Q&A: How to scale a pen-to-paper greeting service?

What It’s About

A listener wants to know if a choose-what-you-pay model will work for her creative lettering hustle.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1128

Remember, I want to know about your projects! I heard about a really cool one today – you’ll hear about it too – and I very much enjoyed the first month of our Year of Interaction.

We’ll be ramping things up as we go along, with more questions, the new Throwback Thursday series (we’ve done two so far), and something special I’m saving for April, when I’ll begin an all-new tour.

This listener started a pen-to-paper initiative to connect people through snail mail. It’s starting well, but how can it scale—and is a Pay-What-You-Will pricing model the best option?

I launched the XO Project, a pen to paper initiative to connect humans offline through snail mail. The idea was to put my interest in calligraphy to use by writing short greetings on behalf of others. It’s a simple process. A person submits their message and details through an online form on my website. I calligraph the message on a card and address the envelope. Add postage and mail it up.

At first I offered this for free to test the idea and refine the process. Now it’s offered at a choose what you pay model to keep it accessible. The cards are branded and have a message on the back inviting the recipient to participate as well. Fifty-nine notes were mailed out the first year of the project, and sixty-seven notes were sent out last year in twenty nineteen.

My question is twofold; how do I figure out who is the best audience for this and how might a service based project like this scale would also be curious what you think about the choose-what-you-pay price model?

Bellydance Class Gets High-Tech Update

What It’s About

A virtual assistant sways to her own beat and creates an ultimate bundle for online belly dancing lessons.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

A good side hustle idea should not only sound interesting but compelling enough for someone to make a purchase. Prove that people are willing to pay for your service/products and you might be on to something.

Fun Fact

The first day of her first bundle launch, Tiffany passed out for a few hours having pulled an all-nighter the previous night. Her husband dutifully sat by her inbox, watching for anything urgent that came in, so she could get some precious shut-eye.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1127

Bellydance classes can be a fun way to stay active, learn a cool new skill, and be part of a community. But if you don’t live in an area with any studios that teach this ancient practice, you’re out of luck—or at least you were before Tiffany Hunter created the Bellydance Bundle in 2017.

Tiffany was working as a virtual assistant for a bundle of online courses that teach people how to build a location-free lifestyle, when she had the idea to create a similar product for Bellydance.

As a dancer, she knew the community well and thought that a different way to learn could help students and teachers alike. Online courses were growing in popularity, but her beloved art of Bellydance was behind the curve. She thought she could change that.

With the permission of her bosses, Tiffany borrowed from their format and website layout to create “The Bellydance Bundle.” In this bundle, Tiffany takes online classes from a variety of teachers, and sells them as one package at an incredibly discounted price for a short period of time.

Once a year, aspiring dancers have the opportunity to buy the package. It’s on sale for seven days only, because the same classes are already available online at a higher cost. The bundle is an incentive to dancers get the classes at a discount, and a way for the teachers to get exposure to more of the community.

To get things started, Tiffany spent $150 on a website. Specifically, she bought some stock photos because she wanted the site to be beautiful, unlike most other dance-class focused sites at the time. She also spent $15 a month for SendOwl, a site that helps you to sell digital goods online.

Because the bundle sale happens once a year, it also means that most of the work happens in the three-to-four months leading up to the sale. Tiffany spends about half of the time working on admin details, 25% on managing bundle contributors, and the final 25% on marketing initiatives.

2019 was Tiffany’s third year selling The Bellydance Bundle, and she brought in enough profit to fully cover her full-time salary. She keeps the cost of running the sale as low as possible, maintaining her affiliate strategy to promote the bundle and grow her target audience.

Now that she’s built a strong brand, Tiffany is ready to branch out. She is working on other products that can be sold year-round, including a journal to help dancers keep track of what they’re learning and a second bundle focused on a different part of the bountiful bellydance world.

Q&A: How to find vendors for a travel-themed online store?

What It’s About

A listener seeks vendors for her online marketplace. Should she be seeking something else instead?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1126

In many of the stories we feature, the side hustler in question is making something for sale. Today’s caller is thinking about a different approach: creating a travel-themed, multi-vendor online store. In other words, she wants to be the curator … and she’s wondering where the vendors will come from.

What’s the best way to find those vendors—and what are the pros and cons of this idea?

“I’m working on opening an online store, multi-vendor marketplace through Shopify and I’m focusing on a travel product. I’m thinking of passport holders, engraved wine glasses with maps of Paris, travel-themed jewelry, etc. And as a travel lover myself, I’ve spent hours searching through Etsy, Amazon and other sites. So I think there is an awesome opportunity to kind of bring it all together into one place.

My question is, when starting a store like this, I’m putting my vendor list together. Do you think it’s best to start with vendors? Like Etsy smaller vendors or reach out to larger, more established vendors. I love the idea of not carrying inventory, but I really want to be able to curate my product and get the right vendor list from the get go.”

TBT: Satin Pillowcases Inspire Dreamy Profits

What It’s About

Revisiting a seller of luxurious satin pillowcases featured back in episode #143.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1125

Welcome to Throwback Thursday / “Where are they now?” where we take an in-depth look at someone who’s story has evolved considerably since we first featured them.

So far in these features we’ve had a New York City musician with a blog teaching jazz that becomes a multiple six-figure business (Ep. 1111), and a Denver woman who leads food tours for up to 700 people a month (Ep. 1118).

Today, in our latest feature, we’ll hear from someone with a sleepy idea. Wait, that sounds bad … how about someone with a savvy idea to make dreamy profits in the form of satin pillowcases? Yeah, that’s better.

We first profiled Dale Janée long ago (Ep. 143) on the show and then in the 100 SIDE HUSTLES book.

What’s happened since?

Q&A: How can I sell flash cards to pharmacy students?

What It’s About

How to get a niche product into the hands of your target audience.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1124

This week we’ve been looking at deciding on an idea. As part of that process, you need to think about your ideal customer: who is best suited for this product or service of yours.

Sometimes people worry that the market they’ve chosen is too small. I think you should have the opposite worry: that you’re trying to reach so many people that your offer isn’t specific enough.

The listener who called in today has made a set of flashcards to help pharmacy students memorize generic drug names, but is having a hard time finding her market. What should she try?

“My Side hustle is PharmaCues, which is a set of flashcards that use mnemonics and pictures to make it easier to memorize branded generic drug names. I have them up on Etsy for now just to test the waters. My question for you is how do I find and market to a very specific and small audience?

My product really only is for pharmacy and pharmacy technician students, and it’s a lot harder than I thought it would be to find interested people. Do you have any advice?”

Flimsy Notebooks Inspire Crafty Construction Worker

What It’s About

If you can’t find a tough, waterproof leather notebook— build one!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Before having his side hustle, Anthony’s main goal was to solve a problem. By creating a product he needed, Anthony was able to fill a gap in the market.

He attributes a huge part of his success to his attitude. Anthony says that, “Believe that you were created with the ability to create and accomplish anything you put your mind to.”

Fun Fact

When Anthony isn’t working on his leather notebooks, he is also a motivational speaker and inspirational hip hop artist. Anthony is passionate about spreading positive messages through music and sharing the ways that he overcame street life.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1122
Anthony Gonzales was working in construction, his career for more than ten years. It wasn’t a bad job—it helped him support his family, including five kids under the age of nine, and he loved working with his hands.

But, over those years, Anthony also had an irritation that just wouldn’t go away! As a safety supervisor, he was always taking notes in the field—and none of his notebooks would last very long. Between the water, heat, and wear and tear, those notebooks would start splitting at the seams almost immediately.

He was especially frustrated that the notebooks deemed to be “genuine leather” still didn’t hold up. He had leather boots for work that could withstand the elements … why weren’t his notebooks capable of the same thing?

Anthony turned to the internet, and quickly learned that the best and most durable leather is full-grain leather, which is what saddles are made of. Unfortunately, he couldn’t find any notebooks made from it.

You know what happens next: if he was going to find the notebook he was searching for, he was going to have to make it himself. He had no experience in leathercrafting, but he knew that with all the information available, there was nothing holding him back. After all, he was handy.

Although he was inexperienced in leather crafting, that didn’t suede his confidence. He got to work, believing that if he was precise enough and took the time to make a quality product, he could get paid to learn. Quickly, he adopted “make it happen”, the same phrase on his original notebook, as his business mantra.

By the fall of 2019, he was bringing in close to $8,000 in profit each month. This amount is slightly higher than average due to the holiday season, but his sales have grown exponentially since starting.

Anthony attributes this bump to using organic social media. Ad campaigns weren’t doing anything for him, but his normal Facebook and Instagram posts really increased his following, especially when he posted authentic things like his kids with him in the shop. He also gets a lot of personal referrals.

Not only that, but 84 Leather now sells far more than just notebooks. Anthony makes everything from belts, wallets, knife sheaths, key chains, business portfolios and more. He’s expanded his audience from making products for people both out in the field and those in the office setting.

The crux of this success has been his willingness to solve one of his own problems. He was bothered on a daily basis by those flimsy notebooks. Rather than accept this irritation as a fact of life, Anthony took the problem into his own hands. He figured out why it wasn’t working—and had the confidence to teach himself a new skill in order to solve it.

CLASSROOM: Deciding on an Idea

What It’s About

With so many hustle ideas, how do you choose one? This tool can help!

Notes from Chris

Episode 1122

Welcome to the weekly Classroom segment! Last week we talked about different categories of side hustles, specifically identifying the difference between products and services. Before that we looked at where moneymaking ideas come from.

What if you have a lot of ideas? It might sound like a good problem to have … but of course it’s still a problem, especially if the presence of so many ideas prevents you from making decisions and focusing.

Side Hustle School is designed for busy people who don’t have a lot of time, so if you identify with that description, you know it’s not possible for you to take action on all your ideas.

So … what do you do?

Today I’ll show you a tool I’ve used and recommended for years. I first wrote about it in the book SIDE HUSTLE—so if you’ve read it thereof if you’ve heard me talk about this before, I’ll use all new examples here to keep it fresh.

Here’s how it works…

When you’re starting out, you might struggle with ideas. In the long-term, though, being able to identify potential ideas is rarely a problem. Side hustle success comes from making ideas happen!

In fact, you’ll often have more ideas than you can handle. What do you do if you have two or three different ideas? Should you try them all at once? Should you only pick one?

First, here is some general, all-purpose advice in two parts.

  • 1) Get clear on your goals! Make money soon, build an asset, explore a different creative skill? Your idea should connect directly to your goals. For example: long-term mission is different from pay off debt.
  • 2) Remove the pressure from the decision. You’re not selecting an idea forever. You’re selecting the right idea for you now.

Next, at the workshops I taught a while back, we used a tool called the Side Hustle Selector. I’m going to show you a stripped-down version here.

When you have more than one idea, consider three variables:

  • Feasibility – How confident are you in the ability to begin turning the idea into action in a short period of time?
  • Profitability – How confident are you in the potential to make money from this idea, also in a short period of time?
  • Motivation – How excited are you about this idea?

If you have two or more ideas, see how they rank in each of these categories.

  • * It’s okay to estimate if you’re not sure, this is all about making a back-of-the-napkin evaluation.
  • * Looking at the data can often help you decide between competing ideas, or at the very least, reduce the number of options you’re considering.
  • * If they’re truly equal, well, just pick one!

In the episode, I’ll give you an example of how this works in the real world, and then an assignment for you to apply this to your own ideas.

Listen to today’s Classroom episode to learn more…

THIS WEEK’S ASSIGNMENT:

Pare down your list of ideas by ranking them with the Side Hustle Selector. Eliminate any that aren’t a good fit, and make a decision on which idea you’re going to work on first.

Q&A: How to grow a face painting business?

What It’s About

A listener wonders how to grow her face painting hustle.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1121

I have long had a goal of every listener who believes in the values of earning additional income, whether they want to quit their job or not, being able to earn at least $500/month. I like this number because it’s both obtainable and meaningful. You can’t live off $500/month, but for a lot of people, it dose make a significant difference in their lifestyle, especially if they’re trying to save or pay off debt.

The other reason why I like starting with a goal like that is because once you can achieve a basic level of income from most project, it’s usually not that hard to increase it. It’s not twice as hard to go to $1,000/month, or four times as hard to go to $2,000, for example.

There are two ways to grow, especially with a service like the one you’ll hear about in today’s listener question, which comes from a South Carolina woman who’s making money with facepainting, but would like to grow by selling more to her customers. What should she try?

My side hustle is facepainting, and my question is about creating more income streams from this project. Other facepainters do things like making videos or offering courses or selling paint to other facepainters. But I was thinking of going a different way and selling more to my customers. I’ve thought about pairing up with other vendors like photographers and balloon twisters, and was wondering about other ideas you have.

Peter Kaffen was like a lot of college students—short on cash—so he got a job working at a restaurant. It did the trick for a while. But at some point Peter heard the adage, “If you don’t work on your dreams, you’ll work on the dreams of others,” and a fire was lit.

He didn’t want to be an order-taker or a tool for someone else’s success. He wanted to build his own. Peter started toying with a few ways he could start his own thing, and it didn’t take long for him to pick house cleaning.

A lot of people hate chores and cleaning—especially his upperclassmen friends at college—so he bought a book (“How to Start a Cleaning Business”) and some supplies. In December of 2015, he started Odd Jobs Incorporated.

His childhood home was good practice for his new cleaning skills, but he really wanted to challenge himself. He talked to a few seniors in his fraternity whose house was in a state of squalidness and offered to clean it for free if he could take ‘before and after’ pictures.

They agreed and Peter labored for several hours. It was hard work, but worth it. The upperclassmen were so impressed they paid Peter anyway—then quickly referred him to their sister sorority!

After a while, he began to get consistent house cleaning gigs at $20 per hour, mostly from word of mouth, but also from a platform called Thumbtack Pro, which enabled him to bid on local jobs. After spending some time on the platform, however, he realized something: there were way more moving jobs than cleaning jobs—and they paid a lot better.

So he started bidding on these moving jobs. He still remembers the first one he got—he hired two helpers, did the job in an hour, and walked away with $100. It was good money, even at his low price. So in December of 2016, he switched the business name to “Greek Movers.” (He knew he wanted to go big or go Homer.)

Now a junior in college, Peter started being more intentional about marketing. He set up a professional Yelp page. He emailed people who were asking for help with moving on Craigslist. He dropped business cards off at local businesses.

He even started experimenting with Google AdWords, although that turned out to be the riskiest option. Running ads was a completely different skill—a fairly technical one—and Peter found that if he got cocky and tried to run too many too fast, he’d just end up wasting money. There are only so many people looking to move at any given time.

The initial strategy was simple: start off with a very low wage to quickly gain testimonials and experience, and make the customer cover the cost of the U-Haul truck. With these unreasonably low prices, Greek Movers was able to smite the competition and quickly earn a good reputation.

When Peter graduated college, he didn’t change course. Greek Movers was working—and he was going to keep growing it full-time. He opened up an Excel spreadsheet for the very first time to examine the state of his business—something we usually suggest doing a bit sooner—and discovered something that made his heart skip a beat: he was on track for a $7,000 month.

No matter how he grows the business this year, Peter’s not building someone else’s dream anymore. He’s building his own Parthenon of freedom in the form of Greek Movers.

Quote of the Day
"Rules are essential in a service business. Your team wants to do the best they can, but they can’t read your mind. So having definite rules telling them what they can and can’t do really helps make everything clear cut."

Q&A: How to attract a low-tech audience to blockchain?

What It’s About

How to market a high-tech idea to unfamiliar customers.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1119

WToday’s listener wants to help a low-tech audience to understand and benefit from blockchain technology. How should she proceed? I found this question really interesting. There’s power in helping a group of people gain access to a market or platform or opportunity that has otherwise eluded them.

However, I’ve also seen it done the wrong way. I’m reminded of someone who once dressed up in character as a Luddite senior citizen as part of a mission to help seniors with tech. Even though this woman herself was in the same demographic, I found it strange … and I’m pretty sure that a lot of the people she was trying to help did so, too.

To succeed in your goal of translation or adaptation, you need to be very careful with your assumptions. I also think there’s a critical question to answer (and make sure you have a good answer!) at the outset.

“My side hustle is helping those with no technical skills enter into the ledger platform technology known as Blockchain. Currently, I have several possibilities for accomplishing my goal. My question is: how do I attract my ideal audience and get this system validated? Any insight you could provide is appreciated!”
