Have you ever been ghosted? It’s not pleasant. You think you’re really connecting with someone, and then suddenly they stop returning your messages! You think, surely something must be wrong with their phone or their inbox … and why are the police coming to my house to tell me to stay away from them? This is all so awkward.

Well, let’s leave the relationship advice to someone more qualified than me. Today in Side Hustle School, a designer is having this problem with her client … or actually, her almost client, as you’ll hear. Aside from calling with a burner phone in hopes the client might pick up, is there anything that can be done?

“I’m a new designer who’s been doing freelance work for the past few months. Some of the experiences have been great, but something happened recently that’s been bothering me. I had a client ready to sign a contract for a good amount of work, but they wanted to see some sample ideas first. I put a few hours into the project and sent them over. The client said they liked them and would get back to me in a day or two to move forward, but then they disappeared. I’ve tried following up multiple times but haven’t received any response. I feel like I’ve been ghosted! Did I do this work for nothing—and should I not have sent them my initial ideas before the project officially started?”

I believe we can learn as much from failure as we can from success, if not more. It’s with this principle in mind that I offer you a weekly segment called Failure Friday: a collection of short stories all about mistakes, missteps, disasters, and of course, failure.

Just like our Throwback Thursday segment, you’ll hear directly from side hustlers who have struggled to get something off the ground. They’ll tell you a short story of something that went very wrong.

The stories will vary, but often it starts with an idea, what they thought would happen and what really happened—and of course, what they learned.

Today’s short story features Paige McInnes from Australia. She’s the owner of Little Change Creators, an ecommerce business offering ”mindful toys and gifts to make a difference.”

Following a rebrand, Paige thought it would be a good idea to pay some Instagram influencers to post about her products. Guess what? It didn’t work so well.

We’re talking about those crazy things people are buying for large amounts of money online—digital images that are non-fungible. This is a topic some of us are still getting our heads around.

Today’s caller wants to know: can you really right-click and save someone else’s NFT to your computer? That same thing they paid tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars for? (Or if they’re Justin Bieber, $1.3M?)

If you can do this, can you then sell it yourself? I love the thinking!

“Everyone knows that NFTs are just digital art, and there’s no way to make them truly exclusive. After all, anyone can right-click and save an image to their computer. Yet many of them are selling for tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars! So what’s different about the version that people are buying and the one that you or I could save to our computer—why is there so much interest around them? Also, is it possible for anyone else to sell the NFTs? I’m thinking it can’t be that easy… but I don’t know what’s stopping them.”

Travel Membership Program Earns $300,000/Year

Lyn share’s important advice about where to spend your energy: “Focus on one thing and keep tweaking it until it works. It turns out there’s a way to make almost anything work! I would try one thing, give up, try something else, etc. And be persistent. It’s those of us who don’t give up who are ultimately successful.”

Fun Fact

Families Fly Free isn’t Lyn’s first side hustle. In fact, she’s had a company doing social media research for law firms, travel writing, travel public relations, paid blogging and more!

In 2015, Lyn Mettler was working as a travel writer for outlets like U.S. News & World Report and The TODAY Show. One day, she received a pitch about a couple who were flying around the world using miles and points they’d collected in ways other than flying. As a self-described spendthrift and frugal couponer, she was intrigued.

Lyn investigated the couple’s techniques for herself, experimenting with them on her family of four. She tried different strategies and eventually patched together her own process that allowed them to fly six times a year using miles and points. It was life-changing. The family went from road trips to flying around the U.S., Caribbean and Europe, all within a year. Inspired, Lyn decided to show other families exactly how to do it.

Inspired by membership programs she followed in other spaces, Lyn created the Families Fly Free membership program. It gives members access to all of the content she’d created in one place. She also works with members 1-on-1 on Zoom to show them her process and craft a plan specifically for their family. But the membership didn’t take off right away. Why not? As she explains it, she wasn’t being disruptive enough and didn’t have full confidence in what she was selling. In other words, Families Fly Free was flying under the radar.

During the pandemic, Lyn got an SBA loan and hired a business coach she’d worked with in a group setting. The coach affirmed that her product had value and helped hone her marketing and raise her prices. In fact, the price went from $199/year to $1,295, and that’s when the program finally caught some tailwinds!

Lyn says raising the price is the best thing she could have done. People finally valued the membership, and because they invested in it, they actually took the time to follow her advice. Members can save $3,000-$5,000 in just a few months following Lyn’s process and recommendations. That benefit led to powerful testimonials and word-of-mouth marketing.

These steps solved the crucial problem of monetization. In 2021, Lyn’s side hustle grew into a full-time hustle generating $300,000.

In the future, she aims to grow the membership to $1 million and help as many families as she possibly can. She’s also adding more features to the membership and continuing to grow her team. The sky’s the limit!

Today’s episode is part of a new feature we’re doing in 2022 called ‘Your First $1,000.’ As you might surmise from the title, this is all about how someone made their first $1,000.

How did they get to that point? Not their first $100,000—that’s cool, but it would probably be a long story.

One thing I’ve learned is that once you begin to earn real money, the steps required to go to the next level—whether it’s $1,000 to $2,000, or even to $5,000 or $10,000 are often easier than that first real paycheck.

With that in mind, today’s feature comes from Josh Strawczynski. We first featured his remote Airbnb rental empire back on Episode #1506, where he learned to operate a series of Airbnbs in Australia while he was living in the Caribbean.

You know how it goes: you have way too much money. Right? Isn’t that why you listen to this podcast? Too much money to keep up with, too many sales, customers, and clients. You just want to turn it all sometimes!

Okay, most of the time that’s not the problem. For today’s caller, part of it is the problem—not necessarily too much money, but too many inquiries. Their business is going well (yay!) but like all of us, there’s only so much they can do.

“I have a different sort of problem than most people who struggle to get off the ground: my business is going so well that I’m feeling overwhelmed with the work. I started offering interior design services earlier this year, and I’m now booked up for the next two months. Almost every day there’s a new inquiry, and each project takes at least a couple of days. Is it time to raise my prices? I’m worried that if I do, it will all come crashing down. At the same time, I’m also worried that I’ll never catch up if I don’t do something. What do you think?”

If you want to retain what you read, you need to have some kind of system to review and reinforce your learning. I got really into this last year and learned about spaced repetition, which is the idea of regularly reviewing key information to make sure you actually know it.

Today’s listener has an intriguing idea: to aid in memory retention using spaced repetition but with outsourced tutors from other countries. It’s kind of like Upwork meets Coursera or Udemy.

“If you want to learn something, spaced repetition is the single most important habit you can use. It’s essentially the flash card technique, where you review a series of items over and over until you’re confident you’ve retained the info. Ideally, you vary the times that you do the review, and once you finish a particular deck, you return to it every so often just for a refresher. Anyway, here’s my side hustle idea: I’d like to use overseas tutors to help people with flash study sessions using this technique. It’s a lot like learning Spanish or another language with a foreign speaker by video call. Didn’t you have a story about that once? My question is: how would I validate the need for this idea, and how could I put together a working model?”

Today’s short story offers an important lesson about product market fit. It features Dale Wilson. We told the story of his livestream wedding business on Episode #1669. He operates that together with his wife Lydia.

When Covid struck, they thought “surely what we do for weddings will be applicable to other markets.” It sounds reasonable! If you had asked me, I’d say, yep, makes sense.

But of course that’s not how it always goes. You don’t just need a good idea; you need the right buyer. Dale will bring us the whole story.
