Pump It Up! Project Manager Elevates Female Fitness

What It’s About

A side hustle that helps transform the lives of other women!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

When asked about standing out in a saturated market Lucy said, “Just because someone else is doing something doesn’t mean that you don’t have something unique and valuable to add to the market. Be so authentic and true to yourself that you end up being different from everything else that’s out there. Just because there are others in the market doesn’t mean that their message is going to resonate with your potential customers.”

Fun Fact

Lucy’s ambassador program Fire Tribe got its name from an inspiring quote that got her through her own transformation: “Some women fear the fire, others become it.” It was a quote she’d post on Instagram. When her followers began quoting it back to her and hashtagging it, she thought it was a perfect fit.

Notes from Chris

Episode 580

27-year-old Lucy Dunne is—by her own account—a free spirit. In her heyday, she spent years partying hard and traveling the world not knowing what the next day held. As an Aussie now living in Alberta, Canada, Lucy found herself working full-time as a lead project manager tasked with providing signage solutions for corporations across North America. Like most jobs, it had its ups and downs.

The job kept her busy, and she was making ends meet. But there was one area of her life that she wanted to improve—her health and fitness. Lucy had acquired a new habit of binge eating, and it didn’t help that she was smoking up to a pack of cigarettes a day. But it wasn’t until she was having trouble fitting into regular sized clothes at retail shops that she knew something had to change.

There’s a lot of noise in the health and fitness space. So instead of looking to all the experts, she decided to do it her own way. She said “so long” to hours spent on the dreaded treadmill and stairclimber machines and introduced weightlifting and other activities that didn’t feel like such a chore to her routines.

Instead of denying herself the things she loved and meticulously counting her calories, she started to adopt an “everything in moderation” mentality and focused on macro ratios more than calories. Over the next three years, trips to the gym and meal times stopped being something she dreaded, and more importantly, she was seeing good results.

By 2015, she was 65 lbs down from her original weight and felt that she could finally stop hiding behind large purses in pictures. Lucy was so proud of what she had accomplished that she decided to document the remainder of her journey on Instagram—and that’s when everything changed.

Each day, Lucy shared a bit more about her journey. Because of the transparency and authenticity of her posts, she began drawing the attention of other women who were looking to improve their health and fitness routines.

At this point, she knew what worked best for herself, but she wanted to get a better idea of what would work for others as well. So, Lucy Dunne decided to get certified as a personal trainer and nutrition coach.

And before she knew it, a new transformation was underway… of the side hustle variety! She called it Dunnebells.

With an avid Instagram following looking for her help, she started with them. Within the first month, she had roughly 20 clients enrolled in each program, and with each month that passed, her programs were selling out faster than she could open them up!

In the beginning, Lucy’s side hustle was earning her $1,000 a month. Gradually, her monthly earnings bumped up to $2,000. By October 2017, she was making $5k a month. Now at $10k+ a month, her side hustle has become her full-time hustle!

Money Grows on Moringa Trees

What It’s About

A side hustle that just goes to show you that money can grow on trees!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Jacquelyn has chosen to market to eager buyers rather than try to convince the reluctant ones. Eager buyers are people who typically are health conscious, go to the gym frequently, shop at Whole Foods, and stay in step with new health trends and superfoods. Reluctant buyers, well, don’t. Jacquelyn even worked on creating an on-the-go Moringa product for them so that they could take FERA Moringa wherever they go.

The lesson here: getting to know your ideal customer is crucial to learning what their needs are. Start there before you do any kind of marketing!

Fun Fact

It’s one thing to get your product on the shelf, it’s another to get people to understand it. A common misunderstanding is that the powder mixes easily with water, so Jacquelyn teaches people to mix it into smoothies, juices, hot drinks and sprinkle it in and on foods. She teaches through conversations, websites, trade shows, grocery store demos, and collaborative events with gyms and workout classes. She also offers step-by-step recipes featuring her powder on her website.

Notes from Chris

Episode 574

If you step inside Jacquelyn Turner-Hauer’s small New York City apartment, you may wonder if you’re in a mini-warehouse. Yes, there’s furniture, but parked around it are boxes of products, packing materials, and trade show banners—a sure sign of a side hustle. Jacquelyn’s roommates are not only understanding, they are often her shipping department.

Don’t be surprised if Jacquelyn isn’t there, though. She’s either out doing store demos, meeting with collaborators, or over on Wall Street working her day job at a hedge fund.

Her passion keeps pushing her through. She is driven to get her side hustle, FERA Moringa, into your hands because that’s what turned her from being a very sick person into an extremely healthy one.

Jaquelyn is 25 now, but at age 15 she was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease, a chronic, inflammatory condition that requires constant treatment. Her body was being weakened not only by the disease but by the heavy medications she had to take.

Her mom wanted a different outcome, so she went looking for alternatives. She found evidence that the leaves of the Moringa tree contained remarkable anti-inflammatory and iron-boosting properties—two of the most disabling factors in Crohn’s—and so she planted one in her Florida garden. The Moringa tree is native to India, commonly known as the drumstick or horseradish tree, but is cultivated around the world. Its leaves are rich in minerals and vitamins. Extracts from the leaves are an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. They’re used to treat malnutrition and increase breast milk in lactating mothers.

Jacquelyn’s mom began adding the leaves to her food, making Moringa tea and sprinkling the leaves on salads and in soups, about 1 – 2 teaspoons a day. With the zeal of a mom on a mission to heal her child, she even learned how to make Moringa powder. Within a short period of time, Jacquelyn’s condition began to show improvement. Before long, she was even off steroids and the anti-inflammation meds that she had previously so desperately relied on. And best of all—her tests and screenings showed zero inflammation.

Suddenly, Jacquelyn was doing well and her future was bright.

At 22, healthy and energized, it occurred to Jacquelyn that this wunder-supplement may be just the answer that so many like her were searching for. Being a creative and curious person by nature, Jacquelyn began to brainstorm how she could offer an alternative to others who were struggling. And that’s when she figured that perhaps it was time for a new passion project.

So far, FERA Moringa is bringing in around $2,000 a month with a 40% profit margin, and those numbers have been steadily growing the longer she’s in business. She’s building this money tree with the long-term in mind. Since starting the business, she’s seen a huge difference in herself. It’s improved her ability to manage her time and make decisions quickly.

Money grows on trees; you just need to find the right tree.

Accountant Generates $10,000/Month In Sweat Equity

What It’s About

A side hustle that’s no sweat!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Rebecca suggests working with a reputable chemist if you want to get a beauty or skincare product off the ground. They’ll help you with fine-tuning your formula, making sure you’re FDA compliant and have product testing done. Having a chemist is a one-time investment but might save you the additional costs from trial and error.

Fun Fact

Everyone needs a deodorant that works, but Rebecca was on the hunt for one that also doesn’t leave any residue. At one particular CPA networking event, she went over to give a friend a hug. She was wearing a sleeveless dress at the time and left an armpit print on his black suit. She was mortified! That’s when she became gung-ho about creating a deodorant that works AND doesn’t leave any residue.

Notes from Chris

Episode 566

Rebecca So struggled her entire adult life looking for a deodorant that worked. Her dream was to find a product that didn’t just help with body odor, but also left no residue or white marks. Her hunt for this elusive product came to a head one day at a networking event for her industry.

Rebecca is a CPA at a firm in Los Angeles. Accounting is traditionally a corporate industry where everyone dresses in professional clothing. At the event, she bumped into a good friend of hers and gave him a big hug. She was wearing a sleeveless dress at the time and, when she let go, was mortified! She’d left a white armpit stain on his expensive black suit. It was an embarrassing and emotionally taxing moment.

That was the day she’s had enough. She knew there must be deodorant out there that solved this problem. She tried everything she could find. Even resorting to aluminum-based deodorants that would leave her underarms stinging for hours. On the odd occasion where she found a product that worked, it would stop doing so after a few weeks of use.

She was fed up! With nothing available on the market, Rebecca decided to work up a sweat creating her own deodorant brand. She knew she already had one customer, herself!

What perspired from that initial thought became SWAY Detox Deodorant. Her very first side hustle!

She experimented with a range of natural products over her kitchen sink. However, it wasn’t until a small adult acne breakout that she had her eureka moment. It came in the form of apple cider vinegar!

Using vinegar to treat acne is a well known natural remedy. One day while applying some to her face, she thought, “why not splash a little on my underarms too.” To her surprise, it actually worked. No odor and no unsightly white marks under her arms. She’d accidentally stumbled onto the main ingredient for her deodorant brand.

From humble beginnings in her kitchen sink just 7 months ago to a successful business. SWAY Detox Deodorant is now generating 10K/month in sales. While that sounds like a lot, Rebecca is still working for sweat equity at the moment. Every extra dollar has been put back into the business to build the brand and help the product grow.

With all that money coming in, it’s a good thing Rebecca knows a good accountant… that would be… herself!

Personal Trainer Pumps Up Breakfast with $25,000/Month Pancake Hustle

What It’s About

Pancakes that put the “pro” in “protein.”

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Ashley’s pancakes, fluffy and delicious though they were, would not have been able to sustain the momentum they had without her social media strategy, which included Facebook ads, Instagram hashtags, cross-promotions, contents, and influencers that help grow ABS Pancakes. Ashley found that reaching out to like-minded companies and asking to work on collaborations together was the best way to grow her audience and reach new customers.

Fun Fact

Protein is a major player and is the most plentiful substance in the human body after water. There are lots of different protein sources, like meat, eggs, nuts, vegetables, and… crickets? Yeah, seriously. Cricket flour has 5 times the protein of a serving of steak!

Notes from Chris

Episode 541

Healthy eating isn’t exactly sugar, spice, and everything nice. It’s kale, quinoa, and protein pancakes, too! At least that’s what Ashley Drummond, a personal trainer from Tampa, Florida, believes.

The full-time personal trainer spends her days hitting the ground, running—from client sessions to the gym for her own training, to more clients, to the grocery store, and back again, all while needing to stay on top of her food intake at the same time. For a lesser human, it would be absolutely exhausting, but breakfast, the notorious “meal of champions,” was her starting point…and in more ways than one, it was her best-kept secret!

Prior to launching the side hustle that is now a full-time business, Ashley spent the last seven years whipping people into tip-top shape as a personal trainer. She had always had a passion for helping people feel better about themselves as they reach their fitness goals, but she still felt a pull to add something else to her life. Something bigger. And something that would allow her to have a little more free time too…

But Ashley, a self-proclaimed foodie, just didn’t know where to start.

Now, something you should know about Ashley is that she firmly believes that you should be able to eat the foods you want every day without it having to be a “cheat meal.” And one of the things that she craved on a regular basis was pancakes. But the mixes available out there were full of less than fantastic ingredients, so she made her own version that was high protein, low carb, and incredibly tasty. She even bragged that she got her abs eating pancakes!

As she made her usual breakfast of protein pancakes one morning in 2014, she started to think about how she could combine her goals in the form of a side hustle. As she folded some chocolate chips into her pancake batter, she thought more about how to help people reach their fitness goals, without actually having to personally train them in the process.

With a steaming stack of pancakes on her plate, an idea suddenly popped into her head—the solution was right in front of her the whole time!

Protein pancake mix could be packaged, sold online, and made at home by other people. It was an easy way for Ashley to help others reach their goals without having to be in the gym with them. Of course, a few details would need to be whipped out, but it felt like a weight had been lifted. Ashley’s side hustle was quite literally in the pan!

In the four years since she began ABS Pancakes, Ashley’s been able to build a side hustle that brings in around $25,000 each month. That’s a lot of flapjacks!! She did require a heavy investment of $20,000 to produce her first run of inventory through her co-packer and build her Shopify website, but she was able to pay for that by saving her profits from the initial year of sales from her kitchen-made products, and a bit of credit card investment, too.

Looking back, Ashley says that her side hustle would have fallen flat had she not trusted her instincts. In her words, “in the end, only you know what’s best for your brand, so it’s important to take other people’s advice with a grain of salt… even if they’re successful entrepreneurs.” Above all, Ashley says that it’s the daily things she does that keep her moving forward. The small details, like invoicing, making phone calls, website maintenance, and regular social posts might feel boring sometimes, but like the grams of protein in her pancakes, each step adds up.

MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:

  • ABS Pancakes: Get your abs eating pancakes—snag a bag (or two, or three…) of protein packed pancake mix over on Ashley’s website!
  • Shopify: Ashley used Shopify to set up her store for ABS Pancakes, and they’re offering a 21-day trial and exclusive discount for all Side Hustle School listeners!
  • ReCharge: The subscription platform that Ashley used to help manage ongoing customer subscriptions

Natural Deodorant That Actually Works Brings In $5,500/Month

What It’s About

A Side Hustle School listener pads her pocketbook and comes out smelling like a rose!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Sarah’s first product run was a great opportunity for her to get feedback from friends and, more importantly, complete strangers. She used all the feedback they gave, especially the constructive bits, and continued to iterate on the product until she landed on the final scent and formula that she sells today. As Sarah told us, “this was a crucial step since up until that point, I was the only one using it. I am a sweaty chick and very active so I’m a good test subject, but deodorant is a product that works differently for everyone, so I needed to bring others into the process.”

Fun Fact

Everyone’s body odor is unique and one-of-a-kind, almost like a fingerprint! Everyone’s scent depends on different factors, like diet, DNA, and stress levels. Each person’s smell is a reflection of what they eat and is part of an ancient communication system with fellow humans and animals.

Notes from Chris

Episode 509

You know the saying, “if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself”? That saying can apply to so many things, even, as Sarah Moret found out, natural deodorant.

Sarah is currently the head of business development for a biotechnology company, but she had previously worked in venture capital for five years. During those years, she saw tons of seed-stage companies (the ones just starting out) trying to raise money and give away 30% of their company’s equity just for a chance at funding.

But, as an investor, she knew that a lot of businesses don’t need $1M in venture capital funding to get started. They just need some cash and a day job to keep them going until their business starts earning money.

During this time, Sarah was also on the hunt for a natural deodorant that didn’t have harmful chemicals, parabens, and aluminum, but nothing seemed to work for her. She was frustrated by the lack of options, especially after she had tested just about all of them. Sarah decided to do what any Pinterest-crazed millennial would do. She decided to try making her own, and she called it Curie.

Sarah gathered recipes from the internet, stocked up on ingredients, and turned her kitchen into ground zero. She spent 10 months working on the formula, and asking everyone around to “smell me, please?” But, at long last, she had cracked the code. It’s a little citrusy, contains a hint of floral, and a lot of freshness.

Sarah officially launched Curie in April after testing her product for a few months and doing a limited production run of 50 units in December. Once she sold out of the initial product run, which she sold to her friends, family, friends of friends, and even a few Instagram followers, she took their feedback and used it to finalize her formula.

Everything from the consistency and scent of it to the amount of baking soda it contained (a concern for those with sensitive skin) was carefully noted and used to create something that would truly sweat equity.

It turns out that she had all the right ingredients in her side hustle for success. In her first week, Sarah brought in $1,500 from sales of her natural deodorant, and her profit for the month of April came out to around $5,500!

Sarah has come a long way since testing deodorant formulas in her kitchen and making her friends and family smell her after a workout. While she couldn’t share more about it just yet, Curie’s future looks bright (and lightly scented). We think she’s off to a scent-sational start!

Car Crash Leads To Pain Relief Side Hustle

What It’s About

An innovative service that connects physical therapists and people with busy schedules.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Paging Patch has used lots of content and email marketing to help grow their following. And they’ve been featured on many industry websites like Shape and Huffington Post Health. These have been short excerpts and quotes that link back to their website. You can achieve similar results in your side hustle by using Help-A-Reporter-Out (HARO), where you can provide quotes and insights for journalists.

Fun Fact

Physical therapy is proven to be one of the most effective, least invasive, and least costly ways to get care for pain and injury. Yet only 10% of people suffering actually use physical therapy as a care option.

Notes from Chris

Episode 503

Rachel Sanders’ life was changed forever by a car crash. The accident happened while she was a full-time business school student, and afterward, she was left with persistent neck and back pain. During the months following her injury, she visited what felt like hundreds of doctors to try and cure the pain. But the diagnosis was always the same—it was chronic.

The only relief she found was through acupuncture and physical therapy. The sessions she undertook helped relieve many of the symptoms and made her studies much more bearable.

But, like so many students, Rachel’s schedule was pretty busy. There were essays to write, classes to attend, and events to host—leaving little time to spend on self-care. Most of the clinics she needed to visit for her treatment were only open when she was working or in class, and it was hard to get appointments for after-hours care.

Rachel began to look for solutions. Instead of going to the therapist, she’d bring the therapist to her. And she began to book appointments, at a time that suited her, in the comfort of her own home.

This piqued her entrepreneurial interest. Rachel realized that there is no shortage of busy people who struggle to find the time for self-care around their work!

She saw this as a business opportunity and a way to help people she could empathize with. She’d learned a lot in her studies about how much people love convenience. Meanwhile, health care was still an inconvenient industry, despite the amount of money people pay in insurance over the course of their lives.

This led to an idea that Rachel called Paging Patch. She wanted to connect people with injuries or medical problems to physical therapists who would travel to them. The name came from the idea of “paging” a doctor, and the way a doctor can “patch” you up.

This allows suffering patients to get personalized care and work with a therapist they can trust. But this system doesn’t just help the patients, it also helps the therapists.

Since its conception on October 2017, Paging Patch has worked with around 60 therapists to treat over 100 patients, and they’ve seen numbers double each month. Some of their therapists have been able to earn $1,000 a month or more by being registered on the platform.

Hollywood Film Editor Optimizes Life Through Self-Care Side Hustle

What It’s About

A Hollywood film and tv editor helps those in the industry strike a healthy work/life balance.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

According to Zack, the first step is understanding the reason why you would start a side hustle in the first place. There are plenty of ways to earn money online now, but some of them aren’t rewarding. Knowing why you want to build a business and who you specifically want to help are key. Otherwise, it can be difficult to overcome the drudgery of what you’re doing when you hit walls, have glitches, have failed launches, etc.

The bigger picture and the greater ‘Why’ is the engine that will drive everything.

Fun Fact

On average, Zack spends about 20 hours a week on Optimize Yourself. His work schedule changes often, so his time commitment shifts. But he’s built in a lot of automated systems over time. When he’s not busy with editing TV shows, he stocks up on podcast interviews. It took Zack a while to learn the lesson that he needed to delegate. Once he learned how to teach it to someone else, he did. Zack would spend weeks doing it by himself, only to realize someone can do it better and faster.

Notes from Chris

Episode 501

Is a work/life balance even a real thing? Zack Arnold, a successful Hollywood film and TV editor, doesn’t subscribe to the idea…at least not as it’s commonly known. Even though he was working on shows like Glee, Empire, Unsolved and others, his days were spent sitting in dark editing bays and then rushing home to be with his family at night. Trying (like many of us do) to divide and compartmentalize his days, he realized something.

Even though he may have been spending 50% of his days at work and 50% at home, he felt scattered, unhealthy, and unhappy.

One spring day, he decided enough was enough. He started an email chain he coined “Fitness in Post” with his fellow film/TV editors to get his friends together to do fitness-focused activities like hiking. In the beginning, it was more about starting a club than a business.

His initial email blast was with friends, but more people wanted to join, including a lot of people he didn’t know. So he decided to sign up for a MailChimp account to help manage it. With very little effort, he found an audience of more than 500 people. He realized he was on to something.

One of Zack’s friends wanted him to come on his podcast and talk about the clear need in the film industry for a better way to balance work, life, and wellness. Inspired by a suggestion from that same friend, Zack decided to start his own “Fitness in Post” podcast. At first, he thought it would be two to three episodes, something short-lived. Another surprise: The podcast caught on just like the email list. A lot of people in the industry really wanted to talk about how to make working conditions better.

Zack was inspired to make it his mission to push forward the conversation. At conferences and events, people started asking him about his podcast vs. his full-time job. Another push to charge ahead.

His friends were his first fans of the group and the podcast—really the catalyst to help to build his business.

And one day, a friend said something to Zack at a conference that really changed his whole outlook. He asked how he was going to monetize his side hustle. This friend said “If you don’t have a plan to monetize it, anything that takes this amount of time and dedication, you’ll have to give up in two years. It’s going to be too much.”

That advice shifted the way Zack thought about Fitness in Post, realizing that his audience would want him to continue creating. He got over the initial hesitation about asking for money, and that’s when he started to research different podcasts and sites. After a little rebranding, he created some online teaching tools and grew more and more excited as he considered the possibilities for his new side hustle, Optimize Yourself.

Last year, he added coaching to his side hustle skills. As he created courses, he wanted a place to test and try his methods. Coaching was the perfect way to help others and to hear first-hand their needs. This helped Zack cater his courses to help people with all different types of goals.

For the coaching, he offers a 12-week program, one hour a week, for $2,500. He has two to three students at a time, working with them one-on-one, setting goals and take actions. He’s coached six people so far, bringing in profits around $15,000.

Today, Zack’s side hustle monthly income varies depending on if he does a product launch or not, but in general, he brings in around $2,000 per month which is largely passive with the exception of two hours of coaching per week. His email list now has over 4,000 people, and he’s still generating profits through the online courses and coaching. His priority is to launch new products with two courses in the works. He’s spent zero money on Facebook or Google ads throughout all of this. All of his audience growth has been organic through podcast listeners, the free guide on his website and his courses. It really proves great content can make your side hustle a box office hit.

23-Year-Old College Student Uses “Sweatcoin” App to Earn $2,000/Month

What It’s About

After finding success on his own, a student in the U.K. launches a side hustle as a fitness coach showing his tried and true methods to others.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

If you’re looking to start a side hustle as a fitness coach, you will want to start by making sure that you know what you’re doing. Sometimes it’s helpful when you’re first getting started out by offering your services for free before you start charging. If you learn first, you most definitely will earn later.

Fun Fact

Oliver’s strategy has been based on giving. He was the first to give away a free training program on the popular health and fitness app, Sweatcoin. He also regularly gives free information and content on his Instagram page. He has never asked for anything, but he has received more than his fair share in return.

Notes from Chris

Episode 479

After making several mistakes working out in the gym, 23-year-old Oliver Anwar realized that the training plans provided by professional fitness competitors were unsuited for the average person. He would train in the gym with high reps and low weights but found that he wasn’t building enough muscle.

The mediocre results were discouraging, but they forced Oliver to conduct his own research and learn more about the science behind nutrition and training. Oliver saw better results in the next year than he ever did in the past three chasing fads. This led him to realized that even though the fitness and nutrition world was crowded, he had something unique to offer—after all, he had proven that his plans worked.

With the encouragement of some friends, Oliver decided to start an online fitness coaching business and called it Ro Anwar Fitness.

Considering that Oliver’s startup costs were just web hosting and a website theme which set him back by only $100, it’s an understatement to say that Oliver has made his investment back several times over. Today, Oliver makes up to $2,000/month, which is a comfortable amount for a university student. He’s also been featured by his university for his entrepreneurship and has managed to land public speaking gigs. The side hustle has also helped him land a part-time job at a startup.

There’s no doubt that the skills he’s building are valuable, and so are the 17 pounds of muscle and the $2,000 a month.

It paid off almost right away. Within two hours of launching his website using Shopify, Oliver received a Paypal email notifying him that someone had bought one of his coaching packages. He hadn’t done any marketing or promotion at that point in time, but only shared his website on social media, so this was a true shocker. Oliver recalls that he was so overcome with joy that he rushed downstairs immediately to tell his Mom about his first sale. This moment of validation told Oliver that his business could actually work.

Oliver never stopped working on his business after that. Besides offering coaching, he also published a range of meal plans. Due to his bad experience following generic plans previously, Oliver decided that he would offer only personalized plans. This was something that most trainers were unwilling to do since it didn’t necessarily scale well. But to Oliver, this was a chance to stand out in that crowded health and fitness niche.

Today, Oliver makes up to $2,000/month, which is a comfortable amount for a university student. He’s also been featured by his university for his entrepreneurship and has managed to land public speaking gigs. The side hustle has also helped him land a part-time job at a startup.

Exercise App Encourages Fitness While Helping Sick Kids

What It’s About

Forget the expensive trainer—here’s an app that will help you hold yourself accountable!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

If you’re looking to start a side hustle involving an app, Justin and his brother recommend that you try and build an initial version yourself so that you can prove the concept before investing more for a more polished version. As he says, there is a lot you can learn from the initial version that will enable you to make precise improvements on the polished version.

Fun Fact

Asked if he’d thought about using a reverse incentive for Lazy Jar, where users have to pay some organization they disagree with if they don’t make their workouts, Justin said, “Yes, and we refused to do that. We felt that there was nothing to gain by donating money to organizations we generally don’t believe in, even if it was as a form of negative reinforcement. We prefer knowing that even when the user fails, some good comes from it.”

Notes from Chris

Episode 465

Our resolutions to get fit sometimes fizzle. Those twice-weekly trips to the gym can slow to twice-monthly slogs. For some people, they turn into an occasional walk to the corner store for beer. In North Carolina, Justin Anyanwu saw that the shine of his successive new routines—yoga, kickboxing, CrossFit—started out well, but fell away when he couldn’t maintain his commitment to the workouts.

The initial weight loss he achieved didn’t inspire him enough to establish an unbreakable fitness habit. He knew that the problem wasn’t the workouts themselves, but his lack of consistency in committing to them regularly. Multiple canceled gym memberships frustrated him to act: he designed an app to hold himself—and later others—accountable.

Justin is a full-time software engineer, so he knows that technology can solve problems. His Lazy Jar app comes out swinging: Miss your weekly fitness goals and you’ll lose weight—in your wallet. Lazy Jar works by tracking a user’s steps, calories, miles, and minutes of physical activity via a Fitbit device. Users set a weekly goal for those metrics and a financial penalty they must pay if they fail to meet the goals.

He and his business-partner brother sped up the initial work on the look and feel of the app by using a pre-made app theme from UI8, a design platform. Then he found a developer on Fiverr to code the program, which cost him a bit more than five dollars: $7,000, to be precise.

Since the app was launched publicly in October of last year, the company has been making $500 a month from users who head back to the couch rather than the exercise bike. Their user base has been growing with further publicity, like the boost given from being mentioned on places like TechCrunch, LifeHacker and Product Hunt.

Learning about how the human psyche processes interest and desire has been one of the product’s side benefits for Justin. He’s seen how it takes a fair amount of social proof from other user’s experiences to bring new people into the Lazy Jar fold. New, unusual ideas get resistance, but influencers can sway a skeptical audience.

So, the big question: is Justin missing his workouts? Has the app worked for him, or has he programmed in a cheat code? We’re not certain how much Justin is paying back to Lazy Jar these days from missing his regular workouts, but according to him, he’s feeling stronger and healthier than ever.

  • Fiverr: The freelancing platform that Justin used to find the developer to make Lazy Jar a reality
  • UI8: The design platform that Justin found a pre-made app theme from
  • Ionic & React Native: Two of the app design platforms that Justin would likely use the next time he builds an app
  • TechCrunch, LifeHacker, & Product Hunt: Three of the tech-related media outlets that did write ups on Lazy Jar and brought it more exposure

California Moms Get High and Get Well

What It’s About

Two moms tackle the cannabis industry with their “feel good” products.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

No matter your stance on the legalization of cannabis, wherever there is a fast-growing industry like this, there are often ways to profit from it. Keep your eyes open for fast growing industries you can jump on board with!

Fun Fact

The Cordial Organics team are always excited to find new uses for their products. One friend put their lip balm on her bug bite and it went away in just a few hours!

Notes from Chris

Episode 434

In late 2016, Shelly Phegley and Desi Mckinnon predicted a change in California’s political landscape that would open up a whole new world of side hustles. The state was about to vote on cannabis laws which would eventually lead to legal recreational use of marijuana.

It was then that Shelly and Desi noticed a group of people was being highly underserved. At one end of the spectrum, people were marketing marijuana-based products and campaigning for votes from what you might call the “stoner” crowd. And at the other end, the products were being targeted to the medical industry, which, to them, felt a little sterile.

There was an entire group of people, including Moms like Shelly and Desi, who could benefit from the use of the herb but weren’t being included in the conversation. They wanted to use marijuana and its extracts for its everyday benefits—not to cure illness or bring on a sudden craving for Doritos. So, the pair decided they’d create the products they’d like to see in the market.

They invested some cash into their own plants and began to extract the THC—Tetrahydrocannabinol—to make their own tinctures under the banner, Cordial Organics.

These were drops and balms and oils that came with natural health benefits. They then shared their product with people through their network to see if they had a market. The response was positive, especially from other moms, so they decided to proceed.

Shelly and Desi have lots of success stories from their side hustle. They’ve received countless letters from people who’ve seen the benefits. But their favorite, by far, is the thank you note they received from someone who had used their products to successfully manage the side effects from chemotherapy.

Setting up a business like this doesn’t come cheaply, though. Despite generating income of up to $7,000 per month, profit margins are still low. But, thanks to their marketing efforts, they’re expecting that to change in the next few months. This joint operation is not just blowing smoke… it’s high time they got their reward.
