Q&A: How did THE MONEY TREE launch go?

What It’s About

What it’s like launching a book during a pandemic.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1288

A listener checks in to ask how my recent pandemic-timing book launch went. Short version: it was challenging!

I experienced some variables that were totally unfamiliar to me. At the same time, I’m often talking about finding the opportunity in the midst of uncertainty—so of course, I have to be able to apply that encouragement to myself. What did I learn, and what’s next?

“I always appreciate how open you are about your successes and failures, and I’m wondering how that applies to your latest book launch. What did you learn, and what do you wish you had done differently? And what was it like trying to talk about a book while everyone’s attention was on COVID-19? “

Q&A: How to sell an online birth preparation course?

What It’s About

A listener wants to revisit an old side hustle idea. What should he consider?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1283

A listener in the UK has recently dusted off a project he worked on with his wife a few years ago.

It’s a birth preparation program, and his new goal is to take it online. Unfortunately, he’s not seeing the results he’d like. Let’s take more of a look…

“Hey, Chris, this is James from Bristol in the U.K.. I’ve been loving your Side hustle book and make my way through it. I’ve got an idea which I think is feasible, profitable and persuasive. It was an online birth preparation program that my wife and I developed four or five years ago, and it was actually not very good side hustle insofar as it took years and years and cost a fortune for us to get up and online. Now when we actually got it online, we didn’t manage to sell more than a handful of subscriptions to this birth preparation program, and we concluded that that was because people much rather preferred to do these courses in person. Now, with the advent of the Coronavirus, in-person courses are not an option.

So I thought this might be the ideal time for me to relaunch the program, tweaked it a little bit, made it mobile optimized to see if people would be more open to signing up given that they couldn’t attend in-person courses. So I did all that over the course of a month and I tried to stick to the guidelines you set and side hustle and lo and behold, I still haven’t had any takers. I’m using Google ads to advertise the course. And my one question is, what one tweak could I make to this online birth preparation program that might make people more women specifically more inclined to to book on the course. Thanks so much. Look forward to hearing her answer. “

TBT: Man Makes $100,000, Five Dollars at a Time

What It’s About

An update from a creative, hard-working freelancer.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1286

Welcome to Throwback Thursday / “Where are they now?” where we take an in-depth look at someone who’s story has evolved considerably since we first featured them.

So far in these features we’ve had a New York City musician with a blog teaching jazz that becomes a multiple six-figure business and an Australian woman who draws houses.

Today, in our latest feature, we’ll hear from a man who specializes in naming businesses. He started out *selling jokes* for $5/each on Fiverr, but he’s come a long way since then.

Listen to today’s episode to hear Dion’s updates…

  • I also wanted to mention one of the resources that Dion refers to. It’s Envato, which describes itself as a marketplace for digital assets such as code scripts, audio files, stock photos or video, and even 3D models. You can see Dion’s portfolio and the themes he sells there here. It reminds me a bit of Creative Market, which we haven’t looked at in a while but could be helpful for someone out there. If you’d like to check it out, that’s Envato.com, or author.envato.com to see the page that focuses more on selling your digital items.

Q&A: Can you say more about imposter syndrome? I’m still struggling!

What It’s About

What is imposter syndrome—and what are some tips for moving past it?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1285

If I could say just one thing to you, it would be that there IS something out there you can make or become.

So much of our lives are limited and constrained, but we also have the chance to rise above. My hope with Side Hustle School is to show you examples and stories of how real people have done that to create financial security. Money isn’t everything, of course. You can apply this thinking in lots of different ways.

The power of observation can take you far, but it also needs to be connected to the willingness to act … and sometimes we are the ones standing in our own way.

So what is this thing called imposter’s syndrome? Today’s caller is wondering about it. She has no shortage of ideas, but feels held back by her own beliefs. This is a common problem … what’s the solution? It’s one of the most common questions I get in different forms.

“I know you’ve mentioned this before, but I honestly think it’s the #1 thing holding me back. Whenever I think about starting my side hustle about urban farming (raising chickens, using community gardens, etc.) I always think, “Well, who am to do this? And why would people want to pay me for information they can get elsewhere … or why would they even consume my videos or read my posts for free?” I know if I could get over this, I’d be really excited to start sharing. Is there any practical advice besides “Just start”??”

Office Manager Cleans Up With Etsy Soap Store

What It’s About

An experienced traveler raises the bar, combining her love of travel and soap making.

Words of Wisdom

Hear what Julie has to say about selling on Etsy: “Having an Etsy store is work and it requires consistency and discipline. If you don’t have that or the time to devote to it, then it’s probably not going to be worth it. Work hard, hustle, make mistakes, learn from them, and continue to make better products.”

Fun Fact

Historians date the earliest discovery of soap to ancient Babylon around 2800BC. The first soap recipe consisting of water, alkali and cassia oil was discovered on a Babulonian clay tablet and has been dated at 2200 BC. Clearly humans have cared about cleanliness for a long time.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1284
Several years ago, Julie Sanchez was working as an English teacher while living in Shanghai, China. The job was fun and interesting but had one big downside: it wasn’t great for making the social connections she craved as an expat in the city. In an effort to meet people who weren’t her students, she signed up for a soap-making workshop. Little did she know she’d end up loving it.

Eventually she returned home to the U.S., settling into a new job as an office manager for a non-profit. The job paid the bills so that she could go about enjoying the rest of her life. But even that became difficult when her life turned into a soap opera.

A failed relationship made her reassess things, and she looked to do something new and adventurous. You see, being back home was tough for Julie. Before China she’d lived in both Belgium and Japan and visited many other countries in between.

She decided to combine her nomadic history with her love of soap making. Specifically, she wanted to create fragranced soaps inspired by scents from around the world. She set aside one hundred and fifty dollars to buy soap molds, mold-pour bases, and fragrant oils. Then, she got to creating.

The techniques Julie learned back in China quickly came back to her and it didn’t take long to produce her first successful bar. She called it “Amsterdam.” It was made using hemp seed oil and smelled like cannabis, something the city is famous for. But even then, she wasn’t viewing her hobby as a business opportunity. For now, it was merely a passion project, and it remained that way for another year while she experimented with different scents and oils.

What stopped Julie from doing this earlier was her desire for everything to be perfect. Finally, she decided: just go for it! In mid-2018 she summoned the courage to open her own Etsy store, calling it the Adventuress Soap Co.

She expects these sales to double in her second full year of business. While some businesses are all washed up due to the coronavirus pandemic, Julie’s is doing better than ever! With more people at home, more people are online shopping and her sales have increased. While it isn’t generating enough income for her to leave her day job quite yet, she’s had her best months yet since the craziness started.

The increase isn’t just due to luck. The whole time, Julie has been expanding her range of soaps, and even introducing new product lines in the form of lip balms, perfume oils and many more. All inspired by scents from around the world.

MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:

  • Like other makers and artists, Julie sells her soap through Etsy.

Q&A: How should I launch a gift box service for new moms?

What It’s About

A listener seeks advice on what platform they should use to launch a giftbox service.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1283

Welcome to a new week!

As mentioned, last week, our Classroom series will now take place every other Monday. I’ve been getting a lot of questions from listeners, and I want to catch up to answer as many as possible.

In today’s episode, a listener has an idea to sell gift boxes to new moms. Should she start selling on Etsy, make her own website, or something else?

“Hi, Chris. This is Sara from Florida, and I’ve been listening to show for a while and finally had an idea and passion about based on my personal experience. I’m thinking about starting a side hustle in the gift box market to appeal to new moms. Oftentimes, people forget that not only is a baby born, but the mom is born to and she could also use some TLC.

My question as I begin my research process is do you think it’s wise to start a new venture on a platform such as Etsy with a captive audience? Or do you think it makes more sense to build your own Web site and work to drive traffic through social media ads, etc.? Or is it perhaps both things and look forward to hearing your answers as they build up my idea?”

Dancer Waltzes Into Staffing Agency for Performers

What It’s About

A dancer choreographs her talent in job recruitment into a staffing agency.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Kristal has some important advice regarding relationship building, “support your community and they will support you back. Mustard Lane has thrived because of a strong reputation among industry professionals spanning many different industries. Empower those you network with!”

Fun Fact

Well over eight million people live across New York’s five boroughs. With that many people in such close proximity, even tried and true business models like staff recruitment can find success by focusing on a specific niche.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1282
Thirteen years ago Kristal Mallookis moved to New York City after graduating as a dance major from the University of Colorado. She had big aspirations in the Big Apple, one of which was to make it as a professional dancer. She was convinced that in no time at all her schedule would be full of auditions.

But soon, she encountered the reality of living in one of the most expensive cities in the world. The cost of living was piling up. So, after six months of slow dancing, Kristal decided to pick up some part-time work to make ends meet.

To find it, she looked on Craigslist for odd jobs that paid in cash. She came across a gig handing out flyers for a local cafe. It looked easy, it was close by and perhaps most importantly, it wouldn’t interfere with her plans of dominating the city through dance. Kristal took the job and danced all the way to the bank.

As the weeks went on Kristal kept a lookout for more odd jobs, eventually being recommended to Cafe Metro, a popular NYC chain. They needed someone bright and friendly to be their “sampler.” That is, someone to grab the attention of passers-by and offer them a taste of the delicious coffees that awaited inside. Kristal fit the bill, complete with a fake Italian accent!

Once again, she turned out to be a natural. She began to realize that creative performers like herself were well suited to this type of work.

The problem was, Kristal was only one person. She couldn’t possibly take on all the hours she was offered, and stay on top of her dancing.

But… she was well connected. The business owners who knew Kristal, also knew that she’d be able to find someone reliable them if she was unavailable.

The enthusiasm she’d built for helping people find jobs began to overshadow her desire to become a dancer. Kristal started looking at expanding this ‘staff recruitment’ thing into a real business. She already had the supply chain from the businesses and the staff from her friends and colleagues.

All she needed was a name to tie it all together. She chose Mustard Lane, by combining two of her favorite Beatles songs, Mean Mr. Mustard and Penny Lane.

Mustard Lane would make money by sourcing staff for a business’s needs. Kristal would look to her pool of performers to see who fit the bill. On finding someone suitable, she’d sign them up for the gig and bill the business for the time the performer spent working for them. The money she made would come from a percentage of the hourly fee.

There was no shortage of staffing agencies in New York, but her point of difference was that she’d target side gigs for aspiring performers. Work that could be done at unusual hours and lent itself to their innate talents. She continued to use her network to drum up business, and for the next several years she operated using only her cell phone.

To this day Kristal has performed zero marketing, outside word of mouth.

Now, she employs two full-time staff members and her business makes mid-six figures per year. She has a dedicated office in Manhattan and works with performers in over thirty other cities from afar.

Q&A: How should my students register for an online art class?

What It’s About

A listener wants to know the best platform to register students online.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1281

When it comes to DIY website building tools (Squarespace, Wix, etc.), many of them have similar features. Is the same true of online registration tools?

“Hi, Chris. This is Susan at Art with Susan. I remember a while back you did a comparison of website builders and really the upshot of what you said was that it doesn’t much matter. Just pick one and go with it. I wonder if you feel that same way about registration systems.

I’m running online classes and I want people to be able to register easily and seamlessly pay where they are and not have to keep typing their information over and over again every time they register. Is it is this also the type of thing? Just pick one and go with it. Or maybe there is some comparison shopping. I’d love to hear what you have to say. Thank you. “

Q&A: Help! People keep stealing and reposting my photos

What It’s About

A listener wants to protect their images. What should they do?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1280

Today’s caller is a photographer who’s concerned about people reposting their images without permission. What’s the best response in these situations?

I hear a lot of variations of this question, whether it’s about my own work (am I concerned about piracy) or from people who are just starting out and want to protect their hard-earned intellectual property.

“Hi this is Greg from Sydney and I recently discovered this show and really enjoying the helpful content (and puns). I wanted to ask you about a problem I’m having with people keep stealing my images and reposting them without credit.

I’m a photographer and put in a lot of work on the images I share online. People like them … but it seems they like them too much, because they keep posting them without giving me any credit. How can I get sites like Instagram to take them down? And is there anything I can do to reduce the photo thieves in the first place, or should I just not worry about it? Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks Chris.”

TBT: These “Sweatpant Overalls” Produce Joy and Extra Pockets

What It’s About

An update from the exuberant creator of “Swoveralls.”

Notes from Chris

Episode 1279

Welcome to Throwback Thursday / “Where are they now?” where we take an in-depth look at someone who’s story has evolved considerably since we first featured them.

So far in these features we’ve had a New York City musician with a blog teaching jazz that becomes a multiple six-figure business and an Australian woman who draws houses.

Today, in our latest feature, we’ll hear from Kyle Bergman, who had a vision to create men’s sweatpant overalls, or as he called them, “Swoveralls.”

Listen to today’s episode to hear Kyle’s updates…
