Q&A: Can you import contact lenses for resale?

What It’s About

Today’s listener has a clear vision to import contact lenses from overseas.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1824

There are certain things that are much more expensive in some countries than others, simply because industries have lobbied for monopoly control or price protection from the government.

One of the best examples of this is glasses and contact lenses. I wear contacts and when I was traveling abroad much more regularly, I’d always plan to buy them when I was overseas. Inevitably it was much cheaper and I didn’t need a prescription.

A listener discovered this recently himself, and he saved a lot of money. It also got him thinking: since the price is so much lower outside the U.S., and a lot of Americans wear contacts, can he buy them in bulk while he’s traveling—or even pay to have them shipped over—and start his own resell business?

“On a trip to Argentina a while ago, I learned that it’s possible to buy the same brands of contact lenses in countries outside the U.S. for much cheaper—like sometimes 40-50% cheaper! Sometimes the brands use a different name, but the product is exactly the same. This makes me think there’s a market opportunity here. Could it work to buy them overseas and sell them here, maybe on eBay or Facebook Marketplace? You also need a prescription to buy them in the U.S., but in other countries you just walk in and tell them what you want. I’m not sure how I’d handle that part and if I’d need to do some sort of verification or not.”

New App Designer Jumps Into No-Code Development

What It’s About

An designer downloads a way to create new apps—no coding required!

Words of Wisdom

Karla says to start now so you stand out from the crowd. Don’t wait until more people start developing no-code apps. She predicts it will soon be a common tech skill to have.

Fun Fact

As of December 2021, there was a combined total of almost 16 million apps available across all App Stores, including Apple, Google Play, and Amazon.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1823
Karla Fernandes began her career as a graphic designer at age fifteen, learning everything she could about layout and print for newspapers, magazines, and corporate materials. From there, it was an easy migration to digital media where she learned HTML and backend programming languages. She loved the creative process—and soon realized there were a lot of bad web designers out there. Karla wanted to do better.

So way back in 2006 she quit her job to open her own UX/UI business where she improves how users interact with web-based products. She called it Vitamina K.

In 2020, Karla was taking an educational vacation. This is something she does every year. She dedicates an entire month to learning something new. This time, she had learned about no-code development a few months earlier and in December she started using a tool called Bravo Studio which allowed her to create apps with no coding needed.

While Bravo Studio is free to use, Karla upgraded to a $399 package that removed the company’s branding and gave her other benefits.

How does it work? Well, when you’re creating a regular app, you need to write complex scripts that have logic and rules behind them to make the app do what you want it to do. This is a long process, and you might need two different development teams: one for Android, and one for Apple’s operating system. It could take anywhere from six months to two years to get your app ready to market.

Karla began getting app development clients by reaching out to people while she was still learning how to do it herself. After she had a few apps of her own under her belt, people started coming to her. As a new Bravo Studio expert, she’s featured on their website and people can hire her to complete an app project for them. She’ll also troubleshoot any issues people are having, or even teach them how to use the tool themselves.

What does this add up to? Between the apps, the freelance work, and her new class, Karla’s earning about $6,000 per month [ what about the actual apps though? how much does ScarfApp bring in?]from her no-code, app-making project. Not bad at all for something that came from a month-long educational vacation!

Q&A: What’s the best platform for my idea?

What It’s About

Today’s listener wants to know what comes first: the idea or its best platform?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1822

Welcome to the final week of the year!

We’ve looked at the question of whether you build your idea with a platform in mind, or if you start with an idea and then consider which platform might be best. Both approaches have merit—I tend to lean more towards the second, but we’ve seen plenty of successful case studies that use more of the first.

Today’s caller has a similar-but-different question: what’s the best platform for his idea, and can he just remain “platform agnostic” in the sense of not being loyal to any of them?

Let’s see how we can help him, and perhaps some of our other listeners as well. Thanks, listeners!

“Hi Chris, this is Rob and I’ve been following the show for a couple of years. Is there such a thing as being “platform agnostic?” I think a lot of people get their ideas for a business by looking at Instagram or TikTok or some other app, then developing a version of whatever seems to be working. From what I can tell, this is especially true in the beauty and makeup category, which is what I’m interested in. But might it be better to not have a platform in mind at first, and instead start with business fundamentals like customer avatar and my unique offer? What do you think?”

Marketing Analyst Serves Up Gluten-Free Profit

What It’s About

Seeing a lack of good tasting gluten-free food, this blogger creates and shares her own recipes.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Addison shares a fun life pro-tip: “Life is too short. Never quit your daydream!”

Fun Fact

Addison is not only a health-conscious, gluten-free chef. She’s also a former Division 1 soccer star, which she says is by far the most challenging and fulfilling experience of her life. Apparently, she doesn’t have an off switch because she’s also completed two full marathons as well!

Notes from Chris

Episode 1821
Many of us can’t imagine a life without bread, pasta, and pizza. The majority of eaters out there don’t consider gluten-free as a viable option.

Adding to the challenge, many alternative recipes get a bad reputation as being a poor substitute for foods we love. Enter Addison Labonte—today’s featured side hustler–who decided it was time to make gluten-free cooking approachable, fun, and most importantly, delicious, for everyday home cooks.

A marketing analyst by day, in 2018 Addison had the idea to start an online food photography and recipe blog. A few years earlier, she had gone gluten-free to address some medical issues. As she got used to her new diet, friends and family enjoyed her reports on what she was whipping up in the kitchen. Presto! The ingredients for a food focused blog began to blend together.

Though she was confident in her abilities to cook healthy and delicious recipes, Addison admits to not being computer savvy. She could write recipes, but didn’t know where to start to get her content online. So, she hired an agency to set up her blog, which she called Organically Addison.

To build her audience, social media (mostly Instagram) became her gluten-free bread and butter. And to grow that audience, Addison put on her analyst hat—because that’s what she does for her day job. Rather than just “try everything,” Addison choose to measure what worked and what didn’t.

How did it work out? Well, by consistently posting eye-catching photos and a new weekly recipe, Addison’s blog viewership grew and she was able to monetize it within the first year of launch. Through just a few different advertising channels, she’s taken an initial investment of $1,000 and turned it into a recurring $5,000 a month business.

As for what’s next, she’s content with keeping her main job while working on her blog. She loves the balance and benefits she gets from doing both. In a way, it’s like having your gluten-free cake and eating it too.

SPECIAL Q&A: Overnight delivery impacted by supply chain crisis

What It’s About

Today’s caller is usually quite jolly, but global issues have got him worried.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1820

Season’s greetings!

A very special listener question came in overnight. We never repeat stories or callers here—I always want to give you something fresh and new—but in this case, the same caller we heard from last year is back with a new challenge.

He’s in the business of making a lot of deliveries in a concentrated period of time. Over the years he’s had to deal with a lot of difficulties and challenges, but perhaps none greater than the holiday seasons of 2020 and now 2021.

Let’s go to a remote location for this question … after the non-seasonal yet still relevant message from our sponsor.

“Hi Chris, my name is Kris as well and I’m calling once again from my warehouse in the northern part of Finland. For the past several hundred years I’ve been going around the world every December to deliver gifts to children … but the past two years have been harder than anything I can remember! I called in last year to complain about how kids weren’t excited about getting hand sanitizer in their stocking … and also the fact that a lot of parents didn’t want strange men in their homes. Well, good news: it was hard, but we got through the worst of it! … or so I thought. This year, we’re all doing better. Countries are reopening and I’m heading out to Thailand shortly. And I’m happy to report that all of the elves are fully vaccinated! Unfortunately, we have another serious problem on our hands: the global supply chain crisis. I’ve got a long list of stops to make, and half of my stock is stuck on container ships somewhere in the middle of the ocean. How can we save Christmas … again??”

Failure Friday: “I had to take a hard look at my business model…”

What It’s About

When algorithm changes strike, this business changes the radio dial.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1819

Happy Christmas Eve!

I believe we can learn as much from failure as we can from success, if not more. It’s with this principle in mind that I offer you a weekly segment called Failure Friday: a collection of short stories all about mistakes, missteps, disasters, and of course, failure.

Just like our Throwback Thursday segment, you’ll hear directly from side hustlers who have struggled to get something off the ground. They’ll tell you a short story of something that went very wrong.

The stories will vary, but often it starts with an idea, what they thought would happen and what really happened—and of course, what they learned.

Today’s short story features Allen Chiang. We told the successful story of his Retro Radio Farm project on Episode #535.

2020 was a strong year—but 2021 he ran into some big problems.

Q&A: How much money can you make per subscriber?

What It’s About

Today’s caller is interested about the money making potential of each subscriber.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1817

As you go from idea to actual business where you’re building an email list and maintaining long-term relationships with subscribers, you want to know how much money those subscribers are producing.

Ideally, you want a high customer lifetime value, because you can then spend money to attract more subscribers.

It’s kind of like achieving a positive ROI on ad spending from Facebook or Google: once you get the formula right, where you’re earning more than you spend—even if it’s a relatively small amount—you can ramp up and spend more and more.

Achieving this winning formula is easier said than done, of course. With customer value, though, it’s not about spending, it’s about earning—how much is each subscriber worth?

That’s what our listener is wondering about today.

“Hi there Chris, this is Mackenzie and I’ve been listening to the show for a while now. I’ve heard that when you build up a newsletter list and offer products for sale, an important metric to track is lifetime value per subscriber. What are some ballpark numbers for this? If I’m able to get 1,000 subscribers to my list, for example, and I sell them products on an ongoing basis—but not too often, because I don’t want them to get tired of promotions and unsubscribe—what kind of return can I expect? “

‘Jack n Ginger’ Admin Designs Island-Life Jewelry

What It’s About

Inspiration strikes for a Hawaiian-style line of jewelry.

Words of Wisdom

Michelle shares an important lesson about networking, “One of the most valuable things for me was connecting with other small business owners. Learning their stories and business strategies have helped me exponentially. Even having them to talk to as someone to understands the stresses.”

Fun Fact

Michelle used to be a wedding and family photographer but felt burned out—so now she sticks to jewelry.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1816
In high school, Michelle Gulden was always the girl making beaded and hemp necklaces in study hall. In her twenties, she started making jewelry for gifts. Those gifts turned into friends buying for other friends. This self-taught jeweler then started throwing jewelry parties—and now she operates an Etsy shop called jack & ginger.

People have lots of theories about why Michelle picked that name. Some think it’s named for pets or family members. Some assume it’s for plants. The truth is, she picked the name after sitting in a bar drinking a jack & ginger—a nice simple drink! A friend suggested it and the name stuck.

At the time, Michelle lived on the island of Oahu (that would be Hawaii…) so her jewelry was heavily influenced by island style and uses natural materials. She found all the sea glass and shells herself, and loved the element of hand picking what she works with. She describes her customers as “those that love an endless summer.”

The business grew mostly through word of mouth. She worked in tourism back then, so guests would comment on her jewelry—and her coworkers wore it, too. Online, Instagram has been the most helpful tool. Her account (@hijacknginger) has grown slowly but now has over 8,000 loyal followers.

Sales fluctuate and are now averaging $4,000-5,000/month. She works part-time as an office admin three days a week but jack & ginger has grown into a nearly full-time job.

Going forward, she hopes to add more retail accounts so her work can get into more boutiques for people to enjoy. She also hopes to do more pop-up events so she can get out and meet customers, too.

Finally, she’s in the process of building a Shopify storefront so she can have her own website separate from Etsy.

Q&A: How much of side hustling is dependent on the broader economy?

What It’s About

Today’s listener has a big question about global trends.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1815

Welcome to a new week!

A question we’ve never considered before: is side hustling dependent on the broader economy?

How might this affect your plans and ideas? If you have an existing side hustle, how much (if at all) do you need to pay attention to what’s happening in the economy?

“Hello there Chris, this is Angela and I’ve been listening to the show since episode one. Over the past two years, the economy has been crazy. The stock market has reached new heights, everyone is quitting their job, and all while we’re seeing huge supply chain problems around the world. I thought the pandemic was going to take us into a huge recession—but clearly I was wrong. You’ve talked about trends a few times. I’m wondering more about the big picture: how much of side hustling is dependent on the broader economy? Do people start taking on extra projects when they’re worried about cash flow or losing their jobs? Is this a good time or a bad time to take a small or medium-sized risk? Thanks and hoping you’ll continue Side Hustle School next year.”
