The Mystical Solution to Modern Love (and Money)

What It’s About

A renaissance man shares relationship advice based on the Kabbalah.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Devin said that getting into coaching is a great opportunity but only if you have the right temperament and lots of experience dealing with human nature. It’s rarely about dispensing advice or directives. It’s more about asking the right questions.

Fun Fact

Devin’s been putting together a writing series and a new book called Ceremoniously: My First 20 Weddings. Believe it or not, he’s on a journey to marry his wife 100 times in 100 countries. He’s on 21 so far!

Notes from Chris

Episode 745
Devin Galaudet has worn many hats throughout his working life—antique store owner, professional poker player, travel blogger, and property manager. This collection of side hustles is what’s kept him going.

He’s never embraced the “one career path” mindset. So, when Devin’s wife was speaking at an event and found himself with a small line of women wanting to speak with him about their relationship frustrations, Devin was confused but obliged.

Turns out that his wife had been talking about him. She would mention Devin in her newsletter and her social media page. She described the adventures they’d been having around the world, and the conversations she overheard Devin having with friends.

He’d been studying Western Mysteries, occultism and the Kabbalah for 25 years and been implementing what he’d learn into breaking down the differences between men and women.

That evening, Devin spoke with five women and was still confused by the whole thing. His wife offered a suggestion, “Why don’t you follow through and offer your experience as advice?” Devin’s entrepreneurial spirit kicked in.

Drawing from his experiences as a serial side hustler, Devin started with a webinar and eBook to build a list of interested prospects. This kept his startup costs low. He already owned websites and using the service WebinarJam only cost him $99 for the year. The majority of people attending his first webinar came from his wife’s event. He then transitioned to recording a weekly podcast about love.

After three months, his wife suggested doing paid classes. In Devin’s mind, it all seemed a bit ridiculous. However, there was something in this experiment that kept him from walking away. He enjoyed sharing the mysteries of the occult and using the Kabbalah as a tool to help others in the tempestuous world of love and relationships.

He didn’t know what the next step should be. So, he sent out a questionnaire to everyone who attended his webinars and those that answered became the subject of week one’s class.

The Mystical Solution to Modern Love was born.

Love and relationships is a highly personal field with no “one size fits all” approach. Devin didn’t go to school for counseling and his day job is in property management. However, he’s able to secure trust and confidence with his clients. He said if someone finds him, it’s likely they’ve been recommended through referrals, seen him on a webinar or any number of podcasts about love. So, the burden of establishing trust is already eased.

Devin’s relationship coaching earns him between $1,500 – $2,000 a month and said he’s kept this hustle going primarily through his webinars and podcasts. He said once it got going, it didn’t take him a ton of time to maintain. He said he just has to keep putting himself out there.

Photographer Visits 30 Countries, Leading Tours & Getting Paid

What It’s About

A snapshot of a photographer’s take on a second income stream.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

According to Darlene, you don’t need to do something big, but do something! Furthermore, she says that you should take an action on whatever your idea or dream is—no matter how stupid it may feel or what others may tell you.

Fun Fact

Darlene barely traveled out of the country before she was 34. Now her side hustle allows her to travel to places like Cuba, Morocco, and India, all while getting paid. Having traveled to 30 countries and counting, Darlene is using photography to get a full snapshot of life.

Notes from Chris

Episode 741

Darlene Hildebrandt has always had a passion for photography. After graduating from a 2-year program in college, she worked with other photographers and did weddings on the side. As she gained experience, she ran a portrait photo studio before working as a rep in the industry for a company.

A few years ago, Darlene longed to make a change. She still enjoyed photography, but she wanted to teach people more. She had seen how writing could influence people and thought that a blog was the best format for her.

The first few posts she published were simple. Although she had almost 20 years of experience in photography at this point, writing about photography was a different ballgame from actually taking photos. Darlene got around this difficulty by sharing an image and how it was created. Not only did this allow her to tap into her personal experience, but it also helped her build a connection with her reads by sharing her views on the subject.

She was also teaching locally, and from those classes, she got a better sense about the type of issues that beginners often struggled with. These classes thus became a source in which Darlene got her ideas from as she targeted beginners and wrote guides that would benefit them the most. The explanations in these posts were then tested in her classroom, and when Darlene saw the “aha” moment on the faces of her students, she knew that she had hit on something.

But to turn her blog, Digital Photo Mentor, into a go-to photography resource on the web, Darlene knew that she needed to do more. She had gone around learning about the best way to build her blog, and one of the methods she had learned was guest blogging. Guest blogging was a way in which a blogger would write a guest post on another site, with links directing readers on that site back to the blogger’s own blog.

This had a huge impact on Darlene’s web traffic and email list as she was put in front of a large audience with the same demographic and target that she wanted to reach. Her email list began to grow by over 1,000 members a month, with one article, in particular, going viral and netting her 1,200 signups in a single day. By the end of that year, she had 9,500 email subscribers, with this number more than doubling to over 20,000 the following year.

Today, Digital Photo Mentor has over 150,000 monthly visitors and a highly engaged email list of over 20,000 subscribers. Aside from the digital course and products that Darlene sells on the sites, Darlene has also been able to offer unique experiences with worldwide photography tours. With locations such as Cuba, Nicaragua, and Morocco, there’s rarely a dull moment when Darlene. This is one of the reasons that in 2018 she decided to go full-time and all-in on her blog.

From the tours to product sales to a whole series of new opportunities, the website and community has given her a complete snapshot of life.

Ballroom Dance Enthusiast Triples Side Income with “How-To” Guide

What It’s About

A side hustle that helps a corporate employee feel like dancing again.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

In both dance and business, Katie says that you should be prepared to work hard for whatever you’re trying to accomplish. She says that it’s important to stay true to yourself while still respecting the craft.

Fun Fact

This year Katie won the World Champion title in her ballroom dancing division. She did so in spite of not fitting the “ideal” look for a competitive ballroom dancer. She refuses to cover up her full back, tree of life, tattoo.

Notes from Chris

Episode 664

Katie Flashner needed a creative outlet. Something that helped her escape from the drudgery of her corporate day job of writing and reviewing indoor air quality testing reports. She first tried starting a homemade pastry business called “Katie’s Scones.” She soon discovered, however, that even though she loved baking for others, she didn’t love the exhausting, constant cleanup.

Then she found a new activity and passion. You could say it made her feel like dancing again. These days, after Katie leaves the office, instead of heading home, she goes to the dance studio where she spends her free time as a competitive ballroom dancer. And she doesn’t “hang up those dance shoes” after leaving the studio. She also writes about ballroom dancing, earning a side income from the sale of books and guides.

She first began blogging as a way to process all of her new experiences with dance. Her blog grew into a place where other amateur ballroom dancers could get an honest perspective from someone relatable.

She had the blog, but wasn’t sure what kind of paid product she would offer. As she discussed her options with her fellow entrepreneurs and that mentor, they kept suggesting that she teach a course or offer some kind of coaching program. She started getting swept up in the others’ enthusiasm. But Katie never had a strong urge to teach. For her, writing a guidebook was her obvious choice, because she’s a writer. Looking back, she realizes that the biggest challenge came from trying to do what she thought she was supposed to do—instead of staying true to herself.

Katie learned from her coach the concept of creating a free offer to collect an email list of potential customers and then using that list to market paid offers. She followed this model for The Solo Practice Guide for Ballroom Dancing. The guide is more than just a book to read. Katie created worksheets for dancers to record and track their practice. She also created a few videos to better demonstrate the ideas she describes in the book.

She promoted it on her blog, The Girl With The Tree Tattoo, and social media pages, and after a while, she started marketing her beta offer to that list. The beta offer was the next step—and she hadn’t even written the book yet!

To move forward, she’ll need to increase the number of prospects—people who are interested in learning about ballroom dancing, and who might be persuaded to purchase the guide. But so far, she’s been able to triple her income.

So what is in this Dancing Queen’s future? Katie is reaching out to dance shops and dance studios to partner with her so she can get her guide into as many ballroom students’ hands as possible. At this step in time, her dance card is full.

Job Recruiter Helps LinkedIn Connections with Resumes

What It’s About

A recruiter helps professionals turn a “no” into a “yes.”

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Alex went to the people he knew. As a recruiter, he was proficient at using LinkedIn—in fact, he had accumulated something like 18,000 connections over the years.

He then thought carefully about the best possible pricing, created three package options (always a good idea), and uploaded a sample resume so that people would have an idea of the value they would receive for their $200. And the results speak for themselves!

Fun Fact

At first, Alex had a hard time selling his services. He had no examples of resumes that he had created on his website, so his customers didn’t trust in his capabilities—especially because he was charging $200.

To solve this problem, Alex offered to redo one of his friend’s resumes for free, in exchange for being able to use it as a sample. After that, his business started to pick up!

Notes from Chris

Episode 663

Alex Benjamin’s life was a combination of excitement and worry. His family had recently welcomed a new baby into the world, but with each new week, his workload was beginning to get lighter and lighter. As a full-time recruiter for pharmaceutical companies, it was Alex’s responsibility to find employees for the most difficult to fill jobs. Essentially, he was a talent scout for the pharmaceutical industry.

Around that time, many of the biggest names in pharmacy all seemed to stop hiring within the period of a few months. Since Alex was paid on commission, this meant that his income took a major hit.

And with that new baby to support, the timing couldn’t have been worse. You could say it was a tough pill to swallow…

Although he was stressed, he knew that failure wasn’t an option. Rather than take the experience as a total loss, he started to read books about entrepreneurship and purpose. Through his reading, he realized that he had been living in autopilot for years. He had only been focusing on short-term goals. Suddenly, he was able to see beyond the tunneled vision he had grown so accustomed to.

Alex wasn’t sure that he wanted to be a full-blown entrepreneur, but a side hustle didn’t sound like a bad idea.

It wasn’t exactly original, but he felt confident in his ability to stand out. He was going to start a resume building business!

As a recruiter, he looked through resumes all day. He saw that even the most highly paid, well-educated professionals struggled to create resumes that were compelling and attractive. And these were people in the medical field with six-figure incomes! Sometimes even the pharmaceutical writers had resumes riddled with grammatical errors and inconsistent formatting.

But Alex could help! He knew the ins and outs of resume writing and what attracted employers like the back of his hand. After all, it was his full-time job to hire people.

To start, he did a lot of research on LinkedIn to see what his competition was charging. Many of them offered packages in the $100-200 range, but a lot of them also offered larger packages at $500. He didn’t feel that many of the “bonus services” offered in those packages were what people would really value, so he wanted to keep his services in that lower range.

The writing on the wall was crisp, clear, and in 12 pt. Times New Roman—Recruiter Written was ready for business!

He created a website using Weebly and focused on offering a few different options:

1) a professionally written resume for $179.

2) a professionally written resume and a LinkedIn profile complete with keyword optimization for $299.

3) a professionally written resume, a LinkedIn profile complete with keyword optimization, a customized cover letter template, and a customized “thank you” letter template for $399.

Alex says that he averages roughly 8-9 clients a month and brings in an extra $1500—just using a skill that he already had!

Litigator Saves Bloggers From Legal Destruction

What It’s About

Litigator helps bloggers navigate the murky waters of the law.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Jade thinks that doing as much research ahead of time is so helpful so you can feel more confident in getting started. However, she would also say that you should give yourself some flexibility as well since you never know how the direction of your business may ultimately change.

Fun Fact

The English common law is based on a cultural system of settling disputes through local custom. The early tribes of England each held their own set of customs, but this system became increasingly formalized as those early tribal peoples came together and organized. These ancient customs are the basic principles that eventually became part of the American system of justice.

Notes from Chris

Episode 658

Jackie Stoughton started her blog back in 2012 as a creative outlet. Blogging was in its prime, WordPress was easy to use, and she needed a way to wind down after a long day at her job as a law firm litigator.

She loved meeting other creative-types over the internet, and the more she explored, the more she noticed an alarming trend. Most of her friends’ blogs were illegal. Like, actually-breaking-the-law illegal.

Few of them had a ‘Terms and Conditions’ page. Most said nothing whatsoever about privacy. And basically, nobody was following trademark or copyright laws. But the worst part was sponsored content—she never saw disclaimers about being paid or given free gear in exchange for a review!

Sure, Jackie knew some mysterious man from the government wasn’t going to track down all these small-time blogs and put the writers in jail for not following the law to a ‘T’, but that didn’t mean these bloggers were deliberately trying to skirt the rules.

A lot of them wanted to be in full compliance and ethically sound. They wanted their blogs to become businesses, and to do that, they had to ensure that they were doing whatever they could to follow the laws.

Understanding these laws was Jackie’s field of expertise, but she hesitated. Did she really want to start writing about legal matters on her creative outlet blog? After going back and forth, she finally decided that the opportunity was just too good. She had exactly what those bloggers needed: the ability to interpret and understand the “legalese” of copyright law. So she started Jade & Oak, a blogger’s one stop shop for all things legal.

So she started writing more and more about the legal side of blogging. And, as can be expected when you provide something that’s much needed but hard to find, readers started showing up.

There wasn’t much strategy in that first year or so. She wrote helpful content, readers showed up, and that was that. She made a small profit from Google ads. That’s what everyone was doing at the time, and her expenses were just her monthly hosting fee. It was simple and easy. But Jackie knew that if she wanted to really grow the blog into a profitable, sustainable business, she’d have to do more than that.

That winter, she wrote and launched The Blogger’s Handbook for Keeping It Legal, offering it for $35. She had a few sales over the next couple months—nothing too dramatic—but the idea was validated. Those hours she spent writing a long ebook were slowly becoming money.

A couple months later, Jackie launched her first course, Blog While You 9-5, and began making more money. A couple months later, she had her best month yet: $600—and all from pre-sales of her next course, Blog and Be Legal. The strategic planning was literally paying off.

She realized she could only give so much free content away before it was time to convert viewers to buyers, so it was more important to have fewer, better free resources than a whole bunch of mediocre ones.

So she slowed down her creation of free blogs and started launching more products. She also stopped hosting so many webinars, focused on the highest converting ones, and began optimizing her email marketing.

These changes helped to increase her side hustle income while allowing her to work less. She expects to profit around $10,000 in 2018 and hopes to keep growing next year.

Jackie’s thrilled to have her first child in November and is working hard to streamline the blog so that it can run on (mostly) autopilot for the first half of 2019. She wants to be able to rest and enjoy time with her baby, and she’s grateful she’s taken the time to create a product-based business that she knows will continue to earn some extra income while she’s enjoying maternity leave from her job.

Colorado Nutritionist Reworks Role to Get Paid Twice

What It’s About

A nutritionist uses her skills to create the job she wants.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Is there anything that Haley wishes she had done differently?

Well, Haley admits that she started on the low side of pricing because her closest comparison was based off other competitors, even though they didn’t have the same credentials, experience, or education that she did. Fortunately, she learned fairly quickly that she needed to raise her rate because of all the additional time she spent checking in with her clients, creating meal plans for them, among other things.

Fun Fact

The American food scene has undergone some pretty drastic changes over the past two decades. During this period, the public has seen the introduction of genetically modified crops, the mainstreaming of organic foods into America’s supermarkets, and the rise of chefs elevated to celebrity status within pop culture. With each passing year, more and more Americans are taking a harder look at the food that they eat and where it comes from, and Haley’s side hustle is the perfect way to capatlize on this burgeoning, healthy eating trend!

Notes from Chris

Episode 630

After finishing grad school, Haley Hughes thought that her master’s degree in dietetics was a one-way ticket to a job in a hospital or food service setting, and that’s about it. So she got a job in a Colorado hospital as their Registered Dietician. And she liked that job. She got to work with new people every day, and help them live a better life.

But, as much as she liked her job, after a few years working there, Haley knew there was more she could do. She wanted a chance to be supportive, hold her clients accountable, and coach them… for more than the 15 minutes at a time she got to spend with hospital patients.

So on a cold day, just a few months ago, Haley decided she was going to get her foot in the door. She went to leave her new business card at her favorite local coffee shop. The owner was in and asked Haley if she would be interested in doing a nutrition analysis for their menu items. She had a project going from day one! This analysis was both a lesson in time management and making bold moves to launch a side hustle. While it ended up taking a lot longer than she anticipated, it was the perfect first step and confidence booster she needed.

Next, she went to leave a card at a women’s boutique, and the owner asked if she would organize a shopping and 5k running race. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Haley went all in and said ‘Of course!’ Over 50 women showed up for the race.

She called her new venture RDRx Nutrition, and it took after that. She went from strength to strength, planning community events, column writing for the local newspaper, to recipe blogging and working with her own clients. She was learning, both from her clients and their experiences, that there were more ways to educate and promote health than just the traditional dietitian route. Not only that, but she was having way more fun doing it, too.

So far she’s averaging about $1,000 in additional monthly income. The money has helped her and her husband travel to Bora Bora, and dream about their next trip to Italy in a few months.

Charismatic Coaching Duo Earns $50,000/Month

What It’s About

Two friends prove that a little charisma can go a long way.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Their YouTube success, Ben says, is based on two factors. The first is creating great content which is laser-targeted to a loyal audience. The next is learning how to get attention on the platform—like creating clickable headlines and choosing your thumbnail image to entice people to watch. According to Ben, if you can get these two down, you’ll be unstoppable on the platform!

Fun Fact

According to an evolutionary theory proposed by a pair of psychologists, exposure to charisma can actually increase generosity. Subjects who saw a Ted talk by a charismatic speaker later gave more money to a stranger than did those who saw an uncharismatic one.

Notes from Chris

Episode 628

In the world of investment banking, it pays to be outgoing and assertive. It’s a dog-eat-dog world and if you don’t have the ability to stand out, you can quickly find yourself lost in the system or without a job at all. This pressure, combined with a desire to connect with more people, is what led Ben Altman and Charlie Houpert to study the psychology of charisma.

They believed relationships—both with yourself, and the people around you—are the key to being a successful person. If you were going to make the right decisions, and end up in the right places, you needed to have trust and confidence in yourself and have that reciprocated by the people around you.

So, the pair delved deep into books, attended seminars and took courses to help them become the most charismatic versions of themselves. They tried everything they learned in their day to day lives and, slowly but surely, they began to transform into the most charismatic versions of themselves.

They saw their dating lives improve. Their social circles expand. Their bosses take a shine to them. And people would openly comment on how (positively) confident and charismatic they were.

After a while, their desire to work in the corporate world faded and was replaced with a passion for helping people.

They decided they wanted to try something new. They wanted to teach the charisma skills they’d learned to people who needed it. They figured if they did it right, it would allow them to travel and work from wherever, without affecting their income.

It began with a blog called Charisma On Command, and the duo started writing posts about topics they cared about. They also offered a cheap eBook to people who joined their mailing list and put together in-person seminars for the low cost of $10 per person. This allowed them to test the waters without becoming over-invested—both financially and time-wise—into the business. At worst they thought they’d get some practice writing and talking about a subject they enjoyed.

The more they created and shared, the more copies of their books they sold, and the more people attended their seminars. They saw a real market for helping people become more charismatic, and they decided this was the future business both of them wanted. So, they began to be more intentional and carefully expand.

Thanks to a couple of strategic decisions (listen to the episode to learn more!), they’ve experienced exponential growth and are currently generating income of $50,000 a month through sales of Charisma University!

Looking to the future, Charlie and Ben are looking to take on more speaking events and in-person seminars. They love the feel of connection to a crowd and know they do their best work when they can interact and react to the people around them.

Pump It Up! Project Manager Elevates Female Fitness

What It’s About

A side hustle that helps transform the lives of other women!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

When asked about standing out in a saturated market Lucy said, “Just because someone else is doing something doesn’t mean that you don’t have something unique and valuable to add to the market. Be so authentic and true to yourself that you end up being different from everything else that’s out there. Just because there are others in the market doesn’t mean that their message is going to resonate with your potential customers.”

Fun Fact

Lucy’s ambassador program Fire Tribe got its name from an inspiring quote that got her through her own transformation: “Some women fear the fire, others become it.” It was a quote she’d post on Instagram. When her followers began quoting it back to her and hashtagging it, she thought it was a perfect fit.

Notes from Chris

Episode 580

27-year-old Lucy Dunne is—by her own account—a free spirit. In her heyday, she spent years partying hard and traveling the world not knowing what the next day held. As an Aussie now living in Alberta, Canada, Lucy found herself working full-time as a lead project manager tasked with providing signage solutions for corporations across North America. Like most jobs, it had its ups and downs.

The job kept her busy, and she was making ends meet. But there was one area of her life that she wanted to improve—her health and fitness. Lucy had acquired a new habit of binge eating, and it didn’t help that she was smoking up to a pack of cigarettes a day. But it wasn’t until she was having trouble fitting into regular sized clothes at retail shops that she knew something had to change.

There’s a lot of noise in the health and fitness space. So instead of looking to all the experts, she decided to do it her own way. She said “so long” to hours spent on the dreaded treadmill and stairclimber machines and introduced weightlifting and other activities that didn’t feel like such a chore to her routines.

Instead of denying herself the things she loved and meticulously counting her calories, she started to adopt an “everything in moderation” mentality and focused on macro ratios more than calories. Over the next three years, trips to the gym and meal times stopped being something she dreaded, and more importantly, she was seeing good results.

By 2015, she was 65 lbs down from her original weight and felt that she could finally stop hiding behind large purses in pictures. Lucy was so proud of what she had accomplished that she decided to document the remainder of her journey on Instagram—and that’s when everything changed.

Each day, Lucy shared a bit more about her journey. Because of the transparency and authenticity of her posts, she began drawing the attention of other women who were looking to improve their health and fitness routines.

At this point, she knew what worked best for herself, but she wanted to get a better idea of what would work for others as well. So, Lucy Dunne decided to get certified as a personal trainer and nutrition coach.

And before she knew it, a new transformation was underway… of the side hustle variety! She called it Dunnebells.

With an avid Instagram following looking for her help, she started with them. Within the first month, she had roughly 20 clients enrolled in each program, and with each month that passed, her programs were selling out faster than she could open them up!

In the beginning, Lucy’s side hustle was earning her $1,000 a month. Gradually, her monthly earnings bumped up to $2,000. By October 2017, she was making $5k a month. Now at $10k+ a month, her side hustle has become her full-time hustle!

Children’s Book Author Turns Page to New Income

What It’s About

A mother makes a career out of telling children stories.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

If you want to teach others something, make sure that you have developed the necessary skill and experience first. Plus, building career capital gives you perspective and confidence that can help you stand out from the competition!

Fun Fact

Before Eevi started helping aspiring children’s book authors, she was creating and launching book trailers for USA Today bestselling authors like Nicholas Sansbury Smith, Debra Webb, and James Hankins. By all metrics, she had a thriving business. It was only when she realized that she couldn’t scale her business that she decide to pivot.

Notes from Chris

Episode 538

For work at home mom Eevi Jones, a career that was non-location dependent was of vital importance. With a military spouse, she never could stay in one place for too long, having moved 12 times over the past 19 years. Besides building Lego castles with her two boys during the day, Eevi was also a successful children’s book author who helped publishing houses launch book trailers for their bestselling authors.

By all measures, Eevi’s career was going well. With over a dozen children’s books published, Eevi had substantial experience authoring, illustrating, and marketing books in her niche. With her vast experience particularly in the illustration of books, she found herself booked out weeks or months in advance with great demand for her services. But at the beginning of 2017, she realized that work was catching up with her. Sometimes she would go to bed at 1 in the morning, and then be up at 5. She couldn’t spend time with her children or her husband, and she didn’t have time to write children’s books anymore. She found she was becoming a victim of success.

What do you do when you’re overwhelmed with work and business? You start another business, of course! A different kind of business.

Eevi’s friends had suggested that she could teach others how to launch a career as a children’s book author. With her vast experience and familiarity with the publishing industry, it was a natural change, and Eevi became convinced that this was a business which she was uniquely qualified to build.

To date, Eevi has managed to earn upwards of $1,500 a month from the combined revenue of her published book and coaching. The course is now becoming a reality.

She expects that her monthly income will grow as she scales her efforts and grows her platform – something she was never able to do in her previous business. The success of authors whom she has coached also gives her immense satisfaction that she didn’t have before.

Eevi attributes most of her success to having built up “career capital.” It’s a concept coined by University of Georgetown Professor Cal Newport, who says that mastery and the keys to a good career come from developing experience and expertise. Not only did Eevi publish a dozen children’s books before she started teaching this skill to others, she also made sure to continually refine her material by approaching the issue from a beginner’s perspective. It’s made a big difference in setting her apart from her competition.

Like Eevi, you too can write a new chapter in your business or side hustle. Just don’t be afraid to turn the page!

Danish Pastry Partnership Bakes Up Series of Events

What It’s About

How a pastry builds a friendship and a delicious side hustle!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

While a market-type environment may seem like a ripe environment for competition, it may actually serve you better in the long-term if you work together with your fellow sellers.

Collaborating in the beginning was mutually beneficial for Chad and Zoie. Chad was able to save money on the filling for his pastries, Zoie had someone directing people to her stand, and they both got more exposure for their products.

Fun Fact

There’s much speculation on the origins of æbleskiver, but one of the most popular theories dates back to the time of the Vikings. Apparently, one band of these rampaging Vikings had been particularly hit hard in battle, so, when they got back on their ship, they decided to have one of their favorite dishes to help them regain their strength—pancakes.

In those days, they did not have modern conveniences like frying pans, so, they greased their dented shields and poured the pancake batter on them over the fire but, guess what came out of the holes of the shields—Æbleskiver!

Notes from Chris

Episode 523

Today’s side hustle was actually a result of a different side hustle. Back in 2007, Chad Gillard, a business analyst at a Minneapolis agency by day, was selling æbleskiver at a local farmer’s market. His food stall neighbor, Zoie Glass, owner of Lucille’s Kitchen Garden, was selling jam—the perfect thing to fill the æbleskiver with. A natural partnership formed between them—Zoie offered to let Chad use her jams in the pastries, and in return, he would conveniently direct customers to her food stall.

By collaborating like this, they both benefited. Chad was able to save money on the filling for his pastries, and they both got more exposure for their products. They decided to team up to try to learn more about growing their food businesses. They attended national trade shows and met with food industry leaders in other areas in order to figure out the best way to bring their businesses to the next level.

Their aim when starting Midwest Pantry was to help level the playing field for small-time players trying to take their food business to the next level. They noticed that even though the Midwest is known as the breadbasket of America, all the big wholesale food trade shows were located on the coasts. These are the places food producers go to meet with wholesale buyers and try to get their products in grocery stores and other markets.

Not only would people have to fly to the coast to attend these, they would have to pay upwards of $10,000 to get a booth in order to try to sell their products. For many people who are just starting out, this is unreachable. Chad and Zoie wanted to bring together local food producers with wholesale buyers without the astronomical price tag.

A local kitchen and food supply store was holding an annual tent sale, and Chad and Zoie thought this could be a great place to gauge interest in a trade show type event. Ahead of the tent show, Midwest Pantry paid for an extra day for the tents and set up booths for food producers. They only charged enough to cover the costs and brought in wholesale buyers.

After testing things out at the tent show, they secured some booths at a food and wine show that was held at the state fairgrounds.

These experiments were somewhat successful, but the next step was to create their own trade show. And that led to two more phases!

So let’s talk about how they make money. Like the activities of the business itself, the revenue model for Midwest Pantry has transformed multiple times since Chad and Zoie started up. At first, they tried to create a membership model, but because they didn’t have the name recognition then that they do now, it didn’t really take off. They then transitioned to monetizing at the event level, but because they wanted to make sure food producers had access to the events, they also wanted to keep costs down. Therefore, they’ve since transitioned back to the membership model.

The membership model they now offer includes both individual and corporate tiers. At the annual individual level, which is $65 a year, members get free entry to the meetups and access to the educational series, along with other discounts. Premium memberships, which are $40 a month, allows members to rent out space in the Food District. There are five tiers of corporate memberships ranging in price from $500 to $10,000 a year.

They have anywhere from one hundred to one hundred fifty individual members, depending on the time of year, over a dozen corporate members. Over the years, Midwest Pantry has worked with over five hundred businesses.

Midwest Pantry has been sowing the seeds of growth and fostering a community of collaboration and innovation for over ten years. And yes—it’s still a side hustle for both Chad and Zoie. It gives them the opportunity to help other side hustlers and to have a voice in shaping the food industry for small businesses. You might even say they’re helping keep the bread in the breadbasket of America!
