First $1,000: “I wanted to keep well-trained wellness providers in business…”

What It’s About

A wellness expert finds peace at the start of the pandemic.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1913

Today’s episode is part of a new feature we’re doing in 2022 called ‘Your First $1,000.’ As you might surmise from the title, this is all about how someone made their first $1,000.

How did they get to that point? Not their first $100,000—that’s cool, but it would probably be a long story.

One thing I’ve learned is that once you begin to earn real money, the steps required to go to the next level—whether it’s $1,000 to $2,000, or even to $5,000 or $10,000 are often easier than that first real paycheck.

With that in mind, today’s feature comes from Brooke Thomas in New Haven, Connecticut. Brooke is a leader in the wellness world and has operated several different businesses over the years, including her own body work practice for most of that time.

Fun fact: Brooke’s first $1,000 with this particular business was actually $18,000. Just to be clear—we have not upgraded the segment! It’s just that her first income for this new project came in the form of course registration.

Listen to today’s episode to learn more…

MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:

  • Thanks to Brooke for telling us about their first $1,000. I hope you found it encouraging. Check out her website at brookethomas.me/incubator.

Q&A: How to sell services to people caring for older parents?

What It’s About

Today’s caller sees an opportunity to monetize care of aging parents.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1912

Today’s caller is interested in selling services to people caring for elderly parents. It’s clearly a big market with lots of pressing needs, both logistical and emotional—if you’re a caregiver, you want to know your parents have all that they need, and you probably also want it to not take over your whole life as well.

So what kind of business could our caller design? He’ll share more in his question.

“Hi Chris, this is Dan and I recently found your show on Spotify. Enjoying the stories and helpful content. My parents retired to Florida and live in a large facility that houses hundreds of other retirees. Every time I visit I’m always impressed at how the whole community revolves around the needs of residents. Having them down there has also reminded me that I worry about them sometimes—and of course, a lot of other people have elderly parents that they worry about. As I consider different business ideas, I think I’d like to do something in this field: not for the elderly in particular, but for adult children of the elderly who worry about them. Am I on the right track in getting more specific about a target market?”

Q&A: How to enter the play-to-earn gaming space?

What It’s About

Today’s listener wants to know more about the trending, money-making game, DeFi Kingdoms.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1911

Let’s talk about play-to-earn! Last month on my blog, I published a 4,000 word post about DeFi Kingdoms, a blockchain game and decentralized exchange that I’ve been participating in.

I got a lot of messages about it, including the voice note from this caller.

They want to know more about play-to-earn, this model of playing games and earning real money, sometimes a lot of money. How should they get started and how much money do you need to put in to see good results?

“I read your long blog post about DeFi Kingdoms and found it really interesting. Who knew you could get paid 200% interest while playing an online game?! So now I’m trying to figure out the best entry point. Whether it’s DeFi Kingdoms or another game (it looks like there are several), what’s the best way to get started? Also, how much capital will I need?”

Failure Friday: “My first customer bought out of pity…”

What It’s About

A sustainable cutlery creator had to fork and knife her way to success.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1910

I believe we can learn as much from failure as we can from success, if not more. It’s with this principle in mind that I offer you a weekly segment called Failure Friday: a collection of short stories all about mistakes, missteps, disasters, and of course, failure.

Just like our Throwback Thursday segment, you’ll hear directly from side hustlers who have struggled to get something off the ground. They’ll tell you a short story of something that went very wrong.

The stories will vary, but often it starts with an idea, what they thought would happen and what really happened—and of course, what they learned.

Today’s short story features Ngaire Burgess from Hobart, Australia. We told the successful story of her project on Episode #1219: Tasmanian Insurance Manager Sells Reusable Cutlery Holders.

But as awesome as her story is, she had some challenges in the beginning, including an initial market experience that was suboptimal. In fact, she says she had “an enormous feeling of imposter syndrome…”

Sometimes you have to go through these things to get to the other side.

Listen to today’s episode to learn more…

MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:

  • Thanks to Ngaire for sharing this transparent and truthful story. Check out their website .pocketpicnic.com.au.

TBT: “Pizza City USA” Becomes Book, Podcast, and Festival

What It’s About

A pizza lover turns their tours into a pizza centered empire.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1909

Welcome to Throwback Thursday / “Where are they now?” where we take an in-depth look at someone who’s story has evolved considerably since we first featured them.

Last week, we heard from a vintage store owner in Birmingham, England. Before that, we had the founder of an ecommerce brand focusing on outdoor hockey, as well as a North Carolina orthodontist who invented a better way to treat impacted teeth.

Today, in our latest feature, we’ll hear from Steve Dolinsky, the founder of Pizza City USA, offering walking tours (and more!) from their home base in Chicago.

Since we last featured him, Pizza City USA has survived a pandemic and is now planning a global pizza festival this summer. Let’s hear more about that from Steve.

What’s happened since?

Listen to today’s episode to hear Steve’s updates…

MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:

  • Thanks to Steve for sharing their updates with us. Check out his website at PizzaCityUsa.com. There’s a book, a podcast, walking tours you can take while visiting Chicago and of course that upcoming pizza festival.

Q&A: Should I let my customers choose their own price?

What It’s About

Today’s caller wonders if they should let customers set their own price. Is this a good idea?.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1908

This listener is thinking of letting her customers set their own prices. Is the pay-what-you-will pricing model revolutionary or risky?

I tried this once myself—or I should say I was going to try it—and then a good friend of mine, Brian Clark, talked me out of it. I’ll tell you a little about that and also why I now believe this isn’t the right answer for most projects.

Of course, there are always exceptions, so I’ll mention what those might be as well.

“I’ve been selling a calligraphy set and several add-ons for years. It makes a small amount of money, usually $400 a month on average, but up to $3,000 a month during the holidays. I’ve always struggled with pricing, and lately I’ve been thinking: why not let my customers decide? I like the pay-what-you-will model and I don’t think my customers will choose a price that’s so low that I don’t cover my costs. If nothing else, I could test it, right? I guess what I’m asking is: is there any reason __not__ to let customers choose their price?”

Marine Resells Appliances for Extra $2,000/Month

What It’s About

A former Marine uses his will and YouTube to flip appliances.

Words of Wisdom

Benson mentions that “uncertainty is an important part of [his] business strategy.” Because it was one of his biggest points of worry when starting out, he now tries to focus on the points of the market he can work with. Instead of expecting positive profits, he’s focused on the buyer’s goal.

Fun Fact

Millennials (born 1982-2000) are now the largest age group in the United States, according to Pew Research Center. While most people were dedicated to investing in the stock market, this age group is more interested in real estate as a valuable asset. With stock market investor numbers dwindling, 85 percent of millennials believe real estate to be a great investment.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1907
It might surprise you to know that household appliances used to last 20-25 years when purchased brand new. Today, it isn’t out of the ordinary to replace a washer and dryer after fewer than ten. What happened?

Well, the manufacturing of these appliances has improved in some ways, but clearly not all. Though most people accept the rinse and repeat of the modern market, Benson Gitau saw something he got hung up on.

While looking for appliances to fill his empty house, he found that brand new sets would be bought and sold for $800 daily, but used sets that had a problem or two would sit on the market at $100 for longer.

Many people wouldn’t consider buying used appliances that weren’t working well, but as a former U.S. Marine, Benson saw a whole other ball of lint.

After purchasing the used, broken washer-dryer set of his dreams, he looked up its serial number and began parsing through its parts to figure out what was wrong. He was no stranger to online research—after all, his day job was now in cybersecurity.

Step one was a confidential government database that few have access to … no wait, it was YouTube. Using the appliance’s serial number he searched for instructional guides. He learned that all he needed was a $15 replacement part. From there, it was a quick fix.

After repairing the washing machine, Benson started to put the pieces together for a money machine.

Living in pricey California, he wanted to boost his income. Luckily, the house he owned was a duplex so he was able to rent it out for a small profit. But in California, expenses are everything … so he began buying, repairing, and reselling more appliances.

Benson’s monthly target was $2,000 in net income. At first he stuck with appliances he was familiar with, as well as anything that might have tutorials online. He was soon earning beyond his monthly income target, enough to buy a small truck, pressure washer, and some power tools.

Since he started, Benson has moved to Texas. He’s currently running for election to the U.S. House of Representatives, while still working in cybersecurity and real estate.

He’s a busy guy! Hopefully it works out for him, but if not, he can always sell more appliances.

As you can tell from the title of her previous episode, Jodi has definitely made her first thousand. In fact, the business has only grown from there.

But what about her first $1,000—how did they make that happen, what did it feel like, and what did they learn?

Let’s hear it from Jodi. Among other things, she has several lessons to offer about blogging for profit.

Q&A: Website that offers Black Friday deals all year long?

What It’s About

Today’s listener has an idea to extend the biggest shopping day of the year.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1905

Happy Black Friday—wait, isn’t this March? Well, our caller is thinking of promoting Black Friday sales (and other big sales) all year long.

What would this business model look like? If you had this idea, how could you make money, and how could you make that happen?

“We all know Black Friday sales. For some businesses, they bring in 30% or more of total income. I’d like to create a deal site that highlights these sorts of sales, but all year long. I’d earn affiliate income from purchases, and if it took off, maybe companies would pay for advertising too. What’s the first step? How would I line up those affiliate relationships and build traffic?”

Q&A: Is it legal to sell a guide about magic mushrooms?

What It’s About

Today’s caller wonders if their idea is just a psychedelic dream.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1904

For more than a decade, Oregon was my home base, and the city of Portland in particular was known as being especially open to new ideas. After legalizing cannabis in 2014, the state recently began allowing the legal use of Psilocybin, also known as magic mushrooms.

That’s some background for today’s topic. A listener wants to write a guide to Psilocybin, including reviews, best practices, and how-to—but of course, this wonder drug is not yet legal in most parts of the U.S. and in most other countries.

What then does that mean in terms of their ability to sell a guide that provides information?

“Psilocybin is now legal in several states, and it’s only a matter of time before it expands across the country just like legal cannabis. For now, however, it’s still early days and what’s legal in one state or jurisdiction remains illegal elsewhere. This brings me to my question: I don’t want to sell the actual product, just a guide to its benefits and a directory of where to find it within those legal states. Could I get in trouble for selling this elsewhere even though it’s perfectly legal in some places?”
