When Brittia Kubeczka was preparing to give birth, she knew she’d be bringing something new and joyful and full of life into the world. But little did she know that her pregnancy, and the few weeks post-partum, would also lead to bringing a new side hustle into the world.

The real challenge for Brittia was marketing the business and bringing it in front of the people who needed her help. There were a few false starts, and she found boosting posts on Facebook to be a waste of time. However she really hit her groove when she began going through social media and connecting with entrepreneurs, and her target women, one-by-one where they hang out online. This could be anywhere from Facebook groups, to forums, to blog comments and online communities.

So far Brittia has managed to generate around $8,000 in sales through her coaching and her products and has expanded her product range to also include affirmation cards in different packages. Whilst this still leaves her a little in the red with her start up costs, her new product launch is predicted to increase her income to $2,500 per month and eclipse those initial fees.

You might think that you would need a lot of skill and credibility to be an instructor on Udemy, but Teresa proved that’s not the case when she started without any form of certification. There are instructors with celebrity chef credentials on the site, but search ‘baking’ on Udemy and you will see all of Teresa’s courses appear on the first page of the results shown. It goes to show that passion, hard work, and smart marketing can go a long way.

Fun Fact

In publishing circles, it’s said that the best form of marketing for your book is to write another one. That’s what Teresa did for her courses. She continued to create 10 more Udemy: courses over the next two years. The result? She did over $86,000 in revenue in 2016 and is on track to top that this year.

Along the way, her following grew as well. She now has a following of 50,000 spread over her social media accounts, with another 4,000 people on her mailing list. It’s a rock solid foundation for expanding her hustle and scaling it if she wishes.

Here’s a true rags-to-riches story that has nothing to do with making an app. How does a woman go from living in poverty, leaving an abusive relationship, cleaning motels… into an online teaching business that made $86,000 last year?

She did this not by teaching about digital marketing or building websites or anything like that. She has established independence and truly created an all-new life for herself on the trendy topic of baking sourdough bread.

Teresa Greenway has always loved baking. It all began in 2004 when one of her daughters decided to try and bake authentic sourdough bread. The daughter gave up after a month of trying, but not before leaving a remark: “No one can make real sourdough bread, Mom, NOT EVEN YOU!”

Famous last words. There’s nothing quite as motivating as someone telling you can’t do something. Teresa would go on to research and try her hand at baking sourdough from then on. Unknowingly, the work she put in paid off years later as she was able to monetize her expertise.

She took a couple of courses on the online learning platform Udemy, which gave her all the information she needed to start her side hustle. The courses were diverse, ranging from YouTube channel management and SEO to photography and video editing, but all of these were skills Teresa felt would be valuable in helping her run her side hustle. They cost $10 each at a discounted price, and for her, it was an investment.

This was when she got the idea to create her own course… she had just the topic: baking sourdough bread. She already had a website on how to make real sourdough, along with a small following in her niche. Teresa knew there was a market for online courses–after all she had just purchased a few of her own accord. Perhaps it would be possible to create her own and get others to buy it.

The first month, she made a thousand dollars in revenue, which encouraged her. By the end of the year, she netted over $28K in revenue from her website and courses.

Man Consults for Crowdfunding Campaigns After Successfully Raising $4 Million

Not sure when to launch your crowdfunding campaign? One of Derek’s tips mentioned in the episode is his ’40-72 Rule’ which states that your campaign is ready to launch when you can fund at least 40% of your whole goal within 72 hours using only your email list. Raising money that fast positions your campaign to catch the eye of Kickstarter staff, and there’s no better way to catch the eye of Kickstarter than having a project that funds extremely fast with an actively engaged audience from day one. After all, campaign velocity begets more campaign velocity.

Derek has successfully raised over $4 million on Kickstarter through the Cyanide & Happiness Show and Joking Hazard campaigns. For his book, he interviewed creators of successful campaigns that combined raised over $30 million.

Episode 220

In 2013 Derek Miller successfully crowdfunded more than $750k for his day job—The Cyanide & Happiness, a show with over 7 million YouTube subscribers. As successful as that campaign was, he made a number of silly mistakes that cost him money. It was then that he first had the idea to put everything he did and everything he learned into a book that could help others with their crowdfunding campaign. But the idea died for a couple years, even though people would ask him for advice and he did some light consulting on a couple campaigns.

The idea came back around in 2016 when he helped raise $3.2 million in a crowdfunding campaign for a card game called Joking Hazard. Again people started asking for his help so Derek pushed himself to start putting all of his ideas down on paper into a book.

As he started writing his ideas down, he realized he needed more stories and examples than just his own. So he started cold-emailing his network to see who was interested in being interviewed for his book. During this process that he kept running into people that needed help on their campaigns, and saw the need for crowdfunding consulting, but didn’t really realize it was a thing. Before he knew it, he was well on his way to a successful consulting side hustle!

At this point, he’s brought in nearly $10,000 in 2017 and is expecting another $20,000 from various campaigns by the end of the year. He’s also working on a video course and paid workshops — so that he can scale up, beyond one-to-one consulting.

She spent the better part of a year going to various experts, specialists, and both traditional and non-traditional practitioners to try to find a solution, but it wasn’t until she found an herbalist that she was able to figure out what was happening and work to improve her health.

Episode 215

By day, Lisa Akers is a rocket scientist—often traveling from her home to build spaceships, most commonly at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Her side hustle is herbalism, specifically working with private clients suffering from autoimmune diseases.

At first, Lisa wanted this project to be her main gig. She hired coaches, found mentors, and took classes, all in hopes of quitting her day job and following her herbal dream. But she was making those decisions while recovering from serious illnesses and wasn’t in a great frame of mind to see how she could change her workflow at her day job to fit with her health and wellness needs. After starting down this frustrating path, she realized she could both keep her day job and have an herbal business. This is the Side Hustle School way!

Lisa’s first sale was a group program—and it completely sold out.

She now prefers one-on-one consults, where she can customize suggestions for individuals, so she focuses on those. She charges $450 for an initial appointment package and $250 for follow-ups.

Her work in building spaceships ebbs and flows—sometimes she’s busy with assembly and testing, and other times, she’s not. She schedules appointments when she’s got time and mental capacity, and starts a waiting list when necessary in order to avoid over committing.

While she’s helping spaceships take flight, she’s also helping people get well and building an asset for herself.

Today’s story comes from Savanna Perry in Augusta, Georgia. By day, she’s a physician assistant in the field of dermatology, helping around 30 patients a day with skin conditions. Her side hustle is The PA Platform, a website that’s a resource for those interested in becoming PAs themselves. In addition to free blog content, Savanna offers mock interviews, personalized assessments for aspiring students and a review of applications.

Savanna started the site to fit a need—when she was a student, she couldn’t always find the information she was looking for about her future job, so once she graduated, she decided to provide it to others. She’d already done a ton of researching using every possible resource when applying for school, so it was relatively easy to take the knowledge she’d gained to help others.

Savanna worked hard on getting content on her site to improve her SEO and rank high in Google. She shares her weekly blog posts on different platforms such as Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, and Reddit and does monthly webinars on YouTube. She’s also made connections with other bloggers and PAs who are on social media and has grown her site to 20,000 monthly visitors without any paid ads.

In her first year, Savanna made about $4,000, minus the cost of the website ($200). She tripled that in the following 10 months, and her costs were only $700 for her email and scheduling software.

Psychologist Earns $74,000 Helping Students Make the Cut

A clinical research psychologist launches a side hustle helping students get into their top choice universities.

Though Shirag knew very little about running a business, he didn’t let that stop him. He dove straight into reading books and online articles about everything from business structure to sales and workflow. He also signed up for a course called Zero to Launch to learn how to grow an online business.

Fun Fact

Shirag offers advising and application services to prospective college students and graduate and medical school students, which can cost anywhere from $300 to $7,000, depending on the student’s plan of choice. Though he had no experience running a business, he’s been able to carve a niche in this competitive arena by offering free live speaking engagements to schools and community organizations, guest posting, and writing articles on his own blog.

Episode 133

Growing up, Shirag Shemmassian did not have it easy. Around the age of 8, he started exhibiting the symptoms of Tourette syndrome, and leading up to being formally diagnosed, Shirag was mocked by his peers. This teasing, however, was not as tough for him as the lack of understanding and acceptance he experienced as a result of his condition—from his peers, as well as from his own Armenian family.

Though at the time Shirag didn’t fully understand the effects the condition would have on his life, he knew it would significantly shape his future goals. And it did.

Despite the early challenges, Shirag went on to achieve significant success: he studied human development at Cornell and attained a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from UCLA. He was also able to graduate from both schools completely debt free. Now, he works as a clinical research psychologist, developing tests used to assess children for mental health conditions.

Out of this success, his side hustle developed organically. About nine years ago, his friends and family starting noticing his track record of getting accepted to and receiving funding from great schools, so they began to ask him for help with their own applications. He obliged, assisting them free of charge.

Then, those he had helped achieved similar results of getting into their dream schools, and they started telling others, who also requested Shirag’s services. With more and more people knocking at his door, Shirag eventually decided to make the side hustle official—launching Shemmassian Academic Consulting in 2013.

So far, Shirag and his team have supported more than 200 students through 1-on-1 support and online courses, and he’s earning around $74,000 annually on the side. And their track record is impressive. For college, 90% of students have gotten into at least one of their top three colleges, and for med school, over 90% have gotten into at least one US medical school. Talk about acing it!

When she first started, McKenna offered some free yoga classes advertised through her website, email list, social media, and some bits of press a friend with a small PR company helped her acquire. This allowed her to get experience and feedback from users so that she could fine-tune her service to suit the needs of her customers.

Fun Fact

While doing some keyword research, McKenna found out that “mobile yoga in Los Angeles” was a common search term for companies looking to have yoga at the office, and this was the basis for her mobile yoga studio. She built up the SEO for her website, Chakra 5, and incubated the brand online by publishing strong content on her blog.

After teaching a virtual workshop for her friend, Michelle realized that she could do something similar under her own name. In 2016, she launched a series of virtual workshops as well as a self-led course that people can go through at their own pace.

That was the point she realized that this was something she could do full-time because the self-led courses are scalable—she made the course once and can continue to market it—and the virtual workshops can take taken by anyone around the world.

Michelle had another side hustle selling dog bandanas that she designed and marketed. She sold via etsy, got into some retail stores and also sold at some craft fairs in Los Angeles.

She realized it was time to stop that side hustle when instead of talking to people at the craft fairs about the dog products, she was talking to people about Pushing Beauty, her new website.

What does it mean to be authentic? In the most general sense, it means to not be false and do no harm, but then, beyond that, it also means something more positive…to tell your story.

Before her side hustle turned into her main job, Michelle D’Avella was working as a graphic designer in Los Angeles by day and writing on her website, Pushing Beauty, on the side. It started organically toward the end of 2012, and she began by writing about what felt most important to her.

She didn’t do much research as to what would do well or get the most traffic to the website that she created; she just surrendered to the process, trusted her intuition and wrote. Her intuition led her to start by write about things she was curious about and things she’s learned along the way that have shaped her life.

Michelle described it by saying, “It felt like it was something I had to do. It was more about satisfying this deep longing to express something, rather than creating an idea in my head.”

Three years later, Michelle is now bringing in around $80,000 annually and has been able to quit her day job in order to dedicate herself to Pushing Beauty and the power of breathwork full-time. This work feels more fulfilling and authentic to Michelle, and it all started because she felt the need to express herself and share her journey with others.

Episode 105

Jonathan Pritchard has multiple hustles that make up his income. While most of his side hustles evolved from his previous career as a graphic designer, in today’s episode we we zeroed in on his most intriguing business—mind reading.

Jonathan has always been fascinated by how and why people think the way they do. As a shy kid, this manifested itself by learning how to do magic tricks and juggle fire so that he could come out of his shell and interact with people through these tricks. This skill set naturally grew and evolved over the years as he performed at dorm parties, restaurants and open mic nights.

While his show kept getting better, the actual business wasn’t growing. When he was offered the chance to tour with another guy doing shows at colleges, he leapt at the chance, so he could learn more about the business side of things.

As he went, he began to notice a trend in what the audiences really responded to, so his services evolved to cater to that which helped him go from earning around $2,000/show to upwards of $3,500 and higher. By turning his show into a learning experience instead of focusing on the magic portion of it, he was able to really distinguish himself from the crowd.

Knowing what your audience wants and making sure to deliver it with as much quality as possible can really be the key to upgrading your service or product. After all, it’s more about what they want and less about what you do.

After the website and finances were taken care of, they needed a logo. So Leif launched a competition on 99 Designs, which led to the creation of the logo he used for their website, a custom stamp for gift certificates as well as the wooden sign they had made for their front yard.

They also set-up a “Pilates-a-thon” fundraiser for a local school that turned out to be a great event for the community and a source of new clients. Leif says he’s amazed how effective word of mouth marketing is. He’d always heard business owners say that, but wasn’t convinced until he experienced it for himself.

Maybe it’s an attic that collects dust and forgotten knick knacks, or a spare room that you never got around to converting into a home office.
