Finance Professional Goes Big With Petite Dressing

What It’s About

An investment banker discovers small changes make a huge difference in her business model and profits.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Afraid of making mistakes or failing? Hear from Chi Li on the subject; “Making mistakes is a part of the game that cannot be skipped.”

Fun Fact

Though Chi Li sells petite clothing for women in New York City, her first customer was a man from Canada!

Notes from Chris

Episode 1240
Investment banker Chi Li went through the traditional route of earning an MBA to work at a bank. She found that the work she was doing, while financially rewarding, wasn’t satisfying her creative impulse.

Looking for a side project, she decided to market and sell clothes for petite women. As a woman under 5’4 [162 cm], she found it extremely difficult to find clothing in mainstream shops, even in New York City. Expecting that there would be others like her who faced the same problem, she decided that this was the problem she would tackle.

Her first step was to set up her own online shop and website, PetiteDressing.com, using the Shopify platform. This set her back $500 or so. She probably could have spent more time and done it for less, but time was a scarce resource since her job was so hectic.

Marketing her store and getting web traffic was more challenging. Unlike how she secured her inventory, Chi Li didn’t have first-hand experience with digital marketing that she could lean on. She started running Facebook ads and posting on social media platforms, but these efforts failed to generate even a single sale even after hundreds of dollars were spent.

The twists and turns didn’t stop there. A year into launching Petite Dressing, Chi Li saw that the growth of her blog was far outpacing that of her store. The blog was intended as a marketing channel for her store, not the business itself. But she knew that she needed to increase revenues on her website if this was to be more than a hobby.

With all that traffic, Chi Li started monetizing her blog as well through affiliate marketing and running advertising for brands. This also had the side effect of boosting her own store as she started to get inbound inquiries from independent designers who wanted to cater to petite women.

On her part, this required a big switch in mentality. As an employee in a traditional industry like finance, shaking things up was a sure way to remain stagnant. But in the world of entrepreneurship, she says that you constantly have to find new ways of doing things, whether it’s engaging with customers or generating a new stream of revenue.

This has certainly been true in her case, when she moved from focusing on eCommerce to blogging. In fact she’s now started a YouTube channel since she expects video content to only become more prominent in the long term, and especially with more people are staying home due to the evolving Covid-19 situation. In her words, “making mistakes is a part of the game that cannot be skipped.”

Chi Li never imagined that she would have a profitable blog when she first started out. But now, with over 150,000 monthly visitors to her website and $2,000 in monthly income, she’s gone big catering to smaller women on the side.

Q&A: How can I get more reviews on my Amazon listing?

What It’s About

A listener using FBA needs advice on how to get more reviews. What should she do?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1239

This listener is using Fulfillment by Amazon with some success, but she needs more reviews on her listing page. What can she do to encourage customers to sing her praises?

Great question—reviews matter a lot, especially until you reach a decent number. I’ll give you at least three systematic tips you can use to ask for reviews.

“I need help getting more reviews. Since I’ve been listening to the show, I started researching and then selling using FBA. I can’t say what industry it’s in, but I promise it’s nothing bad—and I need more reviews from customers—real ones. I always ask but the vast majority of people don’t do it, and Amazon won’t give me their contact info to follow-up. Any advice? How can I get more people to leave a review? Thanks and can’t wait to hear from you.”

Q&A: What are some common tax deductions for side hustlers?

What It’s About

No one loves paying taxes … what can you deduct or write off for your side hustle?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1238

Let’s talk about taxes! Love them or hate them … well, I don’t think anyone really *loves* them. Good news: when you operate a side hustle, you may be able to deduct a lot of expenses from your personal tax return.

Today’s caller is wondering about some examples. I’ll give him some! What are some common items you can deduct—and can you do this even when you’re starting up and the business isn’t profitable?

This advice relates primarily to listeners in the U.S., but if you live elsewhere you may be able to take similar deductions. Of course, consult your own advisor to make sure you get the most accurate and relevant info.

“Hi Chris, this is Kevin from Tacoma and I’ve been listening to your show from the beginning and hoping to launch a new side hustle soon. My question is, what are some common tax deductions for side hustlers?

I know you can’t give tax advice, but I’m wondering something: are there some common tax deductions when operating a side business? I started thinking about this when I heard that actors can deduct their outfits and even their haircuts. What can we write off?”

Q&A: What are the new opportunities in a turbulent time?

What It’s About

A listener wants to know how to make the best of these challenging times.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1236

For some reason, some people are still thinking it’s not just business as usual out there… I’m not sure if I missed a memo or something.

Oh, that’s right—the whole world stopped! We’ve all been trapped indoors, at least to varying degrees in different parts of the world. Restaurants and stores are closed, in some places you get arrested or fined if you walk outdoors, and millions of people are working from home, in addition to millions of people who are unemployed or underemployed.

So what does this mean? I’ve talked about it a few times, but people are still wondering.

“Hey there, my name is Dane from Laguna Beach, California, and I’ve actually been listening to Side Hustle School. I found you guys about three or four years ago, back when I was still at my 9-to-5. And since then I’ve actually started a side hustle and it’s taking off now. Right now I’m working in the life coaching space, helping young people become successful in life.”

Virtual Meditation in the Midst of COVID-19

What It’s About

During unusual times, a podcaster and health professional takes a breath and creates an online meditation community.

Words of Wisdom

Brooke highly recommends finding a side hustle that aligns with your skills and talents. She says, “Take the time to figure out what your true gifts are instead of following someone’s else’s blueprint for how to be successful. There is so much messaging around how to be an influencer and an expert… I’m glad that ultimately I created a project where I can do what I do best- learn, connect, gather, and also highlight other people’s genius.”

Fun Fact

Rolfing, Brooke’s day job, was invented by Dr. Ida P. Rolf in the 1940s in order to cope with both her own and her son’s health issues. When Dr. Rolf was alive, she said this about Rolfing: “This is the gospel of Rolfing: When the body gets working appropriately, the force of gravity can flow through. Then, spontaneously, the body heals itself.”

Notes from Chris

Episode 1235
The bodywork practice known as Rolfing began nearly a century ago in the United States. It was invented by Dr. Ida P. Rolfer, a biochemist who was searching for a way to help solve her son’s health problems. Decades later, a 20-something named Brooke Thomas found her way to Rolfing to manage her own chronic pain. All she was hoping for was to find relief from her pain, but she found a whole new vocation.

Brooke was stunned at how well this practice worked for her. She had been dealing with physical and neurological injuries since birth. In her words, getting rid of the pain was euphoric to the point where it felt disorienting!

So began Brooke’s journey with connecting her body and her mind. She began to do Rolfing, also called bodyworking, as a professional.

Eventually, Brooke decided that she wanted to start a podcast for people involved with the manual and movement therapy fields, called Liberated Being. For years, she loved running the podcast. She interviewed all kinds of people in the field, and she kept hearing about embodiment and somatic meditation. Essentially, that is meditation based more on bodily awareness and sensation.

Over her years of podcasting, Brooke kept hearing her listeners say that while the podcast made them feel less alone, they were still craving even more of a community. These people wanted to find others with similar experiences—and Brooke wanted to fill that need.

She reconfigured Liberated Being into an online community that offered live meditations on Sundays, one class every month from a guest teacher, and a social network where members could stay connected.

Brooke could have never anticipated that in just a month and a half after she launched Liberated Being, a pandemic would be running rampant all over the world. More than ever, people would be relying on virtual connection. With the added stress everyone was feeling, she quickly decided to go from group meditation just once a week, to group meditation six days a week.

Not only that, but Brooke quickly expanded the community. Originally, she only planned to open it up to new members once per quarter for about two weeks. She wanted the group to feel more cocoon-like, without new members joining all the time. However, after the crisis began, she decided to open it up to new members throughout the pandemic. As it turns out, both Brooke and the original members all have a “more the merrier” feeling about it.

Already, Brooke is making $2,700 a month from her new side hustle. While it isn’t as much as her day job, it has brought a much-needed boost, all while allowing her to be more mindful and connect with people wherever they are.

CLASSROOM: Design a Smart Launch Strategy

What It’s About

A successful launch starts with a smart, strategic plan. What’s yours?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1234

Let’s talk about product launches and designing a smart strategy for them!

Disclaimer: I think it’s just as important to think long-term. I’ve seen a lot of people make the mistake of focusing only on the launch. This is especially true with books, where a lot of people buy the book in the first week, but then it sinks like a stone.

At the time I’m recording this, we’re also in the midst of COVID-19. And guess what? People aren’t responding to product launches very well. This is all the more reason why it’s better to think long-term.

That said, this Classroom episode is about launching, specifically how to design that smart launch strategy.

Oncology Nurse Creates Candles During Coronavirus Crisis

What It’s About

A nurse keeps her candle hustle shining brightly amidst times of uncertainty and change.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Fiona launched and then quickly had to adapt her business because of a global crisis, “I launched Milis at the beginning of March and four days after my first retailer went live, they had to close their doors due to Covid-19! So adapting to the changes that has brought has taken up a lot of time over the last few weeks. Like so many others have said, there is never a good time to start a business. The important thing is to just start.”

Fun Fact

Some of the world’s greatest innovations and biggest companies have come about through times of crisis. For example, General Electric, IBM, and Disney all began during times of recession.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1233
Fiona Young ran the oncology ward at a hospital in Waterford, Ireland—but in 2019, an injury kept her off work for six weeks.

The downtime was far from wasted. Fiona loved creative pursuits—a nice break from the intense day job—and started making small candles in vintage teacups for her friends. While learning about candle making, she realized something. Most candles on the market were made from harmful ingredients like paraffin wax. She set about making her own alternative, a candle that’s healthy and natural.

Fiona soon returned to work at the hospital, but found time over the next year to experiment. She really felt like she’d found that spark. Her candles were one hundred percent natural soy wax with cotton wicks and essential oils for fragrance. She created three different scents she called Morning, Zest, and Sparkle. The next step was to try and get stocked into retail stores.

To do that, professional design and packaging was essential. Fiona invested around three thousand dollars into graphic design and manufacturing of her packaging. That produced three hundred candles, one-hundred of each scent. The boxes were made of recyclable brown paper to keep the entire product eco-friendly. A product which Fiona now called Milis [Mil-ish], Irish for sweet.

Soon, she’d made her first deal. A local homewares store put in an order for thirty candles. Fiona was proud as a peach-scented candle at seeing her product out in the wild on a retailer’s shelves. It was the culmination of fourteen months’ hard work. Now was the time to celebrate, and wait for customers to arrive like moths being drawn to a flame.

Unfortunately … all of this happened in March 2020. Right before the COVID-19 pandemic rocked the world. Within a few days, the store had shut its doors along with most retail outlets across the country.

What’s more, Fiona’s messaging around Milis has changed. She has spent much of her outbound messaging talking about other local vendors and stores that could use a helping hand during these difficult times.

Meanwhile, she’s still working full-time at the hospital and running Milis on the side. The plus side is, that when she isn’t at work she’s been isolating at home which has given her a lot of downtime to develop new scents and products which she hopes to launch over each season in the coming year. Who knows if she’d have found the time to do that under usual circumstances.

Since launching right before this pandemic, Fiona has already sold over one hundred and fifty candles earning just over three thousand dollars, meaning that she’s now profitable.

She’s continuing to push on with her PR plans, and is sending samples to magazines around the country to promote Milis. And once shops are open again, she plans to reintroduce her original retail strategy.

Q&A: How to manage multiple side hustles?

What It’s About

A listener with limited time and one hustle is wondering how to add another.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1232

Today’s caller is wondering about how to manage multiple side hustles, specifically, where to invest one’s time.

There are at least three different approaches to this common conundrum. In a short period of time, I’ll give you a rundown of all three.

“I was inspired by Aaron from Episode 906 and have started working on publishing public domain titles as e-books. My question is how to determine how to best use my time.

I’m a full-time school principal and already have an income generating side hustle restoring and refinishing furniture. If I spend time on the books, I’m not able to spend time on my other side hustle. How do people handle multiple side hustle projects?”

Q&A: How can I rent out my spare bedroom on Airbnb?

What It’s About

What does this listener need to know about listing her spare bedroom on Airbnb?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1231

Airbnb: love them or hate them (and there are plenty of people on both sides)—there’s no doubt they have radically shifted the landscape when it comes to booking accommodation worldwide. Just like everyone (or at least a lot of people) can become a rideshare driver, so too can homeowners and sometimes tenants rent out their space directly to consumers.

Confession: I try to write most of my books in an evergreen manner … this is one of the few things I regret about the SIDE HUSTLE book. Overall, 95% of that book should be relevant for many years to come, but I did say a few things about Airbnb rentals that have already changed … so if you’re interested in renting out your spare bedroom for extra cash, it’s good you’re listening to this episode.

“I have a two-bedroom apartment and work as an attorney. It’s just me, so I’m not home much … I like the idea of earning passive income by renting out one of the bedrooms, but when I think about what’s involved in terms of meeting guests, cleaning up and changing the sheets, following up by email and leaving reviews, etc. I start to think it’s not really passive. What do I need to know about doing this, and is there a way to make it easier?”
