Words of Wisdom

When we were talking to Jennifer, she said something that really stood out:

"I think it's crucial for any aspiring entrepreneur with a dream, to quickly let go of what society feeds to us as ‘success.’ The reality is that no full-time job is ever truly stable and secure, and success can be defined beyond your paycheck."

Don't let people or society dictate what success should be for you. Indulge in the unconventional and define success for yourself!

Fun Fact

Yes, she has a kids clothing line but, no, she doesn’t have any kids. She says: “If people like what you're creating, does it really matter? Yes, I consulted with mom friends, a kids yoga teacher, etc., when I was in the early stages of developing the overall vision, look, and feel of the company.”

Notes from Chris

Episode 427

Jennifer Coulombe went to business school because she knew she eventually wanted to work for herself. But she didn’t know exactly what that would look like. She continued her full-time job while in business school. As if that wasn’t enough, she also took on a part-time role with a global health organization.

Needless to say, Jennifer’s life during business school was intense. When she finished in December of 2014, she suddenly had a lot of spare time on her hands. So naturally, she looked to fill this void.

Most of us with an interest in yoga may have signed up for some classes. But not Jennifer. She enrolled in a Kundalini yoga teacher training. Her intent in doing this was just to learn, she had no intention of teaching.

That training proved to be life-changing. Jennifer wanted to work for herself, and the yoga training helped remove some mental blocks holding her back from launching a business. Three months later, she quit her full-time job and started Sat Nam babe.

Sat Nam babe is a socially conscious kids yoga clothes line for kids under six and babies. She wanted other yoga enthusiasts to have a way to transfer its positive, healthy lifestyle onto their kids.

She consulted with mom friends and a kids yoga teacher to develop the overall vision, look, and feel of the business. Her kids' yoga clothing line includes tees, onesies, headbands, leggings, and harem pants. They even have leggings made out of recycled plastic bottles—so if you’ve ever felt guilty about buying bottled water, take comfort in the fact that one day that bottle may become some kid’s yoga pants.

In the 8 months, she was in business in 2017, she made just under $8,000. Most of her orders come through her website now, so she doesn’t actively push iFundWomen anymore. She also opened an Etsy shop but is phasing it out and letting the listings expire so that she can focus more on her own site.

Jennifer is looking to expand her wholesale reach. Sat Nam babe is currently sold in a handful of yoga studios, but not any children's clothing stores. She also wants to amp up her online marketing efforts. As she continues to expand the reach of her kids' yoga clothing line, let’s hope when buyers are faced with a decision of who to buy from, they’ll say “namaste with Sat Nam babe.”
