No Code, No Problem: Easy-to-Build Apps for Everyone

What It’s About

Look ma, no coding needed? A marketing executive builds apps for his clients.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Take note, Sardar maybe onto something, “Being able to build apps without knowing how to code is a dream come true. If this trend continues in the same way, perhaps it will be the right time to shift it from a side hustle to a new offering.”

Fun Fact

When he’s not no-coding apps, Sardar loves to run. He can complete a marathon in 2 hours and 55 minutes!

Notes from Chris

Episode 1709
Sardar Azimov found his side hustle while waiting in the long queue for a food truck. It was a hot summer’s day in Miami, and he wished there was a way he could order his food in advance and pick it up when it was ready. Or, at least, be able to go stand in the shade while it was being prepared.

As the CEO of a Marketing Agency called Skief Labs, Sardar was familiar with the power of native apps for a business. Customers love the experience of using their smartphone to order food, shop for clothes, access content, or just share updates with friends. (I mean, chances are you’ve already used one or two apps like that today, right?) But, Sardar had a problem: he wasn’t a coder, and had no desire to become one.

One of the byproducts of the COVID-19 pandemic for Sardar was that he had a little more time on his hands than usual. Client projects at his agency had slowed way down, which allowed him to devote time to learning new skills. So, he began exploring different ways to create apps that didn’t require an in-depth knowledge of coding languages. That’s when he stumbled upon the perfect solution.

Specifically, Sardar came across two tools called Glide and Adalo. They allow creators to build “No Code Apps” using their platforms. Basically, that means you can choose all of the features, designs, and interactive elements of your app without ever having to put in a line of code. It’s a little like using a drag-and-drop website builder like Wix or Squarespace, but for apps, and it means that anyone can get started creating professional-looking apps.

Sardar realized that if people were willing to invest in freelance developers to build apps from scratch, there may also be a market for his no-code approach. After all, it allows him to create apps more quickly for a much lower cost. So he created a listing on the marketplace Fiverr to offer his services.

Sardar set the prices for his work based on two factors: the complexity of the app, and the time it would take him to complete. He found that simple apps with just a few screens could be turned around in a couple of days. He charged a maximum of $1,200 for them. Larger apps could extend to a couple of weeks, with feedback and revisions, and prices for those start from $2,500. These prices were still affordable in the world of app development, but were at a rate where Sardar felt comfortable and well-compensated for the work he was doing.

Sardar’s listing quickly became a hit. There was a large market of people who had tried to create No Code apps for their businesses, but had hit snags along the way, and needed someone like him to help them complete their project.

There was also a market for businesses who wanted a bootstrapped minimum-viable product for their app idea, and Sardar could offer them a quick and easy way to test a product with their audience. So, as time went on, Sardar used his marketing skills to word his Fiverr listing to speak directly to these audiences.

As a result, Sardar now makes a good extra income from his no-code side hustle, without spending any money on startup costs or marketing. He’s happy with the number of leads coming in being relatively small, especially as his day job picks up as we come out of the pandemic.

Next, he wants to look at how he can use his No Code skills to add another element to his agency.

Q&A: What are the ethics of paid referrals to therapists?

What It’s About

Today’s listener needs help navigating a tricky question.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1708

A listener with a YouTube channel about quitting smoking wants to earn commissions by referring viewers to therapists. What are the ethical and practical concerns of this idea?

“I’m starting a YouTube series to help people stop smoking by creating more powerful habits. It’s not just about smoking—that’s just my entry point, since I used to be a smoker and many people struggle to quit. Eventually I hope to turn this into a whole business with an online course and membership program. Until then, however, I’d like to earn commission from referring viewers to programs I believe in and to qualified professionals. It’s this second part I’m wondering about: what are the ethics of referring people to therapists or counselors? I want to make sure I’m doing it the right way … but I also don’t want to give up on my idea, since I think it’s powerful.”

Failure Friday: “Hundreds of people were shut out of my webinar…”

What It’s About

A photographer re-poses her business and tries something new.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1707

I believe we can learn as much from failure as we can from success, if not more. It’s with this principle in mind that we’re starting Failure Friday, a collection of short stories all about mistakes, missteps, disasters, and of course, failure.

Just like our Throwback Thursday segment, you’ll hear directly from side hustlers who have struggled to get something off the ground. They’ll tell you a short story of something that went very wrong.

The stories will vary, but often it starts with an idea, what they thought would happen and what really happened—and of course, what they learned.

I applaud their courage! I’ll share some of my failure stories along the way as well.

Today’s short story features Tanya Smith from Hamilton, Ontario in Canada. We told the successful story of her boudoir photography studio on Episode #1035. She was formerly a corporate banker who underwent a big reinvention and then also built a business helping other boudoir photographers—you’ll hear about that in her story.

TBT: Extra-Strong Coffee Supports Firefighters Nationwide

What It’s About

A coffee company fuels first responders across the nation.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1706

Welcome to Throwback Thursday / “Where are they now?” where we take an in-depth look at someone who’s story has evolved considerably since we first featured them.

Last week, we heard from a former H.R. manager who now sells matchsticks full-time. I actually ordered some matches from her and they just arrived the other day, right in time to prepare this episode. StrikeaMatch2.com.

Today, in our latest feature, we’ll hear from Eli Held, the co-founder of Muertos Coffee from Sacramento, California. We first told the Muertos story back in Episode #986. It’s all about better coffee that supports first responders, especially firefighters across the country. The name Muertos means “death” in Spanish, so this is coffee strong enough to raise the dead.

What’s happened since?

Listen to today’s episode to hear Eli’s updates…

Q&A: How does a side hustle fit into a savings plan?

What It’s About

Today’s caller is making money with their hustle – great! Now what?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1705

Welcome to a new month!

How does a side hustle fit into your overall savings plan? That’s what our listener wants to know, in response to some recent comments on different asset classes.

You know, when I talk about the importance of having more than one source of income, I often mention it in the context of security. What if something changes in your life? What if you lose your job? What if you want to quit your job?

The other component to having more money is savings and investments. I don’t want to get sidetracked from our mission, but another way to have more security is through additional forms of savings.

How does a side hustle fit into your overall savings plan? That’s what our listener wants to know, in response to some recent comments on different asset classes.

“In the bonus episode you did with a bank executive, he mentioned something about the importance of saving in different asset classes. Can you explain that more? Also, does it apply to earning in addition to saving? All the attention on meme stocks and high real estate prices has got me thinking I should be doing more to diversify my assets, but there’s so much conflicting advice out there that I don’t know where to start.”

The Six-Figure Belly Dancing Course

What It’s About

Hips don’t lie with this health-focused belly dancing course.

Words of Wisdom

When it comes to finding an audience for your product, Jennifer has some advice. “Find a unique angle to your niche that no one has taken. For example, I’m quite sure that my product wouldn’t have been successful if it was just a “learn belly dance” product. When I connected the belly dance to an extremely common and painful health condition is when I created the winning formula. See how you can connect your niche/offer to another problem that will make it totally unique.”

Fun Fact

Belly dancing was originally performed by women for women, although men also belly dance. The movements are sometimes thought to mimic the way that women give birth, and many belly dancers find increased mental and physical strengthen the more they practice. [source]

Notes from Chris

Episode 1704
Jennifer Sobel was introduced to belly dancing when she was just ten years old. Her dad took her to a restaurant where a belly dancer performed, and Jennifer was in awe.

Fast forward, and she’s now been doing it for nearly fifteen years. She says it makes her feel deeply connected with her body.

But belly-dance is a hobby, not a business … right?

Despite the odds, Jennifer wanted to see what could be done. In February of 2019 she decided to create a product—partly as an experiment, but also in response to a real need she’d discovered.

A fellow belly dancer had confided to her that the practice had helped to solve a personal problem: bladder leakage. By strengthening your core muscles, it’s much less of an issue for women.

Why is this so significant? Because it points to a problem in need of a solution.

Doing more research, she discovered it was absolutely true: belly dancing prevents leakage. Jennifer even found a study done in the Journal of Physical Therapy Science that examined the effectiveness of belly dancing on strengthening the pelvic floor.

Jennifer suddenly realized that this was her ticket to income. Sure, a lot of people were interested in belly dancing simply because they liked it, but she bet that a whole lot more people would be interested if they knew it could help with an intimate problem.

It took her about five hours to record the course, and between the filming and editing, it was ready in two weeks. She excitedly released it in June of 2019 on her new website TheBellyDanceSolution.com … but unfortunately nothing happened.

She had taken two steps forward, and one step back. But this was just the beginning. Jennifer redesigned her sales page, adjusted the price, and relaunched in August. She was, after all, a digital marketer.

She’s now expecting to bring in $160,000 this year from The Belly Dance Solution and a second course, Feminine Fire. She credits her success to committing to make those small adjustments over time, as well as simply not giving up.

To this day, the majority of her clients come from Facebook and Google ads, where she now spends thousands of profitable dollars a month.

She loves that she gets to help women live happier and healthier lives and she has big plans for the future. She’s working on a blog and YouTube channel. Not only that, but Jennifer hopes to release a line of clothing for belly dancers, shaking up the industry.

Q&A: How many social platforms should I post to?

What It’s About

Today’s listener seeks the best return on investment with social platforms.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1703

A listener wants to help people with multiple streams of income, and he has a lot of them. He also has a YouTube channel, a podcast, and is trying to keep up with a lot of different networks. Above all, while he has a worthwhile message (it’s helpful and positive), he’s not really seeing the traction and growth that he’d like.

What should he do? Moreover, what if you find yourself in this situation? What if you’re planning to debut one of these things—a YouTube channel, podcast, TikTok, or something else. How do you choose which one, which others are essential, and how can you avoid going crazy?

“Hey Chris, this is Brooks Conkle from Alabama, long time listener of the show, probably listen to hundred plus episodes. My side hustle is my personal brand at BrooksConkle.com. So obviously I have the blog. I have a podcast. I have a YouTube channel, even make TikTok content. So my question to you is your thoughts on should I triple down and create on one channel at a time or should I look at growing evenly and creating on all channels at one time? Obviously, growth is a little bit slower if I do that, given my time constraints. But I’m curious to see what your thoughts are, whether to buckle down or spread the time out.”

Accountant Sells $20,000 in Knitting Kits

What It’s About

An accountant weaves multiple streams of income from her knitting hobby.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

“Make sure that you enjoy whatever it is that you are making,” Traci says. “Even if you have to make it hundreds of times!”

Fun Fact

In the past, Traci has had other side hustles such as teaching horseback riding, flipping video games on eBay, and even started the process of starting her own small business accounting firm.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1702
When Traci Lee was a kid, her mom taught her to knit so she wouldn’t be bored. When she picked up the hobby again in college, she decided to try selling her handiwork.

This was the summer of 2011, when Etsy was just starting to take off as a platform for selling handmade goods. Traci launched a shop called RamsGirl Design. With a stockpile of scarves already created, she spent less than $50 to get started, mostly on yarn. She already had a laptop and digital camera, and there were no initial startup fees, just a $0.20 listing fee for each item.

Even though the financial investment was small, she made a much bigger time investment in learning how to sell physical items online and how to optimize her listings for search results.

This investment has paid off. Throughout the years, she’s regularly made an extra five figures a year from her side project, and in 2020, she made $20,000. The biggest key has been a big switch she made in what she sold.

RamsGirl Design started out selling Traci’s handknit items, but it expanded into knitting patterns a few years later. Later, she added knitting kits and fiber arts swag like tote bags and mugs printed with cheeky sayings.

The knitting kits in particular have been a huge part of Traci’s success, especially during the pandemic. Crafting tools in general were popular during lockdown because people were looking for something to do at home, and she believes they’ll continue to sell well. These kits generally contain everything a beginning knitter needs to get started: yarn, knitting needles, a pattern, and a cotton project bag.

Traci admits that trying to be a jack of all trades in her business has kept the growth a bit slower than it could have been. In retrospect, she says she probably would have hired some experts earlier on in the process.

However, she’s just hired a social media manager and with the time savings, she hopes to work on self-publishing her first knitting pattern book.

Q&A: “I’d like to be a medical claims adjustor, but for weddings”

What It’s About

Today’s caller wants to borrow model from one industry and apply it to another.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1701

If you’re looking for a less-obvious way to make money, it can be helpful to think about transferring your skills in some way, or adapting one industry to another.

If that sounds vague, we’re going to make it very specific in this question and answer episode. A listener has an idea to become a wedding consultant who is effectively a claims adjustor, helping couples to pay less. She’ll explain more. It’s certainly an interesting idea, but is it viable?

“You profiled a freelance medical claims adjustor, who helps people negotiate lower hospital bills. It got me thinking: could there be room for this kind of role in another industry? The one I was thinking of was weddings. Anyone who’s ever had a wedding (or paid for one…) knows that they get expensive. In fact, an event planner told me that lots of service providers charge a higher price for weddings than for other events, just because the whole industry does it so they can get away with it. That’s crazy! Therefore … what do you think about a side hustle that helps couples pay less, perhaps by negotiating bulk rates with venues, photographers, flower shops, and so on?”

Failure Friday: “I didn’t know my business partner was a convicted felon…”

What It’s About

As a drone education business takes off, how does the owner navigate a delicate obstacle?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1700

Today’s short story features Alan Perlman, whose business is headquartered in Nashville but the team works remotely. We told the successful story of his “drone university” on Episode #500. But they had some struggles along the way. Let’s hear from them about one of those struggles… I’ll be back at the end to wrap us up.

Listen to today’s episode to learn more…
