University Director Turns Draining Problem Into Profitable Power-Up

What It’s About

A side hustle with real power-up potential!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

There are a lot of these little chargers out there, and there are millions and millions of phones. So I am not surprised that someone who takes an interesting approach to them is able to sell a lot. This is definitely a market with room for a lot of sellers.

Too bad about Amazon, but I’m glad he recovered in the true spirit of forging ahead in the face of obstacles!

Fun Fact

Chris has one of the best About pages I’ve ever read. Some of the highlights from his experience are:

1. He once piloted the TGV, the French bullet train, and got it up to 300 kph. 2. He’s trained Yemeni freedom fighters on the “proper” use of social media 3. In Moscow, he had a gun pointed straight at him. The guy didn’t shoot him, but he did knee him in the balls. Someone also tried to sell him a wife, and he spent several hours in a Russian jail.

Notes from Chris

Episode 593

Chris Reimer’s job means he spends a lot of time on his phone. As the associate director of new media at Maryville University, Chris is constantly swapping between both his personal and professional iPhones. If you’ve ever used an iPhone yourself for more than, say, thirty seconds, you’ll be aware of the problem which drained much of his energy.

Just a few hours into his workday, Chris would find his phones were running out of power and in quick need of a recharge. Unwilling to tether himself to a plug socket two to three times a day, Chris began to invest in power banks so he could charge on the go. Simply connect your phone to the battery pack and you’re free to use it in the way it was intended—mobile.

At first, he was totally enamored with those little power banks. They removed the stress of his phone dying and missing important calls or updates which the University expected him to answer. But as time went on he grew more and more frustrated with them. Although there were some good power banks on the market, there were none he considered great and didn’t seem to have the right features he wanted, especially for the money he was paying for them.

Thus began the search for a truly great power bank. And this being Side Hustle School, it means it was a search for him to learn to sell them. That’s right, Chris realized it was up to him to create the power bank he wanted to see in the world. After years of fumbling around, it was time to charge-down this industry and power-up the options for power bank users like himself.

The first step was to develop his idea of what the perfect power bank would be. So, he created a list with all of the features he wanted to see. He wanted a product that was lightweight, could connect with up-to-date cables and would start charging phones instantly, without the annoying little power button he almost always forgot to press.

When he finally released his first Boosa Tech product to the world, Chris ended up generating $5,000 in his first month, mostly to people in his network, and their extended networks. Many of these people were local, so Chris decided to jump in his car and hand deliver the power banks himself. When he arrived at the door, he took a picture with the happy customer and posted it on his Instagram feed. This created social proof and began to spread some word-of-mouth marketing to people on the platform.

Chris’s biggest achievement, he said, is getting his first “stranger sale.” This is a sale from someone who you don’t know and doesn’t know anyone in your network. There’s no favor or reciprocity, just a clear sign your marketing and outreach is working.

Looking to the future, Chris is looking to capture more of these stranger sales, by using the income he’s generated to venture into paid marketing strategies. Chris also loves his job and has no intentions of quitting, but he’s open to whatever opportunities come powering through in the future.

Agricultural Teacher Earns $200,000 Selling Lesson Plans

What It’s About

An agriculture teacher grows and nurtures a six-figure side income using a niche market.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

This project serves a very specific group of people. While some find marketing to a small group of people limiting, Alicia credits it for her success. One Less Thing had very little competition and came up at the top of searches when people were looking for agricultural education materials. Plus, she could rely on people learning about her products by word of mouth, since the community was so tight-knit.

Fun Fact

At one point, Alicia and Brian decided that both of them would work for the business. Only 6 months after that, however, the worst economic downfall since the recession hit. They didn’t have a steady paycheck or benefits. The two learned that if they were both going to work for the business, they should act like they already were only living off the business before the other spouse quit their job. If they couldn’t survive without dipping into the other spouse’s paycheck, they weren’t ready yet.

Notes from Chris

Episode 592
In 2006, Alicia Tomlinson had just become a parent. She and her husband Brian were thrilled at the arrival of their firstborn, but Alicia quickly realized that her long work days as an agricultural education teacher just wouldn’t work, at least not for a while. She decided that she wasn’t going to come back for the next school year and instead would focus completely on being a full-time mom. This, at the time, seemed like a much-needed break.

That “break” was over before it began. As soon as her fellow teachers found out she was leaving the school system for good, they began asking her about making course materials for them. Alicia wasn’t sure about taking on the extra work but agreed to at least show her friends the materials she had on hand. They were amazed. They couldn’t stop talking about how much time they’d save if they had these materials.

Naturally, Alicia was stunned! She knew that there were very few resources for agricultural education teachers, but had no idea that her personal materials would be so attractive to her peers.

That’s when she got to thinking—what could she do if she really devoted time and effort into creating a product and sold it? After all, she was already well versed in all kinds of agricultural subjects, from forestry to veterinary science to meat science to parliamentary procedure. Plus, she knew what teachers wanted, since, well, she was one. After some deliberation, Alicia decided she would try it out—much to the delight of her friends in the industry.

As Alicia continued to learn about what this side hustle would take to produce, she realized how few materials were necessary to start making products. She already owned a computer and had recently been gifted a printer. All she needed was a pouch laminator. It cost $500—not a small amount of money per se—but it was the only thing she had to buy. Not bad for overall start-up costs!

With her business tools assembled, Alicia began to create her first products. She started with two products almost every kind of agricultural education teacher could use. The first was a review game all about the Future Farmers of America, or FFA. She decided to price the game at $50. The second product was a series of “icebreakers” for teachers to use at the beginning of the school year to help the students get to know one another.

Alicia knew that teachers could create products like this themselves, but that wasn’t the point. The point was that they no longer would have to, which Alicia knew would be attractive.

She began making other class materials and eventually expanded into study cards for something called Career Development Events. At these events, students have to identify all kinds of things from slices of meat to species of plants and animals, to types of industry equipment. It was unrealistic for teachers to have examples of all of those things on hand, and they were often forced to create their own study cards. Alicia decided that she was going to do it for them.

That was the product that really put her business, now called One Less Thing, on the market. Teachers were telling one another all about Alicia’s products, and word traveled quickly in the tight-knit group. Plus, Alicia was speaking at agriculture education conferences and getting a ton of exposure there. After the cows were put out to pasture, Alicia made $35,000 in revenue that year!

One Less Thing has now grown to become more than just a side hustle, and she now produces lesson plans in addition to the other products. Altogether, it pulls in about $200,000 a year, giving both Alicia and her husband the opportunity to work on it full-time. They can support their now family of five with the side hustle Alicia happened to give a chance a few years ago.

Alicia still can’t believe that she gets to do what she does as a job. She loves being able to attend every event her kids have and to be able to eat lunch with her husband every day. She’ll keep putting out her ag-ed resources until the cows come home.

The Coffee Grinder That Made $300,000

What It’s About

A basic, everyday item grinds out huge profits and creates loyal customers.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Raj says his success has largely been due to his customer-driven approach and deeper messaging. From the post-purchase emails, to the way his team responds to support requests, to the written content on the website, to the social media giveaways—all of it builds an ecosystem of value, care, and passion that encourages customers to use their coffee routine to appreciate the little things in life.

Fun Fact

Legend has it that 9th-century goat herders (circa 800 A.D.) noticed the effect caffeine had on their goats, who appeared to “dance” after eating coffee berries. A local monk then made a drink with coffee berries and found that it kept him awake at night, thus the original cup of coffee was born.

Notes from Chris

Episode 591

Raj Jana was just like a lot of us. He was knee-deep in student debt to the tune of $50,000, helping out his parents, and he working hard to climb the corporate ladder as a petroleum engineer at Chevron. Trying to please the corporate overlords day-after-day was exhausting, and Raj dreamed of stepping out of the rat race. He wanted to work for himself, move back to Houston to be with his long-distance girlfriend, and stop sacrificing his happiness for the sake of an MNC.

Raj began reading books and going through courses on internet businesses. He dabbled with a few ideas but eventually landed on private labeling products to sell on Amazon after meeting someone who’d had success in the area.

Making coffee by hand was one way Raj centered himself each morning. He was passionate about good coffee, and wondered if he could capitalize on the growing specialty coffee movement for his hustle. He researched possibilities on Kickstarter, Amazon, and other platforms to see what kinds of devices were selling really well, and the answer was clear: coffee grinders. Not the big, bulky automatic ones, but a small, handheld, manual one.

It would be small, lightweight, used frequently, and sell in the $20-30 range. It could also act as a gateway product to selling something else in the future. And it was perfect for selling on Amazon.

At the time, there was a generic coffee grinder that was selling well on Amazon, and it had zero branding on it. The company that sold it had no website. When Raj saw the same design on Alibaba, the idea clicked: he would use that existing design to create his own grinder that he would promote with creative, passionate branding.

After a couple weeks of confusing emails and a few phone calls, Raj found a manufacturer that would make 200 units to start off—just a $1,000 investment on Raj’s end.

And thus, JavaPresse sprang to life with the turn of a sharp steel blade.

Continually waking up at 5 AM to work on his hustle was rough, but his morning routine of making coffee, writing a gratitude list, and making a plan for the day helped him through. This routine set Raj up for success each day by keeping him focused and centered.

A few weeks after Raj placed his order, his grinders arrived at Amazon’s warehouse. It was go time.

A lot’s happened since then. JavaPresse now has three additional coffee products and a monthly coffee subscription. He’s still selling over one hundred grinders on Amazon per month, has fulfilled two wishes for the Make-A-Wish Foundation with donations, and generated over $300,000 in profit last year.

He’s brewed up a business, a lifestyle, and a mission all in one… and it hasn’t felt like a grind. Pour us another cup, Raj! Here’s to your hustle.

MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:

  • JavaPresse: If your morning routine could use a little less drag and more grind, head on over to Raj’s website to pick up one of his coffee grinders!
  • Alibaba: The platform that Raj used to locate a manufacturer for his coffee grinders

Former Teacher Becomes Children’s Magazine Publisher

What It’s About

Food magazines that gets kids in the kitchen!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

It may seem counterintuitive, but if you’re a small publisher, you don’t want your magazines on newsstands. It is a bloodbath! You have to sell your issues at a deep discount (up to 60%) and if they aren’t sold by a certain date they’re destroyed. Magazines are like milk, they have expiration dates. So, when people ask about getting a new title on newsstands, don’t let your ego tempt you into thinking it is a good thing. It’s an outdated game designed for indies to lose. Instead, find your tribe. offer value and niche down, way down.

Fun Fact

If you can believe it, Jill is a notoriously picky eater. She came to find out as an adult that she’s what is called a “supertaster” (see if you’re a supertaster too over on Scientific American!) and is way more sensitive to mouth-feel and smell than most people. But, being in touch with that fear of new things is what Jill thinks makes her highly qualified to be a source of information about food for kids—especially kids who are growing up like she did eating from boxes, cans, bottles, and jars.

Notes from Chris

Episode 590

Jill Colella grew up in a working class, meat-and-potatoes family. The food on offer at the dinner table was fairly standard stuff and more often than not included processed or junk foods. Knowing that you might be surprised to know that Jill ended up with a successful side hustle in the food publishing industry. In fact, it’s quite possible that she’s the most non-foodie food publisher out there.

Jill’s side hustle is a magazine designed to teach kids about nutritious food. Food isn’t her number one priority, the well-being of children is. Education on nutritious and healthy food is a path toward improving that. But, before I tell you more about the side hustle let’s take a quick look at Jill’s background and how she got to where she is today.

Jill’s first job in her early teens was working at a local grocery store. She hadn’t been exposed to many different foods before that. In fact, she didn’t even know olive oil and artichokes existed! Being around such variety sparked her initial interest in food.

And this interest in food continued through adulthood! Always one to try new things, Jill decided to take a course on how to become a personal chef. She couldn’t imagine herself cooking for the high-end DC types where she lived, so instead, she decided to use her new knowledge another way. She began offering cooking at birthday parties for young children. It was a lucrative gig, sometimes resulting in earning over $700 in a single weekend! She launched a website to complement the business and built a bit of following through word of mouth.

Most importantly, she loved teaching kids the benefits of nutritious food and how to make it!

Around 2011, the rise in childhood obesity was becoming a big topic of conversation, and a handful of journalists came across her website, Teach Kids to Cook, while researching for their pieces. They contacted her and she was featured in a few stories! At this point, it occurred to Jill that perhaps she’d be able to help a larger number of children if she started producing more written content.

She modified her existing children’s party website and began to produce more magazine-style content. Once it looked like the online destination of a true publisher, she created a magazine mockup of her first issue of Ingredient Magazine. It was time to try and sell this thing!

Her first publication was a huge success! Jill ended up created a second magazine and now generates an average of $5,000 per month in sales while still working her full-time job doing PR. She plans to keep working on new issues, and maybe launch a third magazine. But the beauty of most of her content is that it’s evergreen. As a big fan of repurposing, she would like to make a series of books and dedicate them to children and food.

Her goal is to be the Mr. Rogers of food, an ambitious goal, but don’t bet against her. It’s a beautiful day in this former teacher and now magazine publisher’s neighborhood!

Weekly Recap: Busy People Get More Done

Notes from Chris

Episode 589

THEMES & TAKEAWAYS:

This week started off with a million dollar success story in Ep. 583. It’s about a busy chef who builds a massively successful apron empire in her abundant free time.

Wait, what free time? Well, she didn’t have much. She works in the high-end food industry, and yet she still finds a way to create this apron side hustle that becomes incredibly popular in her industry.

Have you ever heard the expression, “If you want to get something done, ask a busy person to do it”?

Never have I seen this principle be more true than when I started producing this podcast. We feature regular people every day on the show with limited time and resources, and yet, they’re doing something remarkable.

They’re finding a way to invest in themselves and create something that they believe in. That is ultimately what this show is all about!

I talk about the importance of making extra money, which is great, but ultimately, what I’m hoping to do is encourage you to do something that matters to you.

In preparation for a book I’m working on, I was reviewing some notes from an episode that we featured long ago, Ep. 353. In that story, Lisa was not only an active mother, she was also a yoga teacher, an author, and a few other things besides! So when she started her home organization business, she didn’t exactly have an abundance of time.

Yet, just like Ellen, she was still able to turn it into a business that brought in upwards of $4,000/month while also helping refugees.

Listen to today’s Weekly Recap to learn more about Lisa and Ellen’s stories (along with a bonus example from Jake in Ep. 23), why busy people get things done, and how you can use this principle to launch a moneymaking project of your own!

WHERE ARE THEY NOW:

This is a new segment that we’re trying out with the help of side hustlers that we’ve featured on the show in the past. Today, we have an update from Sarah Hannington from Ep. 3.

We featured Sarah in the very first week of Side Hustle School when she was building her customized candy hearts side hustle My Custom Candy.

Listen to the Weekly Recap to hear from Sarah and see what’s happened since she was featured on the show at the beginning of last year!

EPISODES FROM THIS WEEK:

Here’s what we heard this week on Side Hustle School! Listen to this week’s recap for a more comprehensive highlight reel.

  • Ep. 583 – A chef sets out to reinvent the humble apron, growing it to a multi-million-dollar company while still working in restaurants at night
  • Ep. 584 – A San Diego project manager creates a tiny foam roller relieve pain and prevent injury no matter where you are
  • Ep. 585 – Two friends try to start an online wedding platform, but they end up with a monthly subscription service offering personalized DIY journals
  • Ep. 586 – This born-and-bred oil worker didn’t need to strike oil to create his profitable, “badass” side hustle
  • Ep. 587 – This designer is the picture of success with a side hustle that draws in a full-time income
  • Ep. 588 – The annual student moving exodus provides side hustle inspiration for two university roommates

Ohio State Students Make Big Moves Storing Items

What It’s About

A rideshare-esque storage solution service.

Words of Wisdom

Running this side hustle helped Brandon to learn a valuable lesson: everything breaks at one point or another. They had to come to terms with the fact that not everything was going to be perfect all the time. But each day it gets better, and he thinks that it’s definitely taught them patience and (perhaps more importantly) the ability to step back and not freak out about small issues.

Fun Fact

The average American moves about 11.7 times in their life, with most of those moves happening between May and September. Planning your next move? Re-use those cardboard boxes! They’ll last for three uses, or 25% of your lifetime moves.

Notes from Chris

Episode 588

In 1967, Ringo Starr sang the classic line “I get by with a little help from my friends.” That adage is never more true than when it comes to moving! As any college student, past or present, knows, moving is an annual and time-honored tradition. So is the clear-out of empty bottles and the seasonal “where-will-I-put-all-this-stuff-until-next-semester” challenge.

While Mike Gargasz and Brandon Gotlieb were able to solve their annual storage crisis, they had lots of friends at Ohio State University who struggle. And what better way to help your friends get by than to start a side hustle dedicated to it?

Brandon, a finance student, and Mike, an engineering student, knew that there had to be a better solution than “hope and pray something works out” when it comes to finding willing family members or friends to store furniture and other items during summer holidays… or any other occasion people have to move.

They pitched the idea of NXTSTOR as a peer-to-peer marketplace that would help connect people with extra space in their home or garage to rent it out to people who have things they need to store. It was a simple process that would allow users to register as a host, list how much space they have available to rent out, and are paid around $1 per rented square foot.

Users upload images of their space and Brandon and Mike speak with the hosts during the in-depth sign-up process. This helps them get an idea of who is trustworthy. Usually, the owner’s insurance covers the contents, but Brandon and Mike are also working to provide an extra set of insurance for the renters which they say should launch fairly soon.

Brandon and Mike’s side hustle is only about a few months old, so they’ve been heavily focused on adding hosts and expanding their network. They’ve used everything from Facebook ads, printed flyers, and they’ve even sponsored a theatre troupe. Results are still waiting to be seen from that last one…

One small move for friends could be a giant leap for… the storage industry as Brandon and Mike look to scale their side hustle and continue their push into new states and grow NXTSTOR, one host at a time. It helps that they’re still friends and roommates, and can weather any storms as they come up. And next time they’re moving, they’ll know exactly where to store their stuff!

Graphic Designer Paints a Picture Worth $8,000/Month

What It’s About

An artist hacks her way to passive income!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

She researched what kinds of things people sold, how, and where, they sold them, and mapped out what they were missing. As Jade explained it, “people sell all sorts of things digitally, so if you’re not a watercolor artist, there are still plenty of other areas to sell digital downloads.” Although her skills might be specialized because she had already honed her artistic skills, for other side hustlers, she recommends thinking about what you’re good at and how you can sell something related to it, digitally.

Fun Fact

The world’s oldest paint award goes to… watercolor! Found in Etsy shops, on refrigerators, and prehistoric caves, there’s almost nothing watercolor can’t do. Original cave paintings were made by mixing pigment with animal fat or spit, and only later on did prehistoric artists start using water to mix their cave-made paint.

Notes from Chris

Episode 587

Jade Orlando has always loved expressing herself through art. Pages of journals, margins in notebooks, you name it, she’s drawn on it. The lifelong artist ended up in a career designing illustrations for a children’s apparel company.

But even with a 9-to-5 that involved endless opportunity to create art, Jade still felt stifled. Her art was bound by client expectations, rules, and even color requirements. She was always creating art on her computer and never with her hands. She already had the desire to make some extra money in her spare time, and what better way to combine that search for artistic expression with a chance to let her hair down and get a little messy with paint to create some magic.

She also had a goal of retiring early, so with these twin goals of creativity + moneymaking, Jade did some market research on Etsy and Pinterest on her lunch break. She wanted to see what kinds of art did well, what kinds of things she liked and didn’t, and see what was missing in the vast online marketplace. Jade noticed that there was a market for downloadable clipart on Etsy and Creative Market, typically featuring an abundance of floral prints. But there wasn’t a lot of high-quality character art or children’s based watercolor packs.

Jade knew she had experience in both watercolor and children’s illustration, so what better way to build her early-retirement fund than by making something for sale?

But then one sale turned into two, then 10, then 100. Eventually Jade had to mute the cash register noise as she began to make more from her side hustle than her day job. What an inconvenience…

Feeling the buzz of success and creative inspiration, Jade created enough prints and product that she could stock up and essentially create a passive side hustle. All she needed to do to make hundreds of dollars a day was answer a few customer inquiries a day.

Startup costs were $0 because she already had the art skills, and all the paint supplies she needed. She joined Etsy because they offered a trial with 30 free product listings, and she hit the ground running, going from 0-$67,500 last year from her Etsy and Creative Market. This year, Jade is on track to draw in about $90,000 from her shops—even though she took off three months of the year.

Because her art tends to be consistent, and doesn’t heavily rely on seasonal pieces, her monthly side hustle income is consistent, too. Her highest earning month this year was $9,500, but it usually hovers around $8,000. Jade says she owes this consistency to her extensive market research and knowing where the gaps are.

Jade is now well on her way to early retirement, especially since her watercolor print shop has led to other freelance work she can undertake in addition to running her online stores. She’s planning to branch out and open her own store, outside of Etsy and Creative Market. But even before that, Jade says she would like to get an assistant, or perhaps her husband, involved to process the artwork so she can get back to what she loves doing… focusing on the painting.

Louisiana Oil Worker Creates Premium Duffel Bag

What It’s About

Badass work bags for badasses who work hard.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

The most effective marketing strategies have been word of mouth and SEO. Every order comes with stickers and fun promotional items customers can use, which help with brand visibility. And SEO helps to connect with people who are looking for the Bad Ass Work Gear brand, or similar items, and bring them into his sales funnel. The strategy seems to be working, as Paul has received photographs of his bags being used as far north as Alaska!

Fun Fact

Paul’s mom got in an argument with her boss because he wanted to order Bad Ass Work Bags. She let him know that it was her son’s company and that she had a vendor that could do them cheaper (Yeah, thanks mom!). Her boss countered, “Everyone in the oilfield is talking about these Bad Ass Work Bags! We want these.”

Notes from Chris

Episode 586

Have you ever heard of an offshore bag? It’s a large, robust, vinyl bag carried by oil workers in Louisiana. They aren’t pretty, but they’re highly functional—designed to survive harsh environments and long-term daily use.

Paul Chittenden has been carrying one since he was nine years old when he was given one to carry his hunting gear—that’s right, they start ‘em young in the Bayou. As his life progressed to work on oil rigs and platforms, presumably when he was at least 12 years old, these bags became an essential part of his daily life, as they were for all of his colleagues.

The thing is, Paul never realized offshore bags weren’t commonplace for the rest of the oil industry. As he began to work in sales with people around the country, he was met with a look of puzzled bewilderment whenever he mentioned them.

There were over one million people in the American oil industry who could benefit from having an offshore bag. If he could break into that market and share the benefits with the masses, he could have a real business on his hands.

Paul started by researching how much it would cost to manufacture one of these bags. He headed over to ThomasNet—a supplier and product sourcing website—and looked for anyone who worked with vinyl and bags. Surprisingly enough, people offering this service were hard to come by, and even when Paul found a supplier with potential, there were lots of roadblocks to contend with. They either weren’t willing to work with him at all or weren’t willing to produce a small amount of stock. It felt like the business was about to fall at the first hurdle. But, Paul had an idea.

Instead of buying a large amount of stock and hoping to sell it, he could create the bags as made-to-order. When an order came in, he could have the bag made up and sent to the customer. So, he began to look for seamstresses who could create the bags for him.

With his inventory problem solved, Paul set about naming the company. He wanted something rugged and strong, like his bags, which would resonate with the hardened men he was targeting. He settled on Bad Ass Work Bags which the guys in his circle loved. (The name has since changed to Bad Ass Work Gear after expanding his inventory.)

Bad Ass Work Gear has generated great revenue over the three years it’s been around, generating $60,000 revenue in its first year, $110,000 in the second and is on track of for $150,000 this year.

Looking to the future, Paul wants to expand into other areas and is looking at creating bags for Firefighters. He’s also thinking ahead about how he can create t-shirts and other branded clothing for badass workers all over the country.

If At First You Don’t Succeed, Make DIY Journals

What It’s About

Decorative journals for those who want something pretty but don’t have time to beautifully portray what we ate this week in pen and watercolors…

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

To prepare for launching, the duo set up social media accounts and started engaging with the bullet journal and lifestyle community by commenting on pictures of journal designs, particularly on Instagram. Some of the more influential people ended up sharing Silk and Sonder’s designs with their own followers, which helped gain some pre-launch traction.

Fun Fact

Silk + Sonder’s first “line” of journals is tea-themed. Each journal is inspired by a different tea blend, with little hints of that blend and its origin country present throughout the journal.

Notes from Chris

Episode 585
Meha Agrawal and Joe Yao go way back to a friendship in college. When they graduated, the two friends went separate ways, but that separation didn’t last long. A few years into their careers, Meha decided to start a side hustle in the form of a luxury wedding platform that would connect brides with vendors online, and it made perfect sense to partner with her friend who had just finished a coding boot camp nearby.

Launching that project took quite a bit of planning, and they figured bullet journaling would be a great way to organize their thoughts and next steps. The idea is to buy a journal with dotted paper and sketch beautiful designs that you can use to track things like your weekly calendar, to-do lists, and gratitude list. Taking the time to hand-draw your planner is supposed to be soothing, mindful, and clarifying.

The only thing was, they were both terrible at it…

They just couldn’t recreate the gorgeous page designs that were trending on Instagram, and the time they spent trying over and over again to make everything look nice and pretty was actually destroying their productivity. In Meha’s words, it was “deflating”.

There had to be a way to capture the personal wellness and productivity side of bullet journaling without having to suffer through the dull, uninspired designs of monthly planners—and at the same time, not have to be an expert artist.

But Meha and Joe couldn’t find any pre-made journals that really hit the nail on the head. The limited options were too boring, one-dimensional, and just bland overall—like they weren’t actually made by creative people, but by corporate execs.

So in July of 2017, they tabled their wedding platform idea and immediately got to work on a new hustle, Silk + Sonder. The goal was to blend the best bullet journal concepts, lifestyle and productivity thought pieces, and planner designs to create a monthly themed journal that would inspire self-care for the less-artistic.

In September, the two launched Silk and Sonder in preparation for their first monthly journal in October. Thanks to that early social media traction, they actually got their first sale that same day on their website. A few weeks later, they successfully fulfilled that first month’s few dozen orders, finished up the journal for November, and started to ramp up marketing.

The June journal of Silk and Sonder shipped to 25 states—a first for the company. They also recently broke $3,000 in monthly, have over 300 monthly subscribers, and are seeing 30% growth month after month. They know they’re doing something right, because gift subscriptions make up 25% of all orders—and those recipients almost always subscribe on their own after the gift.

But the side income is really only half the fun. For Meha, the ability to facilitate self-care and personal growth for hundreds of people around the country is a whole reward in its own—and more than anything, that’s the part she’s most excited about growing.

Mini Foam Roller Works Out the Kinks

What It’s About

A side hustle that’s really on a roll!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Jessika brought up a rather unconventional action point for those of you looking to take your hustle full-time:

“If your plan is to take your side hustle to be bigger than just a hustle, spend some time connecting with your core values and sense of purpose.”

Fun Fact

One of the coolest things about running this side hustle for Jessika and Jade has been the feedback they’ve received from their customers. These RistRollers are being used in ways they never even thought of! From being used to decrease the pain and treatment time associated with trigger finger to rolling out scar tissue for burn victims—it’s pretty amazing what a little foam rolling can do!

Notes from Chris

Episode 584

By day, Jessika Jake is a Senior Project Manager at a digital marketing agency in San Diego. Fun fact: one of her clients is Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon, a race that I did a couple months ago. She’s had a lot of projects and side hustles in her career. I got a list from her that included at least 5 different websites offering digital services. She also tried to start a business for tourists visiting Coronado island. At the time, her daughter, Jade, was living there. That business never took off, partly because Jade took off to see the world.

Jade went to do the Semester at Sea program, which took her to several countries and on many adventures. Periodically she’d call home to report, and the news was always significant:

“I ran a half marathon in Ireland.”

“I rode a camel and slept in the desert.”

Another time she said something else:

“I have even more amazing news. I met someone with a foam roller.”

Jessika didn’t understand. How was finding someone with a foam roller more exciting than finding a camel you could ride in the desert?

But that’s just because, at the time, Jessika didn’t understand the life-changing magic of foam rollers. Jade had scoliosis, and the foam roller helped to treat her symptoms. Merely by rolling around on this magic piece of hard foam, she could feel better.

A lightbulb came on for Jessika. She needed a life-changing roller herself, but a small one … just for her wrist.

You probably know the next part: she looked around and didn’t find anything. Then, Jessika and Jade had what they called a “time-lapsed conversation” about turning this into a project.

Jessika decided to move forward, and she did so quickly. She found a manufacturer for what she called the RistRoller, and she put up a website that cost $20. Why was the RistRoller color green? Because it was one of the few available color options. There was no shopping cart on the website, and all she had was a link to her personal PayPal account.

But sometimes that’s all you need. She was off and rolling!

Jessika says that the project has been bringing in $2,000-3,000 a month, but to her, it means so much more because she found her life’s work. This side hustle is certainly on a roll, and these two are muscling their way into profits and potential.
