Q&A: Should I create a website for medical coders?

What It’s About

A listener wants to monetize a site that helps medical coders find continuing education credits.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1400

Today’s listener is working on a website that helps medical coders earn free continuing education (CE) credit. How could this project be monetized?

Many industries require certification and a minimum number of ongoing training hours every year. This is known as continuing education (CE) or Continual Professional Development (CPD). Naturally, CE is an industry in itself, and one with a lot of opportunities.

If you are a professional in a field that requires CE, and you are qualified to provide some of the training (or if you can become qualified), this can be a remarkable opportunity. I have a friend who’s doing this for therapists, and another one working on it for accountants.

Back in Ep. 798, we featured an Australian architect who leaves her marketing agency to launch a directory for other architects in need of credits. This directory goes on to earn six figures a year.

The situation is a little different for today’s listener, though, so let’s get into the details of her question.

“Hi, Chris. This is Trisha from Cleveland, Ohio. I’ve listened to your podcast for about two years now, and I love all the practical advice you offer. I’m thinking about starting a side hustle that centers around a certification I hold in medical coding to maintain certification. Coders must earn 20 for continuing education credits every two years. Many employers are no longer offering to pay for staff education, so this can get quite expensive. Some companies offer free seat use, but it takes some searching.

I’ve posed a question to a Facebook group asking if it would be helpful if I sent out a list of free S.E use. I found I got an overwhelming number of requests that said yes. So because of this, I’m considering creating a Web site and a monthly newsletter listing all the free CE offerings that I was able to locate. I’m looking for ways to monetize this. I’m thinking ads would be the best route, but I’m leery of clogging up the Web site with ads. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks much. “

Q&A: Should I keep politics out of my business?

What It’s About

A listener wonders if they should keep politics and their business separate.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1399

Here’s a very timely question, because technically it connects with the 2020 U.S. presidential election. However, the caller mentions that we are living in a heightened, divisive time in regards to political communication and affiliation. Sadly, I don’t think that’s going to change anytime soon.

In today’s question, a listener yearns for the days when he could express his support for a political candidate while still maintaining positive relationships with friends and neighbors who disagreed. Now that he has a side hustle, he’s wondering if he should just keep his mouth shut.

“Hey Chris, this is Steve and I’ve been listening to the show for about 2 years. Thanks for all the great advice. With the election coming up, I’m wondering if I should maintain a total division of political views from my growing side hustle. It’s a very divisive issue here in Grand Rapids, Michigan. When I grew up, it wasn’t a big deal for friends and neighbors to vote for opposing parties and still share other parts of life. People would disagree with one another, but it wasn’t the end of the world. Nowadays, that seems far less common. “

TBT: Minimalist Backpacks With a Cause

What It’s About

An update from a couple that sells minimalist adventure backpacks.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1398

Welcome to Throwback Thursday / “Where are they now?” where we take an in-depth look at someone who’s story has evolved considerably since we first featured them.

Today, in our latest feature, we’ll hear from one-half of a married couple who starts a side hustle selling minimalist backpacks. This is a social good business that works to reduce food insecurity in the U.S.

In the original episode (#522) we looked at how they were able to get going with a manufacturing business producing these high-quality backpacks in a range of colors and styles for just $4,000.

It’s been more than two years since we profiled them—and a lot has happened! Let’s hear directly from them. I’ll be back at the end to wrap us up.

Listen to today’s episode to hear Kelly’s updates…

Q&A: 2020 has been overwhelming. What’s the outlook for next year?

What It’s About

2020 has been quite the year! A listener wants to know what we can expect from 2021.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1397

I try to stay away from predictions … I’m not very good at it. I was once quoted in a major publication saying that podcasts were a brief trend that would disappear soon. (Oops! Sorry about that.)

But I thought a lot about this listener’s question, and I think I have a decent answer to it.

Our listener has noticed that 2020 has been a ridiculous year. Did you notice too? Well, he’s wondering what comes next, at least in terms of opportunities and trends that this whole thing will continue to produce going into the new year.

“Hi Chris, this is Jared from Portland and I’ve been following your projects for many years and have previously attended the World Domination Summit. I don’t need to tell you how ridiculous this year has been in so many ways. We’re all living it! At the beginning of all of this, I heard you say a few times that disruption presents opportunity.

Aside from investing in Zoom or hand sanitizer at the beginning of the year, what can we do now? What’s the outlook for 2021? I’m not asking for your public health predictions, just wondering if there’s something you’ve noticed that will be a new opportunity for side hustlers in the coming year. “

Attorney Shutters Day Job In Favor Of Photography

What It’s About

A lawyer shifts her focus and achieves perfect exposure to a new career.

Words of Wisdom

Emily shares some words of encouragement: “Be smart, but don’t hold back. It’s tricky juggling a full-time job and a side hustle. I gave my self a loose goal to “someday quit and do this full time”. I was optimistic but cautious. I didn’t want to leave my secure income (living in SF is not cheap!), I wanted to make sure it was the right move.”

Fun Fact

The first color photograph was taken in 1861 and is of a colored ribbon. Compare that single photograph to today, where an estimated 100 million pictures are uploaded to Instagram everyday.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1396
It was 2017 when Emily Jenks first began to become disillusioned in her day job. On the outside, things seemed great—she was a well-paid antitrust attorney in San Francisco. But on the inside, Emily was losing her spark a little more each day. She’d often wake up and tell herself, “I’d rather die than do this for the rest of my life”… which she now admits was a little dramatic.

But these feelings are real! A lot of people have them.

Instead of quitting, she set herself a big goal. Find out what she loves to do and then figure out a way to make money from it. She then proceeded to try everything from blogging to beach body coaching, none of which panned out. In the end, a chance gift from her husband brought her passion into focus, and it happened in a flash.

He bought Emily a day-long traveling photography course for her birthday … and it turned into the best day she’d had in years. By the end of it she had what she calls a “THIS IS IT!” moment. This is what she wanted to do with her life, this is what might help her escape her day job misery and bring more happiness into her life.

She’d start a photography side hustle with the stretch goal of turning it into a full-time gig. She was so convinced this was the right next step that she immediately bought equipment, confident the money would never be wasted. After all, she already knew she loved photography so if the business side of things didn’t work out she’d still use the gear for personal enjoyment.

Still, the number one goal was to eventually quit her job as an attorney, so she had a lot of income to replace. Emily began looking for her first client and turned to Yelp for help.

Yelp is a huge platform for people to find local services and they offer an advertising product called Yelp Ads. Using those ads, Emily soon had her first client booked for a family photoshoot. The client agreed to pay her two hundred and seventy-five dollars, which seemed way overpriced given her level of experience. To feel better about charging so much, Emily quickly set out to increase her skills.

Emily hasn’t once regretted the decision to leave the workforce behind. Her business has only grown. Now, in addition to family portraits, she does wedding photography and elopements, often bringing in upwards of twenty thousand per month.

Finding the link between your passion and the marketplace may not be a snap, but with the right motivation and continued work everything comes into focus.

Q&A: Should I pay a publicist to book me as a podcast guest?

What It’s About

A publicist promises to book this listener as a guest on popular podcasts. Is this a good idea?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1395

What we’re all trying to accomplish, one way or another: we want to reach people (the right people) with our work. And so because there is no single best way to do that, most of us tend to flounder a bit. We try a lot of different things. We might look for miracle cures, like if a publicist or company promises to open the right doors and magically get us on The Today Show or the TED stage.

Well, today’s caller is trying to build her brand as a lifestyle coach. Should she hire a publicist to book her as a guest on podcasts?

I have a clear answer! And since it’s not a favorable one, I also have an suggestion.

“Hi Chris, this is Bailey from Austin and I’ve been listening to the show from episode #1. Thanks to you and the team for the great content. I’m trying to build my brand as a health and lifestyle coach, and a friend suggested I appear on podcasts to gain followers and influence. How would I go about doing this?

No one really knows me yet. I did some searching and saw that I could hire a publicist to pitch me to various shows as an expert, but it’s expensive and I don’t have a big budget. Do you think this would be worth it? If not, what else should I try? Thanks Chris and I’m looking forward to hearing from you.”

“Decision Coach” Makes Money By Making Decisions

What It’s About

A writer decides to use her superpower to help others make decisions.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Nell has some great advice for those looking to get involved in the coaching industry. She says, “Coaching is a completely unregulated industry. Taking a coaching course to get “qualified” is pretty much meaningless. Don’t waste time on it. Just figure out what you’re really, really good at, and start doing it.”

Fun Fact

Nell has helped people with all kinds of big decisions, from career direction to moving to a different city, to even topics like leaving relationships and having children!

Notes from Chris

Episode 1394
Nell Wulfhart has always been the person her friends and family have gone to when they need help making decisions. Throughout her life and different circles of acquaintances, she was known as the one who gave the best, most clear and most straightforward advice. Nell says that this ability to make fast, good decisions is responsible for 90% of her success as a freelance writer.

About five years ago, she started to realize that other people outside of her friends and family could benefit from her skills. She made up her mind to start her own coaching business that offered only one service: working with someone on a decision they are stuck on and guiding them to a place where they knew what they should do. Nell knew she was great at giving advice, and she wanted to help people get unstuck from the endless thought loops of indecision.

She called her idea Decide and Move Forward, and launched with a four-page website that was created for free by a friend. The only startup cost she had was paying for Squarespace, which cost about $80 per year.

At first, most of her clients found her from her freelance work. Nell writes a column on a career website about making decisions. This was a great business model for her. She was writing to her target audience for her coaching business and easily transferring the audience from one job to the other. That way, she made money from writing the articles and sometimes even more money from directing them to her service. Not only that, but when potential clients discovered her by finding her as a column writer, Nell also had built-in credibility.

To this day, this success has been without doing any promotion besides writing the column. As it turns out, a lot of people Google the question, “How do I make a decision?” and end up on her website. In just one session Nell can help shake people out of a cycle of indecision, and launch them on a new path forward.

Nell has big plans for Decide and Move Forward, though. She is about to meet a book deadline in February and when that happens, she is planning to spend time trying to grow her service.

Q&A: How can I use my degree with my side hustle?

What It’s About

A listener wants to utilize his degree to demonstrate authority in the world of performance coaching.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1393

Today’s caller comes to us from the U.K. He will be graduating with a degree in sport and exercise science and is wondering about how to use this to his advantage in marketing a coaching service.

In some parts of the traditional world of employment, it’s pretty clear what benefits a college degree conveys. It might be required to get a job at certain companies or in certain industries. If nothing else, it gets you in the door for an interview.

Of course, in the world of self-employment, the benefits are less clear. Your education may still be highly valuable and even critical, but those benefits are not conveyed automatically the way they might be if you follow a more traditional path.

So how do you then put that education on display in a relevant manner to improve your marketing and help you attract clients in the coaching space?

“Hi, Chris. My name is Jacob and I’m from the UK. I listened to the show for a few months now. My side hustle is I want to be a nutrition and performance coach. It’s my question for you is how can you use a degree or qualification to your advantage while running a side hustle in a year’s time? I will, of course, sport and exercise science degree, but I feel this may all go to waste if I end up working for myself and not working for another employer. I just wondered how I might be able to use this kind of qualification to my advantage and how to make an impact in a highly competitive industry where no one really knows about you. “

Q&A: How can I produce in-person experiences when people are afraid?

What It’s About

A listener wonders how they can safely host in-person events during a pandemic.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1392

One of the many consequences of the pandemic is that a lot of people are afraid. Some fear is rational, and some is irrational.

When it comes to events, planning and marketing them is extremely complex. After all, an outdoor wedding with 30 people is different from a stadium concert with 10,000 people.

So if you’re producing a safety-conscious event, how can you market it in a way that overcomes the fear many people have during the pandemic?

“Hi Chris, this is Kevin from Pullman and I’ve been listening to the show for a couple of years now. Thanks for the helpful advice. Speaking of which, How can I produce in-person experiences when people are afraid?

A friend and I are hoping to host a ghost tour. We live in a college town that has lots of historical secrets, and these tours are popular elsewhere but there’s not one in our area. Of course, the elephant in the room is … how can we get people to come to an in-person tour these days, or even in the near future?

We think we can do this safely, with small groups where everyone wears a mask, but I know a lot of events are on hold indefinitely. Meanwhile, you have other people who don’t believe the virus is real, and they’re happy to show up and do anything—but I’m not necessarily trying to cater to those people either. How should we handle this situation? Is it just a bad idea to think about it now? Thanks and I look forward to what you have to say.”

TBT: Physician Designs Plush Toys to Teach Anatomy

What It’s About

An update from a doctor who teaches human anatomy through plush toys.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1391

Welcome to Throwback Thursday / “Where are they now?” where we take an in-depth look at someone who’s story has evolved considerably since we first featured them.

Throughout this year in more than 30 of these stories so far, we’ve had everything from a New York City musician with a blog teaching jazz that becomes a multiple six-figure business and an Australian woman who draws houses. Last week was about a wedding florist in Oklahoma who offers DIY wedding flowers to brides across the country.

Today, in our latest feature, we’ll hear from a physician who designs and manufactures plush toys in the shape of human organs. They are used to teach kids about the human body, and as “get well soon” gifts for hospital patients. It is one of those unique businesses that I never would have heard of without starting Side Hustle School. It’s called Nerdbugs:, and we first featured her back in Episode #634.

Listen to today’s episode to hear Dr. Ronak’s updates…

MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:

  • Nerdbugs: Your heart will beat a little faster when you head over to Ronak’s website to check out these adorably punny plush toys!
  • Shopify: Ronak used Shopify to setup the website for Nerdbugs, and they’re offering a 21-day trial and exclusive discount for all Side Hustle School listeners!
