Q&A: Can I import rain barrels from the Netherlands?

What It’s About

Today’s caller wants to make it rain … with rain barrels.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1778

In 1,700+ episodes we’ve never looked at this topic before—nor did I know what they were. The topic is rain barrels!

You’re learning along with me! Unless you are a rain barrel expert, in which case you know a lot more than me.

It reminds me a little of bat houses, which we featured in a story a couple of years ago. Let’s see if we can help out this listener who’s wondering about importing this item (rain barrels, not bat houses) from the Netherlands.

“Hi, this is Katie from Omaha, Nebraska. I’m thinking about starting a side hustle involving rain barrels. I found a rain barrel that I love, but it’s made in the Netherlands. And they told me that they don’t sell in the United States. Should I try to find a way to partner with this company to distribute these rain barrels? Or would it be better to find a manufacturer myself and distribute it? Thank you.”

Failure Friday: “No one wanted a bat house during the pandemic…”

What It’s About

A batty situation causes this hustler to pivot quickly.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1777

I believe we can learn as much from failure as we can from success, if not more. It’s with this principle in mind that I offer you a weekly segment called Failure Friday: a collection of short stories all about mistakes, missteps, disasters, and of course, failure.

Just like our Throwback Thursday segment, you’ll hear directly from side hustlers who have struggled to get something off the ground. They’ll tell you a short story of something that went very wrong.

The stories will vary, but often it starts with an idea, what they thought would happen and what really happened—and of course, what they learned.

Today’s short story features Steve Barlow from Florida. We told the successful story of his Big Bat House project on Episode #909: Revenge of Bat Houses: There’s More Than One Seller!

But a funny thing happened at the start of the pandemic… no one wanted to buy a bat house anymore!

Q&A: Best platform to host an online course?

What It’s About

Today’s listener wants to launch their own course. What should they know?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1775

Simple but important question: what’s the best platform to host an online course?

I’ve been working on an online course that’s different from any I’ve made before, so I’ve done a lot of research myself. I’m going to give you a clear recommendation!

“After listening to Side Hustle School for a while, I’m ready to create an online course. You’ve had a lot of episodes and stories about people who’ve done that, and I’m wondering: out of everything you’ve heard, what do you think is the best third-party platform to host the course? I don’t mean a company like Udacity that sells courses that other creators make, I mean one of the ones that lets you host your own and keep all the money that comes in.”

Consignment Sale Secrets: Ask to Sell Your Grandma’s Stuff

What It’s About

“We are family!” A reseller stocks his reselling inventory utilizing family and friends.

Words of Wisdom

Thinking about reselling? Jeremy has an important piece of advice, “Don’t have an inflated view of an item’s value or become too attached to an item.”

Fun Fact

Jeremy once sold 200 of moss covered, dirty red bricks that were originally used on a patio. He didn’t clean them up before selling them, just sold them as is.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1774
Jeremy Vanderslice and his wife were both in grad school and money was tight. Not only that, but there was also debt to pay. Jeremy sold off all his unwanted belongings on Facebook Marketplace and eBay to raise some quick cash. He was reading The $100 Startup at the time and looking for a way he could continue to make some extra money on the side … but just as I discovered more than twenty years ago, he soon ran out of unused household items to sell.

That was his point of inspiration… what do you do when you want to have your own business, but you hate taking risks? You sell other people’s stuff for them, and you split the profits!

Before long, at least twice a month people were dropping off carloads of stuff for him to sell. Jeremy typically splits the money 50/50 with the owner but he’ll sometimes lower his fee to 30% for more expensive items.

At this point in the business, he doesn’t say no to selling an item, even if it will only give him 3 or 4 dollars… he figures it takes just a minute or two to shoot some pictures and post the ad online. The dollars add up. Even better, after he’s established a relationship with an owner, they’ll often bring him a higher ticket item to sell that will make him a hundred dollars or more in no time. It’s all about building trust.

Jeremy typically works with three or four sellers at a time because he has only so much storage space in his basement. Using this strategy, he’s earned as much as $1,500 in a month, all in a small amount of spare time. Fortunately, this business gives you the freedom to grow. If you have more space or you want to earn more money you can sell for more people.

He recommends starting out by going through your own house and selling things you don’t need, then moving on to friends and family who are moving or decluttering—especially parents or grandparents who’ve collected a lot of stuff over the years. Tell them how well you’ve done selling your own stuff and when they say they don’t have time to do that—offer to sell their items for them and split the money!

The extra income has minimized Jeremy’s financial fears and has allowed him to take a few more chances in life. For example, it’s given him the financial confidence to invest in stocks, something that seemed risky before. Also, his wife wanted to leave her job and start her own private practice as a Speech Language Therapist. Jeremy’s new revenue stream has helped them take the leap and get her business off the ground as well.

Q&A: I launched my site and nothing happened!

What It’s About

Today’s caller took the first step. Now what?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1773

By now, you know how it works: you open a business and get tons of money! Your biggest problem is finding a big enough wheelbarrow to fit all the cash in to take to the bank. And then there are the taxes—it’s really frustrating to make so much money that you have to pay a percentage of it in exchange for roads, education, fire services, and so on.

Well, of course, it’s not always—if ever—so simple. Today’s listener is experiencing a more common problem: he makes a website with something for sale, opens the cart for business, and no one buys.

In other words, he doesn’t need that wheelbarrow full of cash just yet. How can we help him?

“Often we hear stories of someone who opens for business and they get a flood of customers—so many that they can’t keep up with demand. That’s awesome … but it also hasn’t been my experience. I spent a lot of time building a website, and when it was ready I posted a link to it on my Facebook page. A couple of people commented or liked the post, but otherwise nothing happened. I know I need to do more marketing, but it just feels discouraging that I didn’t have a better response right out of the gate. Is this common? Have you ever experienced it?”

Toronto Songwriting School Harmonizes During Pandemic

What It’s About

When the pandemic hits, this duo switches keys and takes their classes online.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Mary suggests that if you go into business to start a side hustle, you need to pick a partner who has complementary skills and be comfortable letting them do their own thing. Their company has grown into what it is today because they’ve allowed each other to shine in their respective roles.

Also, Mary highlighted the importance of supporting their community. Their network of students, teachers, and business partners was critical to weathering the worst parts of the pandemic, and they continue to be a big family to this day. If your community can rely on you, they’ll be there for you as well.

Fun Fact

The Toronto Songwriting School loves a little bit of competition, so they’re running multiple songwriting competitions per year to test your skills! All you have to do is sing into your phone and submit a $5 app fee to win it all.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1772
Musician and songwriter Murray Foster performed in the Canadian folk-rock band Great Big Sea for over a decade before the group called it quits in 2013. But Murray wasn’t quite ready to retire from his love of songwriting just because the other guys decided to move on to different things in their lives.

An idea dawned on him to monetize his passion by creating a songwriting course in the Toronto area. Even though he didn’t know much about marketing or building a business, this musician was pretty upbeat about keeping the dream alive.

He reached out to his friend Mary Krause, and they went into the project together. What project? The Toronto Songwriting School.

You know where this is going … right? COVID-19 was just starting to gain momentum. Getaway guests were still innocently sharing meals, drinks, and microphones as if life was totally normal.

Within just two weeks, they’d have to completely cancel in-person classes and fully pivot how the Toronto Songwriting School operated on a daily basis.

So what would they do? They wanted to keep their tight-knit community of students together, so they started by hosting free Sunday night song circles while developing a longer-term strategy. Each week, their students would come together, share a song or two (online!), and they’d close with a check-in to make sure the small group was doing okay with everything happening around the world.

Like the rest of us, they hoped the change would be short-lived. But as Canada continued to shut down, it became pretty clear that they’d need to adjust their courses to become online-only.

We all know that feeling of hopping on a Zoom call where everyone talks over one another. Well, how about trying to sing in harmony with one another!? The difficulty level of getting multiple singers to harmonize with each other over video chat has been … off the scale!

Still, they persevered, and their side hustle is now bringing in around $2,500 in profits each month, part-time.

Mary continues to work at her full-time healthcare social media job. Meanwhile, Murray stays busy with various artistic pursuits, such as teaching at a local college and writing musical theater.

Q&A: Idea for a “road trip kit” that sells at gift shops

What It’s About

Today’s caller has a unique idea for road travelers. Should they hit the road with this idea?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1771

A listener has a cool idea: they want to sell a road trip kit. I’ll let them explain more in their question. But first—would you like to ask a question?

This is also an opportunity for you to share your business. I often mention listener’s websites and social handles. Give us an interesting question and we will gladly promote you.

I just know that someone out there wants to share their idea, but has been holding back—if that’s you, you’re the person I’m thinking of.

“My idea is a “road trip kit” that combines a few helpful and fun items in a box that sells at truck stops and gift shops. You’d get a compass, an old-school atlas of U.S. road maps, an air freshener, and maybe some snacks that you can’t find at the average store. I know that people don’t need a compass or paper maps to drive these days, but the idea is that it’s a cool gift or even just a nice thing to buy for yourself. I might even include a mixtape if I can figure out how to make them … maybe cassette players will make a comeback. What are your thoughts on this idea?”
