TV Writer Casts Himself in Lead Hustle Role

What It’s About

A writer who spins the stories of others using a new medium.

Words of Wisdom

A suggestion: don’t try to accommodate every request. Decide how your service works and offer it that way! Especially when it’s a different kind of thing, the burden is on you to explain why it’s important to do it your way. This creates more confidence and trust for buyers.

Fun Fact

When Dennis went to build the website for the game, he discovered that YouDontKnowMyLife.com was owned by someone else and they were asking $795 for it. That seemed too steep so he secured YouDontKnowMyLifeGame.com. A few weeks before the games were going to arrive from the manufacturer, he saw that the original website was going to be auctioned off. Dennis took a chance and bid $10. He ended up being the only bidder and the website is now his for $785 less than what was originally asked.

Notes from Chris

Episode 832

Los Angeles writer Dennis Hensley has spent his life asking unique, probing questions. A master interviewer, he began his writing career in the magazine world crafting celebrity profiles, and later transitioned to writing for television.

All was well until the labor strike in 2013.

His opportunities began to dry up and he soon found himself without steady gigs. The crisis had a negative effect on his financial, mental, and physical health. And it continued like this for several years.

In 2017, he began attending programs at the Actors Fund, a national human services organization that meets the needs of the entertainment community through emergency financial assistance, affordable housing, health care and more. He enrolled in a life-changing course called Managing Cash Flow for Artists. In this course, the instructor recommended that students listen to the Side Hustle School podcast.

Dennis was clear that he needed a side hustle, and could see how it could make a difference when crises occur (like the labor strike). He began to explore what he likes to do and what he’s good at and landed on interviewing. He had been interviewing his whole life and was really great with crafting questions. And most of his past subjects found his style to be fun and meaningful. He already had a podcast and wanted to think of a unique way to expand.

That’s when the idea for Lifecast was born. Lifecast is a digital audio interview that focuses on memorable stories. Dennis spends up to three hours conducting in-person interviews to gather details about the subject’s life.

He utilizes questions from his Observation Deck, a deck of cards featuring questions created specifically for interviews: “What makes you blush?” and “What was your worst job?” for example. He then compiles the interview into an edited audio collage with music for family and loved ones to cherish.

Startup costs came in around $2,000 to cover the cost of equipment, rights for music, and a Squarespace website. He was able to recoup his investment after a couple months of interviews. Packages range from $700 to $1,000 depending on the scale of the interview. He currently conducts an average of two interviews per month.

Dennis has recently cast himself as the lead in another side hustle. After launching Lifecast, he was inspired to have his Observation Deck printed professionally so that he could gift the deck to interviewees and sell to interested parties. He reached out to a graphic designer friend and asked for advice on where to print his cards. His friend sent him a link to MakePlayingCards.com and challenged him to “Think big and create a board game out of the questions as well!”

Dennis encourages everyone out there to look within their own skills and interests, and get creative. Think of what excites you and see what you can build from that. After creating one side hustle, it was easier to create another. These side hustles have given Dennis something that is his to own that the entertainment industry can’t take away from him.

Frustrated Mom Grows Hair Brush Hustle to Seven Figures

What It’s About

A solution to the trials and tribulations of curly hair—an episode you don’t want to brush off!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Rikki had some great advice for those looking to create a product without experience:

“Surround yourself with people who are ‘smarter’ than you are. There are so many people who are willing to help and give advice—don’t be too proud to take it.”

Fun Fact

The average head of hair has roughly 120,000 hairs while a curly head only has 100,000. Since a curly head of hair doesn’t have as many hair follicles, there are fewer sebaceous glands. This means that their scalps aren’t as oily as someone with straight hair, so they don’t need to shampoo as often.

Notes from Chris

Episode 831

Rikki Mor of Colorado Springs was the youngest of three very curly haired girls. Much of her adolescence was spent actively avoiding her mother and the dreaded hairbrush that never seemed to be far from her reach.

If you’re part of the 65% of the human population blessed (or cursed) with curly hair, it’s no surprise as to why.

While straight and even wavy hair can handle a good brushing no matter its current state, curly hair is a bit “extra.” Due to its texture, curly hair is prone to developing knots, and attempting to brush through those knots can be a traumatic experience for everyone involved.

And it was that constant frustration that led Rikki’s mother to do something pretty drastic: she took the three of them to a salon and had them cut it all off. Just like Newton and the apple, it was that haircut that changed the trajectory of Rikki’s life. Because, according to her account of things, having short hair, being named “Rikki,” and wearing glasses meant that everyone thought she was a boy. With a new frustration to add to her list, she swore that she would never cut her own children’s hair unless they explicitly asked her to.

Twenty years later, Rikki was married with twin daughters sporting hair just as long, unruly, and unmanageable as her own, and she had an opportunity to put that childhood promise to the test. While Rikki and her husband rarely argued, the gloves were off when it came down to the morning ritual of brushing out the twins’ hair. At this point in time, Rikki owned every brush available on the market that promised it would get through all types of hair, but none of them were any match for her daughters’ magnificent manes.

One especially trying morning, Rikki vented to her husband about their predicament through tears of frustration. How was it possible that humanity had put a man on the moon but still had not found an easy solution for brushing curly hair? She knew that she couldn’t be the only mom dealing with this issue, but nobody was coming up with a solution. Something had to give—because these knots were certainly not budging.

This time, instead of commiserating with her, her husband took a more productive approach—he asked her what she thought did and what didn’t work with all the brushes she had tried.

This got her to thinking—what would she do if she were designing a brush of her own?

After sitting on the idea for a little while, Rikki approached a local product engineer to show him the way she brushed her daughters’ hair—for example, how she held the brush by its head, rather than its handle, for more control. She also wanted bristles that worked more like little fingers.

After several iterations, they settled on the perfect 5 x 3 inch brush. Each bristle would penetrate the hair at a different depth, with the longest one capable of digging into the knot while the other lengths would open it up. Since it worked like magic on the knots in her girls’ hair, she called it Knot Genie and set up a website to sell it on.

For the first couple years of business, Rikki juggled building Knot Genie with her job working for Nationwide Insurance. By the end of their second year of business (in 2012), Knot Genie’s sales had grown to seven figures allowing her to start dedicating her time to it full-time.

After experiencing several years of seven-figure profits as a result of their lock on the market, similar products began popping up from companies with deeper pockets and private equity money. Unlike Rikki, they could hire celebrities and some of the most popular influencers to get their brand in front of audiences. Their income from Knot Genie has been cut in half from what they were making in earlier days, but they’re still taking home profits in the mid six-figure range.

And they certainly aren’t throwing in the hair towel. They’ve been working on other products that fit with their brand and mission including a line of Knot Genies specifically tailored to groom the family pet.

No matter how you curl it, it’s a spectacular, hair-raising success.

Bilingual Insurance Agent Translates Problem-Solving into Profits

What It’s About

Bilingual Insurance Agent translates her skills into profit.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Jennifer suggests others who are interested in doing translation as a side hustle consider what they are knowledgeable or passionate about. Are you a multilingual college student who didn’t mind the college application process? You can assist others through that task. Do you enjoy typing and can do it quickly? Consider transcription.

Fun Fact

Translation is a 46 billion dollar industry! It is one of the the fastest growing industries with an anticipated 42% growth by 2020.

Notes from Chris

Episode 830
Jennifer Thomé is a longtime, serial side hustler. Just to name a few, she has moonlighted as an event planner, sold baked goods, and managed social media for nonprofits. These days, she’s earning extra money as a Chinese translator, specializing in solving real-life problems.

Jen moved to China when she was 20 and became proficient in the language. While living there and going to school, people would ask her for help with lots of simple tasks that required English. These days, back in the States and living in Los Angeles, she still does some traditional translation work, including interpretation and voiceover recording.

But her unique ability to help people solve those real-life problems is her specialty. Her first paid job as a translator was solving a legal problem. A couple’s children were wrongfully taken from them and didn’t know what to do. Within a short period of time, through research, making phone calls, and navigating the court system, Jennifer was able to get the kids back into the parents’ custody. She never asked for compensation, but the couple was so grateful, they paid her $8,000!

Dumbfounded she could make money doing something that in the past she’d just done as a favor for friends, Jennifer soon began doing translation as a paid side hustle. She discovered that the work was a fun and profitable way to maintain her language skills.

Jennifer had zero startup costs when starting her translation business, Turnkey Translator. Her first year’s profit was $27,000, and the second year was nearly $40,000. Once she began making money in this niche, she got to thinking about how she needed to teach others how to translate their skills into cash. She invested about $300 into creating an online course teaching multilinguals how to develop their own translation side hustle.

Close to 80% of Jennifer’s translation business is from referrals. She recommends if you want to start getting paid to translate, ask yourself: where would someone who needs my services be? And then go there. Mention it on social media, and join groups where you might be able to help people.

For Jennifer, the best part of having this side hustle has been her ability to help others in distress. She’s able to solve a huge legal or health problem for others, and in return, she receives a whole lot of gratitude from her customers.

Of course, she’s not doing it for charity—that money is real. It’s allowed her to transition to part-time work and spend more time with her kids. Using her language skills to solve problems has translated into real benefits.

The 10-Year Quest for Must-Have Mustard

What It’s About

A trip to Ireland leads to an unexpected (and spicy) side hustle!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Looking to break into the food industry? Take some advice from Sarah and Jesse:

“Try to find a niche. Perfect your recipe and then begin looking into what it would take to put your product on the market. Also, always hire a graphic designer. People try to save money in that area and I think it’s a fatal mistake. There are a lot of steps to sell food products, but it’s doable.”

Fun Fact

When Sarah and Jesse aren’t making mustard, they are rocking out! Both of them are in rock bands on the side.

Notes from Chris

Episode 829
Sarah and Jesse Darling’s love for mustard first began when they took a trip to Ireland. They noticed that all of the pubs had delicious, house-made mustard. It was the perfect condiment—nothing like the watery, bright yellow stuff they were used to back in the U.S. It made no sense to them.

If every pub had their own unique recipe, it couldn’t be that hard to make, right? And if so … why wasn’t it more popular in the United States?

Four years later, they moved to Portland, Oregon and made friends with people who were interested in meat smoking, homebrewing, and pickling. Around the same time, Jesse was sent on multiple work trips to Germany. He started bringing home different kinds of mustard for sampling, and their passion was reignited.

Jesse was ready to try to make his own but quickly realized why there was so little quality mustard in the United States. Not only was it hard to get just right, but people were protective over their recipes. He put on his game face, and for ten years, tested out different variables. He mixed the famous mustard seed with wine, beer, and even champagne. He tried cooking it for a long time, a short time, and not cooking it at all. He experimented with putting honey in it.

Finally, in 2016, after a decade of mediocre mustard, he had perfected his recipe. Jesse knew that he had a fantastic product and that there were very few competitors. He had a feeling that they could sell it.

Around the same time, Sarah and Jesse were ready for some life changes. They decided to move from the city to the countryside and bought a property with a big barn. Sarah was working full time as a business analyst, and Jesse had been a stay-at-home dad with their son for four years—which gave him some time to work on crafting that perfect recipe. He was now ready to go back into the workforce, so the two made the decision to switch roles.

Once Sarah left her job, her business skills really got the mustard seed rolling. This was especially valuable because unlike lots of other products, mustard wasn’t just something that they could throw onto a website and sell. They had to complete several steps to make sure their food product was legally compliant—which, by the way, they had decided to call Sasquatch Mustard, after the Pacific Northwest legend.

But now they’re well underway. Since their launch, they’ve made about $35,000. Soon, they will have completely paid off all of their startup costs and mustard up a profit.

They’re also releasing more flavors and getting ready to launch their first marinade, just in time for barbeque season.

Chronic Illness Inspires Mobile-Friendly Yoga Biz

What It’s About

Yoga instructor takes her show on the road.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Kayla thinks that if you want to get into yoga that you need to be clear on why you want to be a yoga instructor and who you want to work with. Then decide how you want to reach “your people”—whether that be through blogging, Instagram, online/offline, etc.

Fun Fact

Yoga is a big business! There are over 52,746 teachers registered with Yoga Alliance in 2016 alone, and for every yoga teacher, there are two more enrolled in a yoga teacher training program.

Notes from Chris

Episode 828

At age twelve, Kayla Kurin was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. She got passed around from doctor to doctor, but no one knew how to help. As she grew up, she had dreams of traveling the world and starting her own business. But her illness was getting in the way.

At her lowest point, Kayla didn’t think she’d be able to graduate university or hold a normal job, and travel seemed impossible. But in the past seven years, she’s done all of those things, and more. She’s traveled to over forty countries, completed three triathlons, and started two businesses.

The two most important things that helped her get to that point were yoga and meditation.

Kayla found yoga sequences to be challenging without setting her back like other forms of exercise did. When she tried searching out Yoga and Mindfulness courses specifically geared to those living with illness, there wasn’t much out there. That’s when she decided to become a yoga teacher.

After completing her training, Kayla taught in-person yoga courses… at least at first. Knowing that yoga could be a key tool in managing a chronic illness, she wanted to share resources for people to practice yoga in a therapeutic way. She began catering her classes for people with chronic illness. The challenge was that her students, who struggled with fatigue and other health setbacks, often missed class due to these very health issues—so she also began sharing some initial resources online.

After her first year as an instructor, Kayla transitioned her full-time job to become location independent. Now working as a copywriter and social media manager (which started out as a side hustle, by the way!), she was able to take her work on the road.

He passion for teaching yoga came along with her. She moved her courses and workshops online, allowing her to reach more people, no matter where in the world they might be.

Her website, Aroga Yoga, became the hub for her resources.

While exploring the world as a digital nomad, Kayla continues to teach private classes on a weekly basis as well as leading workshops a few times a year. Another bonus of taking her yoga business on the road is that Kayla can film her course videos against new backdrops around the world.

Positive feedback from her students is its own reward, but the business also helps keep Kayla accountable to her own fitness and health goals. And she’s happy to have an extra cushion of roughly $10,000 annually on top of her primary income.

Kayla intends to keep producing more books, blog posts, and mini-courses. It’s no stretch to say that she’ll continue to keep her side hustle flexible.

LA Graphic Designer Influences Influencers

What It’s About

A designer soups up branding for YouTube influencers.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

For anyone wanting to launch a similar business or freelance method, Dawn recommends setting a limit on the number of revisions you will allow from a client, and if they request more outside of that, charge extra. Make sure you protect yourself so it’s not endless work for one job. Also, understand that everything is a work in progress. Over time, you’ll know what’s working or not and can adjust your terms accordingly.

Fun Fact

When she started this as a side hustle, many of Dawn’s friends thought she was doing it for her own clout (trying to attract the right people, at the right time, change what they think or do). When in reality, Dawn was living into the dream she had from a young age watching Lizzy Mcguire and That’s So Raven and dreaming what it would be like to create for influencers like them.

Notes from Chris

Episode 826

Graphic designer Dawn Lee had an eye for style from a young age. When she was a kid she loved watching Disney shows like Lizzy Mcguire and That’s So Raven. After watching episodes, she would sketch animations and GIFs to post on MySpace for friends to share.

MySpace, in case you’ve never heard of it, was the largest social network in the early 2000’s before Facebook came along. Dawn had no idea that she was creating a future reality for herself from a young age.

She then took the traditional path that many follow—graduating high school, going to college, and earning a 4-year degree. But then, rather than taking the first available job she found, Dawn chose to travel for a while and figure out what she really wanted to do.

She had a design degree and thought she could at least do something with her skills until she figured out what was next.

During this phase she earned a living through freelance design work, making graphics and business cards to support her lifestyle until she found a “real” job. But despite applying for various positions, the “real” job would never come.

After listening to an episode of Side Hustle School, Dawn learned about the world of Merch by Amazon and began designing t-shirts to sell. Between her full-time freelance gigs and the t-shirt business, her schedule was full. But none of these projects felt sustainable.

Like many Millenials, Dawn found herself spending a lot of time on YouTube watching how-to and tutorial videos from top influencers. One day she was on her favorite YouTube influencer’s channel and noticed a disconnect between the content being presented and graphics being used. And she started noticing this as a trend with many top influencers on YouTube. They had millions of followers, but their graphics still had a homemade feel to it.

That’s when she saw a new opportunity arise. What if she could create better more brand-fitting graphics and offer them to top influencers? On a whim, Dawn whipped up a sample design for that top influencer, JENN IM (a Korean-American fashion vlogger with more than 2 million subscribers) and emailed it to her. She told her she wanted to make her brand stand out more by creating visually stunning graphics. To her surprise, she received a response within 15 minutes! And just like that, Dawn had her first client.

When she first started DLD Studio, she was bringing in an extra $1,500 per month. And when she went full time with it, it shot up to $5,000 / month. Her client base began to grow with more and more top influencers on YouTube. She’s now earning $10,000/month in profits and has recently hired a full-time business development partner and part-time creative staffer.

Dawn encourages you to be bold and reach out to who you want to work with. Don’t wait for them to find you, because they won’t. Take some time to create a design or pitch that fits your ideal client’s style or brand, and reach out to them with your mock and offering. Give them something to look at rather than just sending your website and portfolio. Show them you have value to offer in some way they may not have known.

That’s what she did, and those days watching Disney shows and posting to MySpace have paid off.

Digging For Profits: One Man’s Trash Is Another Man’s Hustle

What It’s About

A side hustle that goes from the dumpster to the bank!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Don and Cathe learned a really important lesson. In the beginning, they were processing lights on a first come basis, but these days, Don and Cathe keep an eye out for more profitable headlights like those from BMWs and Lexuses (that they can flip for up to almost $800!).

When new inventory comes in, they now process headlights on a value basis, starting with those that will yield greater profits down to those that will not. They can make more money off of one those headlights than five of the cheaper ones.

Fun Fact

Back in the 1970s and 80s, most (if not all) cars sported the same kind of halogen bulbs housed in either round or square-shaped headlight housing units. But by the 1990s and 2000s, each manufacturer started making their own headlights in-house. They started introducing Xenon HID and LED bulbs, and as the headlight and taillight options increased, the prices did as well. Now that they’re all exclusive per the manufacturer, they can control the prices, and as a result, the market itself.

Notes from Chris

Episode 825

Don Schaffer of Tigard, Oregon is not new to the reselling world. Growing up, he was the go-to “parts guy” on the playground, where he specialized in skateboards and bicycles. In his teenage and young adult years, he frequented thrift stores, where he’d purchase armfuls of albums and cassettes that he would play until he got tired of them—and then turn around and resell or trade them.

In simple terms, Don belonged to a generation that still saw the value of something after the “newness” had worn off.

This point of view served him well over the years, but as the world evolved, he noticed that people were putting less value on things with minor flaws. At the autobody shop he worked at, for example, he routinely saw parts being chucked into the bins due to a little bit of “wear and tear”—and the most common of these rejects were headlights and taillights.

When your headlight gets a crack in it or it retains fluid, insurance companies say that you’re entitled to a new one. In most instances, your insurance pays for the brand new headlight in full, the body shop orders it, and then they put the new headlight in.

And to Don’s utter dismay, they would throw away the old one regardless of whether the damage was minor or not.

Body shops will fix a dent or scratch on a car, but when it comes to something as minor as a headlight, it’s just easier for them to replace it entirely. Headlights and taillights are small money to body shops that try to work as quickly and efficiently as possible, so it doesn’t really make sense for them to invest valuable labor that could be spent elsewhere refurbishing of them.

That’s when Don had a lightbulb moment of his own—if they were throwing them away anyway, why not see if they’d give them to him to resell?

For the first three months of his new hustle, Don would pick up headlights and taillights from the shop he worked at and seven others that his boss managed, spruce them up, photograph them, write up some descriptions for them and gauge their prices based on their condition and what was available on the market, and then he’d list them on Craigslist.

But things changed when he was contacted by a fellow headlight reseller in southern California. This reseller wanted to see what he had, so Don let him come over to his house to check out his lights. After carefully reviewing what he had to offer, he set aside six or seven different headlights on the table and offered Don $500 for the bunch.

The reseller handed Don five $100 bills, packed his haul into his truck, and drove off into the sunset. Don was in shock when he walked back into the house and showed his wife, Cathe, the $500 he had just made. He told her that he thought they were really onto something here, and that was the point he started to take it seriously.

To start, Don enlisted the help of Cathe to help him navigate the wonderful, wacky world of eBay. For the rest of that year (2016), they spent nights and weekends hustling their headlights and taillights on eBay bringing in ~$25,000 in gross sales with 70% profit margins. The following year, Don decided to drop a day off of his work schedule so that he could dedicate more time to the hustle which led to their numbers doubling.

By 2018, Headlight Recycle Service crossed the six-figure mark bringing in $155,000 in sales.

Don’s early days flipping skateboard parts on the playground ended up serving him well later in life. Is there a skill like that you can draw upon? Is there a headlight hustle in your future?

Boston Friends Create Multicultural Masterpiece

What It’s About

Two friends bring more diversity to standard sip and paint parties.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Victoria and Taneekah have some great advice for those looking to follow in their footsteps:

“Do your research before taking the leap. Know your target market and find innovative ways to reach them. Once you have the butts in the seat, and you have the talent/skill to facilitate the event, the rest will fall into place!”

Fun Fact

Combining painting with wine tasting has become a popular pastime. But for Sanaa with Friends, their first event was completely dry due to the lack of a liquor license. However, it didn’t tarnish the experience, proving a little sip isn’t essential when having fun with friends.

Notes from Chris

Episode 824

Victoria Downes and Taneekah Johnson are two friends living in Boston. Although they both work full-time jobs, they’ve also dabbled in moneymaking ventures in the past. Victoria had a successful hustle selling Shea Butter, and Taneekah sold custom jewelry and cupcakes.

While creating and building is in their DNA, a few years ago they both found themselves back working full-time jobs as trainers in the public health field. The jobs were fulfilling, but sites like the level 1 trauma center where Victoria worked were not necessarily the best environment for artistic flourishing.

So, they looked outside their work to get their creative fix. For both of them, they found enjoyment in art.

Around this time, the paint party scene was just starting to take off. If you aren’t familiar with a paint party, let me give you the quick brush strokes… these gatherings typically take place in an art studio or similar space and are run in groups. Over the course of a couple of hours, an art instructor show everyone how to create a masterpiece of their very own. This is usually done while enjoying some good wine and a cheese platter. That’s what makes it a paint ‘party.’

It’s easy to see why the business model was popular. The parties were just a lot of fun, and people love them. Victoria and Taneekah were no exception.

But, they realized there was a multicultrual spin lacking in the Boston paint party scene. Boston is a truly diverse city with people of many races, ethnicities, and backgrounds represented. Victoria and Taneeka devised a concept that was similar to other paint parties, where the artworks the groups created would reflect the diverse array of people in their city.

With that, the easel was set and the paint party started. The two friends would start their own version of the concept in honor of the spirit they wanted to convey. They’d call it Sanaa with Friends—Sanaa being the Swahili word for art.

The business has generated $25,000 for these hustling artists in the last twelve months, and that’s while only opening the business part-time. It’s not quite enough to quit their jobs and go all-in, but that’s not the goal for now.

The best part for Victoria and Taneeka are the parties themselves. They don’t feel at all like work. At these parties, they get to paint, connect, and network with their local community.

These two artistic friends are living proof that with a simple idea, and a bit of perseverance, any side hustle can become a great work of art.

Tailor-Made Teas Brew Steamy Steeped-In Profits

What It’s About

Customized tea blends brew steamy profits!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

We talk often on the show about the importance of getting started and not overthinking things, and Jamah is a perfect example of this. Here’s what she has to say about getting started:

“Don’t hesitate to launch, just do it! As soon as you have your idea, get it going. Don’t wait until everything is perfect, you will figure out the kinks on the way.”

Fun Fact

Tea has a long and storied history! One of the earliest accounts dates back to China in 2737 BCE when Emperor Shen Nong accidentally discovered tea when a few leaves from an overhanging tree fell into his pot of boiled water (apparently a decree was in effect that all subjects must boil water before drinking it). Upon sipping his newly infused brew, the emperor did further research and discovered that tea not only tastes good but has medicinal properties too.

Notes from Chris

Episode 823
Meet Jamah Dacus. She’s the owner and proprietor of BlendBee.com, a site that’s dedicated to helping customers create custom tea blends from scratch. Tea has played an influential role in her life as long as she can remember.

As Jamah puts it, “Tea can be a healer, a comforter, a fat burner, a detoxer, a lover and a fighter. It can keep us awake and put us to sleep. There are so many uses, tea is simply amazing.”

It’s fair to say she’s steeped in an encyclopedic knowledge of all things tea.

At BlendBee, customers can join her monthly tea club, shop for the perfect blend, or create their own. Jamah also designs special blends for companies, spas, and restaurants through her wholesale program.

She started BlendBee as a need to fill a gap in the market—her need, to be exact. She’d been designing her own tea blends for years and wished there was a way she could choose ingredients she wanted and have it mixed for her.

Jamah was struck with a novel idea. So, she decided to chai something. What if she could design a site that let you create your own tea blends—a made-to-order business?

So, that’s what she did. She started BlendBee in 2014 and hasn’t looked back! She handcrafts every blend to order, using the highest quality ingredients sourced from around the globe.

Her customers love creating their own unique blends, and she receives rave reviews from them. BlendBee is now earning between $10k—$20k a month, and Jamah works on it full-time. How did she do it?

Before growing BlendBee into a bustling Bee Team, it started as most side hustles do: a solo operation, just Jamah. She did everything herself from building the website to making the tea blends. Her startup costs were just under $2,000, which covered the ingredients, packaging, and her website.

She sourced her teas from small, organic or wild-crafted fair-trade farms from around the world. She now works directly with several suppliers who she’s built relationships with over the years. Her green tea comes from China and Japan. Her black teas come from India. Red teas are sourced from South Africa while her yerba mate comes straight from the source in Argentina.

BlendBee currently averages around $35 an order, and sells between 300-700 orders per month. Her most popular product is the 1/4 lb custom tea blend. Her customers love being able to create their own teas and this has been a key factor in setting her brand apart.

So, what’s next for BlendBee? Jamah wants to continue growing it and its sister company, ModestMix.com. She’d love to land more local and wholesale accounts too. Either way, it sounds like her blends have become quite the hot commodi-tea.
