Trio of Friends Generate Wealth With Financial Advice

What It’s About

Looking to diversify their income, three friends invest in themselves as online financial advisors.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Make a plan, however rough it may be, and then just get started. Know what your service/ product will be, how you’ll get in front of customers, and what costs might be involved. Be resourceful and creative; taking outside funding or debt is not always necessary and should not be the first step.

Fun Fact

Robo advisers are a relatively new product, taking advantage of technology to offer customers low fees in what is traditionally an expensive market. Businesses like Polaris, Betterment and Wealthfront are operating in this space, trying to take a slice out of the multi-trillion dollar investment funds industry.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1055

Michael McDermott and two of his friends, Evan and Grant, had a desire to leave their jobs and work on something they were more passionate about. Each of them also had corporate jobs that came with suits, ties, conference calls, and cubicles. Michael worked in operations, Evan in finance, and Grant in marketing. They had salaries and benefits, but something was missing: inspiration and drive.

In fact, they viewed those suits and cubicles as symbols of imprisonment … an 8-5 jail cell for their next forty years. Unless, of course, they made an escape.

In an effort to shorten that time frame, the three friends would talk about investing during sessions at the gym. They figured that a solid investment plan could emancipate them from long commutes and office politics.

However, something interesting surfaced during their research. Very quickly, they realized that the average person has no idea about investing. They either don’t want to know, find it too complicated, or simply get bad advice.

They believed that effective investing offers a realistic path to getting rich slowly and were adamant that everyone should be armed with solid advice.

Thinking quickly, they put a deposit down on an idea. It was an opportunity they saw could become a side business, and possibly something much more. While their original goal was to learn as much as they could about investing, they now felt like they knew enough to offer some sort of product or service to those wanting to do the same.

They noticed that most errors people made with investing were human. They’d invest emotionally, usually in the wrong stocks or bonds, and then get out at the wrong time. Or worse, they wouldn’t invest at all and end up without any savings.

Michael, Evan, and Grant envisioned creating an online platform, commonly called a robo advisor. A robo advisor is similar to a traditional financial adviser, but the service is offered online only. There are no offices, no extraneous staff, and minimal overhead. By forgoing those expenses, they could allow low investment commitments while keeping their own costs low.

The best part was that all three could combine their skills and work on the project together, which they called Polaris Portfolios. They also agreed that the business should be self-funded, which meant no outside investment. They’d have to remain resourceful and solve problems in a cost-effective way, but the lack of funds meant they could keep control.

They built the first version of their website on Weebly—a free website builder—and used LegalZoom to incorporate. They also needed to obtain certification to become qualified advisers. After that, they invested three thousand dollars of their own money into the venture for any ongoing expenses. It made for a total of around four thousand in startup costs.

Michael, Evan and Grant are now all in on Polaris Portfolios, and have left their jobs to dedicate themselves to it. Their hope is to continue to keep compounding their efforts all while improving services for their customers.

After investing their time into escaping traditional employment, the three friends are starting to see real dividends.

Animator Re-Animates His Income Selling Graphic Kits

What It’s About

An animator launches his hustle into action, monetizing his motion graphics.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Peter discovered an unconventional way to market his products, “Funny is Money! I decided to think about an anti-marketing campaign to sort of mock the product. I found that self-deprecation was really fun to work with and as a result, I got some really good reactions from folks on social media and blogs.”

Fun Fact

When Walt Disney created the first animated film in 1928 he did it with only two animators who hand drew cells. In 1995, Toy Story, the first computer animated movie, took 27 animators working exclusively on computers.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1039
Peter Quinn is a proud resident of Los Angeles. While the cost of living is high, the weather and job opportunities more than make up for it. Luckily for him, he was able to grab one of those opportunities a couple of years ago.

He’s currently the director of motion design, animation and photography at Dollar Shave Club. He gets to make funny promotional videos for ads on Facebook and Instagram everyday. He also animates anything else the company needs. Before this role, Peter worked in a range of different animation and design roles for companies, agencies, and sometimes freelance.

By his own admission, his job is pretty cool. But like any job, it has its downsides. Much of Peter’s work is repetitive and he doesn’t have a lot of autonomy over what he works on, when he does it, or how it looks. In fact, often an animation will need to be repeated over and over again in different videos. This can can be demotivating for designers.

Over the years he learned to be as efficient as possible. A big part of this was using predefined animations in Adobe After Effects—a popular software program for animators. These effects are loaded up whenever they’re needed, and can save him minutes or even hours per video.

As he added more and more predefined animations to his repertoire, his workflow sped up significantly. Eventually, Peter even created a huge inventory of effects that replicated the user interfaces on movies like Minority Report and Iron Man.

After a couple of years, he’d built up hundreds of time saving animations. Around the same time, he made the biggest financial commitment of his life: he took out a mortgage to buy a home.

Staring into a thirty-year financial commitment terrified him. He decided to explore ways that he could make money on the side, with the goal of paying down that mortgage faster and getting his freedom back a little sooner.

He instantly thought of his animation toolkit. He figured since it was so useful to him, there must be other animators out there who could benefit from it. So, with the help of a programmer, he packaged up all the animations into a software plugin for Adobe After Effects.

He was already familiar with the site AEScripts.com, a marketplace for people to buy and sell custom After Effects software products. AEScripts had a built-in audience, so it was a no brainer to try and sell his kit there.

In order to stand out from the crowd, Peter made a humorous video to sell the product. In it, he mocked the mundane parts about animating and poked fun at himself. He hoped people browsing the site would enjoy the video and be enticed to purchase.

He called his product pack PQ FUI Toys—pronounced foo-eee! Aside from his time, which he’d already spent on the job, his startup costs were practically zero. Within days, Peter had made his first sale of many.

It would have been easy to stop there, but Peter went back to the drawing board instead.

Once again he looked at the requirements of his day job for another product idea. He realized he spent a lot of time looking and creating textures, something all animators need. For example, to animate wood, a designer doesn’t have to draw every pixel. Instead, they apply a texture file to the animation which adds the effect for them.

Finding good textures was difficult, and almost always expensive. Peter saw another opportunity, and began designing his second product.

Using a high quality camera, he spent months taking pictures of different types of textures: concrete, timber, cardboard and anything that looked interesting. By the end, he had one hundred and sixty unique texture files. He packaged them up into his next product, PQ Grit Kit.

All these strategies have done incredibly well for Peter so far. In 2018 he made $34,000 selling his PQ kits. For 2019 that number is already at $40,000. PQ Grit Kit has sold over fifteen hundred copies and PQ FUI Toys over twelve hundred.

For now, Peter is still working his day job and plowing all his additional income onto his mortgage. He believes he can pay the whole thing off in as little as eight years instead of thirty. When that’s done, Peter can start designing his next act.

Newlyweds Operate Campground Booking Biz From RV

What It’s About

A newlywed couple traveling with their RV drive into a helpful solution for booking campsites.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

A few years ago, Heath told his friend Kevin that he was ready to go all-in, but Kevin responded with some advice that Heath has never forgotten. He said, “Companies don’t run out of money, but founders do.” It took 3x longer than they expected to start generating revenue and if they hadn’t had multiple revenue streams outside of the business, they could have run out of funding.

Fun Fact

Although many people associate owning an RV with people well into their 60s and 70s, the average age of an RV owner is 48. In fact, more RVs are owned by people aged from 35 to 54 than any other age group!

Notes from Chris

Episode 1017

As a newly married couple, Heath and Alyssa Padgett were looking for somewhere to call their own. There were many places across the U.S. that they could see themselves living in. Any one of those places might be the perfect spot for their honeymoon. But, when they began to map it out, they noticed that their dream destinations formed a huge zig zag-like pattern all across the country.

The more they thought about it, the more it made sense to take the trip in an RV. If they were going all over the country, why not drive it and get to sightsee along the way? They also had an idea about creating a documentary centered around hourly workers. From there, the idea evolved into Heath working an hourly job in each of the 50 states.

Not only was it the perfect chance to see the country and bring their documentary to life, the couple was also unsatisfied with their current jobs and ready to try something new.

With that, they decided to drive into it head first, only four days after their wedding in May of 2014.

As they moved from campsite to campsite in their RV, they began to notice a problem. At many of the campgrounds, they couldn’t reserve their spot ahead of time. Heath and Alyssa couldn’t believe that in this day and age, there wasn’t some kind of online booking tool available. Instead, they had to drive hours to a campsite and hope that there would be a spot left for them.

For a while, this was just a nuisance. But it turned into an opportunity when Heath met up with a friend he had made through a Facebook group called The RV Entrepreneur. Another member of the group, Bob, just happened to be passing through the town Heath and Alyssa were parked at, so they decided to meet up. They ended up having a long conversation about the difficulties of booking campground spots and the potential to create a solution.

They let the idea sit for six months while they were finishing up the documentary. Then in the Fall of 2016, they decided to really get the wheels turning. Heath and Bob envisioned an app that campgrounds could use to allow customers to book online. They purchased the domain name CampgroundBooking.com and began to draw up some prototype sketches—but they soon ran into some technical challenges.

They knew that they wouldn’t be able to move forward with the design unless they got some help. So, going back to the RV Entrepreneur Facebook group, Heath made a post asking around for people who had strong backgrounds in tech. They got a lot of responses, and they ended up bringing someone named Paul onto the team.

With Paul on board, they were really able to start developing their idea. They spent most of 2017 working on the beta version of the software and performing some test runs. Finally, in January of 2018, they were ready for their first client.

Since the launch of Campground Booking, they have processed over $1.5 million dollars in bookings. Last summer they processed $200,000 worth of bookings per month. You could say it’s the wheel deal.

Heath and Alyssa achieved all this while working on other projects, from starting the RV Entrepreneur Summit, which evolved from the Facebook group, to Alyssa publishing a book, to welcoming their first child, a daughter named Ellie, into the world last May.

College Student Pays Off Loans With “Fitnancial” Blog

What It’s About

A student climbs out of debt by sharing her personal story of transformation.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Alexis says that she waited so long to start a side hustle because she was afraid of what could go wrong. She encourages others who hope to have a side hustle to consider what could go right. “Think about the positives, the opportunities, and how anything is possible, as cliche as that sounds.”

Fun Fact

Alexis used the extra cash that she made from her blog to take her mom on her dream vacation, an Alaskan cruise. One of their favorite memories from the trip was from the very last night. Along with a few other passengers, they were watching the sunset from the back of the boat when a whale came up over the water.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1008

The year was 2011. The first Thor movie had just come out, Adele’s Rolling in the Deep was at the top of the charts, and Alexis Shroeder had just graduated from high school.

As is the case for many students, those four years were rough. But Alexis had to deal with issues far worse than failed tests and friend drama. She lost her father to cancer, struggled with family issues, and was in an abusive relationship.

As time went on, Alexis developed depression. She turned to alcohol and cigarettes to cope, but ended up feeling even worse than she did before. As a consequence, she ended up gaining a lot of weight.

She hit a tipping point when her family’s house was being foreclosed. Alexis needed something in her life to change for the better. So, she decided to work with a personal trainer. With regular exercise and a change in her diet, she felt much better than she ever had. She had the strength, energy, and dedication to be active. She started to kickbox, hike, rollerblade and go for walks.

Her friends were amazed at the 180-degree change they saw with her health. They soon began encouraging her to start a blog about her journey.

Alexis thought about it for a while, then eventually decided to launch Fitnancials.com in 2013. She didn’t just want to talk about health, she also wanted to talk about managing money. The combination was important.

Over the next few years, Alexis casually posted on Fitnancials a couple of times a month. She only spent an hour or two a month working on it, but she enjoyed the process. It felt like a personal journal, just one that other people could read and draw encouragement from.

Soon, however, something else would change. The blog started to pick up a decent amount of traffic. Companies began to ask if they could advertise on the sidebars of her website—or if she would be willing to do sponsored posts.

As a college student looking to pay the bills, Alexis jumped at the opportunity to make some extra cash from her hobby. At first she earned a few hundred dollars a month from Fitnancials, which went a long way for someone with a low income.

After gaining some traction, she started talking to other bloggers. She made new friends, both offline and virtually. Through this process, Alexis realized that people really could make a living from blogging. Real life examples were all around her!

So in 2017, four years after she first started Fitnancials, Alexis committed to treating her blog like a business. She wanted it to grow, and she knew that only spending a couple of hours on it a month would not get her to the level she hoped for.

It turns out, Alexis’s ideas to improve her blog were right on the money. She began to make $1,000 a month, then $3,000. She even climbed up to making $5,000 a month.

In her first year of committing to her blog, she made $35,000. This was while she was still attending college.

Then, in her second year, between her junior and senior years of college, Alexis made $80,000. This is more money than she ever expected to make in a year in her life. Since then, she’s graduated with a degree in psychology and has been able to pay off all of her student loan debt, buy a car, and start maxing out her retirement accounts.

Her biggest and most important life transformation was for herself, overcoming those major challenges she experienced in adolescence. But her second transformation is helping others make their own positive changes … in both fitness and financials.

Layoff Leads Journalist to Build Kindle eBook Empire

What It’s About

After being laid off, a journalist travels the world self-publishing eBooks.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Kyla has some thoughts regarding whether or not to scale your business, “I spent most of last year trying to scale up and build a massive business around publishing, with a stable of writers and editors to outsource to. I learned from that experience that I don’t like managing people — I’d rather just write it myself! So despite what you hear in the entrepreneurial community, sometimes it’s OK not to scale. I love being a solopreneur, and that’s OK, too.”

Fun Fact

When working on her first book, Kyla found the mere thought of writing a book almost too intimidating to take on. It was only through cutting up the process into bite-size chunks, and refining each one, that she became successful.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1006

We don’t all get into side hustles for the same reason. Some of us want to leave our day jobs, others just want extra income. For Kyla Gardner, it was all about having the freedom and flexibility to go where she wanted, when she wanted.

Kyla earned a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from Northern Illinois University, and then snagged a job as a reporter at an online news startup in Chicago. She covered breaking news, local crime, and human-interest features. She was skilled at the work and loved it, but something was missing.

So she made a big change, signing on to a customer service role that involved three months of training in Vietnam, before working as a remote employee. She got the freedom she wanted from that job, and worked there until she was let go.

Good thing she’d already been side hustling for nine months.

It all started with a coworker. When Kyla found out he was making $1,500 a month publishing Kindle ebooks, her interest was piqued.

He lent her a $100 Kindle course he had learned from, and she took the plunge. She admits that most of what the course covered could probably be found on the internet for free, but having it all organized in one package made things easier.

She learned all about finding a profitable niche and optimizing your Amazon listing for keyword rankings. Then she began to experiment, writing short how-to guides in the form of ebooks that she listed for sale on the platform.

It took six months—and her first two ebooks—before she made a total of $60 in royalty payments. Small as the amount was, that was the moment Kyla realized that Kindle Publishing could actually be a viable income.

One of the keys Kyla discovered to publishing on Kindle is the importance of topical research. The market is huge. To make sure her books stand out, she looks for an underserved niche, and then pays attention to the negative reviews for books already written in that field.

This business is extremely low-risk. You might not be profitable from the beginning, but as long as you’ve done the right research, it’s hard to lose money writing for Kindle. Kyla’s first book costs were $100 on custom illustrations, and $10 for a cover design.

What are the results? Kyla now has even more the freedom to travel and live where she likes, while writing about topics that fascinate her. She’s published more than 50 short ebooks since her side hustle became her full-time job in 2017. When she first made the transition, nine months after she started, she was making $350 a month. Now, she makes between $3,500-$7,000 a month in profit.

She’s currently transitioning from the world of how-to and self-help to writing fiction under her own name. She’s already published “Greyhound at the Gravesite”, a cozy murder mystery, and is now working on “Guru,” a suspense novel about digital nomads trying to survive a nightmare in Thailand. If all goes well, they’ll be bestsellers on Kindle.

Data Scientist Turns Teaching Frustrations Into Recurring Income

What It’s About

His students spent way too much time on setup, so this analytics manager and college teacher found a better way.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

I had trouble getting the first real sale (i.e., not one of my students) in the beginning. I was seeing visits to my website but not conversion to purchase. Once I offered a “freemium” plan which allowed users to test out the platform for free, I was getting sign-ups.

Fun Fact

Nathan takes real interview questions from real customers, rewrites them, and then publishes them as learning modules so that his users get to improve their skills with real challenges they’ll encounter in the workforce.

Notes from Chris

Episode 991

Twice a week, when Nathan Rosidi wraps up work as a strategy and analytics manager at a biotech company, he heads over the University of San Francisco, where he’s an adjunct teacher. His classes are about technical coding—usually Python and SQL languages—but most of his students are not so technical. And this was a problem.

The first thing a student has to do to learn coding is actually set up the software on the computer—and it’s not always easy. Many intelligent students spend days getting everything in order, which starts them off in a negative headspace and puts the class behind schedule.

Nathan knew there had to be an easier way to teach coding without going through this mess every semester. He wanted to be a teacher, not an IT helpdesk person: less time on setup, more time on teaching. One day, while immersed in technical support for his students, he remembered an idea he’d had years before.

When he was just beginning his career in analytics, he wanted to find ways to improve his coding skills to make him more prepared for job interviews. He looked all over for a web-based platform where he could practice Python on SQL exercises, but there wasn’t anything that was easy to use. There were coding courses, but they all started from square one and required installing complex software—definitely not the fast, easy approach to building skills that Nathan wanted.

In December of 2017, Nathan pieced together the back-end of the platform, which he named StrataScratch.” He found a developer on Upwork and paid him $1,000 to create the front-end interface. Adding the two parts together, he had a basic, working product.

In January of 2018—just a month after he began working on StrataScratch—he offered the platform to his new students for free. They liked it right away. It was so much easier to get students learning actual coding, rather than wasting time just getting their computers set up.

Nathan had to find a different approach, but first he had to identify the problem. He knew his questions and exercises were well-made. He knew they could help students and young professionals improve their skills and prepare for jobs. He just had to find a way to convince them to pay for it. To do that, he had to overcome the objection of whether it was really going to be helpful or not—and to solve that problem, they needed to be able to try StrataScratch for free.

With this logical process in mind, he set up a “freemium” version—a full-featured version of the platform that contained a few of the first modules. This would give interested students and young professionals a taste of what the full version provided. And it worked.

Nathan is still in build-mode, trying to make StrataScratch as useful as it can possibly be for his current users. He’s investing much of his earnings to pay writers to create new modules, and developers to upgrade the servers and improve the platform.

But with over 500 lessons now in the bank, he’s getting ready to switch to scale-mode. That means making more marketing content, and testing the waters of Google Ads. If all goes well, it won’t be long before StrataScratch is a well-known name in the Python and SQL learning space—and to think, a resource like this didn’t exist until he decided to build it.

3D Printing Brings Cosplay Into 21st Century

What It’s About

An engineer takes customized cosplay to the next level with a 3D printer.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

A self-described nerd, Nikko has a good sense of what others in the community will like. But no one can get it right all of the time. For example, he felt certain that a figurine of a popular female cosplayer and a Batman design would sell like crazy … but in fact, they proved unpopular sellers. It goes to show that it’s important to test. Sometimes your most confident assumptions could be incorrect.

Fun Fact

Nikko swears that the applications for 3D printing are endless. As a matter of fact, he’s even used his printer to create custom shelving and a velociraptor shower head for his kids!

Notes from Chris

Episode 977

For his day job, Nikko Mendoza controls natural gas lines to make sure they’re safe. And like a lot of parents who work long hours, he’s always looking for a way to make the time he had to spend with his kids really count. Two years ago, this desire converged with another goal of his: to earn a substantial income apart from his day job.

His two young children loved dressing up in costumes, superheroes being a particular favorite. Iron Man was one of their favorites, so he wanted to build an Iron Man suit.

And he did. His first full suit was crafted from foam floor mats. It looked okay for an initial attempt, but he wanted to improve. When he found an Instagram post showing an Iron Man suit with incredible detail, Nikko was intrigued. He reached out to the creator who told him the suit was 3D printed. This led to better costumes for his kids … and what he called Nikko Industries in December 2017.

It started by reselling designs for others to purchase and use to print out their own costumes and props. He made a website using Wix and ran a Facebook group where he promoted his designs. Costs were a little over $1,000, including $800 for the 3D printer itself. He used a pre-order method for his designs so there was no out of pocket expense.

On his website, Nikko Industries, he sells digital files that buyers can print themselves. But realizing that not many people own 3D printers, Nikko also decided to print out the designs and sell them through an Etsy store. The designs cost Nikko between $13-$20 to print, and they sell for $75-$100.

When Nikko opened the store, he set his goals low, hoping to bring in around $200 in the first month. But he underestimated his customer’s desire for a costume that would blow typical cosplay outfits out of the water. He brought in $2,000 that first month. He actually had to halt the growth of the store as it was summer and he wanted to spend more time with his kids while they were on break.

In his first year, he had revenue of $50,000 but reinvested earnings back into the business. This year, he is on track for a revenue of $100,000, doubled sales in a year without spending a dime on advertising. After paying expenses and continuing to reinvest, he’s now taking home a profit of $3,000 or more each month.

This additional income is allowing Nikko to pay off debt incurred by a previously failed side hustle, a fitness bootcamp which saw him lose more than $100,000. (Lesson: don’t do that!) He’s also using the money to take his kids on vacations and save for a new home.

You can’t manufacture money using a 3D printer … but this is the next best thing.

Type 1 Diabetes Doesn’t Stop This Nomadic Blogger

What It’s About

A traveling couple helps people living with Type 1 Diabetes see the world.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

There are a lot of travel bloggers out there, but there are still opportunities to get started. In order to be successful though, you have to ask yourself what you can bring to the conversation that isn’t already being discussed. Whenever possible, niche down and find new ways to share content!

Fun Fact

At least 1.25 million Americans are living with T1D, including about 200,000 youth (less than 20 years old)

New research is exploring possible cures for Type 1 diabetes, like an artificial pancreas system to monitor and automate blood sugar control in the body.

Notes from Chris

Episode 949
It would seem that no matter where you look online these days, there’s another travel blog. But does that mean that there are no longer any opportunities for those looking to monetize their overseas adventures?

Well, as college students Bradley Williams and Cazzy Magennis discovered, it’s still possible, but if you want to stand out, you need to focus your efforts.

Cazzy had always dreamed of traveling the world, and she started saving up for grand adventures from an early age. But that dream came to a halt when she was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.

For those not familiar with the condition, Type 1 Diabetes is not preventable, and there is no known cure. It’s a condition that must be constantly and carefully managed with insulin—either via injections or an insulin pump. Diabetics measure their blood-sugar levels throughout the day with finger pricks or by wearing a continuous glucose monitor. On top of all that, if insulin gets too hot, or if it freezes, it becomes ineffective—adding another complication when traveling.

Having hoped for a carefree, vagabond life, Cazzy was devastated.

But she also wasn’t interested in letting that diagnosis become her only reality. Three months later, Cazzy set off—insulin pump in hand—to see the world. It wasn’t always easy, but she found ways to make do even in countries like Bangladesh and Thailand where there was little Diabetes care. Nothing was going to keep her from hanging out with elephants!

Over the years, she learned a lot about Type 1 diabetes and the impact it had on her travels. And somewhere along the way, it occurred to her that this was valuable information that she could share with others. So, when she and her boyfriend Bradley graduated from University with a four-month backpacking stint to South America on the horizon, they decided that it was time to make a leap.

With less than £500 [$650], they launched a website and called their new project Dream Big, Travel Far. And instead of creating an all-purpose travel blog, they opted to focus on giving others with Type 1 Diabetes the tools they needed to meet their travel goals—without compromising their health.

In between Amazon riverboat cruises and trekking through National Parks, Cazzy and Bradley published their advice on taking medication and syringes through TSA, traveling to high altitudes, and even location-specific “What to do in case of emergencies” guides. The latter of these was especially important because following a night with her sister at a bar in Thailand, Cazzy knew all too well how easy it is for someone to mistake a glucose monitor for a cell phone and walk off with it.

Although slow to grow, their hustle eventually did pay off! They centered themselves as authorities for travelers with Type 1 Diabetes, and Dream Big, Travel Far currently gets more than 100,000 page views per month and brings in about £3,000 (or $3,700 USD) in profit each month as well. It’s even been successful enough for them to quit freelancing entirely and sustain their travels.

This adventurous couple now has lofty goals to triple their blog traffic this year and find new ways to continue growing their incomes. Eventually, they’d love to hire a Virtual Assistant to cover tasks like email and social media so they can focus on what they do best—namely, getting traffic through Google.

Meanwhile, they’re making their way from Ireland to Indonesia. It just goes to show that a diagnosis can’t stop you from dreaming big and traveling far.

Software Engineer Sells 64,000 “Anne of Green Gables” eBooks

What It’s About

Engineer turns a page to a new passive income stream through old titles.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Aaron says that picking which books to publish is ultimately more art than science. It’s difficult to gauge the commercial success of each book you publish since there are many factors involved. It’s more useful to focus on tangible skills such as digital formatting, understanding how publishing platforms work and selling the books with the right message.

Fun Fact

A lot of content exists in the public domain and can be used by anyone. Many books and characters, such as those created by Disney, were originally from the public domain. It’s up to you what you do with this content—if you want, you can start a publishing business just as Aaron did.

Notes from Chris

Episode 906
It’s said that a book is worth reading if it gives you even just one idea that you can use. This has certainly been true for Michigan-based Aaron Kerr, albeit not in the way you might expect. As his wife was reading the popular Anne of Green Gables series to their daughters, she noticed that the Kindle version she was reading from had lots of errors and was poorly formatted.

The family had been buying the Kindle version of each book in the series, and this was a major disappointment. Even though there was little regret, since each book cost just 99 cents, it didn’t make sense that the available copies of such a classic were of such low quality.

Aaron knew he could do better, and he also knew that it was perfectly legal for him to do so. The copyright protection for classics such as Anne of Green Gables would typically have expired if they were old enough. This meant that such books were in the public domain and could be used in any manner.

The first thing that he did was to look on Amazon for another series of Anne of Green Gables. After purchasing a series for just $1.99, he reviewed the pages for typo errors and started to get them formatted properly. With prior experience doing Kindle formatting, this did not pose a serious challenge, although it was time-consuming.

The only actual expense that Aaron incurred was purchasing a high-quality stock photograph for $18, which he used for the book cover. He then uploaded the entire series of books onto Amazon and priced them for just $0.99. In other words, you could spend less than a dollar to download the series, not just one of the books.

To sweeten the deal, he also included in his listing links to free audiobooks which were available on the Librivox project. Anyone looking for Anne of Green Gables would see that this offer stood out.

With this effort, Aaron had went from scratching his own itch to hoping he could earn a few dollars a month. Things went as he expected at first—it sold about 20-30 copies in the next couple of days after he published the series. But the numbers increased exponentially shortly after. There was a day where the number of books sold jumped to 2,100. Then another day where he would wake up to find that he had sold over 7,300 copies.

The Anne of Green Gables series would go on to sell over 65,000 copies in four months and take the #1 spot for Overall Bestselling Book on Kindle, if only for a few minutes.

The success of the series demonstrated to Aaron that public domain publishing could become a viable side business for him. With a background in web development, he knew that he had the necessary skills to continue. Under the brand Timeless Reads, Aaron would go on to publish several other collections.

Moving forward, Aaron advises people to take advantage of digital publishing through Amazon and other platforms. With low barriers to entry and a huge market of ebook readers, lots of people can make money publishing public domain content. This has certainly proved to be true for Aaron, with him averaging $1,400/month in book royalties over six years—and occasionally a lot more during the months when he’s landed a hit.

Much of this income is entirely passive, although Aaron wants to be clear that he’s been successful because he’s continued to put out new titles. Over time, revenue from the older titles tends to dry up. Further putting his knowledge to good use, he now even has his own course on public domain publishing as well.

The best part about this adventure has been Aaron’s ability to combine his passion for publishing with his skill in technology. Having sat through bad copies of the classics, he is now able to produce quality copies of books for families to enjoy. And as a bonus, he’s been able to build a better relationship with his two daughters by reading them many of the books. It’s a timeless—yet modern—example of creative thinking applied to action.

Millennial Invests Side Income For Passive Profits

What It’s About

An ambitious man hustles to create an early-arrival retirement fund.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Notice that nowhere in the story do we focus on his money-saving strategies. Clearly, he had some—it’s hard to save 80% of your income. But when you consider that most of that income over time came from his side hustling earnings, maybe it’s not that hard. If he wasn’t doing all those projects, he would have been like most people in the sense that his salary was his total income.

So one way or another … if you want to achieve financial independence, you need to make more money.

Fun Fact

Grant’s first side hustle, creating a WordPress website, earned him $500. Mere months later, the exact same job earned him $50,000! It goes to show that the perception of the value of a service is often much greater than the actual value.

Notes from Chris

Episode 893
In 2010, Grant Sabatier was in his early twenties and unemployed with a net worth of $2.26. He had a college degree but was going nowhere fast. The fact that he couldn’t even afford a burrito left him feeling helpless and out of control.

He knew something had to change, sooner rather than later.

Disheartened by his minuscule bank balance, he set himself an audacious goal. To save enough money so that he could retire when he wanted to, and never have to worry about money again.

But the first thing to do was find a job. He had to start earning money, at least some. He took a role at a digital marketing agency on a modest salary. At the same time, he started reading books about investing and personal finance. Over the coming months, he devoured so many books that he became somewhat of an armchair expert on all things money.

That knowledge was the ‘ka ching’ he needed to set him on the right path. Grant realized that if he invested every spare dollar he could, then, over time, his nest egg would start producing a profit on its own from the interest generated. He ran the numbers and calculated, if he could save one million dollars—still no small feat—and invested it, he’d earn enough every year to cover all his expenses.

It was ambitious but at least now he had a target, a financial bullseye to aim for!

Soon after, the same math made him realize there was no way he could achieve this goal just by working a day job. Even if he got a raise, it would take him decades to save a million dollars: an unacceptable timeframe. So, Grant began looking for ways to make money outside of his day job. He was about to become a serial side hustler!

He started by looking through Craigslist for opportunities. One stood out more than any others: a law firm willing to pay five hundred dollars for a new website. It seemed like a good bit of money and Grant was interested in learning WordPress—a popular website builder—anyway. He pitched for the job, over delivered on the project, and deposited the money in his savings.

With pockets flush with cash, many millennials would splurge, buy a fancy car, or take an Instagram worthy trip. But not Grant, he stuck to his plan of saving and investing. He poured his excess funds into different investments.

It is one of the best and easiest ways to make compounding work, where the interest your investments make get reinvested into buying more of fund. Eventually, instead of reinvesting the interest, you can withdraw the money to live off.

When you think about it, it makes total cents…

Since Grant was still working a day job, almost all his side hustle income was invested. In fact, he was so dedicated that 80% of everything he earned went straight into his millionaire grand plan!

A year into the journey, he didn’t stop at websites. The thrill of making income on the side was addictive, so Grant looked for more ways to do it. He tried dozens of ideas, including reselling concert tickets, flipping domain names, and freelance writing.

But soon it became increasingly clear that building websites was the most lucrative. The main thing Grant liked about it, was that it wasn’t a direct trade of money for time.

But, now it was 2015. He’d achieved his goal of saving a million dollars and was earning enough after investing that money to cover all of his living expenses …. sooooo, now what? Well, it was time to teach what he knew.

Grant started the Millennial Money blog. It wasn’t intended to be a money maker in the beginning. He was just interested in sharing what he’d learned about financial independence and investing. He wrote, and wrote, and wrote some more.

Over time, the blog began to reach a critical mass. Grant was being featured in media outlets everywhere. He signed a book deal and the profits rolled in, almost by itself. Currently, his blog is earning around $10,000/month from advertising and affiliate commissions.

For now, the Millenial Money blog is Grant’s main focus. It seems side hustlin’ is so much in his nature, that he’ll keep doing it even when he’s retired.
