Q&A: How do I actually sell an NFT??

What It’s About

Today’s listener shares her personal experience with selling NFTs.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1680

Here is a tip for learning about a new technology – do it in small chunks. If you hear this and don’t understand it, just keep it in the back of your mind … then the next time you hear about the topic, another part of it will make sense.

This is how I learned about blockchain technology and cryptocurrency, among other things.

Keep this in mind as you hear today’s episode, because it’s about NFTs!

WFT is an NFT? It’s a non-fungible token, also known as digital art that’s for sale to the highest bidder. You might have heard of how wild these markets are, but how can an artist actually participate and benefit from them?

Rather than give you a listener question, I’m going to give you a listener answer. This comes from Doris Wai, featured on Ep. 795. Doris is an artist in Toronto who has actually sold NFTs!

Let’s hear from her, and I’ll explain a couple more things at the end.

Failure Friday: “I realized really quickly that no one was buying…”

What It’s About

An assumption about customer preferences proves incorrect.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1679

I believe we can learn as much from failure as we can from success, if not more. It’s with this principle in mind that we’re starting Failure Friday, a collection of short stories all about mistakes, missteps, disasters, and of course, failure.

Just like our Throwback Thursday segment, you’ll hear directly from side hustlers who have struggled to get something off the ground. They’ll tell you a short story of something that went very wrong.

The stories will vary, but often it starts with an idea, what they thought would happen and what really happened—and of course, what they learned.

I applaud their courage! I’ll share some of my failure stories along the way as well.

Today’s short story features Amy McCord Jones from Oklahoma City. We told the successful story of her project on Episode 863: Wedding Planner Earns Passive Income with DIY Flowers.

But like so many of us, she had some struggles along the way. Let’s hear from her about one of those struggles including one of those early assumptions that proves faulty… I’ll be back at the end to wrap us up.

TBT: Dating App for Dog Lovers Fetches New Users

What It’s About

An pawesome update from the co-founder of a dating app that helps match dog lovers (and now cats).

Notes from Chris

Episode 1678

Welcome to Throwback Thursday / “Where are they now?” where we take an in-depth look at someone who’s story has evolved considerably since we first featured them.

Last week, we heard from the co-founder of a temporary tattoo brand that helps people cover up surgical scars.

Today, in our latest feature, we’ll hear from Leigh Isaacson, the co-founder (together with her sister!) of Dig Dates: the dating app for dog lovers. We first featured her on Episode 983: Sisters Find Puppy Love After Launching Dating App. If you live a “dog-forward lifestyle” and have struggled finding a partner, maybe you need the Dig app.

What’s happened since?

Listen to today’s episode to hear Leigh’s updates…

Q&A: Did you hear about the $20 million podcast deal?

What It’s About

Today’s caller wants his share of a big podcasting deal.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1677

A few recent listener questions have been on the topic of making money from podcasts. How do you find sponsors? How can you get more distribution or audience? What are other ways of getting paid through podcasts?

Today we have a related question: do some podcasts make more money than others—and not just some shows, but specific genres or categories? Guess what …the answer is yes! Some genres or categories do tend to be both bigger in terms of audience and in terms of profitability. Let’s peek under the hood…

Also, funny story about the $20 million podcast. I’ll tell you more after the break and the question.

“Hi Chris, this is Craig from Omaha and I’ve been listening to the show for a couple of years. Thanks for stories and helpful content. I heard that Spotify acquired a podcast for twenty million dollars. What a crazy valuation! I assume most podcasts aren’t worth very much money at all, but now I’m wondering: are there certain types of shows that are more profitable than others? Does a celebrity need to host a podcast for it to have a high valuation? Basically, if someone was going to start a podcast and could choose any genre, type, or style, and they wanted to make as much money as possible—what should they do? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts. Thanks!”

Former Lego Instructor Makes Real Play Money

What It’s About

Building off his experience with corporate workshops, this facilitator gets paid to teach adults the value of play.

Words of Wisdom

Jeff shares this advice: “The more we are willing to experiment, the more we are willing to show up with curiosity, and simply play, the more likely we will figure it out than simply following the advice of others.”

Fun Fact

The movie Big (starring Tom Hanks!) was released in 1988 to critical and commercial acclaim. This story of a young boy who ends up inside the body of a grown man reminded a generation to always stay true to childhood.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1676
Sixteen years ago, Jeff Harry landed what sounds like a dream job, working for a toy company. He’d grown up watching the movie Big and idolized the main character (played by Tom Hanks) who is a literal grown up kid who works as a toy tester.

As the business grew they began offering corporate events. Jeff ran Lego workshops for some of the world’s biggest tech companies, including Facebook, Google, Adobe and PayPal. He noticed that even in these innovative companies, they didn’t allow the time nor space for their staff to take risks and play.

So, for the first time in fifteen years, Jeff started to think about a side hustle. He knew these workplaces could benefit from advocating things he’d been doing for years; having fun at work through play and positive psychology. He just needed a hook and a platform to assess interest.

For that, he came up with a fun workshop with a fellow WDSer, Gary Ware, called “How To Deal With A-Holes At Work Through Play” and launched it at the World Domination Summit.

After receiving an enthusiastic response, Jeff pitched the workshop to some major tech conferences, expecting nothing to come from it. He was wrong: three major conferences including South By SouthWest accepted the workshop into their program. The validation gave him confidence he was on the right track.

Over the course of the next year, Jeff was featured on one hundred and fifty podcasts where he shared his story. This exposed him to business owners and representatives at companies that wanted to work with him.

In addition to this podcast exposure, Jeff started posting short TikTok videos about common HR pain points. Afterwards, he’d repost them to other social media platforms. He also writes posts to Medium and LinkedIn on a regular basis and whenever someone reacts positively he’ll reach out to them to make a new connection.

This relationship building strategy has worked well. It’s enabled Jeff to run workshops throughout the pandemic and even boost his income, earning upwards of five thousand dollars per month so far.

As great as that is, Jeff truly believes in the power of play to improve relationships and well-being. He wants to keep teaching everything he knows and build a worldwide community around play.

Q&A: How can I market a personalized meditation app?

What It’s About

Today’s listener seeks advice on how to market their app in a crowded marketplace.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1675

Welcome to a new week! I’m in Santa Barbara, filming two new courses that I’m excited to share with you.

In the meantime, today’s caller has a question: millions of people use meditation apps—might there be room for a more personalized solution? That’s what today’s listener is wondering.

“Hi there Chris, this is Chelsea from Santa Barbara and I’ve been listening to the shows for a couple of years now. Millions of people use commercial apps like Headspace and Calm to explore meditation—and that’s a great start! But those app are created for the masses, and my idea is something different: personalized meditation plans for companies, groups, and organizations. I figure that each group has unique challenges, and a recorded meditation practice that addresses them more specifically would be a cool investment in human resources for forward-thinking companies. How can I sell this idea?”

Think Inside the Subscription Box

What It’s About

A successful subscription box service turns into a growing and thriving community.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Julie offers some important advice: “You don’t have to be everything to everyone. In fact, that’s a recipe for disaster. Instead, you should hone in very specifically to your Ideal Customer Avatar. Name them and write an entire notebook page about them. Then when you are marketing, speak directly to them.”

Fun Fact

Julie originally thought the subscription box would be a lead magnet and attract customers to her web agency. But it’s grown to become her full-time hustle. She shut down the web agency and jokes that Sparkle Hustle Grow is the worst lead magnet ever.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1674
In 2016, Julie Ball was running a web agency. Since she could work from anywhere, she and her husband decided to move to Asheville, North Carolina the summer before their daughter started kindergarten. She loved their new home, but she found herself spending lots of time behind a screen and missing personal interaction.

On a whim, she decided to create Sparkle Hustle Grow, a subscription box that would serve the same audience she served with her agency, female entrepreneurs. She enjoyed getting subscription boxes herself, so she thought if she created one that had business tools and training that would help customers thrive, then it might be a good lead generation tool for her agency.

In choosing what to put in the box, Julie looked back at her own expense receipts to see where she was spending money. She read a lot of books, usually in the self-help and personal development categories. She also bought a lot of office supplies. In fact, she’s a self-described office supplies junkie, buying items that bring joy rather than basic blue or black pens. The contents of the boxes changed as she got feedback, but that was her initial vision.

Then Julie shared it with everyone she knew, posted in Facebook groups that were relevant to her audience, and asked others to share. During the pre-launch, she sent out emails each week to that list she’d been nurturing, showing off her progress and asking them questions. This way, she’d have an email list of interested buyers when she actually launched. She promised an exclusive item for “founding members” and created a sense of urgency with a deadline and a limited supply of 100 boxes.

When she finally opened the cart and got her first sale notification on her phone, Julie jumped up and did a little dance. As more sales came in, she colored in each state of her customers on a poster board print of the United States. She didn’t hit her goal of 100, but made 42 sales and ended up shipping 56 boxes that first month.

From there, she kept growing … a lot. In the space of two years, Sparkle Hustle Grow went from a dream to a much bigger business with annual revenue of $750,000 and a small team of contractors. How did it grow from 42 boxes to more than a thousand going out each month? Julie has used Facebook ads, a referral program, and sales funnels (basically, a discount in exchange for an email address, then an email sequence) to grow her subscriber base. She’s also built relationships with female entrepreneurs through Facebook groups and in-person events.

In fact, she’s become so good at the subscription box business that she launched an online course called Subscription Box Bootcamp as a side hustle to what is now her main hustle.

Subscription boxes have a lot of moving parts and Julie knows the information can be really scattered, so she considers this course (and community) to be like the Disney Fast Pass to success with launching. She also created a podcast called Subscription Box Basics.

You might say Sparkle Hustle Grow didn’t work very well towards Julie’s intended goal of being lead magnet, but it became something much better.

Q&A: How to make a board game from start to finish?

What It’s About

Today’s caller wants to create a board game from scratch.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1673

Real talk: I sometimes worry that I’m steering everyone toward doing the easy thing or refraining from taking on a big challenge. If I ever do that, it’s because I want you to know that creating a new source of income is accessible and feasible. Not everything has to cost a lot of money or take months of your life to get going.

That said, if you have a vision or big idea, you need to pay attention to that. It’s not always about doing what’s quick or easy or the most efficient. In life, you’re going to be happier if you follow-up on your big ideas, whatever they are.

These values are not in conflict!

With that in mind, today’s listener wants to make a board game. It’s a lot of work to do this right—there are many steps, and he’s going to have to learn a lot along the way. But that just means it’s a challenge! Let’s see if we can help him out.

“Hi Chris, this is Will and I have an idea that feels both exciting and scary. I want to make a board game. The more I think about it, the more I realize there are a lot of elements involved, from game design to actual construction to stocking inventory and working with retailers … and all of this is before actually marketing the game. It’s a lot … but like I said, it feels exciting, and I really want to try. Any tips or advice? If it helps, I have some money to spend and I’m not in a rush.”

Failure Friday: Weighted Blankets Get Weighed Down in Customs

What It’s About

A challenging situation unfolds when weighted blankets get stuck in customs.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1672

I believe we can learn as much from failure as we can from success, if not more. It’s with this principle in mind that we’re starting Failure Friday, a collection of short stories all about mistakes, missteps, disasters, and of course, failure.

The stories will vary, but often it starts with an idea, what they thought would happen and what really happened—and of course, what they learned.

I applaud their courage! I’ll share some of my failure stories along the way as well.

Today’s short story features Aaron Spivak from Toronto, Canada. We told the successful journey of his weighted blanket business on Episode #885. But disaster struck—and when I say disaster, in this case I mean total disaster.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1671

Welcome to Throwback Thursday / “Where are they now?” where we take an in-depth look at someone who’s story has evolved considerably since we first featured them.

Last week, we heard from an adjunct professor who helps data scientists prepare for interviews at tech companies. Before that, a romance novel editor who goes all-in on her freelance work.

Today, in our latest feature, we’ll hear from Denise O’Connell. She’s the co-founder of TuckTat’s Temporary Tattoos, a temporary tattoo brand that helps people cover up surgical scars.

Designed to look like realistic tattoos, TuckTats last 5-7 days even after workouts, sun exposure, and swimming. We featured her story back on episode #965.

What’s happened since?

Listen to today’s episode to hear Denise’s updates…
