At age 28, Lauren Priori was working as a manager for an antique jewelry company in Philadelphia. While she loved her job, she also yearned for something more. Luckily, her bosses—she had four of them—were cool with her having an entrepreneurial spirit and making some extra cash on the side. But the quartet of bosses had no idea she’d be leaving her day job so soon.

You see, Lauren had a lot of good ideas. Her execution, however, wasn’t so great at first.

She started out buying antique jewelry and selling it on Etsy, the online craft marketplace…but her photography skills weren’t up to par, and the business never took off. She also started a line of silver jewelry but didn’t know how to price it properly and sell it to retailers.

But in 2015, Lauren’s friend Megan was ready to get engaged and asked Lauren if she’d help her with the engagement ring. Lauren had never sold an engagement ring before…even though she was a gemologist and knew plenty about diamonds and jewelry manufacturing from her day job. So Lauren asked her favorite diamond dealers to loan her some diamonds to show Megan.

Here’s where Lauren’s day job and her connections came in handy…those dealers would never have loaned out $50,000 worth of diamonds to a stranger. Lauren brought the diamonds home and walked Megan through the diamond selection process, and they settled on a ring design. After paying a deposit, Megan mentioned how much better this was than going to a jewelry store and picking an “off the rack” ring from a glass case. And she told Lauren that she should do this as a business.

Lauren was pretty sure it wasn’t a business—but she was happily wrong. After posting the ring on her personal Instagram, Lauren soon got another order from a friend, and then more friends of friends. A year later, she rented office space and quit her day job to pursue L. Priori Jewelry full-time.

Lauren now has twelve employees in three locations and did more than $1M in sales in 2019. She still trains her sales team to recreate that same personal one-on-one design experience she had with her friend Megan.

Going forward, Lauren plans to keep growing the company with a goal of hitting $50M in revenue. She is also an investor, providing capital and guidance to small businesses that can benefit from her knowledge and experience.

How did they get to that point? Not their first $100,000—that’s cool, but it would probably be a long story.

One thing I’ve learned is that once you begin to earn real money, the steps required to go to the next level—whether it’s $1,000 to $2,000, or even to $5,000 or $10,000 are often easier than that first real paycheck.

With that in mind, today’s feature comes from Rebecca Rogers, the social studies TikTok sensation. We first featured her back on Episode #1641: Social Studies Teacher Gains 1.5 Million TikTok Followers.

She now has much more than 1.5 million, and she’s on multiple social networks. But what about those early days—how did she make that happen, what did it feel like, and what did she learn?

“I’ve been selling on eBay, and I’d like to do more of that. I’m also trying to build a website and learn about coding. And then, of course, I have several other ideas on the back-burner, mostly from listening to the show and hearing cool stories.

I know that I can’t stretch myself too thin, and I also have a day job, but I like doing different things and I want to make sure my income is truly diversified. Therefore I’m wondering: how many income streams is best for the average person? Is there an optimal number? “

I love hearing from people who want to sell me on why their program is so different…

I’ll tell you right now before we hear the question that I don’t have a favorable opinion of this industry. It’s predatory and is responsible for a lot of good people losing their money. But hey, how do I really feel?? Might as well hear the question and see if there’s something to be learned one way or another.

“Have you talked much about network marketing? A close friend of mine is really into it, although she doesn’t call it network marketing or MLM because people have lots of pre-conceived ideas about it.

I’d imagine that it’s like lots of other businesses or companies, in that there are some bad apples but also a lot of lucrative opportunities if you can find your way through the maze. Can you recommend a few of the better ones?”

A consultant wonders how customers are finding them. If you don’t know the answer to this question, you might be doing the wrong things—but how do you find out?

First, why is this important? As I said, you could be making decisions based on incorrect information. You could be spending a lot of time on Instagram even though not a single client has ever found you that way. You could be devoting hours to writing a blog that no one reads. And it’s not just your time, as important as that is—you could be spending money on ads that aren’t converting. But if you have customers coming in from another source, you might misattribute them to the ads and keep wasting money.

You get it, right? Let’s see if we can help this caller.

“Google analytics doesn’t show nearly as much info as it used to. Most search terms are blocked in the reports, so I really don’t know where people are coming from.

I want to invest in some ads for my consulting service but since I know most money spent on advertising is wasted, I want to make sure I spend it in the right place. How can I figure out which website visitors are most profitable?”

Video Game Writing Class Is Real-Life Gamechanger

Who was your favorite teacher in school? Was it your music teacher or your English teacher? Or maybe you had that one really fantastic science teacher that made chemistry come to life for you.

The legendary teacher in today’s story has everyone beat. Her subject? Video games. Her classrooms aren’t brick and mortar; they’re the magical worlds of Legend of Zelda, Banjo Kazooie, Mario Kart, and Pokémon.

Devyn Ricks uses the landscape of these whimsical games to teach creative writing and social skills, engaging her students directly through gameplay. And she does this all online from the comforts of her home. No physical classroom needed. But that’s not all! She also gets paid for this.

Four years ago, Devyn Ricks’s husband started dental school. His student loans weren’t enough to cover their family of six. Devyn, therefore, decided she needed something flexible to help with the bills.

She started teaching English to kids in China through an online company called VIPKid, but her hours were 4am to 6am, which, as she puts it, was the worst schedule ever. Nevertheless, she noticed that several teachers working for VIPKid were jumping ship to find work through another platform called Outschool.

Initially, Devyn charged $12 per student per class—on the lower end of Outschool’s recommended price range of $10-20 dollars.

Next, she had to figure out what to teach. Being fluent in Spanish, Devyn decided to start by teaching Spanish classes. There wasn’t much demand for that, however, so she changed topics. Next, she tried to teach cooking. That didn’t work well either, so she moved on to other ideas.

In short, she was throwing everything she could at it, looking to find her way. But, unfortunately, she wasn’t getting very far.

It was almost game over … until she had an all-new idea. As Devyn continued to brainstorm, she realized her two passions were creative writing and video games—so why not create a class that does both? On a whim, she wrote a description and opened it for registration, hoping that kids would enjoy her innovative mashup. She was right!

This was where she found her niche, and the classes filled up. Not just once, but month after month.

Her flagship class, “Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild Creative Writing Class,” spawned even more classes. Her roster now features Animal Crossing and Mario Kart, among others.

One year after starting at Outschool, Devyn brings in $4,000 each month, teaching just 25 hours per week. Her earnings mean that her husband can stay focused on his dental schooling, and they can avoid additional student loans.

Miss Devyn (as she’s known to her students) has big plans for the future. First, she’s wielding her gaming superpowers to continue to level-up her business. She hopes to create an organization within Outschool, meaning that other teachers will work for her teaching video game social club classes. Her next goal is to monetize her YouTube Channel.

There’s a new trend in the wild world of NFTs: it comes from creators and sometimes companies offering free NFTs (digital artwork) during an initial mint process.

Why do they do this? Well, for a couple of different reasons.

Our caller mentions a recent project called Goblintown. Those assets were minted for free—anyone could get one—and now they’re selling for a couple of Ether at minimum (thousands of dollars).

So our caller is wondering … where can I get more free NFTs that end up being worth tons of money?!

“What do you think about free NFT mints? I bet you’ve heard of this, but if not, it’s where an online project offers a mint of a few thousand NFTs completely for free—you just pay the gas price, which is sometimes expensive but not always.

The project earns money on reselling, when people flip NFTs for profit to other buyers, paying a commission of 6-10% to the original creator. This got a lot of attention with the Goblintown mint, which is where I heard of it.

Do you think it’s worth it to pick up NFTs when they’re free? I mean, the cost seems like a pretty good deal … but will people really pay for them later?”
