Weekly Recap: Making Time for What Matters

Notes from Chris

Episode 638

THEMES & TAKEAWAYS:

At the end of my yoga class the other day, the instructor said something about how “your body appreciates you making time for it.” I know as well as you that it can be hard to find the time for yoga or running or hitting the gym—but when you make time, you’re usually better off.

It’s this weird paradox of how the things we need to do for ourselves tend to get de-prioritized in comparison to other peoples’ needs or the demands being placed on us—yet if we’re not caring for ourself, sooner or later we’re not going to be a great help for anyone else.

Naturally, I think this is true in the world of your income-generating project, the one you do apart from your job. Sometimes it’s tough to find time.

What will you be better off with having found a way to make time for this week?

To hear more, check out today’s Weekly Recap!

Jiu-Jitsu Instructor Pins Down Mobile Workout Tool

What It’s About

Inspired by his coach, a Jiu-Jitsu instructor takes his training to the next level.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

If you’re going through a manufacturer, Jason recommends having a set of questions ready to ensure you’re working with a real factory and not just a third-party company who’s just out to take a commission.

Fun Fact

This is Jason’s second fitness based side hustle. His first was creating grappling equipment for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu!

Notes from Chris

Episode 637

Jason Gulati still remembers the moment he saw the most amazing training tool. He was a teenager in a gymnastics class, and his coach wheeled out what can only be described as a contraption. It was a large, flat block of wood which lay on the floor, with two metal poles standing out up to waist height. Each pole had two smaller but thicker wooden blocks at the top.

His coach began to balance his weight on the blocks and contorted his body in strong and powerful ways; handstands, dips, levers, and v-sits. He could do them all using only this simple too. And, when Jason finally got his turn to play with it, he instantly fell in love with it. But, being a teenager, he didn’t quite have the money to get one. So, he’d have to wait a few years.

Fast forward to adult life, where Jason, who was then working as a full-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor, had a little money in his pocket. He decided he wouldn’t just buy one of these training contraptions—which he discovered are called Handstand Canes—but instead, he’d build his own and improve on the design.

He wanted to replicate the same tool but make it suitable for home use. Meaning it would need to be lightweight and collapsible so that it could be easily stored under the bed or transported to your favorite workout spot.

He found some DIY YouTube videos on how to create handstand canes and spend his free time tinkering with the design. When he finished, he showed his fitness friends what he’d created, and they liked his design. A handful of them even asked if Jason could make one for them, too.

This was when he was struck by his business idea. As he was whittling away pieces of wood, he thought if his friends were asking him to create the product, there had to be more people out there who would want this. So, he began to look at how he could create this product at scale. And in order to do that

After a few weeks on Kickstarter, Jason had smashed his target and raised $84,000 for BaseBlocks. There was a clear market out there dying to get their hands on this cool piece of equipment.

He experienced some pretty real setbacks when it came time to getting product from his manufacturer on time, but it was all worth it in the end. These days, Jason is selling around $20,000 in stock per month, at around a 40% profit margin, through his Shopify website ($8,000/month in profit). His orders from China are much more frequent and reliable than in the initial set up process, and he’s got it down to a formula.

By facing the challenges head-on, he persevered and saw his fitness product earning sweat equity and a lot of cash month after month.

Canadian Mom Rolls Out Supportive Side Hustle

What It’s About

How an accident can lead to opportunity!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Adrianna had something really great to say to anyone looking to follow in her footsteps:

“Find a niche product to rent out that has the following characteristics: expensive for the end user to own but cheap to rent, relatively simple functionality (maintenance and service is straightforward and can be done at home by someone with limited mechanical abilities), users only need it temporarily, can be handled by one person and fits into even a small vehicle.”

Fun Fact

Mobility devices have been used in some capacity for centuries. For example, Phillip II, a 6th century Spanish King, was reported to have used a type of wheelchair.

The first mobility scooter was invented in 1968 by a plumber in Michigan who wanted to help a family member with Multiple Sclerosis.

Notes from Chris

Episode 636

Surgery can be a transformative experience. We come out differently—either physically or emotionally—once we, or someone we love, has been under the knife and sewn back up again. Adrianna Coleman, a full-time mom from Canada, found herself driving home with a life-changing side hustle in the trunk of her car.

After intensive surgery, Adrianna’s husband was unable to bear any weight on his foot. Even the slightest strain resulted in soaring pain which made crutches impractical and even a little dangerous. So, he opted to try something new.

He ordered what’s known as a knee walker. If you’ve never seen one, it’s basically a scooter where you put your weight on the knee of the injured leg and push with the other. It has handlebars, brakes, and padding to make it much more comfortable and practical than crutches.

While attending lots of different appointments, check-ups, or even just the grocery store, Adrianna and her husband would find themselves talking about the knee walker to other patients. Entire waiting rooms of people would want to know where they’d found the knee walker, how much they cost and how they could get their knees on one too.

This got them thinking about the potential for a business. There was a large market of people who had no idea about these knee walkers or how to access them, why not create a service for them?

Adrianna set herself a budget of around $3,000, and she named her idea Recovery Rentals. She wanted to create a strong internet presence and look professional from the outset, but she also didn’t want to lose a lot of money if it didn’t work out.

Adrianna admits going into doctor’s offices was scary at first. But she overcame the fear through belief in her product. She knew it would help patients—after all, she’d seen it first hand—and it would be worse for everyone if she didn’t share her idea. Many of the receptionists agreed and let her leave her materials.

Two weeks after her knee walkers arrived, Adrianna had her first order online. Then, two days later, the next two came in. She was already fully booked with her first three units of inventory rented! So, using her side hustle savvy, Adrianna invested the money into more stock so she could take more orders.

As Recovery Rentals has grown, so has Adrianna’s relationship with local doctors. Doctors love having an alternative to crutches to recommend, and these referrals have become the number one source of income for the business. Because, who doesn’t do what their doctor tells them, right?

Recovery Rental’s profits have grown every year since its inception. In 2015, they earned $24,000 which has grown to $56,000 in 2017—not bad at all for a side hustle that only takes her 10 hours/week to maintain!

Looking to the future, Adrianna wants to double down on the franchise side of the business and help take Recovery Rentals all over North America. She wants to help immobile patients cruise to recovery without using those complicated crutches.

Trader Joe’s Sign Artist Earns $43,200 Selling Tea-Stained Prints

What It’s About

Utilizing a free resource helps a new graduate pay off student loans and move out of his mom’s basement.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Like others, Elliott struggled a bit with pricing. But, once he broke down the cost of materials per print, the time he spent tearing and staining paper, creating designs, and printing orders, he landed on a price that satisfied both his customers and himself. For other side hustlers, Elliott says that “it is important to figure out how much time you spend preparing your product and come up with a fair hourly wage to reflect that. Your time spent working is valuable and you should factor this into the final cost.”

Fun Fact

The first selfie in history was taken in Philadelphia in 1839 by a chemist-slash-amateur photographer named Robert Cornelius. The original #nofilter photo took over one minute to produce since that’s how long the process took from lens removal to image capturing. While the photo exists in black and white, it would probably look pretty good in Valencia, too.

Notes from Chris

Episode 635

It was a sunny spring day and Elliott Addesso, a Trader Joe’s sign artist from Virginia, was in a bit of a pickle. It was his mom’s birthday that weekend, and he needed a gift. But what do you buy the woman who has everything? Probably something meaningful, handmade, or all of the above. Fortunately, Elliott was creative and worked well under pressure.

In college, he had experimented with staining paper with tea and painting over it to create images. Elliott had always liked the aesthetic, but never really found the opportunity to bring it to life. For his mom’s present, he decided to try printing an antique, royalty-free image he had found online of an 1800’s illustration of some root vegetables on to some old tea-stained paper. It worked better than he had imagined—and looked fantastic framed in his mother’s kitchen.

Capitalizing on his success, Elliott started to create a library of royalty-free, unlicensed imagery to use as digital collages printed on tea-stained paper. He figured that if he could make and sell a few prints a month, he could use the money to start paying off his student loans faster. Not only that but at the time he was living in his mom’s basement. As nice as it was to be close to family, the basement of the home he’d grown up in was just a little too close for comfort.

Some extra money would help up save up money for a deposit on a place of his own. Someplace where no one would ask what time he’d be coming home that night…

At first, Elliott was intimidated about starting an online shop. Would anyone want to buy his art? But when he went to look at the listings on Etsy, he noticed that there were several successful shops that were printing public domain images and photoshopping them over antique dictionary pages. And if they could do it and make money from it, so could he—and with a tea-stained twist!

Elliott didn’t wait oolong time to start setting up his own Etsy shop, TeaStainedMadness. After spending some time creating prints after work, he uploaded them, sat back, and waited.

One day, while checking his email, Elliott noticed something he hadn’t seen before. He had received an e-mail with the subject “Etsy Transactions” and realized he had made his first sale. It was an image of a pug riding a whale, and the majority of sales that soon followed were dogs riding whales, narwhals, or unicorns.

It wasn’t what he had expected, but he decided to follow the pattern of what was selling and listened to buyer’s requests. Which was basically more dogs on top of things. Sales for his dog-themed tea prints really started to pour in… or was he steeped in St. Bernards?

In his second year, he more than doubled his first year of sales with 2,500 orders, and he’s making about $3,600/month. All of this is built on startup costs of just $300, to buy tea bags, bubble mailers, and pay for listing fees. Remember, the art that he’s using to make the prints is antique and therefore free from copyright.

Elliott still works as a sign artist at Trader Joe’s, but he’s shifted to part-time to devote more attention to Tea Stained Madness. Sales of his prints are so successful they’ve become his main source of income—and even helped him pay off a quarter of his student debt much faster than expected. More importantly, he’s been able to move out of his mom’s basement into a great apartment with the perfect studio room for creating his prints.

While there’s never enough time in the day, Elliott wouldn’t be where he is now if he had waited for everything to be just right. Yesterday it was starting an Etsy shop, today it’s adding art shows and craft fairs to the roster. Whatever he does next, side hustling seems like Elliott’s cup of tea.

Words of Wisdom

One thing that I thought was really brilliant on Ronak’s part was setting a hard limit on her investment and risk. The $10,000 she invested was what she felt she would be okay never recouping, and she stuck to it. It’s important to remember that success is never guaranteed and that there’s always a risk starting something up. Don’t ever feel that you have to go more all in than you’re comfortable with!

Fun Fact

Here are some fun facts about neurons! To start, there are A LOT of them—approximately 100 billion neurons make up the big smart brain of yours. They’re also even smaller than the period at the end of this sentence. But don’t let their size fool you, just one of these little guys can go as fast as 268 km/hr. Now that is impressive!

Notes from Chris

Episode 634
By day, Dr. Ronak Mehta is a physician at a Veteran Affairs Hospital in Utah. As a doctor, she’s spent a good chunk of her life helping those who need it. More recently though, she decided to get into the side hustle game and do something for herself. And the beginning of this story takes us back to her time in medical school, the better part of a decade ago.

While studying, Ronak wanted to help children understand the human body. She decided the best way to do that was to write an educational kids book. She titled it “The Extraordinary Expedition Into The Human Body.” The goal was to create a book that was similar to the old Dr. Seuss stories. The characters in the book would be walking, talking, cartoon versions of organs in the human body.

However, Ronak wasn’t an illustrator. Not by a long shot! So, for the illustrations, she turned to Upwork, a popular outsourcing website. There, she found an illustrator who was able to create the characters of heart, lung, bladder, and uterus. She decided on an ebook format for easy distribution but, alas, unlike Dr. Seuss, it wasn’t a best seller.

Still, the lackluster performance didn’t phase her. She thought of one of Dr. Seuss’ best quotes:

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself… any direction you choose”—so it was time to steer in a new direction.

The organ illustrations weren’t created in vein. Ronak had fallen in love with the cartoon organ characters. Her hope was to someday create plush toys in their likeness. She thought they could serve as a cute get well present for someone who was hospitalized or preparing for surgery.

The idea stayed with her through graduation and didn’t go away even after years of working as a physician. But it wasn’t until earlier this year that she decided to bring her characters to life. She decided to call the business, Nerdbugs.

To get things going Ronak set aside $10,000. It was a lot of money but she looked at is as an educational expense. If NerdBugs didn’t work out, then so be it. She’d still be OK, and always had her full-time job as a physician.

With the assistance of some Google Adwords and some Amazon Sponsored Ads, Ronak ended up making a sale her first day. But at the time of recording, that was just over 3 months ago! Sales have continued to trickle in and, over the past three months, she has tripled sales each month selling several hundred Nerdbugs to people all around the world.

Most sales have come from people buying them as gifts for folks in the hospital, or that are soon to head into surgery. And despite only being three months in, Ronak expects that that initial $10,000 investment will be fully returned to her within the next two months.

Once that milestone is reached, she plans to extend her line of products to include adorable plush versions of a pancreas, liver, and bladder. And she also hopes to partner with Children’s hospitals so that she can give Nerdbugs as a donation to hospitalized children.

Ronak, thanks for sharing your side hustle story with us. The first 3 months have already been successful for you, and for the future, our team was reminded of another Dr Seuss quote:

“You’re off to Great Places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, So… get on your way!”

And will you succeed? Yes! You will, indeed! (98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed.)

"Going into this entire endeavor I told myself, I will invest ‘X amount’ of dollars, and I need to be ok now with losing that because there is always a chance that this will not succeed. The Clothes Dryer That Changed a Family Forever

What It’s About

A side hustle that’s as easy as wash, dry, repeat!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Pay attention to this—

“When it came to selling, the process wasn’t all that complicated. He always gave the appliances a good cleaning, then took newer, better pictures, and wrote up a clear, information-packed description. Sometimes he even repainted the tops if they looked pretty faded. And when it came time to list the item, he’d price it just a hair below the average price for similar models to help move the item quickly.”

Variations of this are still possible in this day and age. You probably won’t get rich, but if you need money soon, this works. (Let us know if you try it!)

Fun Fact

LaJuan’s part-time airline job gets him free flights all the time. A few years ago, he and his wife flew to Thailand in business class for $75 total… saving nearly $12,000 in expenses. Even though it’s not a high paying job, it clearly has its perks!

Notes from Chris

Episode 633

LaJuan Stoxstill-Diggs is a family man. He married the love of his life when he was twenty, had three kids by twenty-one, and worked hard to provide for them. Finances were tight in those early years, and they would soon become far more challenging.

In early 2007, on the cusp of the 2008 recession, LaJuan was let go from his government job as the economy started to fold in on itself. Over the next two months, he submitted over two dozen job applications, but what he found was that no one was hiring.

Thankfully, LaJuan’s brother owned a moving company and was able to supply him with some contract work now and then. Even when times are tough, there’s always someone willing to pay for manual labor.

Clients were frequently offering excess furniture to LaJuan’s brother, which he gladly accepted. One gig, a client offered a clothes dryer to LaJuan’s brother, who then offered it to LaJuan. He almost said ‘no’. After all, he had a perfectly good dryer at home—why would he need another? It was just going to take up space.

But then his brother said something that would change his life forever: “Just try to sell it. You can keep the money.”

Being three months out of work and not expecting a job to come along anytime soon, LaJuan accepted. He didn’t know if anything would come of it, but he figured he might as well try. LaJuan’s first thought was to list the dryer for sale in the local newspaper. That ad would take a few dollars, as well as a couple days to actually be published, but he’d had success there before. But LaJuan’s wife had another idea: Craigslist.

LaJuan hadn’t used Craigslist for much of anything before. He’d looked around in the jobs section, but he never thought of it as a marketplace to sell things on. Again, he wasn’t certain it would work, but it was free and instant—so why not?

Within a few hours of listing the dryer, someone arrived at LaJuan’s house and gave him $75 for it. LaJuan was ecstatic—and also frustrated. It sold so fast that he realized he should have listed it for at least $50 more!

His mind began turning over like the permanent press spin cycle on that dryer. He spent the rest of the night reading all the listings for washers and dryers. Within a couple days, he was able to confirm his suspicion: people were selling used appliances for far cheaper than they were worth… and if he could be quick to buy them, he could flip them for a profit.

To test the idea, LaJuan called his family members around town and asked if they had any used appliances they wanted to sell. The next morning he picked up two dryers for $50 each, listed them both on Craigslist, and sold them both for $120 each.

It was the easiest money he’d ever made. But more importantly, it gave LaJuan hope that he could provide for his family through the recession and beyond.

LaJuan still helped his brother with moving gigs, but he no longer felt the urgency of applying for every job under the sun. He’d found something he could earn real money with, and he felt in control of his circumstances.

Day after day, he scoured Craigslist pages for his local area. He searched for appliances that were under $100, with two criteria in mind: they looked like something he’d use in his own home, and he knew he could profit at least $50 from. In under two weeks, LaJuan had made over $1,000. He couldn’t believe it—but he wasn’t about to stop and ask questions. It was hustle time!

About a year into the hustle, LaJuan had his first $5,000 month. He’d been so busy raising his kids and flipping appliances that he hadn’t even realized that he had surpassed his government job salary.

As the years went by, LaJuan expanded into flipping refrigerators, espresso machines, studio equipment, computers, and a variety of other items that he learned he could profit from. There were even a few years he surpassed six figures in profit! It was more money than he’d ever made.

It’s been eleven years since LaJuan sold his first dryer, and a lot has changed. He now has part-time jobs as a real estate agent and an airline employee. Both gigs have provided different kinds of value to his family, including cheap airfare and free standby tickets. Thanks to his 20-hour-per-month job at the airport, he’s often able to fly to see his son play football at Cornell University.

And that experience really characterizes LaJuan’s approach this whole time. It wasn’t about creating an empire or always hitting six figures—it was about providing for his family and helping others do the same. There’s more than one way to accomplish almost any goal. He just didn’t expect to find his answer in a common household appliance.

Quote of the Day
"A person has to have their reason for hustling in order to find success in flipping through Craigslist or any other online platform. In the beginning, I did everything so my family could eat and we could have life’s basic essentials for another day. Before I knew it, I looked up and realized all of our needs were met."

Sound Engineer Makes $80,000/Year Handing Out Free Maps

What It’s About

Maps bring about a healthy profit for an ex-sound engineer.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

The role of personality in the world of salesmanship is pretty important, but you shouldn’t try to force yourself into doing something that feels unnatural. Whenever possible, find a way to play to your strengths. Find your own North Star, compass point, side hustle without borders, etc.

Fun Fact

The Greeks are credited with making the first map of the world, in 6th century BC. The map was drawn of the then known world, with the assumption that the earth was cylindrical.

Episode 632

When you stay at a hotel in an unfamiliar city, how do you know where to eat, or go shopping, or maybe even to go relax at a nearby spa? Sure, you could look up possible restaurants or shops surrounding the hotel on your phone. But this takes time, and it can be confusing trying to figure out where the place is located.

Wouldn’t it be easier to have the restaurants and businesses located close to the hotel all mapped out in one place?

That’s where Front Desk USA maps come to the rescue! These color maps are easy to carry and use when exploring area businesses surrounding your hotel. The maps are custom drawn specifically for a particular geographic area, so they are super local to the immediate area surrounding hotels. They’re provided to all hotels in an area, at no cost, so they can be made available free of charge to their guests.

The maps are the creation of Tom Shott, who was working as a sound engineer. Growing up in a family-owned media company, Tom had an interest in print media and advertising. He believed that hotels have an endless need for visitor information available for their guests. He and his wife now publish maps in the Houston, Beaumont, and Lake Charles, Texas areas—currently issuing 7 maps.

So how does Tom make money providing maps to hotels and their guests for free? By selling advertising space o them. Area restaurants and other businesses purchase the benefit of having their ad displayed on the maps. According to the Front Desk USA website, their maps are the go-to information guide for city visitors. One area map is typically distributed to 20 to 30 hotels. Thousands of hotel guests view their maps each day. This buys area businesses exposure to customers. Hotels benefit by providing their guests with information to the number one question they are asked: “Where’s a good place to eat around here?”

Each letter-sized map contains space for 18 ads and is printed once or twice a year. Each advertisement generates about $700 per year. That works out to $10,000+ per year, per map. Now that Tom and his wife publish 7 maps, their income is approximately $80,000 per year.

For someone with sales experience, Tom believes this is the perfect side hustle. He’ll take care of the map design and office work, leaving side hustlers the ability to focus on building relationships with their local businesses.

For him and his family, this project has allowed them to map out their own success story!

Weekly Recap: Nothing is Sacred, So Look Out for Yourself

Notes from Chris

Episode 631

THEMES & TAKEAWAYS:

I sometimes talk about how you shouldn’t build your business so that it’s dependent on any one platform or network.

In this episode, I mention that we at team Side Hustle School got an experience of living that out this week. Our podcast network that we’ve partnered with since first beginning made an announcement that they were no longer going to produce podcasts!

It felt a little strange since that was their main business—it was like going to the grocery store and the store saying that they no longer sell food.

First of all: we’re not going anywhere.

We have plenty of other options to distribute the show, and your listening experience shouldn’t change at all.

Second: Nothing is sacred or permanent.

Don’t put all your trust, attention, or retirement plans in any network, platform, or company. Or even any medium—I love podcasting but everything changes.

To hear more, check out today’s Weekly Recap!

WHERE ARE THEY NOW:

This is a new segment we’re trying out with the help of side hustlers that we’ve featured in the past. Today, we have an update from Brent Vaartstra, who was featured on the show in Ep. 69.

Colorado Nutritionist Reworks Role to Get Paid Twice

What It’s About

A nutritionist uses her skills to create the job she wants.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Is there anything that Haley wishes she had done differently?

Well, Haley admits that she started on the low side of pricing because her closest comparison was based off other competitors, even though they didn’t have the same credentials, experience, or education that she did. Fortunately, she learned fairly quickly that she needed to raise her rate because of all the additional time she spent checking in with her clients, creating meal plans for them, among other things.

Fun Fact

The American food scene has undergone some pretty drastic changes over the past two decades. During this period, the public has seen the introduction of genetically modified crops, the mainstreaming of organic foods into America’s supermarkets, and the rise of chefs elevated to celebrity status within pop culture. With each passing year, more and more Americans are taking a harder look at the food that they eat and where it comes from, and Haley’s side hustle is the perfect way to capatlize on this burgeoning, healthy eating trend!

Notes from Chris

Episode 630

After finishing grad school, Haley Hughes thought that her master’s degree in dietetics was a one-way ticket to a job in a hospital or food service setting, and that’s about it. So she got a job in a Colorado hospital as their Registered Dietician. And she liked that job. She got to work with new people every day, and help them live a better life.

But, as much as she liked her job, after a few years working there, Haley knew there was more she could do. She wanted a chance to be supportive, hold her clients accountable, and coach them… for more than the 15 minutes at a time she got to spend with hospital patients.

So on a cold day, just a few months ago, Haley decided she was going to get her foot in the door. She went to leave her new business card at her favorite local coffee shop. The owner was in and asked Haley if she would be interested in doing a nutrition analysis for their menu items. She had a project going from day one! This analysis was both a lesson in time management and making bold moves to launch a side hustle. While it ended up taking a lot longer than she anticipated, it was the perfect first step and confidence booster she needed.

Next, she went to leave a card at a women’s boutique, and the owner asked if she would organize a shopping and 5k running race. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Haley went all in and said ‘Of course!’ Over 50 women showed up for the race.

She called her new venture RDRx Nutrition, and it took after that. She went from strength to strength, planning community events, column writing for the local newspaper, to recipe blogging and working with her own clients. She was learning, both from her clients and their experiences, that there were more ways to educate and promote health than just the traditional dietitian route. Not only that, but she was having way more fun doing it, too.

So far she’s averaging about $1,000 in additional monthly income. The money has helped her and her husband travel to Bora Bora, and dream about their next trip to Italy in a few months.

Tie One On for This Australian High School Teacher

What It’s About

Knowing when to give up can be tough, but this high school teacher knew when it was time to put a bow on it.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

I am a big fan of moving on! Life is short and you’re already busy, so you should spend your limited time on something you’re excited about and believe in. What do you do when you’re no longer passionate about the project you started, or you recognize that to grow it would require more time and resources you don’t have—is there a way you can profit by making a change?

Fun Fact

Croatian soldiers in the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) were one of the first documented peoples to don a necktie, which they used to keep together the collars of their shirts. French soldiers brought the look back home with them after the war, and by the 1700s, neckties were widely adopted by the upper classes, marking the time when neckties became a main feature in men’s dress.

Notes from Chris

Episode 629

Vince Massara is a high school teacher living in Victoria, Australia. On the side, he now runs a small business that helps other teachers learn more about the side hustle world. However, it was by way of his first income generating project that led him to what he’s doing today… and that’s what we’re going to look at here.

That first project was called Why Knot Ties.

Vince started Why Knot Ties on a whim. Hence the title, “Why Knot.” He thought that at worst, it would make for a funny story down the road. He pictured himself saying to his friends, “Hey, remember when I tried to sell bow ties? Wasn’t that silly.”

As whimsical as it was, Vince notes that there was an underlying reason behind it. He described it as “that feeling of being able to do almost anything when you look and feel like your best self.” He wanted to provide that feeling of confidence for people every day through Why Knot Ties.

The idea of solving new problems excited Vince, and he wanted a new challenge. He also viewed it as a cheap business school and figured that he had nothing to lose.

In less than a year, Why Not Ties was regularly earning between $500 to $1,000 a month.

Normally at this point, I would tell you what he was doing next to grow it further. But no! I warned you this was a different story—here’s what happened.

Despite making that $500-1,000/month, Vince admits he misjudged the online marketplace for fashion. The barriers were too great to truly scale. Most customers were unwilling to leave their marketplace site to buy a mid-priced bow tie.

Also, Vince fell out of love with the brand and with the fashion business in general. Even with the goal of increasing people’s confidence in mind, ultimately it didn’t feel as though he was helping anybody. Which, as an educator, is hard-wired into him.

Last but not least, you could say that he didn’t want to get tied down.

Since he went into Why Knot with a “nothing to lose” mentality, when he was no longer excited about it, he was content with giving it up. But instead of just walking away, he sold the brand and remaining inventory for $5,000. This included the website, stock, and yet-to-be published exposure in GQ magazine.

There were other benefits. Vince began incorporating the lessons learned from Why Knot Ties into the classroom. It rejuvenated his teaching and turned teacher-led innovation into his new passion.

The skills he now uses in his new side hustle, The Content Friends, are almost entirely things he learned from Why Knot. Entering the online business world, Vince noticed that referrals were by far the biggest way of getting qualified leads and new customers. Most people he spoke to who had businesses were filtering money into Facebook ads. However, most of them didn’t have a system for generating leads or referrals.

That was something Vince was able to do with Why Knot, so now he’s teaching it to others. He recently started a blog and podcast, The Smart Edupreneur, about the need for change in education through teacher-led innovation. He blogs on the topic at his personal website. His podcast, The Smart Edupreneur, can be heard there too.

The bow-tie hustle is all tied up, but Vince is moving on with a fashionable future.
