Q&A: How about a directory of garage and yard sales?

What It’s About

Has today’s caller uncovered a hidden treasure of a reselling idea?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1530

Today’s caller has an idea to create a directory of garage and yard sales. She thinks it’s a winner because so many people are trying to buy and resell items.

What’s the best way to proceed?

“Everyone has stuff to sell, and I’ve learned a lot from the show about where to find sources I can use for my eBay and Poshmark reselling hustle. I’m thinking there could be a lot of value in creating a dynamic directory of garage and yard sales in any particular area. The data could come from sites like Craigslist, and we could use Google Maps to populate all the different sales that are happening in upcoming days. What factors should I consider in designing and making the app—and could I charge for it directly or make it free and hope to monetize through ads?”

Bikini Lover Finds Sea of Opportunity

What It’s About

An Amazon product manager takes the plunge and starts a swimwear line.

Words of Wisdom

Jessica shares some important advice about facing challenges along the way, “so many people get intimidated by the fact that there’s so much to do and so much you don’t know how to do, like building a website or filing taxes. You can either get overwhelmed by this, or you can figure it out as you go.”

Fun Fact

U.S. retail sales of swimwear were approximately $3.6 billion when Instagram launched in 2010. They rose to $4.6 billion last year in 2018. That’s a lot of swimsuits! [CNBC – Source]

Notes from Chris

Episode 1529
Jessica Reed was bored.

She had an unloved, underpaid nine-to-five job and knew she could achieve so much more. The challenge was figuring out what exactly that would be.

She began to brainstorm about the things she enjoyed, such as water skiing and going to the beach, and a problem associated with them, like not being able to find the perfect swimsuit. This was in early 2018, and as she continued to think about what she wanted to do, she stumbled upon a story about a young woman from Australia who started a swimwear brand.

As she read the article, Jessica realized how similar she was to that Australian. They both had very little capital available and shared a love for sunshine, the beach, and swimsuits. And since Jessica had yet to find a swimsuit she personally loved, she figured it would be a perfect opportunity to create her own.

Jessica launched Seattle-based Ballard Bikini with an investment of $493, which she used to purchase her first swimwear samples. Though she doesn’t have a design background, her manufacturer allowed her to sketch out ideas on paper and send them over for feedback. She included the preferred measurements, colors or prints. From there, the manufacturer makes samples of the pieces. Once Jessica approves, she places a bulk order.

Jessica worked on getting her website up and running, and commissioned a logo from her cousin. She placed a bulk order that totaled a little more than $4,000 for her first launch, but here’s a key point: she did a pre-sale in order to cover the cost of the order, during which she made about $1,200 over the course of six weeks.

Looking to the future, Jessica hopes to launch a YouTube channel focused on sharing tips for starting a business and building wealth. In the long term, she would love to publish a book.

Q&A: Should I start a podcast OR YouTube channel?

What It’s About

Today’s caller faces the age-old challenge … should they start a podcast or YouTube channel?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1528

Welcome to a new week!

If you want to teach what you know, do you begin your search with the idea of a topic or a format? In other words, do you say I want to start a podcast… what should my podcast be about?

Or do you say, I want to teach people about scuba diving or backgammon or programming Python or … any other topic? That might be better, but you’ll still end up at the other decision one way or another.

In other words, you have to make both decisions: topic and format.

A listener is trying to decide between a podcast or YouTube channel. What are the pros and cons of each, and how can they make the best decision?

“Hi Chris this is Grace and I’ve been following your work for a couple of year. Thanks to you and your team for the helpful content. After a rough 2020, I have some time on my hands and I’m committed to starting a new project this year. I’m torn and I’d like you to settle this internal debate: Should I start a podcast OR YouTube channel? Which is better for me right now? I know I could record the podcast and then upload a version to YouTube, but if I did a YouTube channel I’d want to do it properly, with content that was designed with video in mind from the ground up. So in other words, it really is one or the other. Which would you pick, or better yet, how would you decide? Thanks again for your help. “

To Find Freelance Work, Look at Full-Time Job Listings

What It’s About

A social media strategist finds success promoting his work through social networks.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Damion shares an important piece of advice about pricing your services, “If I could go back, I think I would have started off charging more in order to better communicate the value of the expertise I was offering.”

Fun Fact

When it comes to online retail, Amazon is king and ships over 45 million products around the world. According to Investopedia, other options for the company’s name included “Cadabra” (as in “Abracadabra”) and “Relentless”. His lawyer convinced founder and CEO Jeff Bezos that “Cadabra” sounded too much like “cadaver”. And although “Relentless” didn’t make the cut, Bezos bought the domain name relentless.com, which now redirects to the Amazon homepage.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1527
Damion Taylor began his social media career after joining a startup that was one of the first YouTube multi-channel networks. He was responsible for tracking data and setting strategies across YouTube and other channels to grow the company’s audience.

But unfortunately, the company shifted its strategic direction … and he was let go. Damion took on freelance contract work in the meantime while looking for a new job. As it so happened, he was quickly hired by another startup but something had changed—now he wanted to make sure he wouldn’t worry if he ever lost his job again.

In 2019, a post on the Next Door app caught Damion’s eye. A local business was looking for someone to manage their Instagram and Facebook pages. This was right up his alley and it turned out that all they required was for someone to post content they already had.

Damion applied for the gig, and he received a reply almost immediately. For $500 a month, he would manage the business’ social accounts. It was shaping up to be a standard freelance contract until Damion blurted out that he would offer her a $100 discount/month for every client referral she sent his way. He doesn’t remember why he made such an offer then since he didn’t need to, but it turned out to be a career-changing offer.

The client was so impressed with his first month of work that she immediately spread the word to her friends, earning her several referral discounts. By the third month of their arrangement, she had sent Damion two clients his way, bringing his earnings from his side gig to $1,200/month. This was quite a sum of money considering that he didn’t have to dedicate much time to the effort.

Word of mouth and LinkedIn outreach sounds simple, but in Damion’s case, it worked to perfection. Within 9 months, he had gained enough clients that he had crossed the $10k/month milestone that he’d been striving for. This was enough for him to go full-time since it not only covered his expenses, but also allowed him to grow his savings.

Of course, you’d also have to keep up with the latest developments since social media is an evolving space—Damion has had to pick up TikTok and Pinterest lately even though he started out only with just Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. But the reward is worth it, because now he can’t be fired.

Q&A: Get paid to help brands with their Terms & Conditions?

What It’s About

Today’s caller wants to help businesses with their fine print.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1526

You know how whenever you want to install an app, you have to agree to a lengthy list of Terms & Conditions before doing so? And you know how you never really read them, because what’s the point?

Today’s caller wants to help brands improve their Terms & Conditions, also known as T&C. Can she design and license a template that companies will pay for?

I’m all about solving practical problems … but you also have to ask what problem does this solve?

Hi this is Jackie and I’m a long-time listener, first-time caller. I’d like to help brands simplify their Terms & Conditions. No one ever reads those long pages of text that we’re required to approve before downloading an app or joining a website. My idea is to make a series of templates that cover any important legal clauses but written in a way that makes sense to regular people. I will license the templates to companies for an annual fee, agreeing to make any reasonable number of updates a couple of times a year. What do you think about this idea, and how can I market it? Looking forward to hearing from you.

Failure Friday: “A $300 mistake cost me $100,000”

What It’s About

The worst part of waking up… is finding out you’re being sued.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1525

I believe we can learn as much from failure as we can from success, if not more. It’s with this principle in mind that we’re starting Failure Friday, a collection of short stories all about mistakes, missteps, disasters, and of course, failure.

Just like our Throwback Thursday segment, you’ll hear directly from side hustlers who have struggled to get something off the ground. They’ll tell you a short story of something that went very wrong.

The stories will vary, but often it starts with an idea, what they thought would happen and what really happened—and of course, what they learned.

I applaud their courage! I’ll share some of my failure stories along the way as well.

Today’s short story features Joel Runyon from Austin, Texas. He is no stranger to Side Hustle School listeners, as well as anyone who’s been following my work for a long time. At the first WDS, Joel took a group skydiving.

He’s not afraid to take risks, but as you’ll hear in this story, there’s one risk he shouldn’t have taken—or perhaps you could say he should have taken a small risk to pay a small amount of money.

Q&A: Where should I direct my Pinterest traffic?

What It’s About

Today’s caller seeks advice on where to send visitors from Pinterest.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1523

A listener is interested in Go Imagine, a new online marketplace that donates profits to charity.

She’s getting attention from her Pinterest pins and wants to know where to direct traffic—to the new marketplace, or somewhere classic like Etsy?

Hi, Chris, I’m Kim from Pennsylvania. I discovered the podcast a couple of months ago, and I’ve spent every morning since with you. I look forward to the 15 minutes of motivation on my commute, and I’ve learned a lot. So thank you. I’m hoping you can help me start today with a little insight. My goal for the New Year is to increase traffic to my business through social media. I’ve chosen to start by focusing on Pinterest, but I’m not sure how to best direct my efforts. I have an established Etsy shop that does well and I also just began listing my items on a new online marketplace Go Imagine.

I have high hopes for the new site. I love its concept as a caring marketplace that donates its profits to charity. I really think it’s going to grow, but it’s just not there yet. Since I can only add one URL to each pin, which site would you advise? I drive traffic to Etsy or Go Imagine. Or should I split my attention between them? Thank you. I really value your opinion and I would appreciate your help with this next.

Student Makes Selling Sneakers Look Yeezy

What It’s About

A student and his sneakerhead friend take steps to find and resell rare kicks.

Words of Wisdom

Sebastian shares some encouraging words, “When you start anything, you won’t know all the steps on the journey beforehand, but that’s fine. All you have to know is the first step, and when you get past the first step, you figure out the next step, and so on.”

Fun Fact

In the early days of his side hustle, Sebastian convinced his dad to loan him two thousand euros to purchase a ‘sure thing’ clothing product he believed he’d make a good profit reselling. Unfortunately, that sure thing turned out to be anything but and nearly two years later still hasn’t sold.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1522
Sebastian Ringlstetter was studying business at university when he decided to actually start a business. As he was hanging out with a friend one day, the perfect concept happened to sneaker up on him.

This friend was a sneakerhead! A collector of vintage and rare sneakers, some of which happened to be worth a lot of money. You see, not all sneakers are created equal and companies like Nike and Adidas occasionally sell what they call Limited Release product lines. These sneakers are produced in limited quantities and often sell out in hours, if not minutes.

Sebastian learned that many sneakerheads stay on top of the Limited Release schedule and often buy additional pairs to resell to those who weren’t able, or couldn’t be bothered, to fight for them. His friend explained that he often made fifty euros or more per pair with this method of reselling. Sebastian asked if he could fund the next pair. He wanted to explore the possibility of lacing up together.

With one hundred and fifty euros in hand, the two set out the next weekend and bought a pair of new release Jordan Retro sneakers. Within a month they’d flipped them for a tidy profit. Sebastian was hooked! He saw an instant return on investment and stepped up to do it again.

They soon bought more sneakers and also came up with a name for their venture. That name was … Drip Drops, since they’d slowly drip the sneakers out to collectors after they dropped. They used the name to create an Instagram account, but that was the only real marketing activity they did.

It wasn’t uncommon for him to walk into a store, be asked what size he was looking for to which he’d respond, “all the sizes” and walk out with ten to twenty pairs. The higher volume boosted their revenues and at this point, they are on track to earn over four hundred thousand dollars in revenue for the year, with one hundred thousand of that being profit.

But Sebastian isn’t resting on his laurels. With those profits, he intends to move into new categories and target other luxury items such as watches and handbags. There’s also the hope of opening up a retail store sometime in 2021, if the pandemic settles down and allows it.

All this has come at the perfect time as Sebastian is about to graduate from university. He’ll have plenty more time to put boots on the ground.

Q&A: How can I create a cloud service consulting business?

What It’s About

Today’s caller has an interesting business idea … but is his head in the clouds?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1521

How many online services do you pay for? Just imagine what a small or medium-sized company pays, especially since a lot of these services have scalable pricing … the more you use them, the more you pay.

Our listener today has the responsibility of monitoring this budget item for his employer. This skill is valuable, especially as more and more services operate on a recurring payment model. He’s wondering what he can do to monetize it outside his job.

I like this idea! It’s an interesting example of a function that wasn’t needed before, and so therefore it’s not clear at a lot of organizations who’s supposed to be paying attention to it. Let’s see what can be done.

Hi, Chris, my name is Darryl and I live in Brooklyn, New York. I enjoy your podcast and I’ve been a listener since you are one hundred Side hustle book. I work as a software engineer at a small company. One of my responsibilities is to review the monthly bills of the cloud services we use for our online infrastructure. I audit them and provide advice on whether to keep upgrade or downgrade services or switch to competing products.

My question is, what’s the best way to start a side hustle that provides this type of advice on cloud services for other businesses? There’s lots of competition between providers of their cloud services and keeping up with their offerings is a lot of work. How can I get businesses to trust me if I don’t have much experience doing this outside of my current employer? Thanks for the show and any advice you can give on this topic?
