Weekly Recap: Setbacks, Roadblocks, and Challenges

Notes from Chris

Episode 575

THEMES & TAKEAWAYS:

A lot of the people I’ve talked to have found issues with the fees taken by larger organizations like Uber and Amazon. But in order to participate in those systems and have access to the number of people available on any given platform, you have to agree to the terms. Nobody is forcing you to do this.

If you don’t like it, don’t participate. And furthermore, if you think you can do better, you’re more than welcome to go somewhere else!

But keep in mind that you’re not just paying for using the service—you’re also paying for the reach that these services have and the convenience they offer. Life is short—ask yourself what you can do to get you one step closer to the goals that you believe in.

Listen to today’s Weekly Recap to learn more about perspective and adopting a positive attitude for side hustle success!

Money Grows on Moringa Trees

What It’s About

A side hustle that just goes to show you that money can grow on trees!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Jacquelyn has chosen to market to eager buyers rather than try to convince the reluctant ones. Eager buyers are people who typically are health conscious, go to the gym frequently, shop at Whole Foods, and stay in step with new health trends and superfoods. Reluctant buyers, well, don’t. Jacquelyn even worked on creating an on-the-go Moringa product for them so that they could take FERA Moringa wherever they go.

The lesson here: getting to know your ideal customer is crucial to learning what their needs are. Start there before you do any kind of marketing!

Fun Fact

It’s one thing to get your product on the shelf, it’s another to get people to understand it. A common misunderstanding is that the powder mixes easily with water, so Jacquelyn teaches people to mix it into smoothies, juices, hot drinks and sprinkle it in and on foods. She teaches through conversations, websites, trade shows, grocery store demos, and collaborative events with gyms and workout classes. She also offers step-by-step recipes featuring her powder on her website.

Notes from Chris

Episode 574

If you step inside Jacquelyn Turner-Hauer’s small New York City apartment, you may wonder if you’re in a mini-warehouse. Yes, there’s furniture, but parked around it are boxes of products, packing materials, and trade show banners—a sure sign of a side hustle. Jacquelyn’s roommates are not only understanding, they are often her shipping department.

Don’t be surprised if Jacquelyn isn’t there, though. She’s either out doing store demos, meeting with collaborators, or over on Wall Street working her day job at a hedge fund.

Her passion keeps pushing her through. She is driven to get her side hustle, FERA Moringa, into your hands because that’s what turned her from being a very sick person into an extremely healthy one.

Jaquelyn is 25 now, but at age 15 she was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease, a chronic, inflammatory condition that requires constant treatment. Her body was being weakened not only by the disease but by the heavy medications she had to take.

Her mom wanted a different outcome, so she went looking for alternatives. She found evidence that the leaves of the Moringa tree contained remarkable anti-inflammatory and iron-boosting properties—two of the most disabling factors in Crohn’s—and so she planted one in her Florida garden. The Moringa tree is native to India, commonly known as the drumstick or horseradish tree, but is cultivated around the world. Its leaves are rich in minerals and vitamins. Extracts from the leaves are an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. They’re used to treat malnutrition and increase breast milk in lactating mothers.

Jacquelyn’s mom began adding the leaves to her food, making Moringa tea and sprinkling the leaves on salads and in soups, about 1 – 2 teaspoons a day. With the zeal of a mom on a mission to heal her child, she even learned how to make Moringa powder. Within a short period of time, Jacquelyn’s condition began to show improvement. Before long, she was even off steroids and the anti-inflammation meds that she had previously so desperately relied on. And best of all—her tests and screenings showed zero inflammation.

Suddenly, Jacquelyn was doing well and her future was bright.

At 22, healthy and energized, it occurred to Jacquelyn that this wunder-supplement may be just the answer that so many like her were searching for. Being a creative and curious person by nature, Jacquelyn began to brainstorm how she could offer an alternative to others who were struggling. And that’s when she figured that perhaps it was time for a new passion project.

So far, FERA Moringa is bringing in around $2,000 a month with a 40% profit margin, and those numbers have been steadily growing the longer she’s in business. She’s building this money tree with the long-term in mind. Since starting the business, she’s seen a huge difference in herself. It’s improved her ability to manage her time and make decisions quickly.

Money grows on trees; you just need to find the right tree.

Super Fan Scores Big in the Football Community

What It’s About

A side hustle that brings sports fans together.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Rhett had some great advice for someone looking to start a side hustle: 1) learn how to work with less than what you think you need, 2) expect everyone to tell you why it won’t work, and 3) have the fortitude to move on and achieve your goals.

Fun Fact

During the 2011 Super Bowl, Rhett and his team were about to be let into the locker room of the Packers right before the game started, but someone caught on that they weren’t actually members of the media. Better luck next time, Rhett!

Notes from Chris

Episode 573

Rhett Grametbauer can’t remember a day in his life without sports. As a child, he decorated his room with Sports Illustrated covers. He had an NFL lunchbox. He even wore his Dallas Cowboys jersey for school pictures, especially when the dress code was “formal wear.”

So, when a sponsorship sales person from his favorite football team called him later in life, he was thrilled. Rhett was working for the Texas Department of Transportation as a marketing manager at the time, and the Dallas Cowboys were interested in getting him more involved.

From then on, Rhett was invited to attend games, cheerleading parties, and other events. It was there that he expanded his network. He got to give Mark Cuban a fist bump and explain how to throw out the first pitch at a World Series game to the famous Cowboys quarterback, Roger Staubach.

The more Rhett was involved in the sports world, the more he was reminded of a problem he had discovered years before. He realized that there was no simple service to help fans in faraway cities watch their hometown team play. Fans could either buy an expensive TV subscription or hope that they happened to pick the one bar in town showing the game for their team. Rhett knew there could be a better way of watching dislocated teams… so he took a shot at creating his own community, Foam Finger Nation.

Members of Foam Finger Nation can simply log-in and find the closest location to where their team is being viewed. They can also create an alumni group and invite other fans to watch parties. For now, it’s free—but it won’t always be. After the next football season, Rhett is planning a redesign along with a transition to operating the site as a paid membership service.

Foam Finger Nation is growing into the umbrella brand for everything Rhett wants to do. For example, he began and completed a quest to visit every NFL stadium in just 16 weeks, while driving a 1967 VW Bus from town to town. That project turned into a book he sells on Amazon called 25,000 Miles to Glory.

Then the people from NFL Films came calling. They were interested in an interview he’d done with their co-founder, who had died in the year since Rhett had interviewed him. Rhett used the chance to talk with them about 25,000 Miles to Glory (film version), and they helped get the film version off the ground.

He now earns royalties of at least $500/month from that project, in addition to sales from the book on Amazon. He’s currently raising money from his day job to pay for the next film he wants to make.

This is definitely a side hustle in the works, but there are a lot of ways that Rhett can take this to the next level. If you have some ideas that Rhett can add to his playbook for Foam Finger Nation, record a voice clip (or put together a simple email) and send it to podcast@sidehustleschool.com. We’d love to share your thoughts and ideas on the show!

On-the-Go Mouthwash Gets Mini-Makeover

What It’s About

Portable mouthwash that’s as fresh as you!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Mike knows some people who keep their ideas really close to their chest, but as Mike said, “you may have an innovative idea, but you’re never going to be able to validate it unless you ask for the honest opinions of those around you. Sure, you may run the risk of someone trying to beat you to the punch, but these kinds of ideas take a lot of time to develop. Don’t discredit all of the hard work and effort that you’ve put into building something like this—others are much less likely to do it themselves.”

Fun Fact

You may know that peppermint, eucalyptus, and vanilla beans were chewed on before mouthwash was invented. But did you know that no one wanted to buy mouthwash for its germ-killing properties at first? The increase in sales happened because they started to market mouthwash as a way to battle against bad breath.

Notes from Chris

Episode 572

We’ve all been there—bad breath can rear its ugly, bacteria coated head in the most inconvenient of times. Mike Bracciale found himself in one of those moments while cramming for a big Organic Chemistry test. As most college students do, he was pulling an all-nighter, which meant copious amounts of coffee and food that should only be consumed with caution after age 25.

He could have braved the storm. But as fate would have it, in walked his crush and fellow O. Chem. classmate, and since tables are often in short supply around midterms and finals, she opted to share his. At any other time, Mike would have welcomed such an opportunity, but with a weapon of mass relationship destruction brewing, things were just a little too close for comfort.

Feigning a desperate need to head back to his place just off of campus, Mike dashed home to freshen up a bit and then headed back to the library.

We may never know how he fared on that O. Chem. test, but what we do know is that while Mike didn’t end up getting the girl, he might have walked away with something even better: an idea.

Around this time, students all over campus were walking around with these small bottles of MiO, a concentrated flavored liquid that you could use to spruce up water—or perhaps vodka, this is a no judgment zone. While the bottle contained roughly 1.62 fl oz, it contained enough concentrated flavor to add to 24 8 oz. servings of water.

And with the struggles of bad breath fresh in his mind, Mike couldn’t help but wonder why no one had thought to do the same with mouthwash.

Being on a pre-med track with several terms of chemistry under his belt, he knew that the bulk of your everyday bottle of mouthwash was mostly water. If he could find a way to take the water out of mouthwash, he could create a product that didn’t yet exist on the market.

Just as Rome wasn’t built in a day, neither is an innovative mouthwash empire!

While Mike felt confident in his abilities, he had no desire to go into this alone. Enter Nick Telford—Mike’s fraternity brother and fellow mouthwash enthusiast. Nick was one of the people Mike had approached for feedback back in his rampant fraternity days. He loved the concept and was on board with helping Mike go from idea to action. They divided responsibilities, with Nick working on financing and brand development, while Mike focused on the product itself. As Mike said, “You never have to feel like you have to do anything on your own! It’s okay to have strengths and weaknesses—find someone with skills that complement your own.”

After months of testing, tasting, and revising, the duo ended up with a concentrated formula that actively fought bacteria, plaque, and tartar for up to 8 hours, would be able to pack 60 uses into a single 1.62 oz bottle, and of course, tasted fantastic.

Since they were transforming oral care by making it accessible on the fly, they decided to call their product Fly Mouthwash. The name is also a nod to the fact that it’s a TSA approved product and perfect for those who fly often.

They started out on Amazon but soon moved over to their own website. And by the time of this episode, they’ve sold more than half of their stock of 7,000 bottles of Fly Mouthwash… all within their first six months!

These days, Mike and Nick are looking to move away from marketing Fly Mouthwash as merely a “portable” option and are instead looking to replace your traditional mouthwash entirely. They recently secured funding from an outside investor interested in their product. While mouthwash greatness seems to be inevitable, they’re also content for the time being restoring confidence and freshening up the world, one mouth at a time.

Living the Dream: Man Gets Paid to Play Video Games All Day

What It’s About

How to make $3,000/month playing video games!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Brad didn’t know a thing about marketing when he started streaming, but he did know how to make people feel welcomed and appreciated. From the very beginning, when someone joined his stream, he would give them a quick shout out and invite them to ask questions if they had any.

This simple habit helped new viewers know that they were welcome to chat and participate, which led to Brad’s chatroom being highly active during his streams, which led to a community being built among Brad’s followers.

Fun Fact

Over 30 subscribers have sent Brad games in the mail to give away on his stream. It’s made his channel a sort of grab-bag for followers who like to buy games for other followers. While it was completely unexpected, it’s opened yet another fun pathway to community participation.

Notes from Chris

Episode 571

For Brad Driscoll and millions of others, video games are a pathway not only for fun but also for finding friends and communities. The only thing was, these friendships and communities built over games couldn’t be transmitted across countries or continents—at least, not in the early years—so when Brad’s best friend and college roommate moved to Tokyo, he wasn’t sure how they were going to continue to connect.

That is, until they discovered Twitch. By streaming his gaming on this new website under the name Dinky Dana, Brad could still interact with his friend all the way across the world—and they could even talk with only a twenty-second delay. Time zones were now an issue, but technology enabled their close friendship to survive.

It also produced an unexpected side hustle.

Brad began to notice random strangers subscribing to his channel and watching his streams. Lots of them. It was weird, he thought, but also…. pretty cool.

He started paying attention to other streams and noticed some people appeared to be making pretty good money by offering premium subscriptions for anywhere from $2-10 per month. These people would host subscriber-only streams, giveaways, and all sorts of community activities.

Brad wanted in on the streaming source of course. After all, the thought of making money while playing video games was… well… the dream.

But to get to that point, he’d have to work for it.

Around June of 2014, just three months after signing up for Twitch, Brad took on an enormous challenge: 365 days of streaming. He committed to at least three hours of streams per night for an entire year. His local friends weren’t exactly big fans of Brad being busy every night, but the Twitch community loved it. [What a challenge: some people exercise every day for a year or train for marathons. Brad thought: man, I’m going to do something harder: play those games whether I feel like it or not.]

It was a difficult year, lots of hard work engaging with followers and creating streaming plans, and he almost broke the streak a few times. But by the end, Brad had increased his follower count from a humble 3,000 to over 30,000. This put him in the top 1,000 Twitch streamers at the time.

At the height of his streaming days in 2015 and 2016, Brad was bringing in $3,000 per month from paying subscribers, which was actually more than he was making from his job at a cybersecurity company.

Brad still streams several times per week and has a large community of gamers that tune in, but he’s slowed his streaming roll in the last year to build a new full-time business with his brother: a marketing agency. Not only that, but he’s still bringing in $1,000-3,000 per month in subscriptions per month. All those years training as a gamer have paid off in more than just extra lives.

Database Expert Helps Students Solve Real Problems

What It’s About

A teacher who goes the extra mile for her students.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

So if it’s working and selling through Amazon, why take matters in her own hands and design her own course on her own website? Well, first of all, she can sell her course for a lot more money and keep more of the money. She’s also less reliant on the “gods of Amazon.” If your business is dependent on a single sales channel, you don’t have a business, you have a codependent relationship.

Fun Fact

Sylvia’s job teaching worked out as a net loss for her financially. But the experience gave her a business to create a huge financial plus over the coming years!

Notes from Chris

Episode 570

Sylvia Moestl Vasilik is passionate about her career as a database consultant. Over the last 15 years, she’s built a portfolio of clients and created databases for titans of industry like Microsoft and T-Mobile. It’s safe to say that she’s good at what she does.

As her career progressed, Sylvia felt a growing itch to teach what she knew. Since 2009 she’d been sporadically sharing her real-world knowledge on her blog, Databases Are Fun, but she wanted a more concrete way to help the next generation of database engineers and architects.

First, she was able to land a side-position teaching a SQL Server Certificate course as part of The University of Washington professional education program. Here she taught people the standard database language, SQL, and gave people a foundation for their future careers. Her students paid lots of money, over $1,000 per person, to attend the course—and they came from far and wide.

But, Sylvia couldn’t help but feel something was missing.

She had realized that 90% of the skills the students needed weren’t being taught in the course. Like many education programs, it gave an overview of the basics but rarely went to depth on any individual topics. This meant her students were prepared for entry-level requirements but would struggle with more complex tasks.

While teaching the course, Sylvia began to toy with ideas of how she could help her students go to more depth. She thought about writing a book or creating a course the students could use to get extra practical experience. But wasn’t sure if it would be worth the time or investment, so she kept it on the back burner.

However, when the course was finally over, she received lots of emails from students asking about how they could get more practical experience. They’d realized their education wasn’t enough, and they were hungry to improve their skills. This confirmed to Sylvia creating a product would be a worthwhile venture, and she set out to write a book.

Her book was called SQL Practice Problems. It gave students real challenges. These weren’t the hypothetical assignments of university textbooks, but actual problems developers and engineers would face in their day-to-day lives. They started at the beginners level and moved their way through to advanced problems.

Sylvia also stayed in constant contact with the students who bought her book. She included her email in every copy and answered any questions she was sent. Keeping contact allowed her to request reviews to include on Amazon, and gather information about what students were looking for. In fact, she started getting so many questions, she decided to progress her side hustle even further and increase the value she was delivering.

Sylvia decided to adapt her book into an online course. Students would still get access to her book of 57 SQL problems, but she also offered additional services. These came in the form of video tutorials, email support, an additional 40 practice problems and free updates.

Since the start of 2018, Sylvia has made $13,508 from her side hustle. $11,052 from selling her book on Amazon and $2,456 from direct sales on her course page.

One of her goals is to create a gamified version of her course that rewards people with achievements as they progress throughout. She’s aware that people often buy materials and courses with good intentions but never use them, so she wants to find ways to keep them engaged. You don’t just learn by osmosis, you learn by doing. As she continues with her mission, her mission should continue to pay good rewards.

This Standing Desk Costs Just $37

What It’s About

A side hustle that really stands on its own!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Just because Arthur and JP have startup backgrounds doesn’t mean everything was seamless. As JP reminisces, “We’ve made some big mistakes, and we’ve learned a lot, but we always knew that we had a product that would sell. And it’s so important to get a product out there even if it isn’t perfect because as soon as you can release your product, you can start getting feedback on it.”

Fun Fact

According to the UK’s National Health Service, the more time people spend sedentary (i.e. sitting at a desk), the more likely they are to see an increase in serious health issues like diabetes or cardiovascular stress. In a fun twist, it looks like side hustling could be good for your health since it means you’ll spend less time at your desk and more time…well, hustling!

Notes from Chris

Episode 569

We’ve heard that sitting at work all day is linked to a whole host of negative consequences for our bodies. But can we help it? JP Lockwood and his business partner, Arthur Maisonnier, seem to think so.

JP, met Arthur at a conference in London called Escape the City in the Fall of 2016. They bonded over their shared love of tea and side hustling as they continued to work on their individual projects. JP was consulting with a financial technology company, while Arthur was in the private equity field.

They knew they wanted to create a product together, they just didn’t know what it would be. By January 2017, they both moved to working out of London’s Google Campus, a free co-working space that anyone to use. They were both working on their respective projects but would get together to brainstorm ideas over coffee, lunch, or any free time they had.

Inspiration struck when they got tired of sitting at their desks, but had nowhere else to work. Between hours sitting down together, and even more hours trying to find a high enough table that would be a comfortable workspace to stand at, their side hustle idea was just waiting to unfold.

According to the National Health Service, an accumulative 31 million days of work were lost in 2013 through back, neck, and muscle problems. Poor posture and working conditions are the second highest reason for sickness at work, and it costs the UK economy £14bn a year. At the same time, standing desks are pricey and can run you anywhere from a couple hundred to a couple thousand, and most models out there aren’t portable enough to take with you to a co-working station. There simply wasn’t a portable and cost-effective solution on the market.

Enter the Deskmate, a foldable platform that turns any table into a standing desk. After three days of coffee-filled brainstorming, the duo realized that a solution to this problem could be easily realized if they could just design something that was light enough for a daily commute, but sturdy enough to hold a desktop. Arthur’s background in engineering helped them create a blueprint for an easy, foldable platform.

The best part was since the material to make their desks was just an incredibly sturdy cardboard, they could price their product at 1/10th of the cheapest standing desks available on the market: £29.00 ($37.63 USD).

Within their first year, they sold 1,000 Deskmates, but a shift in their marketing strategy has been yielding some high returns. Just a couple of weeks ago, they had a marketing firm in Barcelona request an order for 2000 units—essentially, twice the number of Deskmates that JP and Arthur sold for the entirety of 2017!

While they’re not exactly sure what the future holds for them, JP and Arthur know that it probably doesn’t involve a lot of sitting around… they’ll be too busy coming up with their next product or working at their day job! They deserve a standing desk ovation.

Weekly Recap: Top 3 Tips for SEO

Notes from Chris

Episode 568

LISTENER QUESTIONS, THEMES, & TAKEAWAYS:

Last week, I was out and about all over the world, but it’s always good to come back home. In today’s Recap, I want to share some notes on SEO (Search Engine Optimization) from a guest expert. We received a great listener question, and rather than try to answer it myself, I went to an expert.

And I’ve also got a story to share with you—a helpful lesson perhaps—on this topic of whether or not you should tell your family about your side hustle or not. This came up a couple days ago in Ep. 566 – Accountant Generates $10,000/Month In Sweat Equity, and I’d like to touch on that a little bit as well. But first, let’s hear from Abigail and her question on SEO:

  • Abigail: “Hi Chris! I have now listened to the Side Hustle audiobook more than 10 times. I was desperate for a business coach before I read your book, and now I’m already making more money than before on my existing business using these steps. I haven’t even got through the 27 days yet and launched my new idea. Thank you so much for breaking this down I feel so much less overwhelmed and way more productive.I wondered what advice you could offer about SEO and getting my website found. Do you know of anyone who offers training or advice in this area, or do you think it is worth paying someone to do it for me?

I run a baking business—so I work in a saturated market—but my products are unique and I am learning how to create “offers” (I can’t believe it didn’t occur to me before). I just want to be able to reach my audience.

Any advice you could offer would be amazing. Thanks so much—this really has been life-changing for me!”

Congrats, Abigail! Let’s see if we can get your offerings in front of more people. To get some info, I went to my expert on SEO, Rand Fishkin, the founder of Moz and SparkToro and the author of Lost and Founder. Here’s what he had to say with regards to SEO:

My best advice is to start by checking out a few free resources:

Tune in to today’s Weekly Recap to learn more about Rand’s tips for a strong SEO strategy and to hear a story from Laura Simms regarding sharing your side hustle with your family!

Resistance Is Futile! Brooklyn Fitness Fanatics Sell “No Days Off” Exercise Bands

What It’s About

Resistance bands for the person who likes to take their fitness on the go!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Steve has some advice for anyone who wants to start a similar side hustle. First, do your research and don’t rush to go with a supplier just because it’s easy. It’s crucial to get a reliable supplier that ships high-quality product every time. Second, never reinvent the wheel. There is always a proven method, strategy, or practice for everything, start by following it before trying to create your own way. This saves you time, money, and of course, tons of headaches and sleepless nights.

Fun Fact

James, Steve’s business partner, used to train Justin Combs, the son of Sean Combs. One day, Justin said it would be cool to send some NDObands over. So that night, Steve was up until 4 in the morning designing unique COMBS Enterprises and REVOLT NDObands for Diddy and Justin. How often do you get to send your product to Diddy’s house!?

Notes from Chris

Episode 567

Steve Clair has been a real estate broker in Brooklyn for close to a decade. Running around to all of those properties means that he’s putting in quite a workout on a daily basis, so naturally, fitness ranks high on his list of priorities. But when you’re as busy as Steve is, you get in a workout whenever you can and you find ways to maximize your efforts without much fuss. And that’s where our story begins…

In 2017, Steve and his workout buddy, Max, were training for the Brooklyn Marathon. That meant that a large chunk of their weeks were spent pounding the pavement, but as any good runner knows, building up your distance running alone is a rookie mistake. New marathon runners also switch up their food and water intake, sleep habits, and consider the role of strength training in their plan. Strength training not only targets the muscles needed to keep you going the distance, it’s also great at correcting any muscle imbalances and improves your running form.

When you’re the kind of guy who is always on the go like Steve, resistance bands are your best friend. They’re far more portable than a home gym, and you can bust them out in the office, on your daily commute, or pretty much anywhere you can find a 2-3 ft radius. They’re also good to use following a run, and Steve and Max got into the habit of wrapping these resistance bands around their wrists, bringing their post-run workouts with them on the go.

They just had one complaint: they wanted more color options to choose from! Since they clearly weren’t busy enough with working full-time jobs and engaging in rigorous pre-marathon training, they decided to source them themselves and try to sell them. Their goal? Produce and sell high-grade latex rubber resistance bands that could double as a wristband and come in a multitude of snazzy colors.

They called their side hustle NDOband (or No Days Off band) because when the gym is right there on your wrist, there’s really no excuse.

The first big jump in sales and brand awareness came when Steve received an email from an editor at POPSUGAR, at the end of 2017. She’d stumbled on his Instagram posts and wanted to be the first to write about the product. Naturally, Steve and Max were thrilled! Once the POPSUGAR article went live on January this year, Steve’s website traffic went up to around 500 visitors a day for almost a solid week, and the site had about 80 sales over the course of a single weekend. Talk about a sprint! That was when they felt that people were finally starting to notice the brand.

The NDOband team is now looking to expand into corporate wellness in the fall by providing lunchtime stretch sessions for companies and supplying NDObands for employees. Their goal is to help making the sedentary office worker a thing of the past. At the same time, the team is also developing smaller bands that focus on lower body workouts. They might call it the NDO booty band!

To date, sales from NDOband have been bringing in roughly $1,200 a month, and now that they’ve launched bootcamps, that brings in an additional $1,500 every month. What excites them the most is that both of these revenue streams are growing from month to month.

The most rewarding aspect of the side hustle for Steve is the experience of building his own brand from the bottom up. It means a lot because he was able to combine fitness and fashion into a business. Furthermore, seeing so many people, including many well-known influencers, adopt his movement fuels Steve to hustle harder every single day.

Accountant Generates $10,000/Month In Sweat Equity

What It’s About

A side hustle that’s no sweat!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Rebecca suggests working with a reputable chemist if you want to get a beauty or skincare product off the ground. They’ll help you with fine-tuning your formula, making sure you’re FDA compliant and have product testing done. Having a chemist is a one-time investment but might save you the additional costs from trial and error.

Fun Fact

Everyone needs a deodorant that works, but Rebecca was on the hunt for one that also doesn’t leave any residue. At one particular CPA networking event, she went over to give a friend a hug. She was wearing a sleeveless dress at the time and left an armpit print on his black suit. She was mortified! That’s when she became gung-ho about creating a deodorant that works AND doesn’t leave any residue.

Notes from Chris

Episode 566

Rebecca So struggled her entire adult life looking for a deodorant that worked. Her dream was to find a product that didn’t just help with body odor, but also left no residue or white marks. Her hunt for this elusive product came to a head one day at a networking event for her industry.

Rebecca is a CPA at a firm in Los Angeles. Accounting is traditionally a corporate industry where everyone dresses in professional clothing. At the event, she bumped into a good friend of hers and gave him a big hug. She was wearing a sleeveless dress at the time and, when she let go, was mortified! She’d left a white armpit stain on his expensive black suit. It was an embarrassing and emotionally taxing moment.

That was the day she’s had enough. She knew there must be deodorant out there that solved this problem. She tried everything she could find. Even resorting to aluminum-based deodorants that would leave her underarms stinging for hours. On the odd occasion where she found a product that worked, it would stop doing so after a few weeks of use.

She was fed up! With nothing available on the market, Rebecca decided to work up a sweat creating her own deodorant brand. She knew she already had one customer, herself!

What perspired from that initial thought became SWAY Detox Deodorant. Her very first side hustle!

She experimented with a range of natural products over her kitchen sink. However, it wasn’t until a small adult acne breakout that she had her eureka moment. It came in the form of apple cider vinegar!

Using vinegar to treat acne is a well known natural remedy. One day while applying some to her face, she thought, “why not splash a little on my underarms too.” To her surprise, it actually worked. No odor and no unsightly white marks under her arms. She’d accidentally stumbled onto the main ingredient for her deodorant brand.

From humble beginnings in her kitchen sink just 7 months ago to a successful business. SWAY Detox Deodorant is now generating 10K/month in sales. While that sounds like a lot, Rebecca is still working for sweat equity at the moment. Every extra dollar has been put back into the business to build the brand and help the product grow.

With all that money coming in, it’s a good thing Rebecca knows a good accountant… that would be… herself!
