Q&A: Why do online courses cost so much … or so little?

What It’s About

Today’s caller is confused about the wide range of online course pricing.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1598

Welcome to a new week!

Over the past 1,500 episodes we’ve featured more than 100 online courses, and there’s quite a range in pricing.

I’ve been working on some new course outlines myself, and also thinking through this question. As part of making the decision, you don’t only want to think about what’s “fair” or what your time is worth … ideally you want to arrive at a final price that customers feel is a perfectly rational price for them to pay in exchange for access to the experience. How do you decide? Is there an optimal range?

“Hi Chris, this is Larry from Vancouver and I’ve followed the show for years. I’ve heard many case studies on the show about online courses. One thing I’ve noticed is that the pricing for these courses is all over the map! Some cost $50 or $100, others are $1,000 or more. For example, you recently had someone who does voiceover work share their story in a Failure Friday episode. I went to his site and he sells his courses for $3,000, plus a monthly fee to keep accessing them after a year. Part of me thinks, “That’s outrageous” and another part thinks “That’s ingenious.” Why is there little consistency in pricing all of these courses—and how does someone decide what their price should be?”

“Bee Man of New Jersey” Buzzes Into Money Hive

What It’s About

A hobbyist turned bee-liever finds honey teaching the art of the hive.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Frank charges $15 for one pound of his honey, an intentional price point. He says that “by charging a premium price, you’re letting your customers know that you have a premium product. Some people will think it’s too much to pay for honey, but there will be even more people who think it’s a great product and will gladly pay you full price.”

Fun Fact

In its lifetime one bee will make about 1/12 a teaspoon of honey. Bees must collect nectar from about 2 million flowers to make 1 pound of honey. To visit 2 million flowers, bees fly 55,000 miles, which is twice around the earth!

Notes from Chris

Episode 1597
Frank Mortimer got his start in beekeeping the way a lot of folks do—with just one hive, a bit of research, and lifelong desire to keep bees. Fast-forward to today and he’s a busy little worker bee with speaking engagements, a forthcoming book, and naturally a sweet extra income of more than $1,000 a month.

Frank had been interested in bees since he was a child, and he set about learning as much as he could through books, attending meetings of local beekeeping clubs, and connecting with more experienced beekeepers.

After picking up hive #1 quickly realized he could enlist his bees to offset the costs of this new hobby by selling the honey they produced. He also enlisted his five year old son to sell the honey from the front yard, lemonade stand style, and in his second year of beekeeping they sold 32 pounds of honey.

Now, a number of years and fifteen additional hives later, Frank sells more than 1,800 pounds of honey a year. He decided early on not to compete with mass-produced supermarket honey and instead market his as a local, quasi-luxury product. Frank’s honey costs around $15 a jar and is sold at speciality stores and gift shops near his northern New Jersey home.

But honey isn’t the only product that has sweetened the pot for Frank. With the help of his wife, Frank branched out and began manufacturing lip balm and hand cream right in his own kitchen. They consulted online tutorials and found all the supplies they needed online, and after a few weeks of tweaking the recipes had two additional products to add to their revenue stream.

Before the pandemic he was able to attend bee club meetings and festivals where he could sometimes sell up to $1,000 of product in a single day! Now Frank relies heavily on Facebook and Instagram, posting in local groups about his honey and giving educational talks to bee groups to help get his name out there.

Wait, educational talks? That’s right. Those talks have led Frank to become known as “The Bee Man” and he eventually became the President of his local bee club. He also became a certified Master Beekeeper through a program at Cornell University, and with those credentials has taught classes at the New York Botanical Garden. Eventually Frank’s expertise and reputation even led to a book deal. That’s right, check out Bee People and the Bugs They Love wherever you shop for books.

This reputation helped him overcome the challenge of selling his honey at $15 a pound. As Frank the Bee Man becoming somewhat of a local legend in New Jersey, people are happy to pay a premium price for his quality product.

From a childhood fascination with bees to that front yard “Honey Stand” operated by his son and his first sale to a specialty store, to his cosmetic products and book deal becoming “The Bee Man,” Frank was able to harness the energy of his hives to turn a hobby into a reliable income— which as the old timers might say is just “the bee’s knees!”

Q&A: Should I use Etsy’s new platform or build my own website?

What It’s About

Today’s listener is trying to determine the best platform to sell her wares.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1596

From time to time we talk about different website platforms including WordPress.com, Squarespace, and Wix among others. There’s also Shopify, which specializes in eCommerce.

Today’s listener has a question about one that is made by Etsy. She’s had her own shop for a while and wants to branch out—what’s the best way to do that?

Disclaimer: almost all of these companies have sponsored Side Hustle School in the past. They’re all good options!

“Hi, Chris, this is Bethany from Canberra, Australia. I’ve been listening to the show for the last four years. I love the daily updates and the tips you have for people starting a side hustle. I’ve just opened an Etsy shop, monogramming blankets, throws and scarves. I would like to have my own website too. Etsy offers a website platform called Pattern. It looks relatively easy to use, but I wonder if I should use something totally outside of Etsy. Thanks for the show and I look forward to hearing from you.”

Failure Friday: “If it worked once, it should work twice… right?”

What It’s About

Take a timeout to hear this failure story from a successful parenting blogger.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1595

I believe we can learn as much from failure as we can from success, if not more. It’s with this principle in mind that we’re starting Failure Friday, a collection of short stories all about mistakes, missteps, disasters, and of course, failure.

Just like our Throwback Thursday segment, you’ll hear directly from side hustlers who have struggled to get something off the ground. They’ll tell you a short story of something that went very wrong.

The stories will vary, but often it starts with an idea, what they thought would happen and what really happened—and of course, what they learned.

I applaud their courage! I’ll share some of my failure stories along the way as well.

Today’s short story features Jeff Campbell from Austin, Texas. We told the successful story of his transition to full-time blogging on Episode #718. But they had some struggles along the way. Let’s hear from them about one of those struggles…

TBT: The 7-Figure Dachshund Apparel Business

What It’s About

A howling good update from the owner of a dacshund-theme apparel company.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1594

Welcome to Throwback Thursday / “Where are they now?” where we take an in-depth look at someone who’s story has evolved considerably since we first featured them.

Recently, we’ve featured handkerchiefs, energy gum, candles, and a budget bridal blogger. Last week, we heard from the owner of Sweet Afternoon Bakeshop in Toronto, Canada. Have your cake and listen to it too!

Today, in our latest feature, we’ll hear from Claire Wolfson in Long Beach, California. Together with her husband and business partner, she runs Bean Goods, which sells dachshund-themed apparel for dogs and humans. The original story, “Dachshund-Loving Duo Designs Doxie Apparel” taught me a lot about the world of dachshunds.

As a fun fact, their designer is Dox Design, the graphic designer for dogs, who we featured long ago and then also in a TBT episode (#1335). Wow! What a small world of small dogs…

What’s happened since? Let’s hear directly from Claire. I’ll be back at the end to wrap us up.

Listen to today’s episode to hear Claire’s updates…

Q&A: “I watch The Bachelor, and I want to bet on it…”

What It’s About

Today’s caller sees the profit potential betting on a popular TV show. Can you smell the roses?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1593

Did you see the latest episode of The Bachelor? I couldn’t believe when Avril showed up in the wrong dress for the date with Baker. It was such a drama and then later he seemed to be spending a lot of time with Kirsten in the Fantasy Suite. Bachelor Nation, I was so surprised!

Oh—sorry. Back to Side Hustle School.

Our listener is one of millions of online fans who watch every week—this show has countless spinoffs–and she has an idea to start an online marketplace where people bet on the outcome. There’s a term for this: it’s called a predictions market, and that’s what we’ll discuss in this episode.

“Hey Chris, this is Chelsea from Reno. I have an idea for you that you’ve probably haven’t heard before: I want to start some kind of online marketplace where people can bet on episodes of the Bachelor. Millions of people watch the show every week, and there are countless spinoffs. My girlfriends and I are always chatting about who’s going to be eliminated next, and who we think is going to win. So how can I turn this into an online project? I’m thinking I won’t try to bet one way or another, but instead I’ll be the middle-woman who facilitates the bets and takes a commission. The only problem is … I have no idea how to do this! Is there a ready-made platform that will make this very simple? Please say yes! Thanks!”

A Doggie Bag With a Twist

What It’s About

A dog lover creates an alternative doggie bag to deal with a smelly situation.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Lisa encourages other side hustlers to “be passionate about whatever it is they’d like to invest in – whether the side hustle is service or product oriented. If you’re not, then you’ll never get past the challenges you’ll encounter. Make sure your side hustle fits with your interests, lifestyle and personal values.”

Fun Fact

Lisa says one of the best parts of her hustle is seeing her sales go international. So far, she’s had orders from Canada and the UK!

Notes from Chris

Episode 1592
Lisa Bast never had enough Kleenex or waste bags when she walked her dog, a Goldendoodle named Micah. Because she has bad allergies, her nose runs whenever she’s outside, so she needs Kleenex and she got tired of stuffing tissues into her pocket. She wanted a carryall not only for bagged waste but with separate pockets for other stuff she had to carry.

Lisa did a focus group with friends and family member who have dogs to get their input. She noticed there was no good solution. She didn’t see anything that had compartments for everything in a compact style, so she saw a market opportunity and decided to launch the Woofpack dog walking accessory bag.

In fall 2015, Lisa started prototyping. She worked with a young Amish man through a connection with her SCORE counselor. (In case you don’t know, SCORE is a network for volunteer business experts and mentors.) The Amish man made boat tarps and had the type of material and expertise needed to make her prototypes. She purchased about six different handbag designs at Macy’s and integrated the best features of each until she was happy with the design.

Prototyping was ruff at first. In fact, it took seven prototypes to get it right. Lisa needed to find a material that was moisture resistant and contained odor from bagged waste for the inner compartment. Still, she knew she was barking up the right tree, so she did a lot of research and finally found an antimicrobial material which is used in hospital settings to line the inner compartment.

Lisa used about $1,500 of her savings to launch in summer 2017. Of that, she spent $1,300 on a digital agency for help with website design and marketing. A hundred dollars went to inventory and $75 went to prototypes. She also spent $25 on basic website hosting. She used the basic plan with Shopify.

The first sale was from a friend who purchased through the website. Lisa was so nervous about getting it right that instead of printing out the prepaid postage, she went to the post office to mail the package herself. She’s now worked out the kinks of order fulfilment and brings in approximately $1,000 per month, which for now she’s putting back into the business.

Growing the business is a passion for Lisa and she hopes to take it full time one day. She’s gotten her product into two small pet stores in the Cleveland, Ohio area and is hoping to bark into bigger pet retailers.

For now, many of the chains have told her they are holding off on introducing new products into their stores because of Covid. As they say, don’t stop retrieving.

Q&A: Should I start a Substack newsletter?

What It’s About

Today’s listener is eyeing the stacks of money that can be made from paid newsletters.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1591

Welcome to a new week!

Blogging is cool again, at least it seems that way. You may have some reports about journalists who’ve gone freelance and are earning large sums of money through newsletters.

The most common platform these newsletters use is Substack, which allows independent writers to publish free and paid versions of their newsletter.

How much money are we talking about—and should you look into this? That’s what today’s listener wants to know.

“Hi Chris, this is Sara and I just recently found your show. Long ago I had a blog, and then it went the way most blogs go … to the blog graveyard of neglected posts. I enjoyed it while it lasted, but I got busy with other stuff—and then I figured that blogging was dead anyway, so I should focus my side hustle attention on other channels like YouTube.

However, I’m been hearing a lot about Substack. As best as I can tell, it’s a newsletter service that does a lot of what blogs always did, except people pay for it. Am I right? And if I wanted to start a Substack newsletter myself, what should I know in advance?”

Social Worker Finds Calm, Makes Cash with Business Course

What It’s About

A therapist helps others start their own private practice.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Ariana encourages fellow side hustlers to get support from their community. “Let people love and encourage you along the way.”

Fun Fact

Ariana is a single mom, and her kids interrupt many sessions with clients or other therapists. She’s had to pull some hilarious moves to make it look like it’s the camera freezing, and not really her kids trying to kill each other in the background. Still, after 2020, she thinks a lot of people can relate.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1590
Ariana Lloyd is a psychiatric social worker at a VA hospital, and a clinical supervisor for therapists. Many therapists don’t know how to run a business, but she’s that rare person who loves both therapy and business and wanted to help professionals improve in each area.

When two of her colleagues came to her for help setting up their own practices, it sparked an idea. Ariana realized it was deeply satisfying to be a part of their work and to know how many people they could reach. Plus, with all of the increased awareness about racism in 2020, she wanted to create something where therapists build a better model altogether.

Ariana’s new project, Lloyd Collective, has two parts. One is an eight-week program where therapists learn how to set up their own liberation-focused private practice. The program includes videos, worksheets, and resources. Therapists do the work on their own time, then join her each week for two-hour online sessions along with a few of their peers. They can also submit questions to her during the week.

The other part of Lloyd Collective is a monthly workshop and fundraiser. It’s a free, one-hour online workshop each month where Ariana and a clinician teach on topics related to therapeutic practice and business development. They pause in the middle of the workshop and do a collective community donation to a chosen organization. Lloyd Collective then matches the donations.

Lloyd Collective launched in October 2020. To get started, Ariana spent $1,500 on a business coaching course that helped her conceptualize her program, and around $200 on filing an LLC. So far, it’s brought in more than $10,000.

Ariana’s clinical supervision private practice started as a side hustle, too. After going through a divorce, she wanted to create something that allowed her to spend more time with her two kids. That eventually became her main source of income and helped her realize that starting and running a business can be just as much a vehicle for healing as therapy can.

Going forward, Ariana is excited to settle into the business, slow down, and get a dog. She also has a new low-pressure side hustle selling things on Facebook Marketplace.

Quote of the Day
"put something into the world that you feel genuinely passionate about and proud of. If you are not passionate about what you are contributing to the world, you can’t reasonably expect that others will buy into it either."

Q&A: Do I have to tell my customers where I’m based?

What It’s About

A listener from Europe wonders if his American customers need to know his location.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1589

Does it matter where you live if you’re selling something online?

I hear variations of this question from time to time, along with a related one: “Does it matter how old I am?”

The short answer to both of them is “Not so much” … but let’s look more specifically at this listener’s question. He’s in Europe and wants to sell to Americans. What does he need to know?

“Hi Chris, this is Mark and I’ve been listening to the show all the way from Poland. I’m planning to start an ecommerce business. My focus is on the U.S. market because it’s a much larger population, ecommerce there is far ahead of everywhere else, and I can use Fulfillment by Amazon to get my products out. But of course, I don’t only want to sell items one time anonymously through Amazon—I want to build a dedicated following to the brand itself, so that customers might hear of me from another channel but then start coming directly to the website. The only thing I’m worried about is—do I need to be clear about where I’m based? Does it matter that I’m here and they’re over there, as long as they’re happy with the product? Thanks for your help Chris. “
