College Lecturer Profits from 3D Design Tutorials

What It’s About

Game designer designs his own freedom in the form of YouTube tutorials.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

It’s important to build your own assets (like Shane’s tutorials) so that you can handle whatever comes at you. Everyone needs options, everyone can benefit from the ability to choose for themselves how they spend their time and how they can do the work that’s important to them.

Fun Fact

Video games get more detailed and visually stunning every day. But one of the most basic is also one of the best selling. Tetris, the highly addictive tile-matching game, has sold over one hundred and seventy million copies since its release in 1984!

Notes from Chris

Episode 908

Shane Whittington, a digital art and game development lecturer in the United Kingdom, was looking for a way to help his students. They were mainly teens and young adults new to the college environment, and he wanted to help them refresh their memory of what they did in class.

One day, he created a quick tutorial to show them how to get a student version of a popular design software at home, and he posted it on YouTube. When he checked back on the video, he saw that it had gotten thousands of views—which was a lot more than his class size.

He was intrigued. He loved the fact that the video was so useful to his students, but he was also encouraged that it had also been discovered by others. He wanted to create more content and decided to officially launch his channel, now called Game Dev Academy. He didn’t waste time overthinking it … which is one of the things that he credits with his success.

He made his first video tutorial course for Maya, another kind of design software, in August of that same year. The videos were basic, there was no editing whatsoever and Shane says that you can even see him pressing stop on the screen recorder at the end of each video. He used the computer and editing software that he had at school, and his only startup costs were about $2, which he used to buy a microphone. It was worth every penny—meaning that it was terrible—but it did the job and got him up and running.

There was no business plan at this stage. Shane continued uploading periodic videos to support his lectures, but he was busy at work and didn’t pay much attention to the channel.

This was back in 2012. Fast forward nearly three years to the Summer of 2015. Shane is on his Summer break, and he visits his channel—where he is surprised to see that he has 2,000 subscribers. He didn’t even know what YouTube subscribers were, but he thought that this seemed promising. He had been thinking about updating his Maya tutorial for the 2016 version of the software and wanted to reach a broader audience.

Soon, he was regularly earning more than $350/month, and he saw a greater opportunity if he could produce content more consistently. To decide which tutorials to work on, Shane says that he thinks about his students. Most are absolute beginners who are completely new to game art and game development. If the videos are suitable for them then that they will be of interest to people wanting to learn these subjects anywhere in the world.

So far Shane has earned over £20,000 ($25,000) and he’s on track to earn over £15,000 ($19,000) this year alone. In fact, in the last couple of months, his side hustle has started making more than his teaching position. It’s allowed him to drop two days at work which helps with maintaining his sanity. It also means that he’s able to spend extra time with his kids.

In addition to a Patreon campaign and Adsense revenue, Shane has recently started selling “assets” as paid add-ons in his tutorials for people who don’t want to make or find their own. Think of assets like digital versions of arts and craft supplies. With this new income source on the rise, he hopes that by the end of the year he’ll have the option of doing it full time. He doesn’t think he’ll ever give up teaching at the college but he’d like that flexibility.

This game designer is well on his way to designing his freedom.

Longtime Friends Cook Tasty Food for Pop-Up Events

What It’s About

Two friends serve up a side hustle sharing their food and culture with others.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Ralph and Marco recommend saying “yes” to as many opportunities as you can so that you can learn and adjust as you go. When they accepted their first catering job of 50 people, they were terrified. They had never done anything like that before, but they wanted to learn and knew the only way to do that was to jump in and trust the process.

Fun Fact

Studies have shown that humans recall memories more easily and clearly when they are attached to a physical sensation as well as an emotional experience. From the sounds of war to the feeling of first touching snow, when we use our five physical senses we create stronger memories.

Food has the ability to activate multiple senses—smell, sight, and of course taste—to help us remember some of life’s most meaningful and magical moments, whether large or small.

Notes from Chris

Episode 907
Ralph Hsiao and Andrew Marco have been friends for many years. After hitting it off in college, they became roommates and coworkers at a digital media production company in Los Angeles. When they weren’t working, they’d find themselves in the kitchen cooking up various dishes to serve around the table. Friends would come over to enjoy potlucks with various dishes like burgers, pasta, tacos, and more.

Neither Ralph nor Marco were trained chefs; they were just two normal guys who enjoyed sharing food and good conversation with friends.

A few months after hosting potlucks, they took a trip to Italy for a friend’s wedding. It was on that trip that their eyes and stomachs were opened.

While enjoying Italian food, they realized how fresh everything was and how much locals and foreigners alike enjoyed indulging in Italian heritage. It gave them the inspiration to take their potluck dinners to the next level. What if they could tap into their own Filipino and Taiwanese heritage and explore more vibrant flavors to share with others?

They immediately began to cook up new ideas and brainstorm ways to enhance the potlucks. This led them to a new concept for pop-up dinners focused on Filipino and Taiwanese dishes with an LA twist. Los Angeles has a mixture of lots of different cultures and flavors and they wanted their pop-up dinners to be the same. While brainstorming around the table they also found the inspiration for their name, rctngl. As Marco and Ralph mention on their website:

“A rectangle (rctngl) is the shape of most dining tables. To us, tables represent connection. Far more than a flat surface upon which to eat, the table can be the heartbeat of a family. It’s a place to gather, talk and to reconnect.”

And thus their idea began to bake. When they started their pop-up dinners, they kept the concept small and invited a few family and friends. They wanted to gain confidence in their amateur cooking skills and get more experience in trying various cuisines. They charged a small price to cover the cost of food and equipment. As time went by, their pop-ups expanded from friends and family to friends of friends and beyond. More and more people wanted a taste of what Ralph and Marco had to offer.

When strangers began attending their dinners, they knew they were onto something. Their confidence was growing so they felt more comfortable charging more for each experience.

As their confidence and menu prices began to rise, they were able to buy better equipment to support their growing business. For pop-up dinner pricing, they typically charge $75 to $100 for a tasting menu and around $45 for a kamayan event. Catering events are based on time of the event and cost per person.

Since going full-time with their side hustle, Ralph and Marco have expanded their pop-up dinners to include several day feasts and catering events. Last month they hosted a 3-day sold out event which fed about 60 people, and they catered their first wedding for more than 100 people.

With expansion in the recipe, they have now rented a space in a commercial kitchen and began offering delivery services, with the goal of earning enough money to invest in their own brick and mortar restaurant. These two friends are on the right track for grilling a profitable business.

Software Engineer Sells 64,000 “Anne of Green Gables” eBooks

What It’s About

Engineer turns a page to a new passive income stream through old titles.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Aaron says that picking which books to publish is ultimately more art than science. It’s difficult to gauge the commercial success of each book you publish since there are many factors involved. It’s more useful to focus on tangible skills such as digital formatting, understanding how publishing platforms work and selling the books with the right message.

Fun Fact

A lot of content exists in the public domain and can be used by anyone. Many books and characters, such as those created by Disney, were originally from the public domain. It’s up to you what you do with this content—if you want, you can start a publishing business just as Aaron did.

Notes from Chris

Episode 906
It’s said that a book is worth reading if it gives you even just one idea that you can use. This has certainly been true for Michigan-based Aaron Kerr, albeit not in the way you might expect. As his wife was reading the popular Anne of Green Gables series to their daughters, she noticed that the Kindle version she was reading from had lots of errors and was poorly formatted.

The family had been buying the Kindle version of each book in the series, and this was a major disappointment. Even though there was little regret, since each book cost just 99 cents, it didn’t make sense that the available copies of such a classic were of such low quality.

Aaron knew he could do better, and he also knew that it was perfectly legal for him to do so. The copyright protection for classics such as Anne of Green Gables would typically have expired if they were old enough. This meant that such books were in the public domain and could be used in any manner.

The first thing that he did was to look on Amazon for another series of Anne of Green Gables. After purchasing a series for just $1.99, he reviewed the pages for typo errors and started to get them formatted properly. With prior experience doing Kindle formatting, this did not pose a serious challenge, although it was time-consuming.

The only actual expense that Aaron incurred was purchasing a high-quality stock photograph for $18, which he used for the book cover. He then uploaded the entire series of books onto Amazon and priced them for just $0.99. In other words, you could spend less than a dollar to download the series, not just one of the books.

To sweeten the deal, he also included in his listing links to free audiobooks which were available on the Librivox project. Anyone looking for Anne of Green Gables would see that this offer stood out.

With this effort, Aaron had went from scratching his own itch to hoping he could earn a few dollars a month. Things went as he expected at first—it sold about 20-30 copies in the next couple of days after he published the series. But the numbers increased exponentially shortly after. There was a day where the number of books sold jumped to 2,100. Then another day where he would wake up to find that he had sold over 7,300 copies.

The Anne of Green Gables series would go on to sell over 65,000 copies in four months and take the #1 spot for Overall Bestselling Book on Kindle, if only for a few minutes.

The success of the series demonstrated to Aaron that public domain publishing could become a viable side business for him. With a background in web development, he knew that he had the necessary skills to continue. Under the brand Timeless Reads, Aaron would go on to publish several other collections.

Moving forward, Aaron advises people to take advantage of digital publishing through Amazon and other platforms. With low barriers to entry and a huge market of ebook readers, lots of people can make money publishing public domain content. This has certainly proved to be true for Aaron, with him averaging $1,400/month in book royalties over six years—and occasionally a lot more during the months when he’s landed a hit.

Much of this income is entirely passive, although Aaron wants to be clear that he’s been successful because he’s continued to put out new titles. Over time, revenue from the older titles tends to dry up. Further putting his knowledge to good use, he now even has his own course on public domain publishing as well.

The best part about this adventure has been Aaron’s ability to combine his passion for publishing with his skill in technology. Having sat through bad copies of the classics, he is now able to produce quality copies of books for families to enjoy. And as a bonus, he’s been able to build a better relationship with his two daughters by reading them many of the books. It’s a timeless—yet modern—example of creative thinking applied to action.

Eco-Friendly Candles Produce Smoldering Profits

What It’s About

A lit side hustle that doesn’t just blow smoke!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Find a problem to solve, and solve it, no matter how small it might seem. Sometimes the best answers are the simple ones. The next steps would be to save a bit of money, make a prototype and find some events to sell it and get customer reactions. Then go from there!

Fun Fact

Wax candles were invented by the Egyptians around 3000 BC. Back then, they were used purely to provide light but today people by candles for many reasons. They help change the mood of a room, alleviate stress and fill a home with beautiful fragrances. They’ve become so appealing that the candle market in the USA is now worth over $3 billion a year.

Notes from Chris

Episode 905

Cynthia and Chris Hileman met years ago during a job interview. They both worked in sales and Chris was interviewing Cynthia for a position at his company in Florida. They hit it off right away, and instead of just becoming co-workers, they ended up starting a relationship. A few years later, they got married and started a family.

When their daughter came along, Cynthia decided to take a break from work and become a stay at home mom. Chris kept his job, which by that time was as an account manager in the banking industry.

They’d talked for a while about starting some kind of side business, but none of their talks led to anything fruitful—at least until they moved from Florida to Ohio, where they had their big idea. It was brought about by the weather. Cynthia, in particular, struggled with the shorter days and long winters of the north. It became such a battle, that she suffered from a mild seasonal depression.

To counteract her down moods, she began researching how people lived in countries with similar climates. Denmark, in particular, had the same grueling winter conditions—and yet often topped the list of world’s happiest countries. She soon came across the concept of “hygge”, a Danish word meaning to make yourself and your home comfortable.

It resonated, so she began trying to make their home cozier and warmly lit. A big part of that was making frequent use of candles. It worked, and in a short time, their environment was a happier place and winter became much more bearable. But it came at a cost… they were using a lot of candles.

With all those candles came a lot of wasted candle containers. Before long, empty glass jars, ceramic containers and porcelain pots were stacked all over the house. Both Cynthia and Chris, being environmentally conscious, didn’t want to throw them all in the landfill. So, Cynthia began planting flowers into the nicer looking ones and using them as pot plants.

It was recycling in its best form… not just chucking them in the blue bin, but repurposing and reusing. The process opened her eyes to a big problem. There must be millions of candle containers thrown away. What could be done to minimize that waste?

When an unexpected gift arrived in the mail, she and Chris found their answer. Cynthia’s friend sent her a seed embedded card. The type that you can simply plant in soil, add water, and the seeds will sprout into a beautiful plant. Cynthia was taken with the idea, but it was Chris who originally saw it as a solution to the problem of candle container waste.

They devised a plan to create their own candle brand, using ceramic pots for the containers. And here’s a key point that set them apart: they’d create a seed embedded label. So, when the candle was finished, customers could simply fill the container with soil, plant the label and have a beautiful plant to enjoy.

The idea had sparked, and they called the concept The Growing Candle. Chris and Cynthia started by making the candles in their own basement. You might say it made sense. They also decided to produce 100% soy candles, because they burn cleaner and fragrance can be added more easily.

Over the next year, things continued to grow. Due to the unique nature of the product, they were able to stand out from the crowd in the saturated candle market. There are literally thousands of people making candles, but no one else making them in a reusable pot that comes complete with its own plant.

The idea alone opened a lot of doors for them, brought in customers, and presented them with larger orders from suppliers. Throughout 2018, their seed cards weren’t the only thing growing. The business did too, exceeding five figures per month in profit.

The biggest problem at this stage was that Cynthia and Chris were burning the candle at both ends. It became hard not to talk about the business at all times, when at home and work. They often need to remind themselves to talk about and focus on other things, like the freedom and time they both have in their lives, including more time spent on raising their daughter.

They are working hard … and, in the words of Neil Young, it’s better to burn out than to fade away.

I’ll give you a clear and direct answer, but remember that a more important question might be “What are your goals?” or “Why do you want to have a new source of income? Your answer might determine a next step that’s different than the answer to “What’s the easiest idea to start right now?”

The Travel Blog That Pays for a House

What It’s About

A family builds a home for themselves on the road.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Building sites was a great learning tool for Sharon as she was able to take a more business-minded approach with them. Most importantly, she began to understand how to use SEO (Search Engine Optimization) combined with affiliate marketing. When she applied what she had learned through the niche sites to her travel blog, things really started to pick up.

It was then that Sharon learned a valuable lesson: it’s far better to concentrate on ONE of them and get that working great than to be everywhere. Sharon’s one thing is SEO. In her view, it’s essentially market research. You have to understand what people want and need and then use SEO to give it to them.

Fun Fact

Sharon just completed a survey amongst bloggers. She found that 32% of bloggers who have been blogging for less than 6 months are making at least $200 a month, but 66% have made nothing. According to Sharon, that 66% were probably focusing on the WRONG things.

One respondent making $20,000 a month has been blogging for less than a year. The average amount of time, however, that bloggers making $20,000 a month have been blogging is 3.45 years.

Episode 903

How much money can someone really make blogging? Would you believe a monthly profit of up to $50,000 was possible? For today’s side hustler, Sharon Gourlay of Australia, that figure is real. Granted, $50,000 was Sharon’s best month, and it came from growing a multitude of blogs over several years. But as we dive into Sharon’s story, you’ll get a sense of what’s possible with a blogging business if you focus on the right things.

In 2013, Sharon was a part-time graduate teacher and full-time mother to a one and three-year-old. She was stressed, way too busy, and watching every cent her family spent. She wanted something better for her life.

Tired of being so tried, Sharon decided an online business was the answer to many of these problems. She had been reading family travel blogs at the time and noticed that some of them seemed to be working well. If they could do it, she thought, so could she.

So she embarked on a quest to monetize her blog, WheresSharon.com. She had started the blog 8 years earlier while traveling on a break from work, but by her own admission, it was poorly written. It had been more of an online journal, and page views had dwindled to zero.

So she got busy researching what to do with it. Startup costs were minimal—about $60 to cover her website hosting and domain name. She worked on the site with every spare moment in her hectic schedule. At this time, Sharon also started Digital Nomad Wannabe to track her journey from “having no idea” to building a successful online business.

By mid-year, Sharon convinced her husband that the family should become digital nomads, and they left Australia on December 31, 2014. The two blogs and her husband’s online product were bringing in roughly $1,000 per month.

About 18 months after getting serious with her websites, Sharon gave birth to her third child. By then, their online income was enough to support a higher cost of living, and they were able to move back home. She took advantage of Australia’s paid maternity leave, but even while taking that four months off from blogging work, her income kept growing.

At that time, Sharon was making $8,000-$15,000/month from affiliate links on her travel site alone. Meanwhile, expenses for the website were less than $100 per month. As mentioned earlier, Sharon’s best month was $50,000 in profit. This was when she had started selling a course on DigitalNomadWannabe.com.

Then, toward the end of 2017, Sharon actually sold her travel blog as well as a couple of the smaller sites she had started in 2014. Thanks to SEO and affiliate marketing, the sites were generating passive income, which is exactly what buyers want. Even though her travel blog may seem like a personal project, she was able to sell it for more than three times her annual profits.

With the proceeds from the website sales, Sharon’s family bought a house in Melbourne in 2018.

She says: “It gives me immense pride that I have been able to build this business out of nothing. I love that we now get to live a life structured how and where we want and not held back by money or traditional jobs. Both my husband and I are at home full-time with the kids. We travel when we want, and the kids go to the school we want.”

Sharon continues to launch new sites. Her latest is called Dive Into Malaysia. Although still relatively small for now, she can see it becoming her biggest project yet.

"The biggest mistake I made was listening to the wrong advice. I look back now and wonder why I didn’t realize that listening to people who didn’t have the success I wanted was silly, but I didn’t. It lead to me doing the wrong thing—like chasing page views—rather than my actual goals."

New Jersey Blog Becomes Local Legend

What It’s About

A local travel blog takes off, becoming a leading resource for all things Hoboken.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Jennifer said anyone who wants to work their way into a local community should live there (or spend a good amount of time there) and be consistent with what they’re doing to cover it.

Speaking of consistency, navigating the waters of a 20+ person team gets tricky—that’s why Jennifer plans a monthly content calendar (2-3 articles daily, 7 days a week) of all topics to be covered.

Fun Fact

Hoboken is part of New Jersey’s Gold Coast—a span of waterfront that sits along the Hudson River, providing its residents with stunning views of the Manhattan skyline. It’s also only a single square mile with 50,000 residents—yet has the most bars and restaurants per capita than any other U.S. city!

Notes from Chris

Episode 902

Jennifer Tripucka is the founder and Editor-In-Chief of the lifestyle website, Hoboken Girl. It covers all things New Jersey, with a hyper-focus on Hoboken and Jersey City. The blog tackles everything from the best brunch spots to vintage Hoboken boutiques to parenting tips for new moms … and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

As she puts it, her team lives, breathes, eats, and drinks Hoboken and Jersey City lifestyle topics.

What started as a personal blog has grown into a six-figure business with over 20 contributors, and an audience of over two million readers.

How did she do it? It started with a steamy love affair … with the city of Hoboken.

Jennifer moved there over 8 years ago (her grandparents had businesses in Hudson County NJ) and became enamored with the place. While sitting home one New Years Eve with then-boyfriend (now husband) in 2012, Jennifer confided she wanted to explore more of her local community—and wound up buying the domain HobokenGirl.com that night.

It started as a passion project to chronicle her adventures around Hoboken, from a female perspective. She wrote about the things women would be interested in and discovered there weren’t many sites around with a female voice.

Her idea was to bring a fresh spin to her local blogosphere while sharing things that residents would enjoy. Fun stuff like local events, things to do, culture and community … and all with a humorous tilt.

Since then, Hoboken Girl has been steadily growing in the low six-figure range. The blog makes money through sponsored posts, brand and media partnerships, dedicated emails, and product advertisements.

She’s hired several part-time team members as well as 20 freelance writers who contribute to the site. What started with a couple of blog posts a week has turned into this garden state media juggernaut.

In January 2017, Jennifer left her day job (with Brides Magazine) to pursue Hoboken Girl full-time.

What’s next? Jennifer has picked up another side hustle as a consultant in social media strategy and management. She’s also working on creating a podcast called Tea on the Hudson.

These Throat Lozenges Are On Fire!

What It’s About

Two brothers set traditional throat lozenges ablaze.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

You can go into your local supermarket right now and buy a bag of 120 store brand cough drops for $1.99. By contrast, a bag of 20 Fire Drops costs anywhere from $3.99 – 4.99. They knew they had to target health-conscious, organic consumers who were willing to pay a few bucks extra for an effective product and natural alternative. And since the best way to target those people was by going to events where they knew they’d be in attendance, they hit the farmer’s markets, organic food stores, and small locally owned businesses.

If marketing your product is proving challenging, figure out who your ideal customer is and go where they are!

Fun Fact

You normally think in terms of tablespoons and cups when you measure ingredients in the kitchen, but you’ve got to think bigger in business. Brett realized that instead of measuring his ingredients with kitchen utensils, he had to start weighing them if he wanted any manufacturer to produce Fire Drops.

Notes from Chris

Episode 901

Massachusettes native, Brett Johnson, is a huge fan of natural remedies. During the winter months, he would find himself consuming endless amounts of cough drops that were packed with medicine and various additives, all of which he thought was not the healthiest to consume.

Unfortunately, there were few alternatives out there, and throat lozenges were simply a necessity when the New England cold arrived.

This all changed one day at work. Working at a design studio, Brett expected just another normal day when a woman entered the studio with a request for help with packaging a natural throat lozenge.

But as work continued with the product, she felt that it was too time-consuming and decided to focus on other opportunities. She was moving on … but Brett thought the idea had vast potential. He was able to convince her to sell the product and business to him.

This marked the beginning of Fire Drops. The original inventor had devised a formula for the lozenges and had prepared an initial batch, but there was still a lot to be desired. Brett enlisted the help of his brother Scott, and the two of them immediately began experimenting with flavors.

Their first step was to look up every other lozenge on the market to see the ingredients that were being used. This gave them a sense of what options were out there, as well as a direction in which they could take in order to differentiate their product.

Their next step was time-consuming: Brett spent months in the kitchen trying different combinations and taking detailed notes on every aspect of the process. With factors such as ingredient proportions and cooking temperature to account for, it took several iterations for a viable product to emerge from the kitchen.

The first ten batches tasted like popcorn, and it would take countless more tries before it started tasting like candy. After sufficient tinkering, the brothers managed to come up with a product that not only tasted great but was effective against cold and flu symptoms.

With everything said and done, Brett and Scott figure that they’ve invested around $15,000 in startup capital. The money mainly went towards packaging and building up inventory. Today, Fire Drops nets around $20,000 in revenue each year, with sales slowing down in the summer months. The best part of this experience has been the opportunity for the brothers to work together and earn a real-world MBA. All of the marketing, product development, manufacturing and e-commerce skills they had to learn on the fly will be helpful in whatever project they take on next.

They’re also not resting on their throat lozenge laurels. The two brothers have approached independently owned organic stores and are now stocked in over one-hundred of them. They also realize that even though they’ve done well bootstrapping the business, they’re open to investment to help get to the next level. But for now, Brett and Scott are willing to do the things that don’t scale—an attitude that makes any bumps in the business easier to swallow.

Philadelphia Foodie Toasts Competition with Sweet Treat

What It’s About

Foodie takes a bite out of the Philly food scene with her bite-sized French toast.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Some advice Charisse offers to entrepreneurs wanting to get into the food vending arena: Never run out of product—it’s better to give left-overs away to employees at the end of the night than to disappoint your customers. Make your product affordable. Open in a timely manner—never keep your customers waiting. Word will spread if you fail to take your business seriously.

Fun Fact

It’s a myth that French toast originated in France. The dish now known as French toast existed in the age of the Roman Empire, according to a collection of recipes from the early 5th century AD.

Notes from Chris

Episode 900
Having worked in the hospitality industry for 16 years, Charisse McGill knows a thing or two about customer service. But it wasn’t until she witnessed her 13-year-old daughter make over $6,000 in four Saturdays selling lemonade that she knew she needed to start her own business.

As the manager of the Lansdale Farmers Market, Charisse knew there was money to be made in being a food vendor. This is where her daughter sold her specialty lemonade infused with local fruits and herbs. Working there for the past seven years, Charisse had watched how selling food products could be a major source of income for many vendors. And she knew that someday she, too, would have a product of her own.

Up until the end of 2018, Charisse not only managed the Farmers Market, she also worked as the full-time director of Special Events for Valley Forge Military Academy and College. She also taught classes on becoming a food vendor as an adjunct instructor at a local Community College.

After seeing her daughter’s success selling lemonade, Charisse decided the time had come to sell her own concoction. She just needed to figure out what it would be! She knew that to be successful in an open-air food market, she had to have something unique, and something that smells good.

It was thinking through different ideas that Charisse settled on French toast bites—a made-to-order treat that is simple, focused, and easy to replicate. Charisse’s French toast bites are made like traditional French toast, but in bite-size cubes and fried. Customers can pick from various toppings such as maple syrup, fresh strawberries, chocolate, whipped cream, or powdered sugar. The mouth-watering goodies are made on-site, so customers can watch the food being prepared. Charisse sells the bites in a sharable package, much like a serving of fries, for $7.

She called her sweet endeavor Lokal Artisan Foods, and those French toast bites are her signature product. She also makes French toast seasoning, which is for sale both virtually and on local grocery store shelves.

Within a few short months, Charisse was making 60% of her yearly salary (from her full-time job). It was after this that she realized she wanted to leave that job and go all-in with her own business. However, Charisse still believes the best time to start a company is when you are guaranteed a paycheck. She advises using that time to cut your personal bills and prepare for being a full-time business owner.

You’re welcome to chew it over, but we think it’s some pretty sweet advice!

Natural Hair Enthusiasts Create Curl-Care Empire

What It’s About

A hairbrained scheme helps a couple mix things up.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Kim and Tim discovered that DIY subscription boxes were great when their subscribers didn’t know what they wanted, but when they did, they would rather just buy the product from someone else instead of having to make it themselves over and over again.

But, in a way, the subscription business unintentionally provided them with the research they needed to develop a real line of products. They knew what worked recipe-wise, what sold the best, and they had a solid idea of what their customers really wanted when it came time to pivot.

Fun Fact

When Tim went on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, he and Kim actually drove all the way to New York from Chicago! Both of his parents, Kim’s mom, and a few other relatives wanted to go with him, so they all piled in a car together to experience this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Notes from Chris

Episode 899
The year was 2013. Beyonce performed at the Superbowl, people were doing the Harlem Shake, and high school sweethearts Kim and Tim Lewis of Chicago, Illinois were looking for a change.

Kim was working her way up the ladder in “Corporate America” while Tim found himself in between jobs. The job hunt struggle was real, but there was one benefit to this period of uncertainty. It got them thinking about how amazing it would be for them to work for themselves—doing something that would finally allow them to live life on their own terms.

But first, they needed an idea…

Around this time, Kim had thrown herself into the people of color beauty space. With a growing love of her all-natural mane, she eagerly sought out resources to keep her look “on fleek,” but unlike the gorgeous hair on her head, her research fell flat. There just wasn’t anything out there to educate and empower other women of color to embrace their god(dess)-given curls.

From then on, her mission was clear—she’d comb through the tangled up rhetoric to supply her people with the information they needed to ditch their flat irons and hair damaging chemicals. And she’d build up a social media style community in order to do it.

But with Tim in between jobs, money was tighter than her curls. Where were they going to get the capital to fund something like this??

That’s when they decided on something a bit unconventional.

See, Tim is a trivia whiz and exactly the kind of person that you want on your team for those weekly quiz nights at the bar. And what does any trivia-loving person do when they’re looking to fund a new business venture with limited funds? Why, they go on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, naturally!

Although it felt like a stretch when he signed up, he was chosen to compete, and their families took a road trip up to NYC to share in the hairbrained scheme. When everything was said and done, Tim walked away with a fun anecdote—and $100,000 in prize winnings.

Unfortunately, unlike Kim’s fabulous curls, their social media platform fell flat.

Still attempting to find more natural products for her hair, Kim found herself brushing up on DIY hair solutions. She spent hours watching recipe videos and picked a few she wanted to try out. After a mad dash to the grocery store for ingredients, Kim tore apart her kitchen in the pursuit of fierce and natural hair.

But four hours and a couple hundred dollars later, she was disappointed with the final result… It wasn’t a total loss though—amid the mess of her kitchen, she found her next side hustle.

In this day and age, Kim says that the only way to truly know exactly what is in your products is to make it yourself. And that was the whole idea behind building her subscription-based model. Her customers would use her raw ingredients and recipe tutorials to make the products themselves, and they’d know exactly what they were putting on their hair and body. And it also wouldn’t break the bank!

Since then, the couple has continued to grow their hustle with hundreds of subscriptions and thousands of orders shipped. Now, almost four years later, they have moved on from sending customers ingredients, to actually selling their own product line.

Last year, CurlMix made a total of $1 million. Already, CurlMix surpassed that amount in 2019, making $3 million, and Kim says that it’s her goal to close out the year at $10 million.

Kim and Tim have truly built a curly hair care empire! It grew from a hustle to their full-time career, and now they get to live the independent life they always dreamed of.

Not only that, but CurlMix has allowed them to give back to their community, by opening up a manufacturing facility in Chicago and employing women to ensure that they have a job where they receive fair wages.

They can’t wait to see what the future of CurlMix brings.

MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:

  • CurlMix: Mix things up—add some of Kim and Tim’s products to your hair routine!
  • Shopify: Kim and Tim used Shopify to set up their site for CurlMix, and they’re offering a 21-day trial and exclusive discount for all Side Hustle School listeners!
