Q&A: What do you think about Shopify?

What It’s About

A listener is thinking about using Shopify to sell their products. What should they know?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1189

Shopify has seen tremendous growth in the past couple of years. It used to be that I would mention them or someone else would in conjunction with several other providers. Now it’s kind of like the Coca-Cola of e-commerce solution providers.

What exactly do they do and what do I think of them? That’s what today’s caller wants to know.

“I’ve noticed a lot of people using Shopify for their business. It looks easy to set up … but do you have an opinion on it? What should I be aware of if I go that route for an ecommerce hustle?”

Q&A: What’s the best way to register domains?

What It’s About

It’s pretty simple … how should you register a domain? (The answer is simple too.)

Notes from Chris

Episode 1187

There’s no reason not to have your own domain now. They are cheap and portable. You don’t want to have to tell people to go to “mysite.wordpress.com” or “blogspot.com/mylittleponyforever” or whatever it might be.

Today’s caller is wondering about the best way to register domains. If you’re like me, the bigger challenge is having too many … because even though they’re cheap, you do have to pay for them every year. I’ll say more about that in my answer as well.

“I found a domain I wanted, and I went to register it on GoDaddy … but then I thought, maybe I should go somewhere else. If I register it with one company, do I have to host my website there as well? What if I change my mind?

Also, should I get the .com and the .org? I see there are a bunch of other extensions as well … I don’t want to end up paying $150/year for a domain with a bunch of extensions, but I also don’t want someone else to take them. What would I do? “

Mom Photographer Starts Summer Camp for Kids

What It’s About

A photographer shifts her focus starting a creative arts summer camp for kids.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Think about starting your own summer camp? Here’s some helpful advice from Tracy and Jennifer; “To run a successful summer camp you have a solid curriculum with a lot of interactive projects. Summer camp needs to be different than school and the focus should be fun for the kids. Test out all of your projects to ensure kids will grasp what you are teaching and have fun while doing so.”

Fun Fact

More than 6 million kids in the USA attend some form of summer camp. There are more than 12,000 summer camps operating in the United States, including 7,000 overnight camps and 5,000 day camps.

Source: https://www.regpacks.com/blog/infographic-amazing-facts-summer-camps-united-states/

Notes from Chris

Episode 1186
Tracy Robinson works as an outdoor photographer in The Woodlands, just north of Houston, Texas, where she takes family, senior and business portraits. She loves her work, but it’s very seasonal. You see, it gets extremely hot in The Woodlands during summer, so most people opt to have their outdoor photos taken in the fall. Although that means Tracy doesn’t make as much money then, that’s not to say she isn’t busy. As a mom of five, there’s always something to do.

A few years ago, she was so busy that often she wasn’t even able to capture a moment with her kids. Case in point, one of her daughters had been asking for a photography lesson for months … and Tracy would always respond with “one day soon.” As time dragged on that “one day” felt like it would never come.

But Tracy didn’t lose focus and eventually sat down to work out a rough curriculum for a kids photography class. As the course developed, her vision for it increased. In fact, she was so taken with what she prepared that she thought it could be worth teaching to other kids, not just her own—and there was a complete lack of art classes in her local area.

Flash forward to March 2016 when Tracy met Jennifer Pickard. It turned out that Jennifer had been working on a similar idea over the previous year. She was an Art Director at Louisiana State University, where she taught Adobe Photoshop skills to adults.

When Tracy and Jennifer met, they instantly pictured themselves working together. They devised the idea of a summer day camp to teach kids photography and graphic design skills. They wasted no time, and—in a snap—were testing the concept on their own children.

Turns out, kids, even young ones, are pretty good at grasping ideas like “aperture” and “pixelization.” That’s one benefit the iPhone generation has over the rest of us. The two adults then decided to bring this creative endeavor out of the darkroom. They called it Camp Pixel Project.

After running that first season, they both collapsed in exhaustion with a new respect for what teachers go through. But they were also satisfied with the progress, as were the parents of their new design students.

With that success under their belt, they went back to the drawing board. They knew they’d for sure run the day camps again the following summer. They planned to implement a bunch of changes from the lessons learned in the first year.

This resulted in significant profit for Tracy and Jennifer. For just two to three weeks of camps each year, they each take home around ten thousand dollars. Not enough for a full-time income but more than enough to cover the slower periods in their other work.

For the future, they hope to franchise Camp Pixel Project to others around the country. With such a proven concept, the picture seems crystal clear.

CLASSROOM: Side Hustle Sprint! It’s Time to Break Out the Duct Tape

What It’s About

Ready? Set. Go! There’s no better time to work on that project than now.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1185

In recent Classroom episodes, we’ve looked at different side hustle ideas—where they come from, categories of different ideas, how to decide between competing ideas, and so on. We looked at the three elements of every compelling offer: a promise, a pitch, and a price, and then we examined the difference between what people say they want and what they really want.

Last week was all about business licenses, bank accounts, and record-keeping.

This week I’d like to pose a question as a thought experiment: what if you had to launch a project in two weeks or less?

This is not just theoretical, at least for me: In my world, my new book THE MONEY TREE comes out in just eight days, so perhaps that’s why this topic has been on my mind. I try to live out the values I teach here on the show, and when it comes to publishing I have an unmovable deadline. Ready or not, the day arrives, and I have a limited window to make it really count.

So when it comes to working on a crunch to launch your project, there are a few questions you need to answer:

  • What do you really have to do?
  • What part of this are you currently procrastinating around?
  • What can you let go of?

The answers to these questions will drive the process for this exercise.

Listen to today’s Classroom episode to learn more…

THIS WEEK’S ASSIGNMENT:

If you expect to produce income this year, make sure you have a dedicated bank account for that income. Keep it separate from your other income.

Part II: Track your expenses using one of those systems I mentioned, or if you’re a spreadsheet person, just do it that way—but do it some way.

Digital Marketer Makes Money Marketing Himself

What It’s About

A marketing specialist finds success in highlighting what he knows best… himself.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Jacob has some important wisdom to share; “There is only one thing that makes you a real business whether side hustle or full-time hustle. It’s not a website, not a product, not a home office. It’s a SALE. Once you make that first sale, you’re a business.”

Fun Fact

The average business owner spends 20 hours per week on marketing related activities. This is a huge amount of time and often takes away from other important things. There are plenty of side hustle opportunities by helping out or minimizing this time for business owners.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1184
Jacob Ratliff was just twenty one years old when he first became disillusioned with his day job. He worked as a digital marketing specialist: creating campaigns for clients that would bring them leads and increase sales. He was pretty good at it, producing significant revenue for his employer.

But, his thirty thousand dollars a year salary was paltry compared to the value he was providing. Despite his best efforts, he had no luck negotiating a raise. Every day was a struggle and he soon came to the conclusion that the job was a dead end.

In an attempt to boost his income—and keep his sanity—Jacob decided to try freelancing on the side. He was confident in his abilities and knew he could do a good job if he found clients of his own.

After signing that first client, Jacob indulged in a mild celebration, buying drinks for a few friends. But, he didn’t spend all the money. Instead, he put most of it into a dedicated bank account. (We’ll talk about this more in next week’s Classroom episode.)

He came up with a marketing plan that involved different channels, like social media, paid traffic, and even direct mail. From there, the plan involved converting those leads to customers and eventually converting those customers into advocates, people who would refer more business.

The plan worked well, and his first client began to see results quickly. However, only when they were satisfied did Jacob move onto the next phase of his own side hustle marketing plan. He asked that client for a referral—if they knew anyone that might be able to utilize his services. It worked, bringing Jacob his next few clients. And this method of completing excellent work and utilizing referrals quickly spiraled out bringing in more and more business. In fact, it worked so well that over the next three months Jacob was earning enough to eclipse the salary he was making at his day job.

As the leads kept on coming, Jacob built an official website for his business and registered it under AshevilleMarketer.com, something he hadn’t even bothered within the beginning. He’s now bringing in around $10,000 a month.

Q&A: Should I make a physical or digital book?

What It’s About

A listener looks for advice on how to self-publish their book.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1183

If you want to publish a book, what is the best format—physical, digital, or something else?

Today’s caller wants to earn passive income from her book that gives grandparents ideas for activities to do with their grandkids, and is torn between the different options.

Is there a single answer to this question (print vs digital), is there one answer that’s best for her, and what are the pros and cons to each approach?

“I currently have a Web site called GrandmaCreates.com where I teach grandparents ways to bond with their grandkids by doing crafts, recipes, love sharing, etc. I want to create a grandma fund book full of kids jokes, crafts to do with young kids and recipes. I also want to create a grandpa fund but feel full of just about the same things that only geared more towards grandpas. I’m extremely busy with my current job and I have a husband and a 14 year old son at home. My plan is to work on the book for about an hour or two every night.

My question is if I should make this an e-book or a physical book, I like the idea of passive income. After the work is done and with the physical book, it takes a lot more time and effort. But I also am one that likes to hold a physical book in my hand and bookmark the best pages. Although I’m a young grandma at 43 years old, I think that a lot of our older grandparents felt the same way that I do. I can’t wait to hear from you, and thanks so much.”

Q&A: Any tips for buying stuff at flea markets to resell?

What It’s About

A listener is thinking about a reselling side hustle. What should they know?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1182

Let’s buy some stuff at flea markets and resell it! It’s something everyone can do, and truly is the easiest way to get started making money apart from your job.

It doesn’t have to be a flea market, by the way … it could also be a yard sale, garage sale, thrift store, charity shop, swap meet, or whatever they call it where you live. And if these events aren’t happening now because of COVID-19, well, you can plan ahead. 🙂

Today’s caller is looking for some specific guidance. Let’s hear her question, and see if she’s come to the right place for advice.

“You’ve said that reselling is the easiest way to get started making money apart from your job, and that flea markets or yard sales can be good places to find inventory. What tips or advice do you have to make sure I don’t get stuck with something no one wants, and to make the most efficient use of my time? ”

TBT: Best Guitar Lessons in the Universe

What It’s About

The answer to the question, “Is it possible to make a full-time living teaching guitar?”

Notes from Chris

Episode 1181

Welcome to Throwback Thursday / “Where are they now?” where we take an in-depth look at someone who’s story has evolved considerably since we first featured them.

Last week we heard from a designer who grew her personalized wedding products business to seven figures in annual income.

Today, in our latest feature, we’ll hear from a university administrator who creates a sustainable full-time income from teaching guitar.

I remember when I first heard about Jake’s story, I was a little skeptical because so many people play guitar. In some ways, guitar lessons are a commodity. However, he approached it systematically by applying some basic marketing principles (including good copywriting) and ended up far surpassing the vast majority of other teachers.

Listen to today’s episode to hear Jake’s updates…

Q&A: Can I monetize my ideas without actually running the business?

What It’s About

Is it possible to get paid for your ideas?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1180

The two phases of starting any project are ideas and execution. They’re both important, and they’re both essential.

But what if you’re better at having ideas than executing? What if you really only like the first phase—can you focus entirely on idea generation and leave it to someone else to do all the work?

That’s what today’s listener is wondering about. I have some tough love in this answer … but also some advice if you relate to the question.

“I have a lot of ideas that I think are highly valuable … but I’ve learned that I’m not the best at making them happen. I want to sell the ideas themselves, along with my notes on what I think the person needs to do to make them successful. Is this crazy? How would I go about doing it?”
