Meal Prep Company Cooks up Profits with Customized Orders

What It’s About

Three friends take the guesswork out of meal prep with a healthy, home delivery service.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Sandeep says that if you have an idea, you should write down a list of what you need to do to get it going and then start crossing items off of your list. And if you don’t have something figured out, don’t stress—tackle what you can and come back to the problem.

Fun Fact

Writing with pen and make a mistake? Grab a cucumber, take the peel and slowly erase away the pen writing. You’ll have a clean page in no time.

Notes from Chris

Episode 935
Sandeep Rajmandari says he had a good life in the fall of 2015. After immigrating from Nepal to the San Francisco Bay Area for college a few years earlier, Sandeep was a new graduate. He had also been hired for a job in finance that he enjoyed.

But he also had a major problem—his health was deteriorating, and he was becoming obese. The culprit? It was what he calls the Corporate American diet—lots of sugar, salt, fat, and carbs. It didn’t help that he already had a history of health troubles. As a child, he survived a near-fatal parasitic disease and was then plagued for years by periodic seizures. Then came an up-and-down battle with weight throughout his teen years.

In his first year in college, he had made some positive changes. In fact, through diet and exercise, he lost more than 40 pounds and began to feel better.

So, he was especially disappointed when his weight and health problems returned. At dinner one night, Sandeep complained to two friends, Jeni and Rachelle, about his unhealthy lifestyle and deteriorating health. He knew that meal-prepping would help him avoid making poor diet choices during the week, but he felt like he never had enough time.

Hearing his gripe, one of those friends remarked, “Imagine how many people have the same problem?”

That instant, the three friends saw both a universal problem and a potential business opportunity. Sandeep, Jeni, and Rachelle immediately started thinking about a “meal prep” side hustle.

Right there at the table, they began brainstorming. They even asked their friends on social media if anyone would be interested. The immediate feedback they received gave them even more motivation to proceed.

As they worked on the idea over the next few weeks, they sought out valuable feedback from potential clients and experts, including personal trainers, supplement store employees, and nutritionists. This outreach also helped build awareness so they could sign up many new customers for their soon to open business.

Their early research also showed them some ways to stand out. They noticed that other meal-prep companies had basic menus with limited or no customization. Sandeep and co. decided to offer a much more extensive food, selection, customizability, and shorter delivery windows.

Just one month after first discussing the idea, LoCal Foodz was open for business.

Almost from day one, the business was profitable—but Sandeep, Jeni, and Rachelle decided to keep it a side hustle and to let it organically grow to a point where its demands couldn’t be met without working on it full-time. That point came sooner than expected, after just nine months. All three partners quit their jobs to work at LoCal and that year their side hustle earned over $350,000. That’s right, year one! Revenues and profits have grown each year since.

The team expects their one-time side hustle, now in its fifth year, will have annual revenues of over $1M within the next 18 months. They’re looking to expand nationwide, cooking up healthy meals with lots of options for as many mouths as possible.

Cigar Subscription Box Delivers Smoking Returns

What It’s About

Monthly cigar boxes deliver smoking profits!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Michael had some great advice when we talked to him! He said, “Figure out what you want and work backward. Don’t expect to plant the seed and pick the fruit at the same time, it takes time to build processes, customer base, and profits.”

Fun Fact

Southern Cigar was the first online cigar subscription box! In its early days, Micheal’s tobacco license was addressed to his apartment which allowed for random checks by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF). Once while deep in the throes of studying for final exams, the ATF decided to pay him a visit. Apparently, Michael’s apartment was up to snuff, except for one minor detail—he was missing an “Employees Must Wash Their Hands” sign in his bathroom. Can’t argue with that—it was technically listed as his “place of business.”

Notes from Chris

Episode 934
Michael Arciola is a curious person with a great interest in learning. He double-majored in computer science and business while attending Florida State University. While in the throes of these academic pursuits, he stumbled upon an interesting observation.

Computer science students seemed to actively use their knowledge and newfound skills to build things, while the business students never seemed to exercise their skills at all. The business school seemed to be rooted in theory rather than doing.

Michael found this odd. Why wouldn’t you reinforce what you were learning by applying it to the real world?

So, he decided to put his education to the test… and build a real business. His approach would be different. This wouldn’t be “following his passion.” It stemmed from a deep curiosity to understand how the process of building a business worked. And it would be an experiment in learning.

His idea needed to meet certain criteria and be viable on its own. For months, he considered different options and possibilities.

Then, while on a visit to New Orleans during his junior year at Florida State, he was struck with a smoldering idea. He was relaxing by the hotel pool and saw a man smoking a cigar. A humidor went off in Michael’s head.

He was already familiar with the subscription box model from his brainstorming sessions, and he had an appreciation for cigars. He decided to do some research.

What he liked about the cigar niche was that it’s well known, has a loyal following, and not much has changed about cigars over the years (as opposed to software engineering, where he would eventually begin his other career).

While conducting further research, Michael observed the limited selection of cigar boxes sold by ecommerce shops. Most were low quality. None of the shops were offering unique selections categorized by flavor, size, shape, strength, origin, or manufacturer.

What if he were to launch a premium subscription box service focusing on quality cigars?

After further brainstorming, Michael pitched the idea to his roommate, a fellow cigar aficionado. They decided to go for it. Souther Cigar Company officially launched in September 2015.

Since its 2015 launch, Southern Cigar Company has reached a sustainable recurring income of $4,500 a month.

Michael has since moved on from the glory days of Florida State and currently holds a job with Google as a software engineer. He now wants to continue the steady growth achieved with Southern Cigar Company while tending to a new business venture called Formal Founder, which helps young startups verify potential business names.

It’s not just in computer science where doing is better than theory. Michael’s glad he didn’t let his idea go up in smoke.

Star Wars Fan Forges Lightsaber Empire

What It’s About

In a galaxy not so far away, a repairman fights the Empire equipping fans with battle-ready tools.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

If Justin had to do something differently, he would have been smarter with his capital. He said he had more of a “hobby-mind” than a “business-mind” and made purchases that weren’t strategic. He’s now contemplating whether or not to leave Etsy because of the fees.

As far as advice, he says to pay attention to what other people want because if they want it, it means that someone is not offering it. “Enter that negative space and make a profit.”

Fun Fact

The original lightsabers were made from 1930’s-era Graflex camera flash handle, and the Ripley’s Believe it or Not Museum in Hollywood purchased the saber hilt (handle) for a whopping $450,000 in 2017.

Notes from Chris

Episode 933

If you were a fan of Star Wars as a kid, you may have owned a toy lightsaber to duel with friends or annoy your siblings. Back then, they were just telescoping plastic tubes. But now, grown-up Star Wars fans can have grown-up lightsabers thanks to a small community of “sabersmiths” that are making lightsaber dreams come true.

Collectors spend hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars to buy unique sword handle designs, changing color blades, gyroscopic sensors, programmable audio, and more. And thanks to Disney’s purchase of Lucasfilm in 2012, we’ve entered a new era of explosive Star Wars enthusiasm.

Justin Marshall started his Star Wars collection long ago in a galaxy far away when he got hand-me-down toys from his cousins. He always gravitated to lightsabers. Then, as an adult, Justin began to build custom lightsabers for friends. He started while he was working fulltime as an appliance service technician in the San Francisco Bay Area. These bespoke projects were time-consuming. He invested in many tools for his workshop, including machining equipment, a powder coater, and 3D printer to make custom parts.

The lightsaber market is an active community—easy to find and market to, but very competitive. Justin got more traction when a critical website in that community, the FX Saber Forum, made him an approved seller. This success gave him exposure and credibility with the cosplay fans and collectors that frequent it. The force was with him!

There are many things that Justin enjoys about running SaberBay. He likes being able to call his own shots. While employed as a technician, he wanted to provide customers with a high level of service. But someone else’s decision sometimes kept that from happening.

He feels fortunate that he was able to turn his hobby into a business, and he likes helping people do something that they enjoy. Also, he is never bored as there is always something new, bigger, and better to bring to the market. Much to learn, he still has.

If he had to do something differently, he would have been smarter with his capital.

Congratulations to Justin on taking his side hustle to the next level. Search your feelings, you know it to be true. “Now, Witness The Power Of This Fully Operational Battle Station.”

WEEKLY RECAP: Going from Hobby to Hustle

Notes from Chris

Episode 932

THEMES & TAKEAWAYS:

We’ve just finished week 29 of Season III!

This week, we looked at a home haircut invention that goes on to earn $2 million, a handkerchief hustle that also reaches 7-figures a year, and a jailhouse medic who starts his own mobile clinic.

But first, let’s jump right in and talk a bit more about going from a hobby to a hustle.

Yesterday I mentioned:

“When you go from hobby to side hustle, you might be surprised at how much time you need to spend on tasks that have nothing to do with the hobby itself.”

The jewelry designer in that story (Ep. 931) mentioned that designing her products takes roughly 5% of her time, and the remaining 95% is all about production, promotion, pitching, or working on the business model.

I sometimes feel like this as a writer: I spend far less time actually writing than in doing all of the other things associated with writing!

To hear more on this topic as well as our audio update from Brittany Finkle who we featured in Year 1 of Side Hustle School, tune into the Weekly Recap!

WHERE ARE THEY NOW:

Today, we have an update from Brittany Finkle who was featured on the show in Ep. 184.

  • Ep. 926 – When this 13-year-old created a hair-grooming tool, he had no idea the success it’d have sixteen years later—but not before it nearly crashed and burned due to too much demand
  • Ep. 927 – An employee for a video game company turns a childhood love for adventure into a real-life escape room business
  • Ep. 928 – When a new mom quits her job to stay home with her daughter, she ends up building a seven-figure online store. Meanwhile, her husband documents their success with a six-figure website of his own
  • Ep. 929 – A nurse practitioner in Idaho launches his own mobile urgent care unit, resulting in happy patients and a six-figure side hustle
  • Ep. 930 – When a chiropractor becomes exhausted with following the same routine after 20 years in the field, she steps into a new life as a travel blogger
  • Ep. 931 – An unseasonably rainy Memorial Day yields an accidental side hustle

Brooklyn Publicist Designs Travel-Themed Jewelry Line

What It’s About

A publicist launches a line of nostalgia-inspiring jewelry.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

If you have a clear understanding and perspective on who you are designing for—who your customer is, what they like, what they dislike, what they are capable of buying, etc.—there’s always opportunity to grow the business beyond a single category. But start with one kind of product in order to figure that out—do it really well, and only expand once you have a solid understanding of who your ideal customer is. Once you understand their aesthetic, you can start using that to create new lines and products that are adjacent to what you started with.

Fun Fact

To be mindful, Christina places particular value on upcycling, giving discarded items a second life. “I’m really dedicated to staying as close to minimal waste as possible,” she says. And so the earrings come wrapped in scraps of denim, tossed during alterations; Christina also incorporates found objects in her work—the glass shards from a broken cuff might be repurposed into a one-of-a-kind piece.

“Now that I’ve put the word out, everyone from my mom and aunties to my intern have been donating beads and fabric scraps.” Sustainability shapes her entire philosophy: To create keepsakes, rather than disposable baubles for a season.

Notes from Chris

Episode 931

Memorial Day weekend of 2018 in NYC was unseasonably wet. Instead of hitting up the traditional BBQ and rooftop parties, many New Yorkers opted to stay tucked away indoors warm and dry. But in one brownstone in Brooklyn, Christina Tung was finding the comfort of the indoors anything but comfortable.

With most of her friends out of town or otherwise occupied, Christina found herself woefully without plans. So, she took stock of her options. And then her gaze fell on a pile of jewelry. One of the necklaces was broken and the other was something that she simply didn’t wear much anymore—but instead of sending them off to the trash bin, she opted to refresh them into new pieces.

Jewelry making had always served as a bit of a creative release for her. She took Zen-like comfort in the methodical approach required to take pieces apart and put them back together in new and interesting ways.

With each new piece that she carefully pieced together, there was a theme, and since travel played an important role in her life at this time, she often found herself creating pieces that reminded her of recent adventures she’d undertaken. Vibrant and contrasting hues of beads and stones piled one on top of the other along a chain to represent the snapshots that she carried with her. Her jewelry making outlet also served as a keepsake from her time exploring the world.

A few days later, a friend of hers stopped over at her showroom for a meeting about the PR work that Christina did. When she saw how Christina had spent her weekend, she convinced her to let her take pictures of her work and show them off on her social media channels. A lot of jewelry and retail buyers followed her, and she knew that Christina’s work would really shine and stand out.

Shortly after posting Christina’s work, her account was flooded with DMs and comments—among others, she heard from a purchaser at Saks, and from two creative directors in the industry.

The fact that they were interested was exciting. Being a publicist for her day job, she knew an opportunity when she saw one. Christina decided to actually build a brand around her love of jewelry design.

Since her jewelry centered around her experiences traveling, “souvenir” felt like a fitting name. It’s the French verb for “remember,” derived from a Latin word meaning “to come to mind.” Over time, in English, the word came to represent a tangible piece of the traveled experience that was small enough to bring home. That was the feeling she wanted to evoke with her work—she removed the vowels and called it SVNR.

Since launching her brand a year ago, Christina has sold over 2,400 pieces. Most of her sales are from wholesale accounts that she’s secured over time, although she did create a website using Squarespace to sell directly to consumers.

This summer she’s looking to expand that aesthetic into other categories outside of jewelry, such as handbags and slip dresses. Her goal is to build herself something sustainable and long-lasting—one bead at a time.

Chiropractor Becomes “Smart Luxury” Travel Blogger

What It’s About

A travel blogger takes readers off the beaten track, standing out in a crowded market.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

If you come from a different generation or background than most people in a particular field, there might be a way to use that as an advantage. Instead of thinking about what you need to overcome or compensate for—for example, a lack of technical knowledge—consider what you can offer.

Fun Fact

One of Cacinda’s favorite travel experiences took place on a train in Jordan. While she was watching the beautiful rock formations of the desert roll by, suddenly there were people with guns descending from the dunes on horseback. The passengers were all screaming and yelling, but they came to find out that their guide had actually surprised them with a reenactment of the Arab Revolution of 1916! The train was “captured” and Cacinda was taken to a camp to enjoy a nice glass of champagne.

Notes from Chris

Episode 930

For Dr. Cacinda Maloney, twenty-two years had gone by in a blur. She had been working as a chiropractor, and when she wasn’t at work she was driving her kids to school … then back from school … and then to all of their sporting events. While she loved those kids, the grind was wearing her down. The only thing that kept her sane was a habit she’d followed religiously: every six weeks, she would take a trip.

When Cacinda first started her chiropractic practice, she hired a business manager. He could see how hard she worked, so to help her avoid burnout, he suggested that she implement this habit. He said it would be the “carrot” that dangled in front of her to keep her marching forward.

So Cacinda spent those years traveling all over the world, once every six weeks. Sometimes her husband and kids would join her, and other times she would go solo. Over time, she started to accumulate a lot of Frequent Flyer miles and loyalty program points.

She began to read every blog that she could find on travel hacking and quickly learned the best ways to redeem her points for high-value trips. But even though she was learning to travel more effectively, it wasn’t increasing the amount of travel she could do. She was still dealing with the drudgery of her daily routine.

Cacinda needed to find something fun to do during the workweek. After thinking about it for a while, she realized that she could start blogging about all of the knowledge she had accumulated.

Points & Travel launched in August of 2012, and Cacinda committed to writing every single day. For the first six months, she enjoyed it. But something was still missing. She wanted to write about travel itself, not just the technical aspects of points and miles. After a while, she found that side of things to be boring. She didn’t care about the points, in the end, she cared about the travel and the colorful cultures she experienced because of it.

So, Cacinda started writing about those things instead. She also took another step in her blogging career and began going to conferences for travel bloggers to network.

She found value in the events in an unexpected way. Cacinda made a lot of new travel blogger friends, who shared her passions and interests. And, through those connections, gigs and opportunities for press trips began to crop up. Inadvertently, she was doing some of her best networking.

The majority of her first few jobs were unpaid. At this point, it was 2014, and Cacinda wanted to make travel blogging her full-time career. Even though she wasn’t sure what her money situation would look like, she couldn’t take her 9-5 job anymore, and began to transition out of it.

She rounded off her first year by making roughly $15,000. Not bad for a new blog!

Since then, PointsandTravel.com has continued to grow, and Cacinda now earns anywhere from $6,000-$8,000 a month from her hustle. Most of her income is from doing paid campaigns or press trips with different travel companies. She is attractive to those companies because of her unique experience in the travel industry. Cacinda is over 50 years old, has a family, and is okay with spending a chunk of money for vacations.

Jailhouse Medic Turns House Calls Into Healthy Profits

What It’s About

Nurse Practitioner takes his medical act on the road, picking up six-figures along the way.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Not everyone could do this … but what could you do? If you find yourself missing something—some sort of professional void like Brad was experiencing—might there be a way you could use a side hustle to fill that void? Discontent can be a powerful fuel for making changes in your life.

Fun Fact

In the last two years, Brad has seen patients in a number of interesting places. The most unique? Brad says that’s easily the human residents of an area chicken coop. He says they were good people in a bad spot in life, and he was happy that he could help them out.

Notes from Chris

Episode 929

From a young age, Boise, Idaho-based Brad Bigford liked to help people with their problems. He also enjoyed challenges. After his dream of becoming a firefighter like his dad didn’t work out, he changed focus and became a registered nurse.

Being an RN was great, but he wanted to have more autonomy and decision-making authority, so he increased his training to become a nurse practitioner. For those who don’t know, nurse practitioners are advanced-level medical professionals and can prescribe medication, diagnose illnesses, and provide primary treatment, much like physicians do.

After graduation, Brad was hired by his local sheriff’s office. He found no shortage of challenges in this day job. As the sole medical provider responsible for the healthcare needs of roughly 1,000 inmates at his local county jail, Brad encounters all varieties of medical needs. From dealing with the symptoms of opiate or alcohol withdrawal to managing chronic diseases like diabetes to wound, infections, and mental illnesses, he sees it all.

Still, he felt a void in his professional life. He says that unfortunately most of his jailhouse patients don’t leave him feeling like he’s doing a great job. Medical care can be used as a way for an inmate to get extra privileges, which changes the normal provider/client relationship. Though he still believed in the work, the sum of the parts left him feeling mentally drained.

He began to supplement his income by working with a large medical company doing insurance physicals in people’s homes. But he found that boring and wanted something different.

Each year his family and friends arrived at holiday gatherings with a list of ailments and medical questions. One year, Brad said that he was going to send them a bill for all their questions. He was half-joking … but the idea stuck. From his side hustle doing in-home physical exams, he knew that people loved the convenience of having someone come to them. Why couldn’t he do house calls for their other needs?

So, after talking with the relevant licensing boards, he applied for the necessary licenses and waited. He also applied to accept the major insurance carriers. Overall, starting up took about six months, much of it a waiting game.

Six months later, with all of the clearances in, Table Rock Mobile Medicine was born. Brad’s service, at its core, is about making house calls. The majority of his clients are women, many with young children, and his visits mean that they don’t have to drive to the clinic when their kids are sick. They also never have to worry about sitting around in a waiting room.

In the early months, business was slow, with a few happy customers each week. It was bringing in about $1,000 per month but then around fall of 2017, school resumed and suddenly business boomed as kids began to get sick.

He started seeing his business repeatedly tagged in local Facebook posts, and soon his calendar was full. To this day, more than 90% of Brad’s clients find him via word of mouth, and most schedule their own visits on the website without speaking to him until he arrives.

Brad says that house calls aren’t the most efficient business model—which is why they are virtually nonexistent in many areas. While he can’t see the 40+ daily patients that many providers in a brick and mortar location would, his house calls set Brad apart and allow him to compete and thrive. After two years, Brad’s part-time house call hustle earns more than six figures annually.

In short, the mobile health care hustle has not only produced a great second income—it’s also brought him to another population of patients that offsets the work he does at the jail.

Looking ahead, Brad is considering sharing his experiences and offering some type of consulting or tools to help other nurse practitioners set up a similar business in their area. He says that this could be a good fit for anyone else in his field looking for something different.

Handkerchief Side Hustle Becomes Million-Dollar Blowout

What It’s About

A handkerchief side hustle becomes a hive of activity, producing million-dollar profits.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

What do side hustle successes featuring handkerchiefs, beard oil, and hairbrushes have in common? They’re the kind of practical products that make for ideal e-commerce shops. There’s typically less competition, especially when you find something that sets you apart. In the case of Jennifer Chou, it was personalized handkerchiefs. She effectively owns this market now!

Fun Fact

Early on in the life of Bumblebee Linens, they were sent an unsellable product from China. After complaining to the supplier, they offered to refund the products if they were shipped back. Steve and his wife declined, citing cost as a factor. So, the suppliers ‘sister’s, cousin’s husband’ who was holidaying in San Francisco picked them up for them and shipped them home.

Notes from Chris

Episode 928
When Steve and Jennifer Chou were expecting their first child, they both agreed that parenting would be their #1 priority. That’s why Jennifer chose to quit her job, and be a stay at home mom.

But it wasn’t an easy decision. Jennifer was well on track for a lucrative career in finance. She’d been working as an analyst for a Fortune 500 company for ten years and was bringing in a six-figure salary. Furthermore, the Chous lived in Silicon Valley, where the cost of living is ridiculously high. Making it on one income would be tough, even though Steven had a well-paying job of his own as an engineer.

Jennifer didn’t want her lack of income to be a hindrance on their lifestyle or finances. So, together they brainstormed ways to make extra money. One thing stood out that took them back to their wedding preparations.

Wanting to give their bridal party some personalized handkerchiefs, they’d ended up importing twenty dozen of them … even though they only needed six! It was the only cost-effective way to get the ones they wanted. After their wedding, they listed the extras on eBay, and all of them sold within a week.

The quick turnover of those handkerchiefs stuck in their minds. If there was such a demand back then, maybe they’d be able to start an online store selling them now. They got in touch with the same supplier they used for their wedding and spent just under $2,000 on handkerchiefs. They also built a website, calling it Bumblebee Linens.

At first, the linen shop wasn’t exactly a hive of activity. They’d bought a whole range of different handkerchiefs, without actually testing the market. But eventually, some product started to move and they made sales. As the first orders came in, they had to quickly figure out a way to pack and ship them.

Before long, more and more people were ordering from Bumblebee Linens. To increase sales further, they decided to focus on personalization as a point of difference from other companies. They encouraged potential customers to purchase personalized add-ons like initials or a few special words printed on the handkerchiefs as part of their custom orders.

And it worked! Before their daughter’s first birthday, BumbleBee Linens had become a six-figure business—completely replacing the lost income from Jennifer’s day job without the necessity of her having to leave her daughter during the day.

One thing was for certain—the journey was not nearly as smooth as their linens. Although the business was growing, it wasn’t without problems. They had issues with suppliers where the samples they received didn’t match the final product. This meant that they had to ship their order back to the suppliers and re-order, which left them feeling dreadfully understocked.

It also felt like a lonely process at times—working in isolation with no one to bounce ideas off. But still… those things didn’t stop the store from growing into a seven-figure business over the next few years.

Regardless, these busy bees would agree that it’s all been worth it when they get to spend their time on what matters most to them—their family.

The Great Escape! Video Game Maker Creates Real-Life Puzzle Rooms

What It’s About

The first American escape room company… and it started as a side hustle!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

The escape room market is a little crowded now, but it’s crowded in a similar way that podcasting is crowded … a lot of people still don’t listen to podcasts, and likewise, a lot of people don’t know about escape rooms!

If this is a side hustle concept that interests you, figure out what is already out there and see what kind of added value you can bring to the table.

Fun Fact

Nate Martin has gained some notoriety having been dubbed the “Father of Escape Rooms” in a television appearance several years ago. It seems his budding business operation kicked off an entertainment revolution—it was the first ever American escape room company!

Notes from Chris

Episode 927
Nate Martin loves video games. Growing up, they were his favorite form of entertainment and played a massive role in his life. He loved games so much, he decided to learn all about them in school, earning a Bachelor of Science in Real-Time Interactive Simulation and Computer Science.

This eventually led to a career at Microsoft, followed by a stint running the online services division at Electronic Arts (EA), one of the largest video game companies in the world.

While there, he worked on several well-known games—Battlefield 4, Plants vs. Zombies, and Dragon Age among others. But he wanted to have even more of an impact… and after doing some math, realizing he’d have to work until he was at least 200 years old before becoming the CEO, Nate started thinking about other ways he could make his mark.

It was while working as a senior project manager at EA that he learned about escape rooms. The concept was already quite popular in Japan, where it originated, and Europe, but nobody was really doing it in the U.S. In a typical escape room, a group of 6-10 people are locked in a themed room for an hour. To “break out,” you have to work together to solve a series of puzzles. There’s often a guide or attendant in the room who can help if you get stuck, and it can be a lot of fun to do it with people you know.

The way Nate saw it, real-life escape rooms were the direct, physical manifestation of adventure games that he’d known and loved for decades. It was the next level of gaming!

The more he and his co-founder, Lindsay Morse, got to talking about the escape room concept, the more they wanted to do it. “Someone should bring this to Seattle,” they thought. So, they decided to do just that.

Nate took a “shoot first, ask questions later” approach to getting Puzzle Break off the ground. He held a sincere belief that they should just figure it out as they went. If they succeeded, they could expand. And if they failed, they could do something else.

He and Lindsay also avoided traditional first-steps taken by startups, like market research, saying they had neither the experience nor the patience for it.

Instead, Nate drew inspiration from some of those video games he adored growing up as well as the ones he encountered in adulthood: games like Myst, The Room, and The Legend of Kyrandia. He focused on creating something centered around finding clues, solving puzzles, and joining forces with real people in real life.

And business has grown. Since launching in August 2013, Puzzle Break has gone on to boast seven-figure revenue, five locations, multiple portable experiences for corporate clients, and over a dozen experiences across the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line.

When attracting customers’ attention these days, Nate said they’ve adopted a more traditional approach in the form of Google Ads. Facebook is too far removed from a purchasing decision in his sector and so he doesn’t use it.

Nate left his day job with Electronic Arts to man the helm at Puzzle Break just three months after opening its doors.

He plans to keep cranking out the maximum amount of enjoyment for the maximum amount of people. He’s got several new Puzzle Break locations and experiences in development.

“Home Haircut” Invention Becomes Viral Moneymaker

What It’s About

A childhood invention yields fast-growing profits!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

The Cut Buddy wasn’t based on a well-known product, so Joshua knew he had to demonstrate it—and the best way to do that was on YouTube. He made a few videos, showing people how to cut their hair in different ways using his product.

If you’re working with a product that isn’t common, find ways to make it easier for your customers to understand. Since a lot of people are visual, using something like YouTube videos to demonstrate your product is a great idea!

Fun Fact

Joshua struggled at first to raise money to get his product professionally designed. Then, one day, his girlfriend remembered what her father did for a living: design products for NASA. Needless to say, Joshua’s product wasn’t exactly rocket science.

Notes from Chris

Episode 926

As a kid, Joshua Esnard was a problem solver. Growing up in the small city of Ithaca, New York, he had to find ways to get things done when there weren’t tons of options—like getting a haircut. He couldn’t drive, his parents were at work all day at Cornell University, and the only barber was miles away. So he began cutting his own hair.

It didn’t go well at first. Lines weren’t straight. He gave himself a few bald spots. But he knew he could figure out a solution—it was just a matter of eliminating the same errors he was making over and over again.

So he grabbed some cardboard and plastic from his dad’s supplies and cut out a few curve guides that he could hold up while trimming to get a clean, straight cut. He even gave this handmade solution to a common problem a name: The Cut Buddy.

Fast forward a decade to 2014. Joshua was moving a treadmill into his garage. He had to take off the door hinges to get it in, and when he did, he just left the door sitting to the side. He was tired and figured he would do it later. But his girlfriend didn’t see it that way.

“You never finish what you start,” she complained. It was the verbal kick in the pants Joshua needed. She was right. He didn’t want to be that kind of person, especially once he had kids. So, he decided to follow through on one of his entrepreneurial ideas, and he knew just the one. The next day he took his old Cut Buddy idea to a patent attorney.

He also began making prototypes out of basic supplies from Office Depot and Home Depot and taking them to startup pitch competitions. But time and time again, he lost. Nobody believed the product really solved a huge need—and Joshua’s lack of experience running a business, of course, made it a hard sell.

Joshua invested nearly $10,000 on the full CAD design, getting a website built and a hundred boxes of Cut Buddy’s ready to sell at $14.99 a pop. It was time to launch.

After getting invited to sell on Amazon and venturing into retail, Joshua eventually licensed his product to the Andis Clipper Company, who now bundles the Cut Buddy with other grooming products and sells them in every Walmart in the country. He’s making good money from the deal, but now they get to worry about sales, inventory, and fighting counterfeits.

Joshua’s thrilled about the cash he’s made, and he’s itching to do it again. He’s working on new inventions, getting into real estate, and may even start a truffle farm with his friends. He’s also now a dad and doesn’t have to pay for his kids’ haircuts.
