Within only 30 minutes, I got a callback! I was completely unprepared for the call, but they ended up wanting to move forward and I officially got my first client! It’s only an additional few hundred dollars per month, and we are on a month-to-month contract, so they could end at anytime—nonetheless, getting such a quick response motivated me to keep going.

    Devon: “Well, it’s all happening! I am using Kickstarter to fund the first print-run of FLUSTER, and hope to turn it into a side-hustle. 

    Fluster is a social card game that uses unusual questions to inspire thought-provoking and hilarious conversations. It creates memorable and deeply connective moments between humans.

    So, we’re now live on Kickstarter! Needless to say, we’re pretty excited, and it’s all hands on deck. I dream of the day I can say I became a side-hustler. And I appreciate your part in helping me get to this point where I can say that it feels like it’s actually on the horizon with over $6,500 from 156 backers!”

Sometimes it’s helpful when you’re starting out to imagine who your ideal customer would be for any given product or service:

  • Who will your side hustle serve? Somewhere out there, there’s a single ideal customer for your offer, also known as an avatar. You want to learn as much as you can about this person so that you can better serve them. What are their goals? What problems do they have? If you can solve one of their biggest problems, what would the best possible scenario for them look like?

    Start with them, take them out for an imaginary cup of coffee, and keep them in mind as you build the rest of the project. Don’t hesitate to go deep to understand their goals, hopes, problems, and fears.

    It may even help to write directly to your avatar, focusing on who they are and what you intend to do to help.
