CLASSROOM: How Will You Fulfill Orders?

What It’s About

You made a sale— great! Let’s talk about a plan to fulfill that order (and future orders).

Notes from Chris

Episode 1220

When someone places an order … what comes next?

First of all, there’s much celebration! But then presumably, there’s some amount of work.

A future episode will look at workflows in more detail. For now, let’s just consider some really basic steps you might need to take.

This is important because a clear process reassures buyers that they made the right decision. You want to communicate the message: “You’re in good hands. This was a wise decision that you just made.”

It’s also important because if you invest time and energy on the front end, thinking through product delivery, you can save a lot more time and be more efficient in the long-run.

For years I was terrible about this. I finally forced myself to not launch anything unless I had a clear plan for follow-up, delivery, execution.

So let’s consider how this might work for you. I’ll give you two examples, one for a product and the other for a service.

Listen to today’s Classroom episode to learn more…

THIS WEEK’S ASSIGNMENT:

Understand how you will fullfill an order, whether for a product or service. Think about this before you get lots of orders, and then you’ll be better poised to celebrate when you do.

Tasmanian Insurance Manager Sells Reusable Cutlery Holders

What It’s About

Literally put a fork in this hustle that promotes reusable cutlery.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Do you have a product with an education barrier? Listen to Ngaire’s experience and wisdom; “Sometimes you need to explain away the psychological barriers your customers might have. Those who are opposed to using second-hand utensils (even though they are safe) forget that they do that each time they dine out. All people need is a slight reminder of what they are already doing.”

Fun Fact

You’d think that food festivals are where people would be interested in buying metal cutlery to eat their gourmet food with, but Ngaire found that to be untrue. People at such festivals don’t have a budget for an unexpected purchase.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1219
Living in Tasmania, Australia, Ngaire [Ny-ree] Burgess has always believed that the world has enough of everything already in it. So when this insurance manager and mom of three went out on a weekend with the kids, she would bring along a few forks and spoons in the car.

See, the family hated using plastic takeaway cutlery. Not only was it unsustainable, it was also not comfortable to use. Metal utensils were just better, and as she would say, “If you’ve paid good money for a gourmet plate of food at a food festival why not enjoy it as much as possible with quality cutlery?”

Cutlery wraps weren’t a new idea. Making them didn’t take advanced sewing skills but it did require patience and time. Looking up basic patterns on a website, she modified and tweaked them to various sizes in order to cater to every need. Over time, she even came up with her own designs.

The first place Ngaire decided to sell her products was at a school fair. It was a small and risk-free step that would give her the courage to continue on her business which eventually became known as Pocket Picnic. Sitting at her stall, she dreaded someone walking past and laughing at what she had to offer.

Worse, she didn’t invest in a tent and had to sit under an umbrella out in the open, cold and miserable. But weather and imposter syndrome aside, Ngaire ended the day with $350 in revenue and was more than satisfied. It gave her the confidence to keep going.

But Ngaire also had some luck on her side. She managed to secure a stall at the popular Salamanca market, which is frequented by thousands of tourists, most of whom were looking to buy something local. This was a step up from the usual stall permits she secured since it required a regular commitment over two years, but Ngaire decided to bet on herself. Thankfully, things worked out for her as she now generates over $2,000/month from her business selling cutlery holders.

Looking back, the best part of starting Pocket Picnic has been setting an example to her three kids. They are proud of her for starting a business and also proud that it is eco-friendly. In fact, Ngaire hopes that their first job can be at the market working with her.

By the way, I saved another best part for last: Ngaire’s startup costs were just $5. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel to launch her business. Because ideas, like utensils, are reusable.

Q&A: I’d like to sell a toolkit to sole proprietors … what do you think?

What It’s About

A listener looks for feedback on an idea to sell a digital toolkit.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1218

Today’s listener has an idea to sell a toolkit to help sole proprietors become more efficient. What are the pros and cons of this idea?

As a reminder, I too can fall into the habit of asking if something is a “good” idea, and generally speaking I don’t think that’s the most important characteristic when considering ideas.

First, you don’t just want a good idea, you want a great idea. You want the best possible idea for you at this time. There are lots of good ideas … in fact, there’s a surplus of them.

Second, “good” is a little generic. When you’re considering side hustle ideas, you want to focus on feasible, profitable ones. Do you see a clear path for where you are now and how this idea could make money in a relatively short period of time? That’s what you want to consider.

“Hi, Chris. This is Jair from Portland, Oregon. I love your show, even though I’ve just been listening to it recently. I’m thinking about starting a side hustle to help sole proprietors become more efficient in operating their business by providing them with a toolkit of templates and easy steps to improve their processes. I think it would be valuable to them, but since I don’t know yet how to reach them. Do you think it is a good idea?”

Q&A: Is reselling gift cards a viable idea?

What It’s About

Selling unused gift cards seems like a no brainer. But is there more to it?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1217

Welcome to a new month!

Today’s listener is thinking about buying and reselling unused gift cards. It sounds like an interesting idea, but is he missing something obvious?

Oh, and let this be a reminder that something you can do to support small businesses during a difficult time is to purchase gift cards. This helps them out with cash flow, one of the main reasons why some of them go out of business.

Just don’t be like me and buy gift cards but then forget to use them. Or maybe I just need to sell them to this guy?

“I have an idea to go door to door buying unused gift cards and then reselling them. At first I was thinking of making this as a school fundraiser for my son, but now thinking that it could be more. What do you think? Am I missing something obvious?”

Q&A: Where and how do I promote my new app?

What It’s About

Promoting a new app is the same as promoting any other product … right?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1215

Today’s caller is wondering about where to go to promote a wellness app she’s made. How is promoting an app different from anything else … or is it?

What are some ideas for her? What about you—do you have a Simple Marketing Plan?

“Hi, Chris. I’ve been listening to your show and your books on Audible for a couple years now. They’ve been absolutely inspiring because of your books and podcasts. I finally started my own Side hustle, which is a meal planning app for people who love to eat mainly paleo or whole and natural foods. I combined my passion for software development, photography and cooking and this app and I’ve really enjoyed working on it more than anything.

I finally had the courage to submit the app to the app store. It was approved early this week. My big question is where and how do I promote my app so that people find it among the millions of apps in the app store? I have some ideas, but not sure which would be the best use of my time or money. Should I use social media? Should I use ads, YouTube, word of mouth, T-shirts? The app has short instructional videos for the recipes, so I thought about creating a YouTube channel and posting those and promote through YouTube. I also have Instagram account, but I probably am not using that correctly yet. I can’t wait to hear back from you. Thank you for all the inspiration.”

Writing Teacher Rolls Dice On Metaphor Game

What It’s About

Educational themed dice to inspire and expand the mind, metaphorically speaking.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Outsource. Get help. Hear from Taylor, “Don’t think you can do it all yourself! I thought I had decent graphic design skills, but I am not as good as the professionals. However, my skills are good enough to explain MY vision to them so I can say, “See what I mean? Make something like this, except BETTER!””

Fun Fact

Similes and metaphor are often confused. A simile is a metaphor but not all metaphors are similes. Similes use like or as to compare two things whereas a metaphor is more direct. An example of simile is ‘life is like a box of chocolates’ where as a metaphor might be ‘she is a shining star’.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1214
Taylor Mali works full time as a creative writing teacher. Needless to say he has a grasp on the written word, a skill he loves passing onto the younger generation. His classes encompass everything from storytelling to poetry.

The problem, though, is that not all of his students share his passion. In fact, for a while, he felt like most of them didn’t even want to be in his classes. He noticed many of the reluctant students had a common complaint: they couldn’t come up with ideas or inspiration for their writing.

One day, while teaching a class on metaphors, one student even went so far as to say she couldn’t do it because she was a ‘math person,’ not a writing person. Taylor refused to accept this. Deep down he believed that all of us have a hidden Hemingway (or Austen) waiting to be unlocked. It was just a matter of finding the right tool to do the unlocking.

Using paper, he created some makeshift dice consisting of different words. Students could roll the dice, be presented with three words and combine them to create a metaphor. For example a student might roll the words; ‘Love’, ‘Disturbing’ and ‘Party Clown’ which could become the metaphor ‘Love is a disturbing party clown’. The idea was to make metaphors fun so the kids would have a great time learning the concept.

It worked, and Taylor decided that this was an idea worth pursuing as a side hustle. It was a light in a dark room.

To start, he needed to have the dice properly manufactured. He didn’t think people would pay for a few folded sheets of paper they could easily make themselves. So he started looking for places to have a prototype created. He found a Polish dice manufacturer on Google, and set aside fifteen hundred dollars of his own money. Even though this wasn’t peanuts, it felt like a cheap shot: he had very little to lose and everything to gain.

Taylor’s vision for the product had finally been realized but the work had just begun. By now it was nearly two and a half years since the inception of the idea and it was time to ramp up marketing. Taylor tried everything, pushing harder on social media, in-person demos at conferences, pitching to other teachers, Amazon and Google ads. You name it, he tried it.

They all began to work on some level, but one really unique growth channel was the pay it forward system. A teacher could purchase a set of dice and also contribute a small amount of money toward a set for an underprivileged teacher or school who couldn’t afford it. This method worked well and the sense of altruism helped them grow.

Within the next year he was selling one thousand dollars per month worth of Metaphor Dice. There was very little slowing down because within the next year this had grown to over five thousand dollars every month, which is where this project is at today.

More recently, Taylor has launched a Metaphor Dice iOS app to get the concept into the hands of more people. Success is a ladder: you can get to the top as long as you keep climbing.

CLASSROOM: Questions to Ask Manufacturers and Vendors

What It’s About

Looking to partner with an overseas manufacturer or vendor to develop a product? Start with these questions.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1213

If you end up working with a manufacturer, overseas factory, or some other vendor—what do you need to know?

Throughout the history of the show, we’ve heard from a number of individuals who have braved the waters of international manufacturing. It’s much, much easier than you might think. These days, thanks to the wonders of technology and globalization in general, platforms like Alibaba allow you to quickly filter through thousands of options in search of the best partner for your idea.

One of my favorite stories is the dice-throwing pastor (Ep. 352: Role-Playing Pastor Rolls The Dice On $2800/Month Hustle) who is feeling burdened with all of his side jobs, then gets the idea to make and sell custom dice for fellow tabletop gamers.

So what do you need to know?

Most importantly, you want to ask specific questions.

The information you’re looking for is: are they reliable, will they be a good partner, are they financially solvent, etc. —but those questions will usually result in a positive answer regardless of whether that’s the real story or not. (“Of course I’m reliable!”)

I’ll give you a list of those questions in this episode, but here’s something else that’s critical: however you ask, you want to make sure they understand what you’re looking for.

A lot of manufacturers and vendors will just say “yes, we can do that” meaning “we’ll figure it out later.” You want to make sure they understand up front—otherwise you’ll have an issue with quality, timeliness, or cost … maybe all three.

Choreographer Moonlights as Voiceover Artist

What It’s About

A music theatre director takes her own cues and makes over six figures as a voice actress on Fiverr.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Looking to start your own Fiverr career, Kate’s got some helpful tips; “Fiverr is always a bit of a guessing game since I don’t always know exactly what’s being weighted in the algorithm at any given moment. Investing in solid equipment, tending to messages and reviews as quickly as possible, and constantly improving my product has truly the best way to ensure success.”

Fun Fact

Kate offered to buy her colleague dinner in exchange for her getting a behind the scenes look at what voice artists do. That was her first encounter with voice-over work, and the rest as they say, is history.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1212
Kate Quinn has never known a life without freelancing. Back in 2016 she was working a full-time job as a choreographer at a theatre while running her own independent fitness business. One day, she decided she wanted to produce some video content to share on her website. As she began to bring her ideas to life, she realized she needed someone to do voice-over work for those videos. Turning to her network, she asked a colleague at the theater if he might be able to help.

Going through this process made Kate curious. She wanted to learn more about how voiceover gigs worked. So, in exchange for dinner, that colleague offered to show her everything that he was doing behind the scenes.

Kate invested a few hundred dollars to get started, picking up a decent microphone and learning as she went along. She also found some free editing software that offered a solid starting point.

Now she was ready to start recording, but where to get her first customers? She thought about where she was already buying services, and one of those places was Fiverr. Fiverr is an online marketplace for freelance services where users can list small one-off jobs. It was originally designed with the idea that any job would cost just $5, though now jobs can start at any dollar value.

Having had a good experience as a buyer, Kate opened a seller account. As she created her listing, she was mindful to make sure that it was attractive. Her photos had to look great, her descriptions had to be thorough, and the services she offered clearly listed.

Creating a really attractive, well put together seller profile was key to her success. In March 2016, Fiverr served up her first client, and she put the equipment she had purchased to good use. Everything worked as planned, and Kate realized that this could be the start of something big. The more gigs she completed, the more the reviews started to pour in. As people raved about her work, her ranking on Fiverr’s internal algorithm rose.

To Kate, that’s the beauty of Fiverr. When she does her job well and presents clear information, the marketing takes care of itself. As she says, “the platform values excellent work, reviews and clicks, so the better your product and the more people rate you well, the more likely you are to be visible to buyers.”

While she still faces the occasional difficulty with customers and hard to pronounce words—especially when narrating in medical-related videos—Kate has never stopped working hard. She knows it’s worth it when she hears herself in corporate voicemails for companies she uses, or on Spotify marketing various companies. In October, Kate’s business hit six figures for the first time.

Q&A: What can I do with an email list?

What It’s About

A listener is actively building her email list. But now what?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1211

You may have heard me or anyone else say that you should be building an email list. This is almost always a good idea … however, you shouldn’t just build up a list (or lists) and not do anything with them. I’ve done that before, so do as I say and not as I do. When people join your email list, it’s because they want to hear from you.p>

Today’s listener has a coaching service for writers, and has been diligently building an email list—but now she wonders what she should be using it for. What’s the next step?

“Hi, Chris. This is Katy from London. I love the show, especially the new format, which is incredibly helpful. I’ve recently set up a side hustle called Pick Up Your Pen, which is coaching for writers. I want to help writers reach their dream writing goal. So I offer accountability and I help them deal with procrastination, self-doubt and other creative blocks. I’ve just started to build up an email list and my question is what do I actually do with it?”
