Q&A: How to set up payment plans with auto-renewal?

What It’s About

A listener wants to set up a recurring revenue plan.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1428

Today’s caller is hoping to set up a service with a low service fee *and* a renewal payment every three months. Is there an easy way to do this?

Let’s also talk about why you might want to do this…

1. Recurring revenue is so important

2. This approach to generating subscribers is common for a good reason: it works! Or at least, it typically increases the conversion rate compared to not having the low introductory offer.

“Hey Chris, this is Ken from Fresno and I’ve been following your work since the $100 Startup. I’d like to offer a service that has a low signup fee, but then every three months it renews for another payment. My thought is that the low signup fee will encourage people to join without hesitating too much. Then, since they have three whole months before a renewal comes due, they won’t manually cancel the way they would for a more limited trial offer.

I’m wondering about the mechanics of how to offer this. How can I accept an initial payment and have the next charge (and all future charges) go through automatically? Thanks and I look forward to your response. “

Q&A: Should I use a service to promote my romance series?

What It’s About

A listener is in search of advice on how to promote her new book.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1427

We have a lot of authors and aspiring authors out there. One way or another, they’re all looking to get their books into the hands of more people.

I want to know the same thing! Sometimes a book takes off and sometimes it doesn’t. I’ve talked about The Money Tree a few times—that’s my newest book and with COVID it’s been tough to get out the message.

But hey, this isn’t about me! One of our callers is writing a romance series, and looking for promotional ideas. Specifically, she’s wondering if she should pay a service that markets ebooks to a large audience to promote her debut.

“Hi Chris, this is Megan and I’m writing a modern romance series, and want to promote it on Amazon. Where else should I be promoting it? I’ve heard about a service called Bookbub, that advertises ebook sales to millions of people. It’s expensive, and it looks like they don’t approve every request. But they also have a lot of success stories and positive testimonials. What do you think about this service, and what are some other ways to promote a new series? “

Q&A: Should I publish my course in more than one location?

What It’s About

A listener is wondering where to publish her online course.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1425

Today’s listener from the UK is wondering about publishing an online course with a platform like Udemy or Coursera. Does she have to choose one of them, or can she cross-publish to multiple platforms?

I love the thinking here. If you can do the work once and reach people more than once (and get paid more than once!), what’s not to love?

Well—unfortunately, it might not be that simple in this case. I’ll explain why in my answer, and I’ll also suggest a path to pursue that might accomplish the same objective, or at least give our listener some practical action steps.

“Hi Chris, this is Amaria from London and I’ve been following the show for a few years. Thanks for all the great content and advice. You’ve shared a lot of stories from listeners who’ve developed courses for platforms like Udemy and Coursera—and probably a few other platforms that I can’t think of now.

My question is: why not publish your course everywhere? Aren’t there different users on each of these platforms? If you could reach twice as many, or even four times as many people, it seems you’d have that many more students and paying customers. But then I think, well, maybe it’s not that simple. Do the platforms require your work to be exclusive with them? Is there some other disadvantage to cross-publishing? I’d love to know what you think is the best way to proceed. “

Logistics Broker Earns Extra Income From Graffiti

What It’s About

This truck driver gets paid to tag walls with his art.

Words of Wisdom

For others looking to start a graffiti or art side hustle, Marty suggests widening your portfolio. “Keep thinking outside the box. I started drawing popular cartoon characters – even ones I didn’t know – and posted them online. I usually get inboxes from that. I drew a Frozen character and got a client from there.”

Fun Fact

The first forms of graffiti date back to Roman architecture. Although there was no spray paint at the time, artists would carve messages onto walls. In fact, the word graffiti was created from the Greek word “graphein” which means, “to write.” [Source]

Notes from Chris

Episode 1424
In 2019, Marty Nagel had been working in his career as a third party logistics broker for about a decade. Although he’s now based in Louisville, Kentucky, he was raised in Cincinnati, Ohio—a city known for its rich graffiti culture. Ever since high school, when he went to a few graffiti events in town, he had a fascination with the art.

Around the end of 2019, Marty was chatting with a friend when she began to tell him about a special present she intended to buy for her son. She told him that for his birthday, she was going to pay someone to create a small piece of graffiti art on his wall.

Ever the graffiti lover, Marty inquired further, and found out that she was intending on paying $800 for just a bedroom-sized wall.

Taken aback by the price, Marty offered to do it himself and charge a more palette-able rate, at $350. He also offered to throw in something extra: painting her son’s name in his room in the Wildstyle font. Marty’s friend agreed. Although he wasn’t planning it at the time, she became the first of many future clients.

Besides buying the cans of spray paint for each project, Marty did not have to pay anything else to get his new business up and running. He decided to call it Lowkey Originals.

His first course of action was to build a large portfolio of work to show off his variety of skills and abilities. To market his work, he made an Instagram account and designed a few t-shirts.

He’s been able to keep this steady stream of clients by utilizing social media … and not paying for it. Rather than pay for advertising, all Marty has had to do is run an Instagram and Facebook account. He posts a photo on Facebook every week and asks his friends to share the post.

He currently has enough clients to be booked two months out. Through this experience, Marty has been able to pay his rent, make a career switch in the middle of a pandemic without stressing out, and delve into his long-time passion for art.

As of now, Marty plans to keep Lowkey Originals just that—lowkey and on the side, complimenting his new day job as a driver.

Q&A: How can an Italian living overseas get more voiceover work?

What It’s About

An Italian expat wants to market herself as a multilingual voiceover artist.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1423

In today’s story: An Italian living in England is trying to break into the multilingual voiceover market.

In a situation like this, you have a couple of options: to compete traditionally or look for an alternative solution.

Another example is a story we did last month (Ep. 1394) about a woman who found a niche in coaching by focusing entirely on the decision making process.

Let’s see if we can help our caller with a similar process.

Hi, Chris. This is Laura from London in England. I’ve been listening to your podcast since the very start and it’s been incredibly helpful to hear about other people’s experiences with their businesses. My side hustle is working as a voiceover artist. And my question is, how can I expand my business? I’m a native Italian speaker, but I’m based in England and a lot of the best paid voiceover projects in Italian are recorded by voiceover artists based in Italy. So the amount of projects I can work on is limited. I’ve also been doing some projects in English with a foreign accent. But the market is quite small for this. So I was thinking of expanding into other areas like radio presenting. Is this the right thing to do?

Financial Planner Sells Sartorial Storage Solutions

What It’s About

A financial planner and woodworking hobbyist whittles a new source of income for his growing family.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Waiting to make a leap into selling a product? Justin has some great advice; “If you have an idea, get it out into the market and test it. My products are completely different than when I started, but I got them out there and improved them in small increments over time.”

Fun Fact

Product photography makes a big difference when it comes to e-commerce. The influencers that helped Justin generate the most sales on his products were not those who had the most Instagram followers, but those who could take the best pictures.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1422
Financial planner Justin Trewitt loves woodworking. He picked up the hobby when he and his wife bought their first house and needed to furnish it. Uninterested in paying top dollar for furniture, he decided to build what he needed in his spare time. By the time he was done, he not only had the furniture but also woodworking skills that he could use for the rest of his life.

When Justin’s wife quit her teaching job to be a stay at home mom, he knew they needed a new source of family income. The financial planner in him knew this was the sort of advice he would give his clients: to replace one source of income with another. Although he wasn’t sure he could replace his wife’s salary completely, he decided to start by selling the wooden accessories he had been making in his spare time. It was also an excellent way to blend his woodworking hobby with his passion for menswear—something he wouldn’t have done otherwise.

Etsy was the obvious choice for Justin to experiment with selling his handcrafted work. He started by listing just a couple of products, including a wooden rack for pocket squares which he had made for himself. He also thought a wooden tie rack would do well, so he used scrap wood and tie pegs to piece one together. And just like that, Dapper Woodworks was born.

Around the same time, an acquaintance had introduced him to the owner of an ecommerce store that overlapped nicely with what he was making. This store sold luxury suit hangers as well as other high-end men’s accessories. Custom made items such as a wooden tie rack were something the store owner had been looking to add to his range of products for a long time. Up till now, Justin had simply been making items that fit the needs of his few customers who found him online. This was the first time he would be coming up with standardized designs for a broader market.

Today, he spends most of his spare time trying to build brand awareness efforts through online and in-person networking. Coupled with some experiments in Google Adwords, Justin has seen his business grow. In 2019, he generated over $32,000 in revenue, with $7,000 in profit. This figure is set to increase in 2020, even as the economic outlook has declined, with him projecting $50,000 in revenue and $20,000 in profit. All of this came from investing under $100 in scrap wood and metal pegs to make his first product.

His products are completely different from when he started, and he only got there with small improvements over time. As he says, if you have an idea, you’ll never be able to improve it until you test it in the real world.

Q&A: Is it really better to offer more ways of accepting payment?

What It’s About

A listener wants to know if there are any downsides to accepting more types of payment.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1421

When you set up an ecommerce site, you have to make a number of decisions. It’s easier than it ever has been—with companies such as Squarespace and Shopify providing turnkey solutions—but you still need to set up your inventory, adjust various settings, and decide how you will accept payment. That brings us to today’s question!

This listener is wondering about adding new options for accepting payment, including checking debits and crytopocurrency. Is more always better?

“Hi Chris, this is Emily from Seattle and I’ve been listening to the show since episode 1. Still enjoying the puns. My sister and I are about to launch our online store soon, and we’re going to use a combination of Stripe and PayPal. With Stripe, you can choose which credit cards you want to accept. In addition, I see that some websites have lots of other ways to process payments, including direct checking account withdrawals, cryptocurrency, and more. Part of me thinks this is overkill, but another part wonders: might it be better to have more options to pay? I don’t want to turn anyone away. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on this. “

Q&A: How can I sell “printables” without paid ads?

What It’s About

A listener wants to create and sell printable products. What should they know?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1420

Let’s talk about selling printables! What do you need to know?

First of all, what are they?

Printables are pieces of artwork, drawings, or other digital files that you can download online and print yourself—so there’s no need to ship anything as a seller, and buyers can access the work immediately. This presents a number of pros and cons:

  • Very easy to get started (pro)
  • Very high profit margin (pro)
  • Anyone can do it (so a lot of people do) (pro & con)
  • You can’t charge much (con)

Today’s listener wants to sell printables (digital artwork for download) and needs a quick marketing plan to profit before Thanksgiving weekend.

“Hi, Chris, this is Yvonne from the D.C. metro area. I love listening to your podcasts and being a part of the Side hustle School community. My side hustle is creating printables on Etsy, and right now I’m creating holiday-themed printables. So my question is, I’m not sure what’s the best way to market my Etsy shop besides Etsy ads which I don’t want to pay for upfront. I’m already pinning to Pinterest and posting on Instagram, but I’m not sure what else I can be doing. I want to know what’s the best way to market this shop. And I know that creating a plan before Thanksgiving weekend is key.”

We’ve heard from a lot of people worldwide who have been expanding a coffee empire, raising a million dollars on Kickstarter for a new board game, going full-time with illustrations of houses, selling virtual paintbrushes for iPad artists—and of course, many of these adventures taking place under the overarching limitations of a global pandemic.

Today, in our latest feature, we’ll hear from a personal trainer who sells pumped-up pancakes full of protein. You could say she puts the pro in protein! They’re also profitable pancakes. She’s proud of them, and passionate about them, and also a very personable individual.
