Aussie Stretches Out with Online Store for Tall Women

What It’s About

A clothing brand that sends highwaters packing!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Because size matters, Natalie had to decide which sizes to work with when creating her samples. So, like almost anyone in this day and age, she took to Instagram to ask her audience what sizes they wanted to see represented most. Most people tend to fall within the small-to-large range, but if there were significant outliers in the extra-small or extra-large categories, Natalie wanted to make sure that their wrists would be covered, too.

Fun Fact

While they might have a reach that makes you envious, taller people have slower reactions. That’s because it takes a bit longer for the nerve signals to travel to the brain. In one study, researchers found the signals slowed down 0.17 meters per second for every centimeter taller a person was. That must mean that the reaction time for the 8’11 tall Robert Wadlow, the tallest man ever, was slower than glacial melt.

Episode 565

There is a little-known plight in this world. It is often seen and usually ignored. But its effects are far-reaching and wide-ranging. It is only when the stars align during a solar eclipse that a solution to this plight is brought into the world. Or… at least that’s what it feels like for women over 5’10 looking for jeans that come past their ankles or sleeves that actually meet their wrists. Standing in all her glory at 6’3”, Natalie Matthews, an eCommerce manager by day and hero to tall women everywhere by night, knew this problem all too well.

Natalie spends her days in Melbourne, Australia managing clients and drinking fantastic coffee. And, up until she started her side hustle in 2016, she spent her nights dealing with the extreme frustration that comes with the inability of finding clothes that are long enough.

After countless hours of online searching, and many shrunken items of clothing, Natalie decided to take matters to her own hands. No longer would she be stifled with a lack of choice or frumpy clothing that more closely resembled potato sacks than cute outfits. She was better than that. It was time for her to take the challenge head-on and create the change she wanted to see in the world. Positive change, with better hemlines.

Natalie knew that she wasn’t alone in her struggle because she had a community of similarly tall women on Instagram to commiserate with. But she knew that it wouldn’t be enough to merely source and re-sell items of clothing. No. She would have to reach for the top shelf and design and make the clothing herself. After all, at a statuesque 6’3, she knew where things would need to fit better and how silhouettes should be crafted. And there would be no better test than her own day-to-day life.

The possibilities were endless as she began to think about all the things she could make, and all the places she would be able to wear properly proportioned clothes. If she was this excited just daydreaming about it, Natalie knew that she had stumbled onto a keeper of a side hustle idea. She would now be able to reach the Height-Of-Fashion.

Since she started Height of Fashion back in 2016, Natalie has used about $40,000 of her savings, and a lot of elbow grease, to fund her side hustle. She knew that investing this much money would be a risk, however worthwhile, but she also knew that she’d be in her job for a long time.

She had to invest in a website, marketing materials, and, to quote the lady herself: “about a thousand other things” to get her side hustle off the ground. Now, Natalie gets about 25 orders, or $2,600 a month, to put right back into her business and cover things like photography, website hosting, shipping fees, import duties, barcode fees, and transaction costs.

While it helped that Natalie has a background in eCommerce, she still had a lot to learn on her feet. She told us that had she not started Height of Fashion from the ground up, she doesn’t think that she would have had the knowledge, experience, or the expertise in the eCommerce sector that she does now. In her words, “getting my hands dirty and starting something from scratch that touches so many areas across the supply chain really improves your confidence.”

It’s a top-shelf adventure—we’ll see how high she can go!

Gamer Levels Up Life With eBay Side Hustle

What It’s About

Video game flipping earns an extra $500-800/month!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Rodney pays close attention to video game news to help him get the best price for the games he flips. If there is a new release of a classic coming up, or a sequel to a long-awaited title, Rodney will often hold onto a game until closer to the release date to take advantage of the hype.

For example, when the new Crash Bandicoot game was released for PlayStation 4 in 2017, the price of the original from 1996 shot up to almost the same price as the brand new game!

Fun Fact

As I’m sure you know, playing video games is an extremely popular pastime all over the world! And in the U.S. alone, 65% of households have some kind of a device for playing video games. There’s no doubt about it, we love playing video games, but which video game do we like playing the most?

Why the 1984 classic, Tetris, of course! It’s sold over 170 million copies to date which is more than the number of copies sold of Skyrim, Super Mario Bros., Pokémon Red/Blue, and Mario Kart Wii combined. (Whoa!)

Notes from Chris

Episode 564

For Rodney Wittenhagen, video games have always been a passion. Ever since he was a little kid, he’s loved nothing more than spending an afternoon, or sometimes the entire weekend, being transported to another universe. And now he’s found a way to turn his “love of the game” into a profitable side hustle.

It all started when Rodney was on the hunt for some classic Pokemon games. He’d played them as a child and was itching for a trip down memory lane. After searching, he came across the games in great condition on eBay, bought them, and played them through to completion as soon as they were delivered.

Rodney enjoyed the ease of the process and began to wonder if it was something he could use to earn some gold coins on the side. He’d already amassed a collection of video games and had some extra money to invest. So, he figured he’d test the idea.

He took the Pokemon games he’d bought and uploaded them to eBay. He set the price a little higher than what he’d originally paid for them, took pictures to show the quality of the cartridges, and wrote a quick description. He didn’t think much would happen, so he went about his day job as a production supervisor. But, much to his surprise, the games sold within a few hours! He’d made a few dollars from each game.

Rodney says the first sale was exciting, but he didn’t really do anything to celebrate. He just accepted his next quest: to grow his inventory and make more money from flipping his favorite games. To accomplish the first part, Rodney set himself a limit of $200. He felt this was enough money to get a good return on his investment, but if he couldn’t replicate his success, he wouldn’t be upset to lose it. If nothing else, he’d have some games he loved to show for it!

Rodney hopes to refine the system as the business grows, but right now it’s simple enough for him to deal with around his day-job and allows him to invest more of his $500 to $800 a month profit back into the business.

Looking to the future, Rodney wants to expand what he sells and create a larger inventory of games. He’s already started selling consoles and bundles through his website and wants to be able to cover more types of games and accessories. And, eventually, move his venture entirely away from eBay and create an online Pixel Warehouse empire! If he does that, he’ll be playing on expert mode.

MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:

  • Pixel Warehouse: Take a trip down memory lane—pick up some of your old favorites over on Rodney’s website
  • Shopify: Rodney used Shopify to set up his site for Pixel Warehouse, and they’re offering a 21-day trial and exclusive discount for all Side Hustle School listeners!
  • Facebook Marketplace, eBay, & Craigslist: The three platforms that Rodney uses to source the video games he flips

Bartender Earns Extra Income With “Revenge By Mail” Postcards

What It’s About

Postcards for your enemies, and you know, your frenemies.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Kelly had some really great advice: when you find an idea you like—“Don’t say, ‘I wish I’d thought of that!’ Rather, ask yourself, ‘How can I put my own spin on that?’ It can seem like every good business idea is already taken, but learning about existing, profitable side hustles can be the most valuable brainstorming tool.”

Fun Fact

When postcards were first invented, many people saw them as an unacceptable invasion of privacy. Over time, they become much more acceptable—though not usually for the kinds of things that Revenge By Mail features!

Notes from Chris

Episode 563

Kelly M. is a bartender, yoga teacher, and mobile notary in San Diego, California. She’s always had a few different things going on, but until this year she’s never had a side hustle in the form of an online business.

Her new project, Revenge By Mail, came about when she heard about a guy who offers shipments of glitter to someone you don’t like or just want to play a joke on. It was such a simple (and low-cost) product. Kelly thought it was brilliant, but she didn’t think it was something she would pay for as a consumer. She would, however, pay money to harmlessly embarrass her “frenemies.” So she took the glitter idea and made it her own.

The concept of Revenge by Mail isn’t really about taking revenge on someone. It’s more about playing a prank or joke on someone. Kelly used her rudimentary design skills to create a series of fake promotional postcards. They came from made-up companies and congratulated the recipient in an embarrassing way.

For example:

  • —From BargainBrides.com: “Congratulations on your mail-order bride, Jim!”
  • —From the My Little Pony Friendship Club: “Welcome to our newest member!”
  • —From XXL Male Enhancement: “Congratulations, you’ve reached Gold level status. Your package is on the way!”

These are a few of the tamer ones. For her most popular postcard, you’ll have to check out the notes. I’ll just say it congratulates the recipient on being a frequent buyer of a personal product.

These days, she’s bringing in around 10 orders a day at $10 each, making an average of $100 a day. The time commitment is about 10 minutes a day—not a bad wage!

This experiment has got her thinking about what’s next. She’s already working on her second online project, hoping to build more passive income. If you ever need to take Revenge By Mail, or just play a prank on someone, maybe you should order a postcard.

MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:

  • Revenge By Mail: Don’t get mad—get even! Send your frenemies one of Kelly’s quirky and embarassing postcards
  • Reddit | Funny Subreddit: The subreddit that Kelly posted a picture of her postcard in that lead to an increase in traffic and sales
  • Shopify: Kelly used Shopify to set up her site for Revenge By Mail, and they’re offering a 21-day trial and exclusive discount for all Side Hustle School listeners!
  • Vistaprint: The platform that Kelly uses to print out all of her postcards

Avoiding Toilet Paper Leads To $10,000/Month Side Income

What It’s About

A side hustle that’s not flushing away any profits!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

What’s great about this side hustle is that it’s not exactly a crowded market! It’s also a side hustle that makes sense because if you grow up using the bathroom a certain way, then that’s probably what you’re going to want to do when you move somewhere else.

And the best part is that most people have more than one bathroom, so they buy multiple bidets. This makes the average order at least $140, not $70!

Fun Fact

Between Summer 2015 and Summer 2016, Ahmad turned into a “plumber” on evenings and weekends installing bidets. He did this while still having a full-time job as a Senior Technology Consultant at a top global firm. As he said, “it was fun to take on this other persona of a tradesman, blue-collar worker, given that my full-time job was as a white-collar consultant.”

Notes from Chris

Episode 562

Ahmad Iqbal grew up traveling the world. His father’s work meant his family often moved to foreign countries. Although he was born in Canada, before his 22nd birthday he’d spent time living in Pakistan, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Korea, England, United States, Italy and Dubai.

This constant moving gave him a unique perspective of the world, exposed him to new ideas and instilled a maturity beyond that of most kids. That perspective meant he got good at spotting opportunities. Opportunities that most people growing up in a single culture don’t see.

By his early twenties, the travel had settled down and Ahmad was no longer being moved around by his family. He’d set up home base in Toronto, Canada.

He lived around a lot of immigrant families and this triggered a memory. In all the countries he’d lived, people used the bathroom differently. In North America, we take it for granted that we flush and wipe with toilet paper. However, in many Middle Eastern, European and Asian countries, they use a bidet to tidy up.

To describe a bidet, I’ll use Ahmad’s own words; “A bidet is like a mini shower you can use while you’re on the toilet.”

He thought it strange that something so fundamental to foreign bathroom habits hadn’t made its way to North America. He decided to find out why and asked his family and friends why they hadn’t installed one. The responses gave him hope:

  • 1. It seems hard to install or might require sophisticated plumbing
  • 2. They didn’t know they were available

Both these concerns were addressable. Ahmad just had to make or acquire a bidet that was super easy to install and then get the word out about it. So he decided to create his own bidet company, Nadeef Bidets.

Once they arrived Ahmad commenced rigorous testing—I’ll let you use your imagination to figure out how. He settled on the one that was the best performing, highest quality, and easiest to install. He had found the gold standard of bidets.

He started with an order of 100 bidets but should have made it more. By the time they arrived, he’d already sold the additional 80 units and had to order more straight away. Things were happening so fast that he didn’t even have packaging for the product. For the first 100 orders he ended up wrapping them like a Christmas present. It wasn’t until his second large order from the supplier that he had them prepackaged every unit before shipment.

And the sales have not slowed down! Nadeef Bidets now generates around $10,000/month and is still run by just one man, Ahmad. That’s been enough for him to quit his job at Deloitte and go full-time. It just goes to show you, you never know where a good flush can lead you!

If you find yourself in a place where you think, “hey, I want to make some changes,” the #1 thing I can suggest is to start making those changes right away. Don’t wait for January 1st. Don’t wait until you have everything figured out. Identify just a few things, big or small, that you can do, and get them done!

Retired Couple Sells Digital Art Prints Online

What It’s About

Art prints that keep retirement from being a bore.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Imagine that tomorrow you didn’t have to go to work. But you also felt rested and ready for a new challenge. What would it be? Would you embark on a new career or adventure? Imagine, in this scenario, that you have to choose something.

There may come a time when that fantasy is more than just a daydream! And of course, there’s no need to wait until then to get started.

Fun Fact

So where do they get the backdrops for the designs they put together? Well, Stephen and Lyn have an extensive collection of retro service station maps from the 1940s-50s that they sourced from a series of estate sales and on eBay!

Notes from Chris

Episode 560

Stephen Sasser and Lyn Nance-Sasser are a husband-and-wife duo creating art. They first met in art school and had a studio in Portland, Oregon where they would make physical silk-screen prints full-time in the 80s. To raise their family and send their children to private school, they both decided to take positions with a regular paycheck. Stephen took a job as a creative art director while Lyn worked as an illustrator.

After their kids finished with college, Stephen and Lyn started thinking about what they would do as their retirement was approaching. They knew that their hearts were in printmaking. It’s how they best express themselves, so they restarted their studio art practice.

But instead of handmade art prints, Stephen and Lyn made a shift to using digital techniques. Back in the dark ages, they’d spend an entire day making only a couple of prints—before anyone wants to buy them. They used to have full storage of arts that didn’t sell. By embracing new technology, they get to design the images and store them on their computer. And only print the art piece on demand using a third-party printing facility. According to Stephen, digital printmaking is 10 times easier than doing it physically while the quality is as good as handmade prints.

In 2012, Stephen and Lyn received a $7,500 grant from the Regional Arts and Culture Councils in Portland to produce ten prints with Portland icons. They spent a portion of this grant to get their own printing equipment. Then, they came up with the idea and began making images of urban icons, superimposed on retro service station tourist-maps. The icons are located over the background maps with a “YOU ARE HERE” logo that shows the spot on locations.

Because they began in Portland, their original theme was “You Are Here — Portland.” They held their first exhibition at Powell’s City of Books. Many of their prints were sold out at that show, and it gave them the courage to proceed with their retirement in 2013. They then had a few other exhibitions at coffee shops, microbrew pubs, bookshops, and art galleries.

Based on the positive response they received from You Are Here — Portland, they went back to their studio and initiated a Kickstarter campaign called “You Are Here — Coast-to-Coast.” The goal was to expand their horizon and bring the You Are Here Art Prints to other cities across the country.

Right now, Stephen and Lyn sell upwards of 100 prints a month at an average price of $35/each, with 1/3rd of them coming from local sales and the other 2/3rds coming from Amazon Handmade. They enjoy shipping their prints all over the USA, and they have even shipped to Japan, Australia, and Great Britain. Sometimes, they enter the receiving address into Google Maps and have a look at where the prints will be sent. It reinforces their original reason for embracing printmaking and fuels their passion for growing the business further.

For Stephen and Lyn, the best part of the side hustle is that it allows them to do what they love. They can’t imagine themselves not doing anything after their retirement. And their side hustle keeps them from being bored while generating good income at the side.

Independent Musician Strikes Chord With Customized Love Ballads

What It’s About

Customized love ballads keep the roof over an independent musician’s head.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

So, how did Crissi go from writing a mere 2 songs in 2015 to knocking out 12 original songs in less than two weeks?

At the time, she was reading a book called Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg, and in it, she mentions this mantra, “done is better than perfect.” That became a mantra for Crissi as she was writing these songs. She didn’t have the luxury of second-guessing herself—customers had paid for these songs upfront, so if she didn’t deliver, she wasn’t just going to have difficulties making her rent the next month—she’d also potentially leave someone without a gift for their sweetheart. So, she pretty much had to make it work.

Fun Fact

Aside from it being meaningful work that helps keep the roof over her head, this side hustle has had a lot of other really great benefits. She was really just recording all of these songs herself, which was something that she had not done in about a decade and her skills were really out of date. This gave her some additional experience and made it to where she’s a lot more self-sufficient and doesn’t need to hire an engineer every time she wants to demo something. It also has the added bonus of making her more productive!

And it’s made her a lot of new fans too! 9 times out of 10, when someone is requesting a song, it’s from someone she’s never heard from before.

Notes from Chris

Episode 559

It was February 1st of 2016, and Crissi Cochrane was working on her resume. Until the previous year, she had a day job and a steady paycheck while playing music on the side. But after only 9 months of striking out on her own with her music, she was looking at the bottom of her bank account. She had to do something in order to make some extra cash and keep a roof over her head…

When it came down to it, though, she just couldn’t bring herself to send out her resume. She needed extra money but wanted to do something with music. So as many of us so often do, she procrastinated and instead opened up an email from her mom.

Well aware that her daughter’s financial troubles had her singing the blues, she came to Crissi with an idea. With Valentine’s Day coming up, a musician she knew was offering to cover love songs for people to give to their sweethearts as a unique gift.

Crissi thought this idea was interesting, but she had a better one. What if she took the concept one step further and offered to write and record original love songs? The way she saw it, she could charge more and have a better chance at making her rent for the next month.

But how do you get access to the most intimate details of a person’s relationship in order to put together something like this? Why, you put together a questionnaire, of course!

She quickly dove in that night and focused on questions that essentially peeled back the curtain on a relationship. She started out with basic questions asking for their loved one’s name, what they look like, what they love about them the most, etc., but then she went deeper, asking about how it felt when they first met, and what their love language was.

Without skipping a beat, she added her questionnaire to a new page on her existing website under a tab appropriately titled “Songs for Your Sweetheart” (now “Custom Love Songs”) and started accepting orders for $325/song on the 2nd. Her goal: to write 10 original songs for clients by Valentine’s Day.

In all honesty, Crissi had no idea if this would strike a chord with anyone. When she didn’t sell any songs her first day, she was discouraged. But by the 2nd day, word had gotten around. Four days later, she had succeeded in writing and recording 12 original love songs in 11 days… which made it the most productive week of her entire life as a musician!

Two years later, Crissi has composed and recorded over 50 of these customized, commissioned love songs. That’s enough content for 4 albums! It’s also opened up another unexpected source of income for her: weddings. Prior to the project, Crissi had struggled to play weddings because so much of her music was about unrequited love or not family friendly enough for a wedding. And now she doesn’t have to second guess herself—she has a whole book of songs that she can play at the drop of a hat.

"I would love to see more musicians taking on this type of work. Any kind of artist can find a way to use their skills to create commissioned pieces in this way. There are so many ways to express love with art, and if you can help people do that and put more love into this world, that’s a really noble thing to do."

5-Year-Old’s Frustration Leads to Modern Day Piggy Bank

What It’s About

Piggy banks that don’t require you to break the bank!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

If Esther learned one thing during this process, it was the importance of securing a lower minimum of quantity from manufacturers. As she said, “it’s hard to know whether things will move and how quickly they will move, and if you have a product that’s bigger in size, those storage costs really add up!”

Fun Fact

Remember those piggy boxes that were glued together and couldn’t be sold? Esther says she’d hate to throw these glued and unsellable boxes away. If any of our listeners who have kids would like a free Piggy Box, head over to thepiggybox.com and email Esther. First-come, first-served!

Notes from Chris

Episode 558

Jacob Diaz was five years old and already a side hustler. After the city dumpster trucks would empty the large garbage cans, he would walk down the street and bring them in for the neighbors. Soon he was hauling in twelve cans in every Thursday night—the beginnings of his garbage can empire!

For a kid, he was really raking in the dough from his neighbors, and his parents figured this was a great chance to capitalize on a “teachable moment.”

His mother, Esther, went out and bought three piggy banks. One for “spend,” one for “save,” and one for “give.” The idea was to instill the values of careful saving, generous giving, and hard work. And it worked—Jacob was filling up all three of his piggy banks at record speed.

Except the teachable moment started to fall apart when it came time to retrieve that money. The piggy banks, well, weren’t willing to give it up. Esther even tried to get the dollar bills out with chopsticks in what she calls “Mr. Miyagi style,” but to no avail.

The cash was stuck. Like, really stuck—and it didn’t really make sense to teach good stewardship by breaking the piggy banks to get it out. The short-term trick? Medical forceps. They got those bills out through minor surgery on the pig. The long-term solution? Build a better piggy bank.

In 2013, Esther started putting together her idea: a 3-drawer box. Give, save, and spend would each have their own drawer and money organization slots for dollars and coins. No more tiny piggy bank holes or not being able to count your money—it would all be easy to access and easy to count.

Unfortunately, the initial Piggy Box design was bulky and unable to be reduced in size. This increased the warehouse space needed and resulted in a bunch of damaged product during shipping. Esther’s new design will be in production soon, and she can’t wait to slice these costs dramatically. She doesn’t want to hog all the storage space!

But that brings up another problem: minimum order quantity. Esther just put up with large orders and high costs in the past, but she knows she shouldn’t have to—especially now that she’s able to put some more time into finding a manufacturer now that the business is running.

She’s taking her time to find the right partner for her next run, hoofing around to different manufacturers to sop up their proposals. Lower MOQs will help her business be more successful because she’ll be able to spend less on big batches of product and more on marketing and sales (and some big upcoming partnerships we can’t name yet).

But while the additional profit she brings in has been great for Esther, the greater joy of the side hustle has been growing it with her family. Trips to UPS with her son, family assembly lines for State Fair demonstrations—creating these special moments for her kids has been, by far, the most rewarding part of it all. This little piggy has certainly gone to market!

More Monet, Fewer Problems: Attorney Turns Holiday Prints Into Cash

What It’s About

A passion for watercolors leads to a familial shift in priorities.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Jane’s number one lesson, in both life and side hustling, is that moving slowly is better than standing still. Probably because, as a mom, she doesn’t have time to stand still. But, it was the incremental gains that showed her that some weeks may be more productive than others, success isn’t possible without the little steps to take you there.

Fun Fact

The marble slab that eventually became Michelangelo’s statue of David was originally cut 43 years beforehand for an artist named Agostino di Duccio. Agostino gave up on his sculpture and, 10 years later, another artist named Antonio Rossellino took a crack at sculpting it. He eventually gave up as well, which paved the way for Michelangelo to start working on his chiseled masterpiece in 1501. Persistence pays off!

Notes from Chris

Episode 557

Jane Du, an attorney from Dallas, has always had a passion for art. When she wasn’t studying for her electrical engineering degree, she could often be found absent-mindedly doodling on textbook pages or random sheets of paper. But it wasn’t until she found a set of oil paints and a canvas during a summer holiday that she began to look at her art more seriously.

Not seriously enough to pursue it instead of engineering, and eventually law school, but enough to take classes and build her skills.

Watercolors, live models, and acrylic paints soon filled her weekends, and her work started to grow. Once in a while, a friend or family member would ask to purchase a painting, but Jane still didn’t take her art seriously. She just did it because she loved the creative balance it offered when she wasn’t working on case briefs or depositions.

When she started to take an online watercolor painting class in 2016, Jane created a Facebook page dedicated to her art so she could show off her work, without spamming her friends.

Not only did her artist page help Jane track her progress over time, it also inspired her to combine different styles to create new art forms, too. It was after a calligraphy class in 2017 that Jane came up with the idea to combine calligraphy with watercolor paintings.

Following a holiday to Hawaii with her family, she made a few postcards to send to her friends with scenes from the island. She also posted them online, and queries started to fill her inbox. Her other friends, the ones who weren’t graced with a watercolor-slash-calligraphy postcard, wanted to buy one of their own!

That’s when she thought that creating cards and prints to sell wasn’t such a bad idea. A picture started to form in her mind… it would be easy to grow without taking up too much personal time, and she wouldn’t have to part with the original prints!

Even though she had the foundation for a side hustle in her head, she didn’t think about it too seriously until she had a baby in mid-2017.

Her maternity leave gave her the time she needed to invest in building it out. She spent a week watching Youtube tutorials to learn how to create her Finn and Remy website and watched her side hustle come to life with a pre-launch sale that saw 12 orders come in during her first week. Since then, her orders have exponentially increased—and so has her passion.

Jane has also added two children’s books to her roster of creative endeavors, and she’s brought in around $15,000 since September of 2017. While Jane says they don’t have the same profit margins as her prints, she knows this is just the next step in her family’s big adventure. Her side hustle has inspired them to shift their focus from work to family and take a long trip abroad, starting in Mexico. While Jane doesn’t know where her side hustle, or next destination, will take them, she knows that her family’s priorities wouldn’t have realigned without the freedom she gained from her art.

Underwear Side Hustle Turns Into $500,000/Month Business

What It’s About

An inclusive underwear company for every body.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Fran and Naomi did a lot of research prior to launching and while they were building TomboyX, and one of the most important things they learned along the way was that lifestyle brands with real staying power started by focusing on one “hero” product and building from there. Their customers had been asking them to make boxer briefs for women, so they listened. And that’s how they found their hero product that paved the path for new products!

Fun Fact

Fran and Naomi have quite a knack for spontaneity—in 2014, they surprised friends by staging a surprise wedding during a flag football game. “At halftime, the ref, who was an ordained clergy, blew a whistle and married us right there,” Fran remembers with a laugh.

Notes from Chris

Episode 556

Fran Dunaway is the CEO and Co-Founder of TomboyX. The company makes underwear, swimwear, and loungewear that isn’t for everybody but is for anybody. They’re focused on fit and quality, offering every style in sizes XS to 4X. They’ve gone from zero employees 2 years ago to 15 today.

Before they started what was supposed to be a side project, Fran and her co-founder Naomi (who is also her wife) weren’t experts in fashion. Both of them had careers they enjoyed. But they also had a burning desire to make beautiful button-up shirts for women. They wanted to create a shirt with fine quality fabric, fun details and fit for a woman’s body. They chose the name TomboyX because they thought it was cute.

To compensate for their lack of background in the fashion industry, Fran and Naomi did a lot of research. They wanted to see what made a lifestyle brand truly “stick” with a dedicated fan base, as opposed to all the ones that came and went. They discovered something important: the lifestyle brands with staying power started by focusing on one ‘hero’ product and building from there. This doesn’t mean that they don’t expand and add products, but it does mean that they build the core business around that one hero product.

A Kickstarter project for TomboyX shirts out-raised its $75,000 goal, but they also learned something important through the process. The hero product for TomboyX was boxer briefs for women. They got more requests for that than anything else.

With this brief front in mind, they set out to make the softest, longest lasting waistband out there. They were determined to create one that you don’t even notice because it’s so comfortable, doesn’t leave a mark, and doesn’t cut off your circulation.

Since then they’ve perfected the formula for spending on ads and bringing in new customers, especially through Facebook ads, but also through podcast ad buys and other mediums. They have a team that does nothing but work on this. Instagram has been especially important for engagement, and they communicate daily with more than 75,000 followers.

If that sounds intimidating, remember, this is now a company. It wasn’t their goal to turn their side project into a multi-million dollar operation.

They found their hero product, but they also made their customers their heroes. Images on that Instagram profile and their website tell the stories of the target market they started with: not everybody, but anybody. They’ve clearly struck the right tone with the right products and the right audience.
