The Rise and Fall of BirdSupplies.com

What It’s About

Squawk! A longstanding parrot hustle takes flight.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Once again, here’s a two-fold reminder:

Be careful about building your business on one source of income or referrals. But also know that it’s okay to treat your side hustle as “bonus money” that might go away at any time.

Perhaps it’s a matter of perspective and goals.

Fun Fact

Diane was partly inspired to start her own business when she became a stay-at-home mom. She adopted two children from Russia and realized that it would be very important for her to be around as they were adjusting, but she quickly got bored. That’s when she decided to act on her idea for BirdSupplies.com.

Notes from Chris

Episode 618

Diane Burroughs has had an affinity for birds since childhood. Her family raised chickens as she was growing up. Later, as an adult with two children of her own, she found herself rehabilitating injured birds that she found in her neighborhood.

After one successful rescue, Diane and her young children realized how much they missed the bird’s company. It didn’t take much convincing on the kid’s part to get a feathery friend of their own. They set out to find the perfect type of parrot for the family, and Diane soon adopted Peanut, a cockatiel. Once they felt like they could confidently take care of Peanut, Diane adopted a larger and more challenging bird: a Moluccan Cockatoo named Peachy.

Diane was passionate about making sure her birds were properly enriched. Through her extensive research, she knew that the parrot’s exoticism meant that they needed specialized care. Without it, the birds were likely to experience significant stress. Yet, Diane couldn’t find any quality products in her hometown.

I know what you’re thinking… why didn’t Diane just order the products on Amazon? Duh. In literally two days it could be there with prime.

Well, back in 1998, (penicillin was not yet invented, the Model-T automobile was still on the highway, and we were all using dial-up internet) the word Amazon mostly just meant a river in South America. There weren’t a ton of online shopping opportunities back then anyway, especially in a niche market like bird care.

Diane was a stay at home mom at the time and had always dreamed of owning her own business. She knew that parrots were a popular pet—the 3rd most popular in the United States, in fact. Diane also knew that parrots had always been expensive, high maintenance pets.

Although it was risky, Diane had a hunch that the same upper-income people that were attracted to parrots would also be attracted to new technology like e-commerce. She decided to invest $12,000 in her online store, BirdSupplies.com. $9,000 went into web development and infrastructure, and the last $3,000 into inventory.

Diane’s hunch ended up proving right. In the first year, she made $12,000 worth of sales from selling 350 products. There were few competitors, and Diane chose to sell high-end products, resulting in a greater profit. For the next twelve years, Diane’s business grew and grew. She was selling all kinds of items—from bird toys to cages to vitamins—she had it all.

She had a good six months with this. Her SEO was fantastic—whenever people searched for bird supplies of all kinds, she was at the top. Then, in 2011, disaster hit. Diane was relying entirely on Google search results for her sales leads. Well, Google introduced a new algorithm to penalize sites that were using that particular SEO method. This penalty essentially clipped the wings of BirdSupplies.com. It went from being the number one keyword result to number 165.

Diane had gone from making $250K a year to just $50K. It was devastating. She cried fowl, but Google didn’t listen. Also, fowl doesn’t even relate to parrots—another problem. She had to go back to working full-time, and it took her a grueling 18 months to get the penalty removed.

Diane learned the hard way to not put all of her parrot eggs in one basket. She doesn’t put the blame on the Google penalty itself, but on her only using Google for marketing. If she had diversified her advertising, the Google penalty wouldn’t have been as huge of a hit.

Now Diane works on having BirdSupplies.com rank highly wherever she can, not just Google. Not only that, but the 18 months of slow business gave Diane the opportunity to reevaluate her business.

Within the last few years, Diane has narrowed her focus from all things birds to almost exclusively selling feather plucking products. Parrots have a tendency to pull out their feathers. This can be caused by a number of reasons, from boredom to anxiety. Birds live very stressful lives, you know. They have to ask for crackers. They have to repeat things you say. That’s about it… but still, it’s hard.

Now her business is much more manageable. With her specialization, Diane has now written a series of eBooks all about feather plucking. The new business is making $100,000/year. ($100,000/year in feather plucking prevention! And they said it couldn’t be done.)

Although the Google penalty seemed like it was the universe flipping the bird at her business, Diane grew and ultimately became stronger through her struggle. Like a parrot phoenix rising through the ashes, overcoming its desire to pluck her own feathers, she is now stretching her wings, flush with birdseed and PayPal deposits.

Weekly Recap: Don’t Compete with Amazon

Notes from Chris

Episode 617

THEMES & TAKEAWAYS:

A listener by the name of James reached out to ask what my advice would be for people looking to compete with Amazon and eBay—how can small independent shops thrive against big companies?

My advice is don’t compete … you could never compete with Amazon, fair or unfair. But meanwhile, thousands of people are making a living using Amazon’s models (Fulfilled by Amazon, Merch by Amazon, etc.). So you either adapt to one of those or you find a way to do something different.

To hear more, check out today’s Weekly Recap!

WHERE ARE THEY NOW:

This is a new segment we’re trying out with the help of side hustlers that we’ve featured in the past. Today, we have an update from Amanda MacArthur, who was featured very early in the show on Ep. 11.

Attorney Defends Women’s Right To Good Content

What It’s About

Frustrated with superficial offerings, this woman takes content for women to the next level.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

To market, Ashley took key aspects, or demographics, from her audience and targeted these groups. She knew that she had a small audience and wanted to grow it quickly, so she jumped right into using paid posts to spread the word.

This is why it’s so important to narrow down your target audience instead of promoting your side hustle to a more general audience.

Fun Fact

Part of what makes Harness Magazine so unique is the fact that it features real stories from real women. She features a large number of readers and female movers and shakers that her readers can learn from. One of Ashley’s contributors cried when she saw her work has been published in Harness Magazine. This really gave Ashley the feeling she was doing worthwhile work!

Notes from Chris

Episode 616

Ashley Rector was frustrated with the media. Over the last few years she’d noticed a discouraging pattern. Every radio show, magazine or TV segment targeted at women was focused on the same issues; the latest hairstyles, celebrity gossip and fad diets.

There was little of substance. Little that was honest. Little that showed a real glimpse of life—her life—as a modern woman. She didn’t care about Hollywood home-wreckers or hot new heels. And, as it turned out, neither did her other female friends.

The more people Ashley spoke about this issue to the women she knew, both in her professional life as an attorney and her personal life, the more she got the same answers. They were looking for authentic stories which represented their lives as women in the 21st century.

To try and find these stories, Ashley turned her attention online. She looked for little-known magazines which spoke about the issues she cared about, but couldn’t find anything reliable. The odd blog here and there, maybe an article or two, but none of them felt quite right.

Ashley was disappointed by not defeated. If the magazine she wanted didn’t exist, why not create it herself? That way she could create and control the stories she published and ensure they spoke about the topics she cared about.

So, Ashley set to work on creating the magazine. She called it Harness Magazine, which came from the mission statement she wrote, which was to “harness” the voices, ideas, and stories of real women around the world.

Ashley decided the magazine would be split into two formats.

The first would an online publication. Here she would share articles and ideas which were submitted from women around the world. These stories would help to build an audience and build an online brand around her mission.

The second would be a print magazine. Here she would share what she refers to as the “pure essence” of the online version. It would be the best and most relevant stories from the women who wrote for her, with additional and bonus content women couldn’t find online.

As the online presence of Harness began to grow, it attracted advertisers. It wasn’t long before she was earning at least $300-$500 a month from sponsored posts.

The magazine makes money from these wholesale orders and advertising placement, as well as a subscription model Ashley has created on the Harness website. Issue 1 brought in just $400, but by the time issue II was ready for print, she’d scored a $5,000 wholesale order and other orders that added up to more than $21,000.

Looking to the future, Ashley wants to continue to grow the print version of the magazine. She’s on a mission to harness the power of real women’s stories… and she wants to build it in a sustainable way.

Aussie Mom Earns $3,000/Month From Affiliate Links

What It’s About

A remote working pro who helps free others from their desks.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Even if a market looks saturated from the outside, you shouldn’t be afraid. You can always make it work if you bring a unique and different angle to the topics in your niche.

Fun Fact

Interest in remote work has been increasing all over the world. No doubt people are now finding that remote work not only offers more freedom but also makes you more efficient since you save time traveling to your office. If your current job doesn’t offer the chance to work remotely, consider starting your own side hustle.

Notes from Chris

Episode 615

When Sireesha Narumanshi first started looking online for remote work opportunities ten years ago, she found herself at a total loss. The concept of remote work was still in its infancy, and such opportunities were scarce. The few opportunities she could find produced more questions than answers. Was it legitimate? Did it pay well? What was the next step? These were some of the questions that Sireesha had to wrap her head around.

Nevertheless, she kept searching. With two young daughters, Sireesha believed that this was the best way she could spend time with her family while earning a living. Her patience and persistence paid off as she eventually found a job that was suitable for her. But not everyone is as fortunate. Several people she knew quit searching for remote job opportunities, abandoning the idea forever after encountering the obstacles.

Over the next couple of years, Sireesha noticed that interest in remote work opportunities grew substantially. More people were looking for a career where they wouldn’t be bound to their desk from 9-to-5, even if they wanted to continue working for a company. By now she’d gained a lot of experience and had the potential to save others hours of frustration.

Apprehensive and excited at the same time, Sireesha launched Crowd Work News in 2016.

The first step was to conduct research to determine what was missing in the remote workspace. This gave her ideas for content that would appeal to her audience. For instance, she knew that those new to remote work wanted ideas on the type of services they could offer to companies. Remembering that she struggled with determining the legitimacy of jobs when she first started out, Sireesha also started linking out to trusted platforms where many of these jobs could be found.

Although many job seekers felt that there was a lack of resources in the remote space, it wasn’t the case that there were no sites catering to this demand. A lot of sites had sprung up to accommodate this interest, just like Crowd Work News had. But as Sireesha says, you can always make it work if you come at things from a unique angle even if the market may look saturated from the outside.

These days she’s earning over $2,000/month from affiliate marketing and another $1,000/month from display advertising. Her only cost is the $10/month she pays to host the site.

According to Sireesha, the best part of this is that it’s all passive. She could take a week off, never touch the site, and still make money. Moving forward, she hopes to make the transition to a travel photographer. She’ll no longer just be creating remote work opportunities, but going to remote places to see them for herself.

Swipe Some Inspiration From This Sticky Side Hustle

What It’s About

A side hustle success story that won’t easily wipe away.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

When we were talking to Caylee, she said something that really stood out to me: “Had I forced things along the way, I’m not sure I’d be where I am with it. I didn’t put pressure on it to sustain me, and that’s allowed it to grow in different ways.”

There’s definitely a benefit in starting something as a side hustle because you don’t need it to sustain you in any way, but finding time to dedicate to it can be a bit of a struggle. Do you feel guilty about not having enough time to work on your side hustle?

Fun Fact

You may be asking yourself, why did the whiteboard become such a huge success when we already had blackboards? The answer is “convenience.” Blackboards were hard to wipe clean and turned whitish after a little use. You had to wet-clean them frequently to keep the writing clear. In fact, the earlier versions of whiteboards also needed to be wiped with a wet cloth. It was for this reason that despite being invented as far back as the late 1950s, whiteboards did not become very popular until after the invention of dry erasable marker, aka whiteboard marker, in 1975.

Notes from Chris

Episode 614

Caylee Betts, an NYC-based product design manager at Buzzfeed, knows a thing or two about time management. She balances her day job with her blossoming side hustle, along with a penchant for photography, taking design commissions, and another side project that saw her build an app that connects recreational soccer players. Oh, and she mentors junior designers, too.

It seems we can thank one of her many side projects for being the catalyst for the latest dose of side hustle inspiration. She stumbled upon the idea almost by accident while designing restaurant menus from her design shop.

The restaurant asked Caylee to help them design a laminated menu because they wanted to cut down on the damage to their paper menus. Once the project was over, the rest of the laminated samples were still in Caylee’s office and she had an urge to write on them. She bought markers on Amazon and started using them for note-taking, illustrations, and to-do lists. And every time another designer saw her unofficial prototype in action, they asked about it.

When Caylee and her husband had some downtime after moving to New York from Seattle in 2016, she decided to see if she could earn any money from her lamination project. It took her about a year to go from prototype to sellable product. Most manufacturers she approached weren’t interested in working with her, and the core material was also unexpectedly expensive. Caylee invested $600 into her first production run, at a cost of $4-5 per sheet.

She described it as a reusable, durable, synthetic paper made for creative, productive people. They’re designed to be used with wet-erase pens, allowing your work to stay put until rinsed with water. They’re the perfect companion in the home and in the office, and they’re called Swipies.

After launching her online shop, sales weren’t gangbusters, but it didn’t take long for a series of orders to start trickling in. That trickle became a flow, and now, 12 months later her monthly sales hovered between $700 and $800. She had a lot of revenue spikes, including a $10,000 month after she ran ads on a popular design podcast. That led to custom partnerships with companies that ranged from $1,000 to $5,000.

Her first partnership was with Moz, an inbound marketing service. Airbnb was her next partnership, and, more than anything, served as a sign that with consistent effort comes consistent sales.

By the sounds of it, she might not have to go back to the drawing board for new ideas anytime soon. Or if she did, she could just erase what she wrote and start over.

Developer Gets Paid for Weekend Trips Abroad

What It’s About

Travels abroad lead to a side hustle that really goes the distance.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

When everyone is going in one direction, don’t be afraid to look the other way. Some people are probably being left out, and you can profit from that gap. Not only that, but you also might find it to be easier than trying to be another me-too in a pattern or trend that so many other people are chasing.

Fun Fact

Kristen has visited 50+ countries in 6 continents and partnered with 30+ tourism boards across Europe, the US, and Latin America to promote destinations around the world.

Notes from Chris

Episode 613
Kristen Schoeck had always felt the call to travel. She knew there was a whole world outside her borders, and she wanted to immerse herself in it. However, her life wasn’t ready to be packed into a rucksack and carted off around the world. She had a full-time job as a web developer that she enjoyed, a partner she loved, and a life she wanted to keep living at home. Kristen wasn’t ready to give it all up for a life on the road.

In her position, it would be easy to resign travel to just a pipe-dream, promising to get to it when we’re older or we retire. But not Kristen.

She chose to see the restrictions of her day-to-day life as challenges to embrace. They weren’t reasons not to travel, but obstacles to overcome. She wanted to see how much of the world she could fit into the time she did have.

Kristen began to use vacation time from her job tactically. She’d utilize weekends to visit closer destinations, like Mexico, and her two-week vacation time to explore further away places. And, in her first year, she became so good at this that she was able to visit 13 countries without taking extra time away from work!

While researching and planning her trips, Kristen noticed a trend. There were lots of websites and travel guides suited to the long-term backpacker with oodles of time to explore their destination. But, there were very few to help the time-strapped, weekend adventurer looking to eek every second out of their trip.

Kirsten felt she couldn’t be the only person looking to see the world at the weekend. She decided that if nobody else was going to do it, she would create the content that people needed. She was doing the traveling anyway, so why not document it? So, she took her camera on her next trip to scenic Iceland.

And Kristen documented everything. From the hotel she booked and the tour she’d planned to the gorgeous landscapes and the food she ate, every little detail a weekend traveler could need was recorded and featured in the video. When she got home, she edited it using iMovie, and uploaded to a YouTube channel she called Run The Atlas.

On April 27th 2016, Kristen uploaded her video to YouTube and found it was an instant success. It quickly amassed 136,500 views—more than the population of Reykjavik where she was a few weeks before—and confirmed her suspicion that there were other people out there who wanted this kind of content, too.

Kristen decided she would create one of these videos for each of her trips. She also invested in some tools to help her better understand her audience. Although she never quite replicated the success of her Iceland video, she was slowly beginning to accrue subscribers and views on the other videos she created.

In addition to the free trips, all of this has lead to a yearly income of between $7,000 and $10,000.

According to Kristen, the best way to start and grow a travel business is to create valuable, shareable, and unique content. Find out what your audience is looking for and cater to that, but with your own take on it. There are so many people vying for attention—it’s on you to stand out!

Looking to the future, Kristen wants to expand into creating travel guides, products and merchandise. All the while continuing to see the world at the weekend!

It’s All Smiles For Two Friends Brushing Away Bacteria

What It’s About

Two friends help Aussies clean up their act with silver embedded toothbrushes.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

If you are just starting out, the distribution model can work well. Most people selling physical products start on their own websites selling directly to consumers and try to build their brand first, but that’s not essential. If you have a unique product and reps that are willing to sell on your behalf, you can make a significant income. However, be certain of who you are going into business with first. Withhold stock and be a lot wearier if payments start running late.

Fun Fact

Your toothbrush is home to more than 100 million bacteria including E.coli and Staphylococcus (Staph) bacteria, according to researchers at the University of Manchester in England. The Mouthwatchers toothbrushes include small particles of silver which is a known anti-bacterial. They are capable of killing any nasties within 6 hours, ensuring you have a perfectly clean toothbrush by the time you wake up.

Notes from Chris

Episode 612

Dean Roller and Andrew Adams are two best mates from Australia. They met through Dean’s now ex-girlfriend over 10 years ago and bonded over a shared interest in self-improvement. When they met, Dean worked as an Adwords campaign manager and Andrew in real estate. They both describe themselves as being terrible employees. They’d spend half their working hours daydreaming about business ideas they could start on the side.

As the years went by, they dabbled in a few ventures—mainly affiliate marketing and foreign currency trading. While they generated a bit of side income, neither of them made enough money to put a dent in their bills, let alone think of quitting their full-time work.

That brings us to 2013 when both guys felt it was time for a change of careers. Dean began managing an online bean bag store (as one does) and Andrew, seeking more fulfillment, started work in the disability support field. Luckily, they both landed in jobs they enjoyed. With the baggage of a daily grind off their shoulders, their minds became a little more creative. They’d regularly meet up and brainstorm side hustle ideas.

But it wasn’t until one day in late 2015 that the right concept came along.

Dean’s mom is a dentist, and they stopped by to say hello one afternoon at her clinic. While there, they struck up a conversation with a patient in the waiting room. She told them about an amazing toothbrush she’d found on a recent trip to the U.S. It was called Mouthwatchers. It had thousands of bristles, was soft on the gums, and had a unique selling point: the bristles had antibacterial silver embedded in them that killed 99% of germs on the brush.

The patient’s enthusiasm for the product piqued their interest, so Dean and Andrew decided to each order one online and try it for themselves. After using it, they were all smiles! They loved the brushes and thought they‘d try selling them locally. After all, Dean’s own mom was a dentist and knew the drill!

They placed an order of 1,000 toothbrushes to start, at a cost of just over $4,000. They were now officially in the toothbrush business.

With inventory in hand, they hit the pavement and spoke to local drugstores, offering them to stock toothbrushes on consignment. A consignment deal meant the stores would only pay if the brushes sold. In other words, the stores had no risk—and because of that, many of them took the offer.

They selected a distribution model over direct sales for a few reasons. They knew they’d be able to build a website to showcase the toothbrushes but weren’t convinced they could generate traffic at a low enough cost to make the margins work. The toothbrushes were only $9.95 each which didn’t leave much wiggle room. The idea was that by cutting reps in on a deal to sell the brushes, there’d be no additional costs other than to the rep, who was essentially on commission.

So far, this strategy has worked well for them, although hasn’t been without its problems.

However, those ups and downs have been nothing more than small cavities in an otherwise perfect smile. Things have gone very well so far. So well that over the last 12 months they have generated $30,000 in profit selling the Mouthwatchers toothbrushes to the local market. Some of that money has been spent on creating a locally targeted site for Mouthwatchers with a subscription toothbrush model.

They both still enjoy their current work and aren’t in any rush to leave, so, for now, they’re not concerned with paying themselves more of the profit. They are putting their money where their mouth is.

CPA Earns Six-Figures Selling Spreadsheets to Etsy Sellers

What It’s About

A CPA uses what she knows to earn six-figures!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Part of what makes Janet’s journey so interesting is that it was such an evolution for her to figure out (finally) what she was both passionate about AND good at, which I think many people can relate to. It’s not always just a light bulb moment—sometimes, you have to throw some spaghetti at the wall!

Fun Fact

This side hustle has had a ton of benefits for Janet. Because of it, her husband was able to retire this year, and it’s provided them with a ton of schedule flexibility with their two young children. They’ve been able to go on so many adventures with their kids before they’re in school. How many people can say that they’re able to do that?

Notes from Chris

Episode 611

The fluorescent lights, grueling schedule, and endless calculations of being a CPA for international tax was sucking the life out of Janet LeBlanc’s soul. She knew something had to change, but at first she didn’t know what it was—or how she would do it.

The first change occurred when she left her job to work for a corporate office where she’d have more free time to explore her interests and be with her husband. As a big fan of handmade jewelry from Etsy, Janet had always wanted to give the craft a try for herself—and now she had the time to.

Towards the end of 2011, she opened her own Etsy store for handmade jewelry: Lazy Owl Boutique. A few months and a couple hundred sales later, she was selling at craft fairs across Houston. It was a pretty good gig, but when Janet had her first child in 2013, its limitations became clear.

Every product required making, taking pictures, posting a listing, and eventually a trip to the post office. It was a lot of work for a small profit, and even though she left her corporate job to be a mother, she still needed something a little less hands-on. That’s when Janet had her next idea.

So many Etsy sellers lamented their struggles with taxes and keeping up with all the money stuff. What if Janet leveraged her accounting knowledge to create spreadsheets that could empower makers and sellers to run their businesses efficiently?

She didn’t act on it right away because she thought it might be too boring, but…she just couldn’t let go of the spreadsheet idea. It really was perfect. She had the precise skills and knowledge that so many makers needed to organize their business finances—and she even knew she could monetize it by selling the spreadsheets on Etsy.

Finally, in 2015, Janet succumbed to her inner voice and began crafting tax, sales, and inventory spreadsheets. The name of her new venture? Paper + Spark. She also created some video tutorials that she would send to customers to help them use their products right out of the digital box. By the end of 2015, Janet had earned just over $10,000 from selling spreadsheets. It was working and it got better.

Fast forward to 2018. Paper and Spark has surpassed the six-figure milestone, allowing Janet’s husband to exit his full-time job as well. The family is savoring their newfound freedom by spending lots of time taking their kids on adventures, some across town and some across the country.

But Janet, still on fire as ever, hasn’t stopped looking forward. She’s planning some new courses, some more digital tools, some live teaching events at conferences, and maybe even a book. No matter which direction she goes, she’s just grateful that she’s found a way to mesh her passion with her skills in a way that empowers others.

It’s pretty much a dream come true… perhaps the only good dream to ever come from an Excel spreadsheet.

Weekly Recap: Have a #HappierLaborDay!

Notes from Chris

Episode 610

THEMES & TAKEAWAYS:

In Gretchen Rubin’s most recent episode (Ep. 184—listen to it here!), she included a number of tips and ideas about how to have a Happier Labor Day (#happierlaborday).

I’ll just note that my philosophy is that the meaning of life is not to stop working and sit on the beach. That’s fine for a few days or a week, but then what do you do?

Surely the answer is to find meaningful work, something that you believe in and can look forward to.

If I think about times of career satisfaction vs. dissatisfaction, most of the satisfying times came when I was challenging myself in some significant way, doing something new, or embracing a quest of some kind. The times I was dissatisfied were when I tried to do something I wasn’t good at (and didn’t want to do), but I felt like I had to for whatever reason.

Or I was otherwise striving in some way that felt inauthentic.

So my challenge to you today is that if you feel dissatisfied, let’s mix it up somehow! Promise yourself that you’ll do something by the end of the day to make a change.

If you’re interested in learning more about Happier Labor Day, check out today’s Weekly Recap and head on over to Gretchen’s podcast page!

Aussie Cyclist Shifts Into Gear With Online Shop

What It’s About

A reselling side hustle helps this Aussie shift into high gear!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Ryan’s 9-to-5 job has been incredibly helpful to his success because he gets to see the business operations of a larger company in action. However, it’s the lessons he’s learned through trial and error, like sustainable pricing and customer interactions, that have helped him the most.

Fun Fact

Here’s one I bet you haven’t heard: the world’s longest “tandem” bicycle was more than 67 feet long and seated 35 people, but the most expensive bike ever made was artist Damien Hirst’s ‘Butterfly Bike’ which sold at auction for $500,000.

Notes from Chris

Episode 609

For Ryan Tierney, a 28-year-old account manager for a bicycle wholesale business from Brisbane, Australia, his side hustle idea came to him on the heels on a painful breakup, while he was staring at the bottom of his second pint of chocolate ice cream.

Ryan had been saving money to buy Christmas presents when he received the news of his girlfriend wanting to move on. A helpful friend suggested that instead of wallowing with a third pint of ice cream, he should go out and spend that money on himself. Ryan, an obsessive cyclist, had his eye on some premium bike gear from the US but was held back by the “hideously expensive” freight fees.

His next thought? Start a distribution business and get the products at a cheaper price, while bringing a sought-after brand to Australia. All that sounded great while drinking beer with his friends the next night, but when Ryan looked into it a bit more, he realized that he would need more than $15,000 to get started… which was a lot more than he had saved for a few Christmas presents.

But, not to be dissuaded, Ryan began researching other products he could sell within Australia. He had been getting into adventure cycling and camping trips and had discovered a brand that sold straps that bind various items and gear together. Ryan also was a fan of another company which sold 3D printed bike racks.

With these two products and a personal connection to the cycling community in Brisbane, Ryan decided to take the risk and get the wheels turning on his side hustle, which he called Urban Dwellers. And he didn’t spend $15,000 to do it… he spent about $3,000.

Targeted ads had done their job and Ryan discovered Shopify’s free 14-day trial. He signed up, created his storefront, and learned his way around the platform. He ordered a small stock of 100 straps and 50 bike racks, investing much of that $3,000, and got to work on building relationships with other cyclists to promote his new store.

Two years later, he brings in 60 orders a month result in about $5,500 of sales. Of that, he typically brings in $1,200 a month in profit. His take-home revenue is conservative because he uses much of his profit to reinvest into Urban Dwellers and purchase new products, or send samples to potential stores.

Ryan is always on the hunt for new products to distribute, especially if he gets to put them through their paces on one of his many bike adventures. He’s also been trying to grow his side hustle by reaching out to different kinds of stores beyond the cycling industry.

His main motivation for putting the pedal to the metal? The ability to travel. Ryan’s been saving his side hustle profits so he can automate his business and travel the world with his new girlfriend (not the one who dumped him before Christmas—she’s actually a writer on the Side Hustle School team!). He’s shifted into a new gear, getting a grip on his life and climbing to the top.

MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:

  • Urban Dwellers: If you’re looking for something to take your cycling to the next gear, head on over to Ryan’s website
  • Shopify: Ryan used Shopify to setup the website for Urban Dwellers, and they’re offering a 21-day trial and exclusive discount for all Side Hustle School listeners!
