I believe we can learn as much from failure as we can from success, if not more. It’s with this principle in mind that we’re starting Failure Friday, a collection of short stories all about mistakes, missteps, disasters, and of course, failure.

Just like our Throwback Thursday segment, you’ll hear directly from side hustlers who have struggled to get something off the ground. They’ll tell you a short story of something that went very wrong.

The stories will vary, but often it starts with an idea, what they thought would happen and what really happened—and of course, what they learned.

I applaud their courage! I’ll share some of my failure stories along the way as well.

Welcome to Throwback Thursday / “Where are they now?” where we take an in-depth look at someone who’s story has evolved considerably since we first featured them.

Last week, we heard from a tea brand owner who climbed a steep path through COVID challenges. Before that, we had premium cocktail pins, handbags for active women, and designer dog clothing.

Today, in our latest feature, we’ll hear from a maker in Chicago, Illinois who sells faith-based jewelry, especially rosary beads. We first had her on the show a couple of years ago, and she’s really expanded since then with lots of new adventures and a few challenges.

Today’s listener is feeling stuck. They’ve tried everything—or at least, a lot of things—and still aren’t sure how to go from idea to income. What’s the best way to get unstuck?

I’m going to be as actionable as I can with my answer, so that if you too are feeling discouraged in any way, you’ll go away with at least one thing (probably two or three) that you can take real action on and get closer to an actionable idea. That’s what it’s all about!

“I feel like your worst student. I’ve listened to 600 episodes and read three of your books, but I still don’t know what I’d do to get paid without just trading time for money, which is what I do for my day job. The whole point is to earn passive income, but I don’t have much money to invest and just end up feeling tired at the end of the day. Do you think I’m a lost cause? I feel like I need a way to reframe this whole situation, but I’m not sure what it would be.”

When it comes to starting a side hustle, Hedy has a unique perspective as a young entrepreneur, “Just go for it. Don’t think about how ready you are, it’s more about learning through the process. As a teen who was really brand new to entrepreneurship and business, I know what it’s like to have imposter syndrome thinking ‘who am I to be doing this?’. But if you really stick to it, and show the value you can bring, people will hire you.”

When Hedy Zhou {head-y Joe} was just 15 years old, she had already been running her first side hustle as a piano instructor for about a year.

For her second, she saw an ad for Wix that said she could make a website for free. At the time, Hedy figured that if she made the website, people would simply come to her. Surprise! It didn’t happen. She only got about five visitors, and none of them wanted to give her any money.

After a break, she created a second blog. This time, she was determined to make all the right moves. She took a much more business approach, and decided to interview entrepreneurs from different industries. She also had a few guest posts on the blog.

A year later, she came across a classmate who had her own website and it inspired her to try once more. Third time’s the charm, right? She decided it would be an authentic, online space with a diary-like feel called Happily, Hedy.

This blog was indeed more popular than the first two. Moreover, as she connected with other bloggers, Hedy noticed that she kept getting comments about her website design. It got her thinking. Could she offer design as a service?

If nothing else, she would try. She soon added a “Services” tab to her blog, where she offered to do basic graphic design projects for a low price. From there, she created a portfolio with all the designs she’d made in the past—at least all the ones she was proud of. Not only that, but she started to post in various Facebook groups advertising her website. After a couple of weeks, Hedy got her first inquiry.

After that, Hedy began to reach out to brands for sponsored posts and collaborations. It didn’t take long to realize that she needed to refocus her blog. While she loved writing about whatever she was interested in at the moment, she knew that writing more specifically about design had more potential for her business.

Once she began to focus, interest picked up. Hedy joined a program that was sponsored by her city, and through that she made connections. Eventually, one of them found out about her studio and hired her to do a design initiative.

Hedy is now a student in college working towards her undergraduate degree. She makes at least $1,000/month working her own hours. While the money is nice, it’s also given her valuable skills. She has knowledge in SEO, marketing, sales and of course, has improved her design ability. Once she graduates, she plans to make it her full-time career or maybe even start a new company.

When something goes wrong and you have a negative experience with a big company, what do you do—do you remain silent, or do you speak up? If you do speak up, what’s your approach?

One key of successful complaining (i.e. getting a positive response) is to focus on the issue without getting overly emotional and to identify a remedy.

That’s something I’ve learned over the years, especially with travel situations. But today’s caller might be a better complainer than me! This listener is really good at speaking up and getting what he deserves whenever something goes wrong. This is Side Hustle School, so is there a way he can turn this skill into a service?

“United Airlines canceled a flight I was on, then tried to rebook me on an itinerary that would have required a 4am trip to the airport and an extra connection. I escalated the complaint, and after talking to a manager, I got it down to one connection at a reasonable time and a voucher for $200. If I hadn’t spoken up, I would have been out of luck! It wasn’t that hard, but lots of people don’t know what to say or how to be what I call “politely assertive.” I’d like to brand myself as “The Complaint Coach” and help people get what they deserve from large companies, especially when something goes wrong. Do you have any tips or advice?”

Matt shares some great advice for those looking for a hustle idea, “If you can’t think of anything you’re passionate about, consider being a bit more lax on your definition of “passion”. Do you like spending your nights lying in bed watching anime? Well, I bet there’s something there. With any niche community, there are a world of opportunities to build something cool – whether it’s a website, a Youtube channel or even just a spreadsheet of data.”

One day, Matt’s former boss and mentor spoke to him about a site that was doing such a good job, that it outranked his own for certain keywords Low and behold, he’d taught Matt so well that it was actually his site outranking them.

Matt Oney has worn every digital marketing hat there is over the last six years in his day job as an online marketer for a startup in San Francisco.

After working hard for his employer, he started to question why he wasn’t putting that sort of effort into something of his own. He’d heard about affiliate marketing and thought it could be something that played to his strengths. On top of that, Matt had an old boss with a successful affiliate website, so he called on him to ask for advice.

The old boss ran through how to pick a good niche and said to make sure it was something he actually cared about. It didn’t take long for Matt to settle on health and wellness, with a particular focus on mental health products.

In February 2020 he registered the domain name ZenmasterWellness.com. It was a little different, but Matt felt it was exactly the type of branding and image he wanted to set for his new website.

As the COVID-19 pandemic hit, his employer cut his hours and salary by twenty percent. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Matt figured that with a little more time on his hands, and a little less money, he now had both the space and the necessary incentive to work on his site more seriously.

He continued learning, identifying keywords and writing articles on an occasional basis. By July, this method had his site generating around twenty five visits per day.

Within those articles, he began placing affiliate links to the products website. These tracked users’ clicks and he’d receive a commission for every sale he generated.

The strategy worked, and over the next year he added content that would often succeed—not always as successfully as his smart gyms article—but that generated revenue nonetheless. How much? Well, just over a year into Zenmaster Wellness the site generates an average of ten thousand per month in commissions.

With that sort of money, you’d be forgiven for thinking Matt has quit his full time job, but that hasn’t happened yet. Instead, he looks at Zenmaster Wellness as a way to increase his wealth building efforts. It’s definitely a healthy complement to meditation.

Q&A: “Personal Shark Tank” looks for investors, but with a twist

I’m calling this Q&A episode “Personal Shark Tank,” a phrase I’ve borrowed from today’s caller. He’s looking for investors, but not in the way you might expect.

Last week I mentioned income-share agreements (ISAs), where some colleges are letting students pay tuition only after they graduate and get a well-paying job. This is great in so many ways, most notably that it shifts the burden for performance to the institution.

Our caller is looking for something similar, but more directly … I’ll let him explain more. This is really interesting!

“I know you don’t talk about getting investors, but I’d like to do it with a bit of a twist. In the world of cryptocurrency and NFTs, why can’t a person do their own IPO and sell stock in themselves? My idea is to make a post on Medium about my idea, and offer a percentage of profits in exchange for up to $50,000 from “DIY investors.” I haven’t figured out what the percentage should be, and if it’s all-or-nothing or if I allow lots of people to pay small amounts of money. But in short, think of it like Personal Shark Tank. Is there any problem with this? Also—do you want to invest? Looking forward to hearing from you.”

Have you heard the story about the first purchase ever made with Bitcoin? It was in 2010, when Laszlo Hanyecz paid 10,000 Bitcoins for two large pizzas. At today’s exchange rate, that’s $540 million dollars.

It would be easy to hear that story and think, wow, I bet he regrets that.

But this guy is like, nope, I was glad to do it, it wasn’t worth that much then, and of course I had no idea what would happen later.

My takeaway is: what a great attitude!

Today’s listener question is pretty simple: can you get paid in Bitcoin for your product or service? The key point, however, is that some services like PayPal now allow you to accept payments in Bitcoin … but not really. Our listener Adam will say more about that, and I’ll give him a tip that could be helpful for anyone who’d like to accept payments in the world’s largest cryptocurrency.

“Hey Chris, this is Adam from Dayton and I’ve been following the show since last year. Thanks for the helpful content. I’m working on an e-commerce site and I’d like to add Bitcoin to our list of payment options. Who knows if anyone will use it, but if they do, I’ll just hold on to those funds separately and see what happens as the price continues to go up. I know that PayPal allows Bitcoin payments now, which is cool, but it looks like they automatically convert payments into dollars. That’s not what I want—I want Bitcoin payments to remain Bitcoin, with no cash conversion. You’d think this would be simple, but I’ve looked around a bit and can’t find a good solution. Do you know of one? Thanks.”
