight reading lessons. It was quite the sweet prelude to such a successful side hustle!

Flight Instructor’s App Takes Flight, Earns $30,000

What It’s About

An instructor takes flight into the future by building his first flight app…without ever owning a smart phone.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

If you also feel that you’re a little bit behind the times technologically, Urs says you shouldn’t worry or let it stop you because sometimes what you don’t know can be your biggest asset! He recommends finding someone in your network who can talk you through what apps are, or buy a cheap smartphone to play around with. Then design what you think an app should be like. If you don’t know the rules, you can’t be afraid of breaking them!

Fun Fact

Urs loves apps even though he was late to the party. He’s currently working on an App called 5F, which helps people to find fitness buddies in their local area.

Notes from Chris

Episode 429

For flight instructor Urs Camenisch, it was time to increase his household income. Working 6-7 days a week for a low salary was taking its toll, and Urs wanted a way to make money while he slept. And, without giving up his passion for flying planes.

Despite not being tech savvy—in fact, he didn’t even own a smartphone—he knew an internet business would be the best solution to his problem. However he felt like websites and desktops were a dying breed, and he wanted to future-proof his business as best he could. So, he decided he would create an app.

Through his work as a flight instructor, he spotted a need for Canada’s student pilots. All of them had to take an important exam, the Pre Solo Test about Air Regulations, or PSTAR for short, before being able to fly solo. But, there was little in the way of apps or websites to provide study support. Urs decided he’d take the knowledge he had, and apply it to an easy to access app.

The first step was to find a developer to help him create the app. He found some developers and agencies he wanted to work with, wrote a brief of what he wanted made, and began to ask for quotes. Much to his surprise, they all came back to him with hefty quotes of $30,000 dollars—a whole year’s salary for him. Which was (of course) out of the question.

Not one to be defeated, Urs found a hidden gem in one of the emails a developer sent him. He told Urs that he has to charge so much because he wouldn’t outsource his work. This was a lightbulb moment for him. Why pay so much if he could find the people the developers were outsourcing too and cut out the middleman entirely?

This brought Urs to freelance marketplaces, like Elance and Odesk, which joined forces and is now one company called Upwork.

This time, the quotes came back at a much more affordable rate of $1,000 for the entire app. Urs says he’s a firm believer in hiring locally, but if it’s 30 times the price, someone on a small budget really doesn’t have the luxury of choice.

The final start-up costs for the PSTAR app came in at $3,500. To try and recoup these funds, Urs set the price of his app at affordable prices that would help him earn back the initial investment over the course of the first year or so.

Since launching the app, he’s earned an extra $30,000 through sales. Looking to the future, Urs has started developing another app for fitness lovers. He’s also started to invest in real estate and has found a better job that he loves as a Medevac pilot. All thanks to this one app that eventually took off!

MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:

  • PSTAR Exam App: If you hail from the Great White North and are looking for your aerial career to take flight, get to studying with Urs’ exam prep app
  • Upwork: The global freelancing platform that helps businesses connect with independent freelancers remotely
  • 5F: If you’re looking for something more mainstream than an app for Canadian flight students, check out Urs’ other app—it’s essentially “Tinder for workout partners!”

Weekly Recap: Are You Achieving Your Goals?

Notes from Chris

Episode 428

LISTENER QUESTIONS:

Today we have a listener voicemail from Nick and a listener email from Zach:

  • Nick was recently asked by a client to help them out with SEO for videos that he’s created for them, but he doesn’t have much experience doing something like this specifically for video content. How do you create with SEO in mind for content that may be a bit different?
  • Zach: “I’ve found blogs with Amazon affiliate links similar to what I want to do. But they do not rank very well in google for people searching for what I hope to help with. How do I create content that will rank well so people can find what I create?”

It’s certainly possible to do that and indeed a lot of folks have done so. It’s just harder than something that’s strictly online, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it. If it’s right for you and you can handle it, don’t let anyone dissuade you.

If you can be dissuaded or for anyone else out there wondering about this, listen to the Weekly Recap to learn more!

Yoga Enthusiast Stretches B-School Education Into Fair-Trade Kids Clothes

What It’s About

These yoga inspired children’s clothes will have you saying “namaste.”

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

When we were talking to Jennifer, she said something that really stood out:

“I think it’s crucial for any aspiring entrepreneur with a dream, to quickly let go of what society feeds to us as ‘success.’ The reality is that no full-time job is ever truly stable and secure, and success can be defined beyond your paycheck.”

Don’t let people or society dictate what success should be for you. Indulge in the unconventional and define success for yourself!

Fun Fact

Yes, she has a kids clothing line but, no, she doesn’t have any kids. She says: “If people like what you’re creating, does it really matter? Yes, I consulted with mom friends, a kids yoga teacher, etc., when I was in the early stages of developing the overall vision, look, and feel of the company.”

Notes from Chris

Episode 427

Jennifer Coulombe went to business school because she knew she eventually wanted to work for herself. But she didn’t know exactly what that would look like. She continued her full-time job while in business school. As if that wasn’t enough, she also took on a part-time role with a global health organization.

Needless to say, Jennifer’s life during business school was intense. When she finished in December of 2014, she suddenly had a lot of spare time on her hands. So naturally, she looked to fill this void.

Most of us with an interest in yoga may have signed up for some classes. But not Jennifer. She enrolled in a Kundalini yoga teacher training. Her intent in doing this was just to learn, she had no intention of teaching.

That training proved to be life-changing. Jennifer wanted to work for herself, and the yoga training helped remove some mental blocks holding her back from launching a business. Three months later, she quit her full-time job and started Sat Nam babe.

Sat Nam babe is a socially conscious kids yoga clothes line for kids under six and babies. She wanted other yoga enthusiasts to have a way to transfer its positive, healthy lifestyle onto their kids.

She consulted with mom friends and a kids yoga teacher to develop the overall vision, look, and feel of the business. Her kids’ yoga clothing line includes tees, onesies, headbands, leggings, and harem pants. They even have leggings made out of recycled plastic bottles—so if you’ve ever felt guilty about buying bottled water, take comfort in the fact that one day that bottle may become some kid’s yoga pants.

In the 8 months, she was in business in 2017, she made just under $8,000. Most of her orders come through her website now, so she doesn’t actively push iFundWomen anymore. She also opened an Etsy shop but is phasing it out and letting the listings expire so that she can focus more on her own site.

Jennifer is looking to expand her wholesale reach. Sat Nam babe is currently sold in a handful of yoga studios, but not any children’s clothing stores. She also wants to amp up her online marketing efforts. As she continues to expand the reach of her kids’ yoga clothing line, let’s hope when buyers are faced with a decision of who to buy from, they’ll say “namaste with Sat Nam babe.”

  • iFundWomen: The crowdfunding platform for women-led businesses that Jennifer used to get Sat Nam babe off the ground

Couple’s Photo Booth Hustle Creates Memories and Cash

What It’s About

A couple starts a photo booth hustle to create memories and cash.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

If you’re thinking that this photo booth side hustle sounds “picture perfect” and you’d like to learn how to start something similar, Chris recommends researching the photo booth market in your area to start. Check to see if there are other companies offering this service, and see if there are ways that you could enter the market with a unique or better offering.

Fun Fact

Paramount Photo Booths are elegant and will look the part at most luxurious events, which means that Chris and his wife have done weddings at private estates. They have also worked a few gigs for celebrities who live in the area but said they won’t “kiss and tell.”

Notes from Chris

Episode 426

Today’s story comes from Chris Politylo from New York. By day, he’s an investigator for the state government as well as an assistant pastor. His side hustle is Paramount Photo Booths, a photo booth rental company he runs with his wife. They got the idea after attending a wedding with a photo booth and being unimpressed with the quality of both the booth and the photos. They thought there was an opportunity to provide something better.

But they also wanted to make sure they weren’t just diving headfirst into a business they knew nothing about. So before dropping thousands of dollars on equipment, Chris spent a few months researching one that met his criteria.

Before starting the business, Chris researched the market and saw that there was another photo booth rental company in his city, which showed him that there was demand in the area.

He also saw that the photo booth companies in the area he was looking to serve weren’t using Adwords, and many weren’t listed in Google local or showing up in organic results. Some of the websites he saw looked outdated or unprofessional. This was another reason to start the project: they figured they could easily beat the competition in that area.

They now rent photo booths to clients having all kinds of different events, mostly on the weekends. They provide not just the booth, but also fun props and a friendly attendant. They do a lot of weddings, but also Sweet 16s, proms, bar and bat mitzvahs, class reunions, fundraisers, holiday parties, school events, and corporate events.

Good news if you’re interested in doing this: while they spent $8,000 in startup costs, Chris says that prices have come down significantly and that people could get started now for around $3,000. More good news: Paramount Photo Booths was profitable right away. They made about $11,5000 in net profit in 2014, which rose to $18,000 in 2015 and $21,000 in 2016 and 2017.

Since every event they bring the photo booth to is a celebration, everyone is usually really happy. It creates a great working environment. And for Chris and his family, it was love at first click.

College Student Pitches 300 TEDx Events, Becomes Semi-Pro Speaker

What It’s About

A student dominates the speaking field, earning free trips and a world record in TEDx talk appearances.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

After presenting at almost 1,200 events around the world, Simon has learned a thing or two. His advice? Any unique experience or memory with a lesson can be turned into an even greater story. Once you’ve got that, the next step is to find a place to share it.

Once you’ve found your event, take anything that comes your way. Your first speaking gigs might be for free—and that’s ok. The most important thing is building confidence in yourself, and in your ability to engage an audience.

Fun Fact

While Simon is a fantastic TEDx speaker, he is perhaps best known as the founder of the world’s first and only all-Asian American dance-rock band, The Slants, who won their case in the United States Supreme Court (SCOTUS) against the U.S. government in a landmark legal battle to expand First Amendment rights for minorities. Read more about it, here!

Notes from Chris

Episode 425

Simon Tam is a big proponent of the adage: “go big or go home.” And, as an almost full-time traveler, he rarely has to go home. This marketing director has turned his public speaking side hustle into an “evenings and weekends” job that also allows him to travel the world for free. He credits his side hustle with helping him find the freedom to travel, create valuable memories, and meet interesting people along the way.

So how does this work? Simon has always loved watching Ted Talks. Every episode he watched gave him inspiration to apply to his career and life in general. Simon wanted to be up on stage, too. He knew he had a story to tell, especially with his unique perspective as a person of color in Oregon. He just didn’t know how, or where, to start sharing it.

Simon knew it was unlikely for him to be selected for a main TED Talk without any previous speaking experience, so the website’s self-nomination form was not his answer. Instead, he contacted every independent TEDx event in the world—more than 300. They were smaller than the main events, and he thought if he asked enough of them, one of them would say yes.

Most of those ignored his emails. Many events turned him down… but one event said yes. That was all Simon needed to gain momentum. He sent more than 200 follow-up emails and was able to book two more events that year.

With experience under his belt, he used this tactic again the next year and got himself on the roster for 4 more events. Now, he’s made 12 TEDx appearances as both a speaker and host.

The publicity from each Ted appearance helped accelerate Simon’s side hustle. His videos started to spread, and he began to be asked to lead corporate trainings, offer keynote speeches, and sit on panels. With all of these new experiences, he keeps a Google Drive folder full of ideas for his next talk.

Simon is able to earn an extra $30,000 a year in speaking-generated income. Because he presents at events and conferences around the world, he also gets free trips in addition to that income.

With the freedom to travel the world for free, and earn income while doing it, Simon’s side hustle puts him in the perfect position to capitalize on both. That’s something to talk about.

Check out one of Simon’s TEDx talks below:

Designer Goes Viral with Playful T-Shirts; Earns $445,000

What It’s About

A freelance graphic designer turns his work research into a side hustle that earns $10,000 a month.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Mike believes that the key to success in print-on-demand, and eCommerce in general, is starting. It’s an easy industry to enter into, and people can start earning money without too much capital. The best way to scale print-on-demand as a side hustle is to put in the effort to learn a few key skills, such as Google Adwords. Print-on-demand businesses thrive by testing new ideas, and one experiment could be your next viral design. Add a dash of experimentation, a heap of patience, a sprinkle of perseverance, and you’ve created a bona fide side hustle.

Fun Fact

Did you know that the world record for the most t-shirts worn at one time is 257? This heroic feat was achieved by Sanath Bandara of Sri Lanka in 2011. It took him 1 hour and 57 minutes to put them all on, and he beat the previous record by just 5 shirts!

Notes from Chris

Episode 424

Mike Pasley is an “Idea Man,” and the only thing the professional graphic designer likes more than ideas is putting them into action. According to him, he’s always coming up with a new money-making venture. At the wide-eyed age of 12, he created his first side hustle, an eBay store to sell old items. It’s been an entrepreneurial whirlwind ever since.

From childhood eBay stores, Mike went on to pursue a degree in marketing. After graduating, he went into a full-time freelance career and has been busy ever since. After a foray into the craft beer market, he then found himself working as a digital marketer for Viralstyle, an online fulfillment company which specialized in custom apparel. This was his first step into the print-on-demand industry… and suddenly he was in uncharted territory.

ViralStyle let anyone, anywhere, upload their t-shirt design and sell it online through a crowdfunded format. Once a customer orders a design, it goes to print and is then mailed to their address. Mike had stumbled upon a very simple business model with a ton of benefits! There was no inventory for the company to maintain, very little overhead fees outside of advertising, and the best part—it could be done part-time.

Mike needed to figure out the best way to attract potential sellers to the website, so he started to learn how to design and sell t-shirts. He created his own practice store called Famous In Real Life. That way, he would understand what people needed when they visited the site and how they would use it.

It wasn’t all smooth sailing for Mike and finding his first few customers proved difficult. It took a few tries, and a $300 investment in advertising, for him to find his golden t-shirt design. But once a t-shirt went viral, traffic to his Shopify store quickly increased. Within six months, he was consistently bringing in an average of $10,000 a month. By the end of 2017, Mike had earned $445,000 in total revenue. He had virtually no start-up costs, so all the money he makes becomes additional income—or funds to invest into new side hustles.

High School Student Earns $20,000 Making Wooden Bow Ties

What It’s About

Tie-red of shoddy craftsmanship, this high school student decides to make matters into his own hands.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

In the beginning, Paul was making and selling general woodcraft items on Etsy and it was going okay, but he started making real money once he identified something to focus on.

Don’t try and do it all—find things that are successful and do those really well instead!

Fun Fact

Paul had been tinkering with woodworking for a long time, but only pivoted to making wooden bow ties when he was given one as a gift. He liked the concept but was sure that he could do better than the bow tie he was given, and he set out to prove it.

Notes from Chris

Episode 423

When twelve-year-old Paul Kaster was first introduced to woodworking, he had no idea how big a role it would play in his life. Paul’s love of this craft came about after watching popular YouTube woodworkers like the Wood Whisperer (yes, this is a thing), which encouraged him to continually push the limits of his abilities.

Plugging away at the craft, Paul started experimenting with different ideas. Once in a while he’d list his products on Etsy, or sell them to family and friends. His first customer was his mom, who bought a cutting board from him. At a time where most teenagers would develop and pursue new interests, the encouragement Paul received helped him stay the course and he continued working on his hobby.

His passion project would turn into something more four years later. Paul had received a wooden bow tie as a gift and liked the concept. The only problem was that the tie he received was chunky, unattractive, and poorly finished. From his years of experience woodworking, Paul knew he could do better. And that’s exactly what he set out to do.

Paul first began by taking a look around in the Etsy marketplace. Most of the wooden bow ties he saw were large and chunky, like the one he’d received, while others were flat and lacked contour. Paul knew the ideal bow tie would be somewhere in between. (He was looking for the Goldilocks of wooden bow ties.) He loved the feeling of classic fabric ties, so he crafted a wooden one that emulated this look and style.

These wooden bow ties took off! The natural search and discovery features of Etsy drove initial sales and Paul quickly realized that the bow ties sold a lot better than the other products he listed from time to time.

So how did it work out financially? Crooked Branch Studio made $20,000 in profit on the back of 40K in revenue in 2016. With his low startup costs funded by Kickstarter, Paul was able to turn woodworking from a passion project to a profitable side hustle without incurring any risk.

MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:

  • Crooked Branch Studio: Don’t get tied down with conventional bow ties—head on over to Paul’s website (or Etsy page) to pick up a unique conversation starter for yourself!
  • Carbon Cravat: If you’re looking for an even more modern take, check out Paul’s other bow tie side hustle where he makes bow ties out aerospace carbon fiber
  • Shopify: Paul used Shopify to set up his store for Crooked Branch Studio, and they’re offering a 21-day trial and exclusive discount for all Side Hustle School listeners!

Private Chef Turns Performance Food Into $30,000/Month Hustle

What It’s About

Phat Fudge leads to phat profits for this California paleo chef.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Her audience loved that she wasn’t the kind of person to resort to showing off, and it built trust between her and them. She willingly gave the knowledge that she had accumulated along the way, and she never asked anything of them. And it’s this that Mary credits with how freely they shared her materials with others—they recognized that she was doing what she did for the love of the process.

Fun Fact

In addition to hustling her healthy and delicious fudge-y solutions to your everyday energy gel packets, Mary also makes things like bacon granola—or “Unicorn Fuel” as she likes to call it—and you can find the recipe for it on her Paleo Chef website!

Notes from Chris

Episode 422

Since her days on the playground in elementary school, Mary Shenouda never felt truly healthy, but her teachers and countless health professionals couldn’t pinpoint the source of her discomfort. She was constantly up to date with the latest in medications, but nothing ever seemed to work. Nothing liberated her from what felt like a lifetime of suffering.

She was pricked and prodded to no avail, and by the time she was an adult she’d had so many blood samples drawn that she speculated she was actually keeping a small town of vampires alive somewhere.

This course continued through her early twenties, and when Mary turned twenty-three, her health fell to an all-time low.

Frustrated and tired of finding herself visiting hospitals for more expensive tests, Mary realized she needed to take matters into her own hands. Through her extensive research, she learned that, if she adopted a paleo diet and eliminated processed foods, she might actually be able to cure her ailments since it seemed that she was gluten intolerant.

Within months of learning how to cook gluten-free, paleo meals for herself, Mary’s sickness began to feel like a thing of the past.

Thrilled that she was finally beginning to feel like a normal human being again, she decided to document her journey online and share all some of the recipes and habits that were getting her back in tip-top shape.

Before she knew it, she was developing a significant following on social media!

Mary enjoyed her corporate job in San Francisco, but over time, she realized she had a greater calling than growing tech companies: teaching people to eat healthy food. Mary eventually left her tech job to cook and consult full time.

But she didn’t just stop there.

Mary wasn’t a fan of the many nutrient gels, powders, and sugar bars she tried during her personal health renaissance, so she began experimenting with her own performance food. After a few weeks of testing, she landed on a fudge-like recipe and called it Phat Fudge (for those who may not be in the know, PHAT stands for “Pretty Hot And Tempting”).

And after a couple of years in business, Mary is bringing in around $30,000/month with this new side business, and she’s even working on a partnership with Whole Foods!

Weekly Recap: Should You Open a Retail Store While Working a Job?

Notes from Chris

Episode 421

LISTENER QUESTIONS:

I recently received a great email from Rachel. She has a question that a number or people have asked in different ways, but I love the way that she phrased it. Here’s what Rachel had to say:

  • Hi Chris! Today, I was filled with excitement as I opened my Amazon box to the bright, yellow cover of your book. I can’t wait to dig in! My question for you: is it possible to create a side hustle for a brick-and-mortar business while maintaining your day job? It seems like many people’s success is with low overhead online businesses, but my dream is to open a wellness studio. Am I biting off too much to chew with a side hustle of this nature?Thank you for taking the time to read this!

If you have something you’d like to ask me or an update you’d like to share, I’d love to hear from you. Leave me a voice message on the website or call into the Side Hustle Hotline (Dial 844-9-HUSTLE // 844-948-7853), and your question may be featured on the show!
